Agobard of Lyon, Empire, and Adoptionism Reusing Heresy to Purify the Faith Rutger Kramer Institute for Medieval Research, Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna, Austria ABSTRACT — In the late eighth century, the heterodox movement Adoptionism emerged at the edge of the Carolingian realm. Initially, members of the Carolingian court considered it a threat to the ecclesiastical reforms they were spearheading, but they also used the debate against Adoptionism as an opportunity to extend their influence south of the Pyrenees. While they thought the movement had been eradicated around the turn of the ninth century, Archbishop Agobard of Lyon claimed to have found a remnant of this heresy in his diocese several decades later, and decided to alert the imperial court. This article explains some of his motives, and, in the process, reflects on how these early medieval rule-breakers (real or imagined) could be used in various ways by those making the rules: to maintain the purity of Christendom, to enhance the authority of the Empire, or simply to boost one’s career at the Carolingian court. 1 Alan H. Wielfaert A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto © Copyright by Jared Wielfaert 2015 Prudentius of Troyes (d. 861) and the Reception of the Patristic Tradition in the Carolingian Era Jared Gardner Wielfaert Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto 2015 ABSTRACT: This study concerns Prudentius, bishop of Troyes (861), a court scholar, historian, and pastor of the ninth century, whose extant corpus, though relatively extensive, remains unstudied. Born in Spain in the decades following the Frankish conquest of the Spanish march, Prudentius had been recruited to the Carolingian court under Louis the Pious, where he served as a palace chaplain for a twenty year period, before his eventual elevation to the see of Troyes in the 840s. With a career that moved from the frontier to the imperial court center, then back to the local world of the diocese and environment of cathedral libraries, sacred shrines, and local care of souls, the biography of Prudentius provides a frame for synthesis of several prevailing currents in the cultural history of the Carolingian era. His personal connections make him a rare link between the generation of the architects of the Carolingian reforms (Theodulf and Alcuin) and their students (Rabanus Maurus, Prudentius himself) and the great period of fruition of which the work of John Scottus Eriugena is the most widely recogized example. His involvement in the mid-century theological controversy over the doctrine of predestination illustrates the techniques and methods, as well as the concerns and preoccupations, of Carolingian era scholars engaged in the consolidation and interpretation of patristic opinion, particularly, that of Augustine. -

CH 310 (REL 399): READINGS IN LATIN ECCLESIASTICAL LITERATURE Topic for Spring, 2004: Four Carolingian Debates Time: Wednesdays, 1:30 - 3:50 Instructor: Keefe Office: 316 Old Divinity, 660-3469 or [email protected] Description The primary purpose of the course is to read medieval Latin in order to increase your skill at it, for whatever use this may have in your planned academic goals and research and thesis work. The secondary purpose of this course is to gain some knowledge of Carolingian theology by reading documents from four debates that arose in the late eighth and ninth century regarding 1) Spanish Adoptionism; 2) the adoration of images (icons); 3) the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist; and 4) predestination. Requirements 1. Weekly preparation of assigned amount of Latin, which we will then read together in translation in class. You may wish to write out your translation. If you run into areas of difficulty, you are expected to attempt to solve the difficulty by recourse to Latin grammar books and medieval Latin dictionaries. Raise any unsolved questions in class. 2. The option of a final 3-hour exam in which you will be asked to do your best to translate a previously unseen passage OR a translation project in which you present a polished translation of a hitherto untranslated Latin text, perhaps even working directly from microfilm of a medieval manuscript, or a medieval manuscript in our Rare Book Room. Your final grade will be determined by your weekly performance and effort, and by the degree of clarity with which you can translate the final exam or a Latin project. -

For Harnack, applying the methods of historical criticism to the Bible signified a return to true Christianity, which had become mired in unnecessary and even damaging creeds and dogmas. Seeking out what ªactually happened,º for him, was one way to strip away all but the foundations of the faith. With the History of Dogma series, Harnack sets out on this project, tracing the accumu- lation of Christianity's doctrinal systems and assumptions, particularly those inherited from Hellenistic thought. As Har- nack explains, only since the Protestant Reformation have Christians begun to cast off this corrupting inheritance, which must be entirely cast off if Christianity is to remain credible and relevant to people's lives. Rather controversially, the historian rejects the Gospel of John as authoritative on the basis of its Greek influences. Part Ii the Contents of the Carolingian Baptismal
PART II THE CONTENTS OF THE CAROLINGIAN BAPTISMAL LITERATURE Introduction to PART II In Part I the context of the baptismal literature in its earliest MSS. was examined. From the nature of the material repeatedly associated with baptismal tracts it was possible to establish the cause of our litera ture. The relation between context and cause has impor tant implications for other Carolingian literatures whose cause has not been shown. The cause of the baptismal literature is clerical reform legislation. This has been suggested as the reason for the multiplication of liturgical commentaries in the Carolingian period before this study. Here, however, the extraordinary extent of the association between Carolingian reform legislation and Carolingian literary productivity in the MSS. can be seen. In light of its cause, the baptismal literature is able to tell us something about the reform legislation that so famously characterizes the Carolingian era. First of all, it appears that baptismal tracts, among other literatures that multiplied as a result of legis lation to instruct the clergy and equip them with stan dardized texts, do not conform with the aims of the legislation. Baptismal instruction is not standardized and especially it is not Romanized. In Part II of this thesis a significant feature of the baptismal literature, its variety, is examined. 172 173 The reason for the seeming contradiction between the aims of the baptismal legislation and our literature is, at least in part, explained. By studying collectively the contents of the tracts themselves, just as with the MS~ contents, the nature and the cause of the variety in our literature can be shown. -

Our period is far behind the preceding patristic and the succeeding scholastic in doctrinal importance, but it mediates between them by carrying the ideas of the fathers over to the acute analysis of the schoolmen, and marks a progress in the development of the Catholic system. It was agitated by seven theological controversies of considerable interest. 1. The controversy about the single or double Procession of the Holy Spirit. This belongs to the doctrine of the Trinity and was not settled, but divides to this day the Greek and Latin churches. 2. The Monotheletic controversy is a continuation of the Eutychian and Monophysitic controversies of the preceding period. It ended with the condemnation of Monotheletism and an addition to the Chalcedonian Christology, namely, the doctrine that Christ has two wills as well as two natures. 3. The Adoptionist controversy is a continuation of the Nestorian. Adoptionism was condemned as inconsistent with the personal union of the two natures in Christ. 4 and 5. Two Eucharistic controversies resulted in the general prevalence of the doctrine of transubstantiation. 6. The Predestinarian controversy between Gottschalk and Hincmar tended to weaken the influence of the Augustinian system, and to promote semi-Pelagian views and practices. 7. The Image-controversy belongs to the history of worship rather than theology, and has been discussed in the preceding chapter. 569 The first, second, and seventh controversies affected the East and the West; the Adoptionist, the two Eucharistic, and the Predestinarian controversies were exclusively carried on in the West, and ignored in the East.
