Born in Spain in the decades following the Frankish conquest of the Spanish march, Prudentius had been recruited to the Carolingian court under Louis the Pious, where he served as a palace chaplain for a twenty year period, before his eventual elevation to the see of Troyes in the 840s. With a career that moved from the frontier to the imperial court center, then back to the local world of the diocese and environment of cathedral libraries, sacred shrines, and local care of souls, the biography of Prudentius provides a frame for synthesis of several prevailing currents in the cultural history of the Carolingian era. His personal connections make him a rare link between the generation of the architects of the Carolingian reforms (Theodulf and Alcuin) and their students (Rabanus Maurus, Prudentius himself) and the great period of fruition of which the work of John Scottus Eriugena is the most widely recogized example. His involvement in the mid-century theological controversy over the doctrine of predestination illustrates the techniques and methods, as well as the concerns and preoccupations, of Carolingian era scholars engaged in the consolidation and interpretation of patristic opinion, particularly, that of Augustine. ii Acknowledgments Over the many years this thesis has taken to research and write, I have had the support of a remarkable committee. The project was conceived under the supervision of Nick Everett, who first introduced me to the Carolingians in a seminar taught his first semester (and mine) in Toronto (Fall 2003). His enthusiasm for this project and constant encouragement, even during the lengthy intermission of 2008-10, convinced me that I had a unique angle on an interesting and much neglected topic. Nick’s generosity with his time and willingness to meet, often on very short notice, helped me to keep working amidst the pressures and demands of a new teaching position in Tennessee. And his willingness to push his own work in new directions has inspired me to keep an eye open to ideas from beyond the more familiar world of scholarship on the Carolingians. My debts to Joe Goering go well beyond this dissertation, though it could not have been written without him. Joe introduced me to the intellectual culture of the Middle Ages and trained me to hew closely to the evidence. He provided instant and incisive criticism of each of the several drafts of my chapters, saved me from many errors, and kept me from expending energy on fruitless lines of inquiry. Joe and Paula Goering also provided material support. They opened their home to me during lengthy research visits to Toronto in the summers of 2010-2013, offered warm conversation, and provided numerous meals. Joe’s deep erudition is surpassed only by his generosity. And my time in Toronto has been enriched deeply by his friendship and by his example. Isabelle Cochelin, Giulio Silano, and Ken Mills each provided valuable support during my early years in Toronto. Thus, it was particularly gratifying to have them join my committee for the dissertation defense. Isabelle encouraged me to humanize Prudentius, and Giulio urged me to see him as a lawyer. Their incisiveness in the defense will doubtless prove crucial to developing this project further. Ken Mills gave generously of his time and deep learning in the summer of 2006. Our reading on multiple Marys in sixteenth-century Spain proved crucial to my discovering multiple Augustines in ninth-century Francia. Tom Noble provided astute advice on a number of topics, and has helped me begin to think of my dissertation as a book. It was an honor to have him as an external examiner. The work for this dissertation has happened amidst an eventful domestic life shared in Toronto and in Tennessee with Stacey and the kids, whom I can never thank adequately. When we drove a rickety UHaul into Toronto in the summer of 2003, we were seeing the city for the first time. The friends we soon made eased the transition to urban life and helped make our time in that city into one of the most exciting and rewarding periods of our time together. Kris and Krystal Kobold, Steve and Jan Pede, and Lisa Chen helped us get through that first year. Kris, Steve, and Lisa shared with me the daily joys and hardships of learning Latin. Shawn and Myrna Keough, Dave and Heather Delaney, and Bronwyn and Andrew McDonald provided warm companionship and doted first on Hallie, then on Sadie, our little Canadian. Myrna, Heather, and Bronwyn became lively colleagues and friends to Stacey, while Shawn Keough taught me how to get work done amidst the many distractions of the city and helped me to surmount the barriers that blocked me from seeing myself as a scholar. I remember warmly and with gratitude our conversations about our research and especially our shared faith. In Cleveland, Tennessee, we have been fortunate to find a congenial community in which to live and work. But living so distant from the library and faculty resources of Toronto posed certain challenges to finishing the dissertation. His queries about medieval poetry quickly outgrew my expertise, but I am pleased that he will have more adequate resources now, as he completes his own PhD in the CMS, Toronto. I am fortunate to have had the support of generous parents, Doug and Marcy Wielfaert, without whom none of my academic pursuits would have been possible. Both parents worked tirelessly to provide the elementary and secondary education upon which all subsequent learning was based. They supported me financially throughout my undergraduate training and gave crucial material support during the years spent in Toronto. As one of a number of Restoration divines invested in exploring the lives and writings of the early Christians, Cave has nonetheless won only meagre interest from early- modernists in the past decade. Among his contemporaries and well into the nineteenth century Cave’s vernacular biographies of the Apostles and Church Fathers were widely read, but it was with the two volumes of his Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Historia Literaria (1688 and 1698), his life’s work, that he made his most important and lasting contribution to scholarship. The first aim of the thesis is therefore to build on a recent quickening of research into the innovative early-modern genre of historia literaria by exploring how, why, and with what help, in the context of late seventeenth-century European intellectual culture, Cave decided to write a work of literary history. To do so it makes extensive use of the handwritten drafts, annotations, notebooks, and letters that he left behind, giving a comprehensive account of his reading and scholarly practices from his student-days in 1650s Cambridge and then as a young clergyman in the 1660s to his final, unsuccessful attempts to publish a revised edition of his book at the end of his life.

    Agobard of Lyon, Empire, and Adoptionism Reusing Heresy to Purify the Faith Rutger Kramer Institute for Medieval Research, Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna, Austria ABSTRACT — In the late eighth century, the heterodox movement Adoptionism emerged at the edge of the Carolingian realm. Initially, members of the Carolingian court considered it a threat to the ecclesiastical reforms they were spearheading, but they also used the debate against Adoptionism as an opportunity to extend their influence south of the Pyrenees. While they thought the movement had been eradicated around the turn of the ninth century, Archbishop Agobard of Lyon claimed to have found a remnant of this heresy in his diocese several decades later, and decided to alert the imperial court. Although little known outside the world of modern Carolingian scholarship, he was the ninth century’s Cardinal Richelieu, albeit a much more prolific author and, one suspects, a more committed churchman. He cut a giant swath through ninth-century ecclesiastical and political history, serving with (never under) four successive West Frankish monarchs. Born sometime during the first decade of the century during the reign of Emperor Charlemagne (768-814), he died fleeing Viking marauders with his church’s treasures in a changed world ruled by a congeries of small kings and fractious warlords. As Rachel Stone states in her meaty introduction to this collection, Hincmar’s impact was “surprisingly slight” (p. 27). We study his voluminous and varied written legacy (history, law, hagiography, poetry, correspondence, prescriptive documents of all sorts, opinions on all that mattered) primarily to gain insight into his vision of Carolingian society and to the changing world around him. If this man, close advisor of the ruler of the land, had but one vice, it was his dependence on the lazy and luxurious lifestyle he had grown accustomed to. Haelwocon was a slave to his belly. He also was a drinker of wine beyond measure, and to make matters even worse, he refused to take advice from anybody when he was reproached, and he just laughed when called upon to mend his erroneous ways. In doing this, he opened himself up to attacks by demons, and only after such an attack had finally happened did he repent. Tormented by convulsions, he ordered his servants to tie him up and bring him to the nearest monastery, where he hoped he might find solace. Indeed, he did. Through the prayers of the monks, the demons were expelled from his body, “and from that day he took care to mend his ways and lead a sober life, and revere the holy place”. The story of Haelwocon is a story of redemption that has been written down in the Gesta Sanctorum Rotonensium ( GSR ), a ninth-century work that tells about origins and rise to prominence of the monastery of Redon, its first abbot, and the first generation of monks. 1 As such, it is no surprise that, in this anecdote, the monastery the hapless aristocrat asks to be brought to, is indeed Redon.

  • The Hostages of the Northmen: from the Viking Age to the Middle Ages
    Part IV: Legal Rights It has previously been mentioned how hostages as rituals during peace processes – which in the sources may be described with an ambivalence, or ambiguity – and how people could be used as social capital in different conflicts. It is therefore important to understand how the persons who became hostages were vauled and how their new collective – the new household – responded to its new members and what was crucial for his or her status and participation in the new setting. All this may be related to the legal rights and special privileges, such as the right to wear coat of arms, weapons, or other status symbols. Personal rights could be regu- lated by agreements: oral, written, or even implied. Rights could also be related to the nature of the agreement itself, what kind of peace process the hostage occurred in and the type of hostage. But being a hostage also meant that a person was subjected to restric- tions on freedom and mobility. What did such situations meant for the hostage-taking party? What were their privileges and obli- gations? To answer these questions, a point of departure will be Kosto’s definition of hostages in continental and Mediterranean cultures around during the period 400–1400, when hostages were a form of security for the behaviour of other people.
