The Goddard Arms,

Dear Neighbour, You may already know that The Goddard Arms Pub in Clyffe Pypard is again to be disposed of by the current owners.

Before June 24th 2019, offers to the vendor can be made in respect of retaining the pub as a community asset. After that date, if the local community has no appetite for retaining the asset, it will be sold on the open market. We could all own a share of a great local pub. We could all be part of a democratic body of pub-lovers with an equal financial share and interest in resurrecting and running a community asset like The Goddard Arms. The cost to, say, 100 investors of buying and refurbishing The Goddard Arms could be as little as £4,000 each. The advantage of having a larger number of investors is that if an individual wanted at any point to withdraw their share, it is more easily purchased by the remaining 99 investors or offered to another investor. That's 100 pub-lovers that could bring at least 1 guest to our new community asset. You get the idea... If you think it's a good one, please register your interest by emailing [email protected] and you will be invited to an initial meeting planned to take place within 10 days, given the short time frame. We look forward to hearing from you. Andrew, Bushton & Andrew, Clyffe Pypard.

BUSHTON and CLYFFE PYPARD WOMEN'S INSTITUTE In May, members enjoyed the visit of an auctioneer, Gordon Brockman, who entertained and informed on silverware, also giving cleaning advice. Soap and water and a silver cloth are all we need.

Earlier in the evening a vote was taken on resolutions to be brought to the WI National AGM in June: the need for improved local transport and greater encouragement for women to participate in cervical screening. Both were supported and the AGM will decide on which to take to government level.

In June, we look forward to our meeting on 20th June (as usual, the third Thursday starting at 7.15pm) when popular speaker Matthew Sproston will tell us the history of the Pelham Puppets. You are welcome to try us out (more details from Sally Fox 01249 891442 [email protected]).

Four of us will be spending a weekend at Denman College, the WI's own residential college in Oxfordshire, our book club meets to talk about Cider with Rosie, and some will walk in a local wild flower meadow, then share supper, organised by the Hall Committee. As ever, a variety of activities to enjoy!

PLANT FAIR - BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY 6th May 2019 A massive thank you to all those who helped in any way to make the event so successful – once again there were over 1000 visitors and the money raised for St Peter’s Church will be around £6,000. Over 50 volunteers helped in some way which is so heartening when you consider that the population of Clyffe Pypard and Bushton combined totals around 300. By 5pm on the afternoon of 6th May, apart from the marquees still being up and a few wisps of straw on the lawn, the Manor House Gardens were almost back to how they looked before the event started – thank you to everyone who helped with the clearing up! And finally, an enormous thanks to Jane and Sandy Angus who allow their home to be taken over for this Plant Fair which certainly puts Bushton on the map!

Produce Show – Saturday 7th September

What wonderful weather we have been having. Just right for spending more time in the garden. Do hope that you are keeping the Show in mind as you look around at what is growing. We have classes for all the usual vegetables, and if you can, do make a note of the variety that you have grown. It is helpful to the judge and may help our visitors to decide on what they want to grow next year. How competitive are you? One of the most popular classes each year is always that for the longest runner bean and we also have competitions for the heaviest onion and apple. The garden flowers always look wonderful in the hall. You can bring 5 stems of one variety of flower or 6 of different ones, and there are always classes for roses and dahlias. And, as well as for the cut flowers, we have 2 classes for pot grown exhibits, for a fuchsia and for any other flowering pot plant. All vegetable, flower and plant entries need to have been in your care for at least the 2 months before the Show, so there is still time to get started. If you haven’t received your schedule yet or would like one please get in touch with Jan ([email protected] /01249 890726). VILLAGE HALL NEWSs

Progress is a little slow on the redecoration of the Committee Room but it is hoped to be completed by the time of the Mid-Summer evening walk and social get – together. If anyone feels like helping with the painting then do let me know!

Mid-Summer Walk in local Wild Flower Meadows and Social evening – FRIDAY 21st JUNE

The walk will start from the Village Hall car park at 6:30pm - well behaved dogs will be welcome. If you do not wish to walk and would like to join the walkers (and others) at 8pm then please do so – walking is not compulsory!!

We hope that all of you will join in the pot-luck supper – how does this work? You bring enough food for yourselves plus a bit more – it can be anything you wish - sweet or savoury and it all goes on to one big table and we share!! If you are on a special diet then please make sure you get your specially prepared food!!

Please bring your own drinks and glasses - plates and cutlery are provided as well as tea and coffee. Walkers can leave food in the kitchen where there is plenty of fridge space.

The evening is free of charge but there will be a donation pot for Wildlife.

It would be helpful (but not essential) to know whether you might be coming so please leave me a message on 01793 739017 or [email protected]. Thank you. Barbara Davis

COMMUNITY NEWS

Motorbikes Meeting on 16th June, spectators are always welcome.

On Volunteers Everyone is always looking for volunteers – most weeks I receive several requests from charities and these often include a request that I will advertise opportunities for people to volunteer and encourage them to do so. Some of this will be because statistically both older people and church goers, and regionally the South West have a higher rate of volunteering (figures from 2014 give the highest rate of volunteers as those between 65 and 74*), although I know many young people and atheists who volunteer so statistics won’t tell the whole story!

When the numbers of people volunteering in Clyffe Pypard are set against the number in the population there is an amazing amount of time and labour given within this community – over 60 people volunteered at the Bushton plant fair for example.

And within the local schools and charities such as Prospect Hospice of Link 6 or by serving on trusts and parish councils, or putting together village newsletters an enormous amount is achieved by people who give their time without monetary reward.

Sometimes in our local communities it can seem as if we are always asking for more or worrying about what might not happen, without the gifts and talents of our volunteers, so this seems a good time to celebrate the gifting of human energy in time, labour and many other ways.
