Cold Living

Living in a cold home can be bad for your health. Consistently low temperatures in your home may exacerbate existing health issues (particularly respiratory and cardiovascular conditions) and make it harder for you to recover from illnesses. It can cause you and your family to feel miserable at home, effecting concentration, dexterity and mental health. Residents can now contact Warm & Safe Wiltshire - the commitment from Wiltshire Council and Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service and their partners to help residents live in safer and healthier homes - and a one stop shop for all cold home and energy queries. The service provides free, impartial advice about keeping your home warm, understanding your heating system and energy bills, switching energy supplier, making energy saving improvements and a comprehensive home fire safety check where eligible. Energy advice can be given through home visits as well as over the phone. Warm & Safe Wiltshire can help to improve energy efficiency in the home which can reduce fuel bills. The service can also advise on possible benefit entitlement and available grants such as the Warm Home Discount. Insulation is one of the best ways of lowering your energy bills and a new grant offer means that if you are a homeowner or privately-renting tenant in Wiltshire with a suitable property you can have cavity wall insulation installed in your home, free of charge – helping to make your home warmer and cheaper to heat. In some circumstances you may also be able to access grant funding to help with the cost of insulating your loft. All offers are subject to survey, funding availability and property suitability. Donate Unwanted Christmas Gifts to Wiltshire Sight Rather than putting your unwanted Christmas gifts away and forgetting about them, consider donating them to Wiltshire Sight. They can sell your wrong sized clothing or the CD you don’t like via their Ebay shop to raise money to fund their services supporting those living with sight loss in Wiltshire and . There are 3,750 people registered as blind or partially sighted in Wiltshire, however it is estimated that there are 15,350 people living with sight loss in the area. There are also 620 people in Swindon who are registered as blind or partially sighted and there are an estimated 5,300 living with sight loss. Wiltshire Sight provides practical support, delivered directly into the community to help people with sight loss lead full, independent, healthy and socially active lives. They work hard to fill the increasingly large gap left by the reduction in local health and social care services and for many people, are a valuable lifeline as they struggle to come to terms with their sight loss and learn how to remain independent. It costs about £250,000 each year to run Wiltshire Sight and make everything they do possible, so any amount you are able to donate will help to maintain all of their services. Here are just a few examples of what a donation could fund;  £10 would pay for an individual to receive emotional support via the telephone.  £50 would pay for one of their community drop in’s for up to 20 individuals to receive information advice and access to resources.  £100 would pay for an assistive technology workshop.  £500 would cover the costs of their home visiting service for two weeks. Maggie Hemmings – Direct Services Manager at Wiltshire Sight – had this to say: “Donating unwanted presents is an amazing way to be selfless and give something back at this time of year. Consider the fact that we may support your friend/family currently or in the future with sight loss and their independence.” She continued: “We greatly appreciate any donation, it all enables us to continue the amazing services we provide every day for those living with an eye condition. Thank you for your support in 2015, we hope in continues into 2016 and beyond.” As an independent charity Wiltshire Sight receives no core funding from statutory sources and we rely on the generosity of local people and businesses. For more information, please telephone the Wiltshire Sight team on 01380 739113 or email [email protected] Is your new years resolution to do something you’ve never done before or maybe to give something back to your local community? Then volunteering may be what you are looking for. Wiltshire Sight’s volunteers help keep the organisation running, everything from website maintenance to assisting the fundraising team to helping on our Christmas market stalls. There is an oppurutnity for everyone in volunteering, any skill you have can be put to good use at Wiltshire Sight.

RIDGEWAY LADIES

For all new ladies to our Parish I thought you might like to know we have a ladies group, called Ridgeway Ladies, who meet on the first Wednesday of the month (except August) at 7.45 pm in Broad Hinton Village Hall.

We invite six speakers to talk to us on various subjects and this year they include a handwriting analyst, dietician and textile artist. In June we have a visit to a local place of interest followed by a meal in a nearby pub or restaurant; in July our Summer Party in the village hall; Skittles in October and a Christmas party in December. One of our talks this year was about the work of the Wiltshire Air Ambulance given by a lady in the village who works as a volunteer. We gave a donation of £100 to this very worthy service. We also gave a £150 donation to Swindon Women’s Aid (formerly Swindon Refuge).

Our Annual General Meeting in 2016 is on Wednesday 6th January and our first speaker will be with us on the 3rd February. The annual subscription is £20 but if you would like to try us out first you can pay £3 as a guest for the evening.

Our members come from all walks of life with varying interests, so you might say a fairly “mixed bunch”. However, one thing you can be sure of is a warm welcome so we look forward to seeing you.

For any questions please contact one of our Committee Members:-

The Ridgeway Ladies are going to see the Carole King musical "Beautiful" on Thursday 4th February 2016 at the Aldwych Theatre. We have hired a 37 seater Barnes coach which will leave the Village Hall at 10.00 am. At approximately 5pm the coach will set off from London and depending on traffic arrive back in the village around 8pm. There are 24 people going but we could only get a 37 seater coach. Therefore 13 seats are available at around £20 per seat. If you fancy an afternoon in London without having to drive or negotiate the underground, please contact me.

The View from the Rectory

Now that Christmas is over I suppose many people will turn their attention to that well known once a year phenomenon – the January sales. Not of course that we don’t have sales at any other time of the year! There are pre-Christmas sales, 48 hour shopping ‘events’, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, 30%, 40% and 50% off ‘spectaculars - so many I wonder they bother any more with the January sales. What is it about the thought of bagging a bargain that brings out the absolute worst in people?

I had supper with some friends recently, one of whom works in the retail industry for a High Street emporium that shall remain nameless. While some customers are lovely, others resemble a cross between Attila the Hun and Mrs Forbes - Hamilton from To the Manor Born. Can you imagine someone waltzing into your place of work, partner in tow, and pushing past you as you stand with the key in the lock at just gone closing time? Can you imagine this person, not in a tizz because of an emergency, but needing to kill time between end of work and the drinks party at the local hostelry? Now, further stretch your imagination and see this same person try on item after item, (which will all need to be refolded and restacked), ignoring the occasional plea from the staff member that the shop has actually closed, and finally saying in a patronising manner ‘you really don’t have anything worth spending money on’. Smoke coming out of your ears yet?? Thought so.

Retail staff cope with rudeness, aggression, and downright bad manners every day of the week, but during sales and at busy times of the year it is even worse. Many of our retail assistants are conscientious, hardworking and diligent and are often ignored, dismissed, patronised or treated like skivvies. They put in 12-14 hour days, on their feet for most of it with little time off for breaks. Some of them are expected to adopt hard-sell techniques and to meet quotas imposed by companies who care more about profits than the well-being of their staff. There are duties to complete before they go home, and every customer that overstays adds to that work load and impacts on their time with families and commutes home. Then there are 6 day and 10 day working weeks, split shifts and managers who are demanding and demeaning.

I wonder if one of our New Year’s resolutions might be to actually look at, and speak kindly to the person serving us when we are engaged in a bit of retail therapy – whether it is buying a pint of milk or an outfit for a wedding. Have a little listen the next time you go shopping - it might well be a real eye-opener. A simple ‘thank you’ sincerely meant could be the best New Year’s gift to a sales assistant. Few are the stereotypical behind the counter gossipers of Sit-Com Land; all are human beings. What if one of them was your daughter or son?

Elbows sharpened, hit the sales if you must, but NOT the sales assistant!

One of the attractions of the annual Christmas Festival in Padstow is the display of Christmas cribs in St Petroc’s church. John and Jane O’Neill and Jenni Moseling brought this idea to our church over the weekend of 12-13 December, gathering together 73 much-loved cribs, all lent on the promise of tight security! There were cribs from many parts of the world, including Russia, Poland, Kenya, Mexico, Peru, the United States and Portugal. Particularly poignant were two from Bethlehem which featured the wall which now divides the Holy Land. The most common reaction of visitors was simply “Wow!”. Many went home for their cameras. There were refreshments and music, live (Phil practising on the organ) and recorded, to enjoy and over £500 was donated to church funds. A group of parishioner potters have made a new crib set for our church and their figures, save of course for the baby Jesus, were on show for the first time – the work of Liz Moakes, Dave Wong, Jenni Moseling, Sally Cartwright, Jo McCombe, Jane O’Neill and Jenny Clarke. Martin Moseling made the new stable. UPPER KENNET CHURCHES – SERVICES IN JANUARY 2016
