Cruising The
Cruising the ADRIATICBest of Slovenia and Croatia aboard Queen Eleganza • September 10–21, 2021 Dear National Trust Traveler, Over the course of many millennia, a succession of civilizations—from the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires to the Crusades and the Renaissance— swept across the Eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea, leaving behind a wealth of architectural and cultural treasures. In a region well worth exploring for its natural beauty alone, you will visit spellbinding archaeological sites, impressive cathedrals, dramatic palaces, and ancient city centers that illuminate the layered history of the Dalmatian Coast. Begin in Slovenia’s capital city, Ljubljana, a city with roots dating back to Roman times. Discover magical Lake Bled, monumental karst caves, and mountain aeries before continuing to Rovinj, Croatia to begin your 7-night Adriatic cruise. Sail along the Croatian coast from the Istrian Peninsula to Dubrovnik, calling at Veliki Brijun Island, Pula, Zadar, Split, Hvar, and Korčula along the way. A leisurely pace allows for free time in town to sample local cuisine and mingle with locals. Launched in 2018, the intimate Queen Eleganza yacht features a casual ambiance and the ability to call at small, inviting islands and ports not accessible to large cruise ships. With space for only 28 travelers, this program will likely fill quickly and I encourage you to reserve your place today! Sincerely, Meg Annacone-Poretz Director, National Trust Tours For information on this or other National Trust Tours, call (888) 484-8785. The Marina has all the amenities and a large pool that shortens the time to check-in. If you start your holiday from our base Veruda, you should definitely make a short detour to Pula at the beginning or end of your journey. UNJE The small island of Unje is strikingly green and wildly overgrown with sage, rockro- se, laurel, lavender, rosemary and thyme. Especially in spring it smells wonderful. The few inhabitants live in the only town, their houses are aligned circularly towards the sea. Trails lead across the entire island and to the two lighthouses. Susak Susak is a small, gently rolling island with only 3.7 km². In Susak time seems to have stood still. The streets are lined with flowering shrubs and well maintained. The island has great sandy coves. It is best to anchor in Porat or to moor in the harbor of Susak. -
Pomorske Veze I Turistička Valorizacija Malinske
ISSN 0554-6397 UDK 338.48(497.52 Malinska) IZVORNI ZNANSTVENI RAD (Original scientific paper) Primljeno (Received): 12/2002 Dr. sc. Hrvoje Turk, izv. profesor Medoviæeva 8, 51000 Rijeka Helena Turk-ariæ, profesor geografije Medoviæeva 8, 51000 Rijeka POMORSKE VEZE I TURISTIÈKA VALORIZACIJA MALINSKE Saetak U èlanku se raspravlja o meðusobnoj uvjetovanosti pomorskih veza Malinske s kopnom i njenog turistièkog razvoja. Izdvojene su dvije etape u pomorskom povezivanju otoka Krka i Malinske (parobrodarska i trajektna) i tri razdoblja u turistièkoj valorizaciji. HOTEL REMISENS PALACE 4*, Opatija The hotel is located only 1 minute on foot from the seafront. One of the most renowned hotels in Opatija, the Remisens Premium Grand Hotel Palace is set in a recently renovated Secession building, beautifully located along the main street facing the sea. In summer evenings you can enjoy themed dinners and musical events on the large hotel’s terrace. The rooms are decorated in pastel colours and are equipped with a flat-screen cable TV, AC, Wi-Fi… The hotel features a spa, wellness centre, indoor pool with heated seawater, a peaceful relaxation area, Finnish and Turkish saunas… A variety of massages and beauty treatments are available. The elegant, air- conditioned restaurant serves a buffet breakfast. The nearest pebble beach is only a 10-minute walk from the hotel. OPATIJA Opatija was the one of the first towns to develop tourism in Croatia and on the Adriatic Sea. Austrian secession architecture is the predominant building style, a reminder of the mid-19th century when the main visitors were the Central European upper class and political elite. Opatija still today remains a synonym for a stylish travel destination. We suggest a stroll on the Lungomare, a seaside promenade (the longest in Croatia with 12 km) connecting the fishing towns of Volosko and Lovran. -

The Krk Diocese
THE KRK DIOCESE THE ISLES SHALL WAIT FOR HIS TEACHINGS O I R E T S I IN M T I E N IO ORAT FOREWORD The centuries-long presence of Christianity on the islands of the Krk Diocese is deeply rooted in the life and culture of its population, which has been subject to a succession of various social orders during the course of history. Until the year 1828, there were three dioceses within this territory: Krk, Osor and Rab. The presence of a bishop and his relationship with the people had a strong impact upon spiritual formation and identity. The pas- tors of the small dioceses of the Kvarner Islands demonstrated magna- nimity and openness of spirit toward the beautiful and modern, while at the same time listening to the “pulse” of the people, incorporating their language in worship. The beauty of handwritten and illuminated Glagolitic missals, psalters and antiphonals greatly enriched the corpus of liturgical literature traditionally written in Latin. Christian culture, both spiritual and material, is reflected here in the arts of painting, architecture, literature, poetry and music. This is a Church distinguished by its priests and religious, especially the Benedictines and Franciscans, including those with the reputation of saintliness, who have played exceptional historical roles in the raising and fostering of national consciousness, enhancement of the quality of life, education in moral principles, and the creation and safeguarding of the cultural heritage. These values provided a firm foundation for assuring the survival of this nation under changing conditions, not infrequently im- posed by fire and sword. -
A Molecular Phylogenetic Study of Deschampsia (Poaceae: Aveneae
TAXON 56 (1) • February 2007: 55–64 Chiapella • Circumscription and phylogeny of Deschampsia A molecular phylogenetic study of Deschampsia (Poaceae: Aveneae) inferred from nuclear ITS and plastid trnL sequence data: support for the recognition of Avenella and Vahlodea Jorge Chiapella Department of Systematic and Evolutionary Botany, Institute of Botany, University of Vienna, Rennweg 14, 1020 Vienna, Austria (present address: Laboratorio Molecular, IMBIV, Universidad de Córdoba, Campus Ciudad Universitaria, casilla de correo 495 X5000JJC Córdoba, Argentina). [email protected] The circumscription and phylogeny of Deschampsia were studied for the first time by parsimony analysis of nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and plastid trnL intron sequences. The traditional sectional division based on morphology was not supported by sequence data, which showed differences between core Deschampsia s.str. (mainly represented by D. cespitosa), D. atropurpurea and D. flexuosa. Differences in the ITS marker included insertions in the sequence of D. atropurpurea; the trnL marker contained a deletion shared by all Deschampsia sequences, excluding D. atropurpurea and D. flexuosa, and an insertion in D. flexuosa. ITS sequences also differed in an insertion shared by Northern Hemisphere accessions. Both markers produced similar tree topologies but D. klossi, in spite of being morphologically close to Deschampsia s.str., fell with D. flexuosa outside the core of the genus in the trnL tree. Molecular evidence corroborates morphological and cytological data supporting exclusion of D. atropurpurea and D. flexuosa from Deschampsia and their treatment as separate genera. The position of D. klossi needs further investigation. KEYWORDS: circumscription, Deschampsia, Deschampsia atropurpurea, Deschampsia cespitosa, Deschampsia flexuosa, ITS, phylogeny, trnL 1978, 1980a, 1980b, 1980c) published several studies on INTRODUCTION their cytology (but also morphology), showing different Deschampsia P.
