30 PART 1.: AN OVERVIEW OF THE STATE OF BIOLOGICAL AND LANDSCAPE DIVERSITY IN CROATIA Threats to biological communities in the Adriatic Anthropogenic impacts pose a constant threat to living communities in shallow coastline areas. This primarily refers to building works carried out on the coast, to backfilling and consequential mudding of some parts of the sea, to solid waste disposal and particularly to pollution by unpurified waste waters of municipal and industrial origin. These factors pose threat to living communities of supralittoral and mediolittoral zones, and especially meadows of sea flowers Posidonia oceanica and Zostera marina (Box 27) belonging to communities of the infralittoral zone. A highly intensive process of filling up the coastal sea with diverse building and earthworks wastes is adversely affecting the settlements of various algae of genus Cystoseria, including the settlements of the endemic brown alga Adriatic wrack (Fig. 46) that has almost completely disappeared from some polluted parts of the Adriatic (western coast of Istria, Split, etc.). The degradation of ecological balance of benthonic ecosystems is also a result of excessive fishing for economic and sport reasons, including the ravaging of individual divers. In the shallow sea man particularly threatens the complex communities of photophilous algae and meadows of Posidonia oceanica, while in the depths of the sea the communities of the detrital bottom are most threatened due to consequences of natural stress conditions, and the communities of the muddy bottom due to excessive trawling. The immigration (or introduction) of the tropical green algae Caulerpa in the northern Mediterranean in 1984 represents another threat to biological diversity of the Figure 48. -

Study on identifying the driver s of successful implementation of the Birds and Habitats Directives under contract ENV.F.1/FRA/2014/0063 Final Report 1 March 2019 2 Authors This main report was primarily written and prepared by Graham Tucker and Tom Stuart (IEEP), Sandra Naumann, Ulf Stein and Ruta Landgrebe-Trinkunaite (Ecologic), and Onno Knol (PBL). It draws on information gathered during the study that was compiled as a Genuine Improvements Database and analysed by Ulf Stein and Ruta Landgrebe-Trinkunaite of Ecologic. Succession Model with Corynephorus Canescens in Abandoned Sandy Fields (W Slovakia)
HACQUETIA 11/1 • 2012, 5–15 DOI: 10.2478/v10028-012-0001-6 Succession model wIth Corynephorus CanesCens In AbAndoned sandy fIeldS (w Slovakia) Milan VALACHOVIČ1 Abstract The succession of vegetation on acidic sandy fields after abandonment was studied and obtained results were compared with similar data from eastern part of Europe. The vegetation changes head towards oligotrophic Corynephorus-grasslands, because nutrients from the upper layer of soils are gradually washed out. Dry, oc- casionally blowing sand enables the growth of psammophytes very well. The paper compares the succession models on abandoned sandy fields, and semi-natural acidic sandy dunes in western part of Slovakia, southern Moravia, Hungary and Croatia. In spite of amazing similarities, some differences are displayed using spectra of life forms and presentation of weeds. Izvleček: Proučevali smo sukcesijo vegetacije na opuščenih kislih peščenih poljih in primerjali rezultate s podobni- mi podatki iz vzhodne Evrope. Spremembe vegetacije so usmerjene proti oligotrofnim traviščem z vrsto Co- rynephorus, saj se hranila postopomo izperejo iz zgornjih talnih plasti. Suh pesek, ki ga občasno prinese veter omogoča uspevanje psamofitom. V članku smo primerjali sukcesijske modele na opuščenih peščenih poljih in polnaravnih kislih peščenih Dinah v zahodnem delu Slovaške, južne Moravske, Madžarske in Hrvaške. Kljub veliki podobnosti smo izpostavili določene razlike s spektrom življenskih oblik in prisotnostjo plevelnih vrst. Epifanio 14, 27100 Pavia, Italy, [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] *Corresponding author Abstract In Italy most of the habitats hosting terricolous lichens are found in the Alps and along the coasts, but some lichen-rich plant communities are also present in the Po Plain. We report a study of terrico- lous lichen communities found in dry grasslands attributed to Spergulo vernalis-Corynephoretum canescentis in the western Po Plain (Northern Italy), in accordance with the Braun-Blanquet approach. Relevés (138) were carried out in several developmental stages of the Corynephorus grassland. They were sorted manually and analyzed using ANOSIM, non-parametric MANOVA and PCA. Indicator species of the groups were found by means of INDVAL and SIMPER analyses and literature. Seven lichen vegetation types were distinguished. These were attributable to 4 described associations: Stere- ocauletum condensati, Cladonietum foliaceae (in which we found 3 subassociations: typicum, cladonietosum furcatae and cladonietosum subrangiformis), Cladonietum mitis and Cladonietum rei, and to one impoverished community (Cetraria aculeata community). Ordination of floristic variables showed several overlaps between communities, underlining the depleted floristic conditions found in the study area, where several species occur in many communities and other species are very rare, and thus play a minor role in the differentiation of the lichen vegetation types. -

We analysed a large data set of phytosociological relevés of dry grasslands (Festu- co-Brometea and Festucetea vaginatae classes) in Serbia to produce the first overview of its classifica- tion, distribution, environmental conditions and biodiversity patterns. Phytocoenological relevés from relevant literature sources and our own investigations were stored in the Vegetation Database of Serbia (EU-RS-002) and the Balkan Dry Grassland Database (EU-00-013). After heterogeneity-constrained random resampling, the final dataset contained 1,897 relevés and 1,323 species. Species composition was classified hierarchically by the beta flexible method. We used species ecological indicator values for the estimation of the ecological conditions. Floristic and vegetation diversity and the conservation relevance of various dry grassland types, based on an assessment of endemic and protected species, were analysed. -
