D4.2: Regional fact sheets – Kreis Euskirchen 3 1.2 The area geography and constraints Following local geography constraints that comprise physical restrictions to the movement of people and vehicles can be found at Kreis Euskirchen: Forests and forestall areas are located in the south and south-west of the Kreis Euskirchen called the Eifel. Named e.g. Zitterwald and Münstereifeler Wald the Eifel is a volcanic- based mountain chain with the highest point Weißer Stein (693 m). Around 36% of the area of Kreis Euskirchen are shrouded by forests. The northly part of the Kreis Euskirchen is predominantly in agricultural use. The Eifel is part of the Rhenish Slatemountains. Constraints to the movement of people are on the one hand the numerous hills with heights around 500 to 600 metres and on the other hand a lot of rivers and smaller streams flowing through them. Since the 1970s there are some human-made water-reservoirs (e.g. Rursee, Urftsee, Oleftalsperre) in the Eifel, too. The barrier lakes are during the summer also visited by a lot of tourists from the region for bathing and water-sports. The region Eifel is populated since centuries, thus the transportation routes are well-fitted to the landscape. 1.3 Transport and mobility infrastructure offered The Kreis Euskirchen is via the autobahn A1 well-connected with the area of Cologne and the Ruhrgebiet. In the northeast of Kreis Euskirchen crosses the A 61 and the A 553, connecting the area with Bonn, Koblenz and the Rhine-Main-Area (Frankfurt, Offenbach, Darmstadt). In the Kreis Euskirchen the main communities are connected through the federal highways (Bundesstraßen) B 51, B 56, B 266, and B 265. Additionally, there is a dense network of district roads and municipal roads, which connect every village each to each and to the roads of higher importance (see picture 2). The following age pyramids show at the two examples Bad Münstereifel and Schleiden how the age structure will change (the development in Kall, Hellenthal, and the other communities runs more or less similar). The pyramid shows the prognosis of the proportions of women (red side) and men (green side) at Bad Münstereifel in the year 2030. For comparing the grey line show the proportions in the year 2009. The shift is obvious – the people aged 60+ will growing while the younger ones will become less. And the older people of every age between 60 and 100 years will be significant more than in 2009. The baby-boomer year in Germany is 1964 – never before and never after as much babies were born. In 2030 this age group will be completely in retirement. Table 3 shows the development in absolute numbers for five age groups in addition to figure 2. The age pyramid of Schleiden (figure 3) and table 4 shows similar effects.
