Biography

Ernest Samuels was born on the south side of on May 19, 1903. His parents were Albert (also known as Alexander) and Mary (Kaplan) Samuels. He attended Chicago Public Schools, including Tilden Technical High School, after which he entered the as a pre-law student in 1919. He received a Bachelor of Philosophy in Law and French in 1923 and immediately entered the University of Chicago Law School. Although ill with tuberculosis for one year during this time, he received his J.D. in 1926. After graduation a recurrence of the disease forced him-to go to New Mexico in order to recuperate. After recovering he established a law practice in El Paso, Texas, in partnership with Harold Potash, remaining there from 1928-1930. In 1930 he then returned to Chicago to pursue a long standing interest in literature. While a student he had edited and written articles for The Pyramid, his fraternity literary magazine. From January to August 1931 he resumed his studies at the University of Chicago, this time in the English Department. He passed a proficiency examination to attain the equivalent credits of an undergraduate literature major and after three quarters of study, during which he wrote a on Henry David Thoreau’s literary reputation, he received a Master of Arts in English. The prevailing economic situation led Samuels to take the first available position, teaching English and Law at Bryant Stratton , a in Chicago. During his tenure there, 1931-1936, he was chairman of the English Department. He also developed a business English textbook-workbook, Business English Projects (1936 and later editions). The book was originally designed to supplement his own class work, but it was eventually adopted by 600 schools. He also resumed the practice of law, becoming licensed in Illinois in 1933. He pursued the law exclusively in 1936-1937, working for his brother Leo Samuels’ firm. He then received an offer to teach at the State College of Washington (later Washington State University) at Pullman. He taught his first upperclass literature classes at Washington State and this experience convinced him of the need to strengthen his background in literature; hence, in 1939 he again entered the University of Chicago to pursue a PhD in American and English literature. While at Pullman, he met and married Jayne Porter Newcomer on August 24, 1938. She held a Bachelor’s degree in education from and was a teaching fellow while pursuing her Master’s degree at Pullman. She later served as Samuels’ research associate and pursued her own career as a teacher and administrator at in Evanston. The Samuels have three children: Susanna (1943), Jonathan (1944) and Elizabeth (1952). Returning to his studies at the University of Chicago full time in 1939, Samuels began the research project that would last for more than twenty years. His chief interest was post-Civil War American literature, and accordingly, his dissertation topic was, "The Early Career of .” Samuels received his PhD from Chicago in September 1942. Samuels was appointed Instructor of English in the fall of 1942 at , where he remained until his retirement in 1971. He became an Assistant Professor in 1946, Associate Professor in 1949, and full Professor in 1954. He also served as department chairman from 1964-1966 and held the Franklyn Bliss Snyder Professorship from 1970-1971. While at Northwestern Samuels continued his research on the career of Henry

Adams and in 1948 The Young Henry Adams was published by Press. The first of what would become a three-volume biography was based upon his dissertation. He later wrote Henry Adams: The Middle Years (1958) and Henry Adams: The Major Phase (1964), after receiving permission to use the Adams papers, which had previously been closed. During the 1955-1956 academic year after receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship, he took a leave of absence to work on the second volume. With its publication in 1958 Samuels was awarded the Parkman Prize by the Society of American Historians, and in early 1959, awarded him the Bancroft Prize, as well. During the year 1958-1959 he served as Fulbright lecturer in American literature and civilization in Belgium. The zenith of his career came with the publication of Henry Adams: The Major Phase in the fall of 1964. The following May he was awarded the in Biography for 1965. Samuels himself later served on the Pulitzer Prize Jury in Biography and History. In 1966-1967 Samuels held the Leo S. Bing Visiting Professorship at the University of Southern California. He had already begun his next project, a biography of the art historian and critic Bernard Berenson. In 1971-1972 he was awarded a second Guggenheim Fellowship to research and write the Berenson biography, a project he worked on full-time after retiring from Northwestern in August 1971. The work was published in 1979. In addition, after having served on the editorial advisory committee for the Adams (family) Papers, Samuels became senior editor of the Henry Adams letters, a projected six-volume series. Samuels was an active member of several professional organizations including the Modern Language Association, National Council of Teachers of English, American Studies Association, American Association of University Professors, College English Association and the Massachusetts Historical Society. He also edited and wrote introductions to several new editions of Henry Adams’ major works.

Description of the Series, Boxes 1-16 (1918-1977)

The Ernest Samuels Papers comprise 16 boxes of material spanning the years 1918-1977. The bulk of the collection, however, falls between 1942 and 1971, during Samuels’ tenure as a faculty member in Northwestern University’s English Department. Some material relating to his days as a student at the University of Chicago, his law practice in El Paso, Texas, and his tenure as a teacher at Bryant Stratton College in Chicago and Washington State University at Pullman is also included. The Samuels Papers have been arranged in five general categories: biographical materials, correspondence, academic files, published and unpublished writings and research files. The biographical materials include vita, news releases, autobiographical sketches an miscellany; clippings; reviews of Samuels’ books; and various memorabilia such as programs, book jackets, pamphlets, invitations and other miscellaneous personal materials. The correspondence is divided into two categories: general correspondence, arranged chronologically, and subject correspondence, arranged alphabetically by folder title. The general correspondence includes routine letters between Samuels and various Northwestern administrators like Franklyn Bliss Snyder, J. Roscoe Miller, Robert H. Strotz, Simeon Leland and Payson S. Wild. Correspondence with prominent individuals is partially indexed (see pages 4-5). Some correspondence regarding Samuels’ doctoral dissertation and other subsequent research is included with the general correspondence, rather than with the research

correspondence. The subject correspondence includes correspondence with various colleagues, publishers and officials of professional organizations as well as correspondence concerning lectures, speeches, awards and committees that Samuels served on. Correspondence with prominent individuals included in the subject correspondence has also been partially indexed (see pages 5-6). The academic files include grade books for courses Samuels taught at Northwestern, unbound grade book pages, a few course syllabi, examinations and student papers. Samuels’ lecture notes, most of which are undated, are also included. The lecture notes are arranged alphabetically by title. Samuels’ published and unpublished writings include a copy of the edition of Business English Units, published by Bryant Stratton College. Later editions were titled Business English Projects and published by Prentice Hall. Samuels’ doctoral dissertation, which served as the basis for his book The Young Henry Adams, is also included here. The book introductions were prepared for new editions of Henry Adams’ works that Samuels edited, abridged or contributed notes and appendices. Samuels’ speeches files include note cards and texts of speeches or lectures he delivered. Included among Samuels’ student materials are copies of The Pyramid, the literary magazine produced by his college fraternity, Tau Delta Phi, which he wrote for and edited for one year. The research files include correspondence relating to Samuels research on Henry Adams career including correspondence with members of the Adams family, acquaintances of Henry Adams, and curators and librarians of various repositories that held Adams family materials. Members of the Adams family that Samuels corresponded with include Henry Adams’ nephews Charles Francis and Henry Adams and his niece Louisa Thoron. Also included in this category are Samuels research notes for his doctoral dissertation, notes on writing biography and miscellaneous notes; and transcriptions, photocopies and published materials utilized in preparing the Adams biography.

Separations: Four photographs of Henry Adams’ house (1962), five photographs of groups that Samuels was associated with (fraternity, theater, students, etc.), and three miscellaneous photographs of and relatives of Samuels have been transferred to the University Archives' photograph collection. One 600-foot open reel tape of an interview regarding Samuels’ 1965 Pulitzer Prize on WJJD radio (May 3, 1965) and one pin awarded to Samuels by Tilden Technical High School at its annual Achievement Dinner (May 18, 1960) have been transferred to the University Archives’ artifacts cabinet.

Description of the Additions, Box 17 (1954)

This volume contains the proceedings, petitions, depositions, testimony, etc., in the case of Otto Eisenschiml vs. Fawcett Publications. Samuels gave expert testimony on behalf of the plaintiff. The case involved an article written in True magazine, a Fawcett publication, that was accused of plagiarizing Dr. Eisenschiml’s books. A folder of correspondence and related materials also from this case is in Box 6, Folder 15.

Description of the Additions, Boxes 18-24 (1954-1979)

This addition, comprising seven boxes and spanning the period 1954-1979, consists of one folder of general correspondence dealing primarily with Samuels’ teaching, publications, speeches, and travels; two folders of correspondence with Harvard University Press pertaining mainly to the second and third volumes of his biography of Henry Adams; and six-and-a-half boxes of drafts of the whole, and of various chapters, of Samuels’ Bernard Berenson: The Making of a Connoisseur, published by Harvard University Press in 1979, the first of a projected two-volume work. Also included are summary and excerpt notes; photocopies of letters, diaries, and other pertinent materials; and notes for documentation. A folder of miscellany includes a signed copy of a lease for the apartment in Florence the Samuels rented for eight months in 1972-73, his second Guggenheim year; and a review of the Berenson book that appeared in the .

Provenance: The additions were donated by Ernest Samuels on March 26. 1979, and on November 29, 1982 (Accessions #79-47 and #82-156), and by Nancy N. Clemente, editor at Harvard University Press, on February 12, 1980 (Accession #80-28).

Separations: Thirteen spools or strips of and white 35mm negatives have been separated from the papers. The negatives, on Agfa Gevaert, Kodak, Adox, and Ferrania-Pancro safety films, are from photographs of books and manuscripts pertinent to Samuels’ research interests. Included in these materials are Bernard Berenson correspondence and Henry Adams [?] manuscripts as well as leaves from Arnold’s Culture and Anarchy and Friendship’s Garland

(New York: Macmillan and Co., 1883), The Correspondence of Thomas Carlyle and Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1834-1872, 2 vols. (Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1883), and Walter Pater, The Renaissance, Studies in Art and Poetry (London and New York: Macmillan and Co., 1888). Some of the photographed leaves have been annotated. The negatives have been boxed together and shelved with like photographic materials.

Description of the Additions, Boxes 25-28 (1919-1986)

This addition fills four boxes and spans the period 1919-1986. The addition consists of one folder of biographical material, including a transcript of Samuels’ academic record at the University of Chicago; general correspondence; subject correspondence; speech files; and publication files. The general correspondence pertains primarily to Samuels’ research and teaching, speech and travel arrangements, project funding, and literary and political criticism. The correspondence is arranged chronologically. Subject correspondence forms the bulk of the addition and relates mainly to the Northwestern University English Department, the Library of Congress Council of Scholars, and Samuels’ research and publications. Subject correspondence files are arranged alphabetically according to topical folder headings. Speech files document a few of Samuels’ speaking engagements through drafts, notes, and related correspondence. The publication files relate largely to Samuels’ biographies of Bernard Berenson and Henry Adams. Folders are arranged first according to publication title and topically thereafter. A few folders of articles (some based on speeches), reprints, and reviews complete the addition. Of special interest in this addition are the typescript of Samuels’ interview with Berenson’s close friend, Nicky Mariano (Box 4, Folder 4), materials related to the presentation of the Carl Sandburg Award for Literature in October, 1980 (Box 1, Folders 1 and 7), correspondence and transcripts related to Samuels’ legal work with aliens in Texas (Box 1, Folder 2), and scattered letters pertaining to Meryle Secrest’s biography of Berenson as well as the book on Mary Berenson by Barbara Halpern and Jayne Samuels.

Description of the Addition, Boxes 29-42 (1979-1987)

The addition, which comprises 14 boxes, consists entirely of manuscript drafts of Volume I of Samuels’ biography of Bernard Berenson, Bernard Berenson, the Making of a Connoisseur (Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, 1979), and of manuscript and proof drafts of Volume II, Bernard Berenson, the Making of a Legend (Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, 1987), on which Jayne Newcomer Samuels collaborated. Typescript drafts of Volume I fill Box 29 and half of Box 30. The remaining 12 and one-half boxes are devoted to Volume II. The six drafts (of which five are typescript and one is corrected page proof) are heavily annotated; the several drafts were occasioned by the publisher’s need to excise a significant amount of text from the final draft.

Description of the Addition, Box 42 (1978)

The Addition comprises one folder of notes and correspondence concerning editorial corrections to Bernard Berenson: The Making of a Connoisseur (1979).

Description of the Addition, Boxes 43-46 (1928-1987)

The addition, which fills three and one half boxes and spans the years 1928-1987, is composed principally of correspondence. The first box contains one folder of general correspondence (1935-87), and two folders of correspondence between Samuels and his close friend Joseph Leopold Cohen, exchanged while both were under treatment for tuberculosis, from which Cohen died in 1928 (1925-28). The three remaining folders in Box 43 hold letters written

by Samuels to his mother, Mary Kaplan Samuels, while he was in E1 Paso and Washington state between 1928-39. These letters were written during the period Samuels met and married his wife, Jayne Newcomer Samuels. Correspondence in Box 44, which is arranged alphabetically by correspondent’s surname, concerns for the most part Samuels work documenting and writing the biography of Bernard Berenson. Correspondents include Edward Fowles, partner of Duveen Brothers art dealers; art historian John Rewald; curator of the museum founded through Berenson’s estate and maintained by Harvard University, I Tatti Institute, Myron P. Gilmore; Berenson’s longtime associate Nicky Mariano; and John Walker, Director of the National Gallery of Art. Folder 18 in Box 44 holds photograph prints of letters exchanged between Berenson and Ernest Hemingway; in Folder 19 are typed copies of letters exchanged between Berenson and Henry Adams. The originals of both sets of correspondence are in I Tatti. In Box 45 are contained copies of letters between Samuels and Berenson (1955-58), interviews for the biography (1956-73), publishers’ permissions, correspondence with Harvard University Press, and portions of the manuscript. The last four folders of the addition concern Samuels’ contributions to the Library of America’s edition of Henry Adams’ letters.

Description of the Addition, Boxes 47-49 (1978-1979)

This addition has two major sections and one minor section. The minor section, Box 47, Folder One, is some general correspondence and articles from 1978-79. The second section contains correspondence on Colin Simpson’s publishing of Artful Partners, a book on Bernard Berenson and Joseph Duveen. Much of the correspondence expresses concern over the quality of Simpson’s book and over gaining access to the Duveen archives. The third section of this addition is the manuscript of Samuels’ Bernard Berenson: The Making of a Connoisseur.

This addition is the edited text for the abridgement of Ernest Samuels’ three books about the life of Henry Adams into one volume.

Description of the Addition, Boxes 51-53 (1935-1995)

This addition to the Ernest Samuels Papers fills three boxes and spans the period between 1935 and 1995. It is composed of biographical material, correspondence, financial records, and files relating to Samuels’ publications. The biographical material consists primarily of newspaper clippings relating to Samuels’ research on Henry Adams. The correspondence is divided into two categories: general correspondence, arranged chronologically by date, and subject correspondence, arranged alphabetically by folder title. The general correspondence includes correspondence concerning Samuels’ research on Henry Adams and on Bernard Berenson. The subject correspondence forms the bulk of the correspondence and relates mainly to Samuels’ publisher, Harvard University Press, to the Massachusetts Historical Society and to Northwestern University. The financial records concern royalties from Samuels’ many books, published by the Harvard University Press and by the Houghton Mifflin Company. The publication files, arranged alphabetically by publication, consist mainly of scholarly reviews of Samuels’ books on Berenson and Adams.

Provenance: This addition combines three separate accessions. The first was donated to the University Archives on October 5, 1994 as Accession #94-183; the second series on July 15, 1996 as Accession #96-109 and the third on May 22, 1997 as Accession #97-55.
