energyontario.ca Welcome Welcome to the OEA’s ENERGYCONFERENCE14 that brings together leaders from across the energy sector to discuss the opportunities and challenges within the On- tario energy market.

The OEA has undergone some significant changes over the past year. The strategic focus of the OEA is to advocate and engage the membership on the policies neces- sary to strengthen Ontario’s energy sector while maintaining the networking and edu- cational opportunities that have been the hallmark of the association for many years.

This year’s conference is once again being held in Toronto, which will provide the op- portunity to attract and engage our members and stakeholders on the critical issues facing the energy sector along with the OEA key focus areas and advocacy initiatives.

The energy sector and the government’s recently released Long-Term Energy Plan recognize the importance and need to consider and integrate all energy sources to support and drive economic growth in Ontario. This year’s conference will explore Steve Baker the sector and the transformations and innovations that are underway and shaping its ENERGYCONFERENCE14 Co-Chair; energy future. As one of this year’s conference co-chairs and the current Chair of the Outgoing Chair, Ontario Energy OEA’s Board of Directors, I welcome you to Toronto and am confident that you will Association; President, Union Gas find this year’s conference to be extremely informative and cutting edge. I want to specifically acknowledge and thank the OEA Board and all OEA members for their ongoing support and our sponsors and speakers for this year’s conference. Your collective voice is needed more than ever to continue to shape and strengthen our sector – let your voice be heard!

It’s my pleasure to Co-Chair the OEA’s ENERGYCONFERENCE14 with Steve Baker. This is the first conference since the province’s Long-Term Energy Plan was released, so it’s an ideal time for leaders across Ontario’s diverse energy sector to come to- gether and share expertise, ideas and strategies. Together we can work to ensure that each of our organizations is contributing its strengths for the collective benefit of the people of this province.

In the natural gas sector we see potential to leverage our geographical proximity to abundant and affordable North American natural gas supplies. Whether that be in the area of natural gas for transportation to make business fleets more competitive or extending the reach of the province’s natural gas distribution system to new com- munities, we can step up our contribution to Ontario’s overall competitiveness.

Others gathered for this conference – whether focused on nuclear, hydro, renewable energy or conservation – all have unique strengths that they too bring to this prov- ince. People in this room will also shape the critical policy and regulatory framework Glenn Beaumont required to make progress on all fronts possible. As our energy system evolves, we ENERGYCONFERENCE14 Co-Chair; must ensure that the strengths of everyone represented by this sizable association are Director, Ontario Energy Association; leveraged to their fullest potential. President, Enbridge Gas Distribution It continues to be an exciting time to work in the energy sector and I look forward to its continued evolution with the strong involvement of the OEA’s members.

energyontario.ca I am pleased to extend my warmest greetings to everyone attending ENERGYCONFERENCE14, hosted by the Ontario Energy Association (OEA).

Our Government supports innovative technologies that position our nation at the forefront of the energy economy. This conference provides an ideal venue for government and industry leaders to discuss the latest energy technologies and best practices in energy management. The theme of this year’s summit, “Ontario’s Evolving Energy System,” highlights the ways in which the dynamic energy sector can help to build a strong foundation for Ontario’s economy.

I would like to commend the organizers for ensuring the success of this summit. I am sure that the strategies presented here will benefit ’s competitiveness and future growth while enhancing our quality of life.

On behalf of the Government of Canada, I offer my best wishes for an enjoyable The Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper and productive meeting. Prime Minister of Canada

On behalf of the Government of Ontario, I am delighted to extend warm greet- ings to everyone attending ENERGYCONFERENCE14, an event organized by the Ontario Energy Association (OEA).

A sustainable power supply plays a crucial role in supporting the growth of our economy and a high standard of living. Ontarians deserve a comprehensive ener- gy policy that safeguards the environment and encourages innovation in the field of renewable resources. The best route to achieve this important goal is through open discussion, information exchange and consultation with all of the stakehold- ers. I would like to thank the OEA for organizing this conference that facilitates wide-ranging discussions on the critical issues facing the energy sector.

It is appropriate that the theme for this year’s event is Ontario’s Evolving Energy System. By drawing on expertise from around North America, ENERGYCONFERENCE14 promises to explore new perspectives and ideas that The Hon. Kathleen Wynne will benefit our province in the coming years. Premier of Ontario Please accept my best wishes for a productive and memorable conference.

energyontario.ca On behalf of the Board of Directors of the OEA, I am pleased to welcome you to ENERGYCONFERENCE14 – a forum that is rapidly becoming the most important exchange of ideas and innovation in Ontario’s energy sector.

This is a pivotal time in the energy industry. With a new government in place and as technology advances, policy evolves, and consumer and economic priorities change, it is critical that the OEA is at the forefront of shaping and influencing this progress. As incoming Chair of the OEA, I am committed to ensuring we remain trusted advisors as we chart a new course through sound and stable policy.

Over the coming year, there will be a number of significant issues that deserve careful assessment: new investments in generation and transmission, expansion of the natu- ral gas system, agency mergers, as well as a new CDM framework. Throughout this change, OEA will have a seat at the table, collaborating with government and industry partners to anticipate and meet the needs of our changing landscape. Max Cananzi Incoming Chair, Ontario Energy CONFERENCE offers an exciting glimpse of what is to come – new ideas, Association; President & CEO, ENERGY 14 strong debate and fresh thinking. It’s a great opportunity to gain valuable insight into Horizon Holdings Inc. the sector right here, right now and I look forward to sharing it with you.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the OEA’s ENERGYCONFERENCE14, and I am pleased to join you at this conference for the first time as the OEA’s President and CEO. We have an exciting and invigorating program that should be of interest to everyone.

The conference’s theme is Ontario’s evolving energy system, which I am confident will prove timely for participants. Ontario’s energy system is at a crossroads and industry leaders, energy experts and political decision makers need venues like ENERGYCONFERENCE14 to learn, share, and debate the issues to ensure we are making the most informed decisions for the future. We have a roadmap in the prov- ince’s Long-Term Energy Plan and are excited to be working with our members and government to implement the plan and shape our energy future for a stronger Ontario.

To that end, we have gathered the best and brightest in the energy sector here in Toronto to discuss what a pragmatic and flexible approach to an evolving energy sys- Bob Huggard tem looks like. We will walk through its past, present and future complexities, step by President & CEO step, covering everything from regulation to ownership, from regional planning to the Ontario Energy Association politics of our industry.

Most importantly, thank you to our generous sponsors, fabulous speakers and our ex- tremely dedicated Board of Directors, conference committee and OEA staff for their support in bringing ENERGYCONFERENCE14 to reality. Now get ready to unravel complex energy challenges, together.

SPEAKERS: Steve Baker, President, Union Gas Glenn Beaumont, President, Enbridge Gas Distribution

9:40 AM THE YEAR AHEAD: ECONOMY AND FINANCE Recovery in North America has come on the back of lower interest rates and an improving economy. Economists and market experts have been looking for a rise in interest rates to throttle expected growth. We are at the inflection point. Loom- ing US rate increases followed by lesser and lagging moves in Canada will lead to a weaker Canadian dollar, stimulating economic growth. Financing is stable and valuations could moderate with rising rates, providing a positive environment for continued developments. All the while, risks in China growth, Eurozone banking and policy, Canadian housing and escalating issues in Ukraine and the Middle East can alter outlooks. Looking to the year ahead.

SPEAKER: David Hay, Managing Director & Vice Chairman, CIBC World Markets Inc.
