Today, we welcome the players, management, officials and supporters of Huntly FC to Bellslea Park for our Breedon Scottish Highland League match.

I wasn’t at last week’s match but I believe I missed an excellent performance and it was certainly an excellent result. Well done to everyone involved. I also hear we had a large travelling support so thanks to everyone who attended. We do appreciate the fantastic backing have set themselves up to defend the throw-in. we receive, especially at away games.

That shows how If we put it out they shouldn’t need to. Having picked up three points against Formartine it was really important to build on that with another win against a much improved Rothes team who made life difficult at times for you. How pleased were you with that and how happy were you with the display?

Again I was very happy with the way in which we controlled the game. We created all of the chances and once again our defensive display limited the opposition to very few chances. The first half was probably a bit I tend to always throw little challenges down to the more even with us getting an important goal just before half time. The second half was more in our favour and team. We set out to win 3 in a row which we have done. had their keeper not been in outstanding form then the Now I feel the next two fixtures will be two of the score line may have been more comfortable. It was good toughest of the season. Huntly always seem to turn up to build on the Formartine game and get another 3 against us and have already beaten us in the cup as well points in the league. The clean sheet was also very as drawn with us at their place so they are certainly a pleasing and I think it was just reward for our defensive big challenge for us. Turriff as well will be a very tough performance. game with all the history which goes with it and knowing Kris he will have his guys fired up for when we visit. The

next two games are important so we are concentrating Last week saw an excellent performance at Buckie especially in the first half where we could have been on them and trying to see ourselves through them so we further ahead. The guys managed the second half well are in a good shape going in to our last 4 matches. We and eventually killed the game off to run out very want to finish as high as possible but to do that we will comfortable winners. What impressed you most about have to match Formartine in our results and that will not the performance? be easy as they are an excellent side.

Buckie is always a tough place to go and we have found Today sees another tough match against Huntly who have already won at Bellslea this season so what will it difficult in recent years, including a couple of heavy you be saying to the players to ensure you keep the defeats which are never nice. We started this game on top and could have had a couple of goals before Fig recent winning run going? managed to get the opener. We lost a quick equaliser which was an excellent goal from a Buckie point of view. I think the players are aware of what it now takes in The pleasing thing was that we didn’t panic and kept every game for us to be in with the best chance of playing the way in which we had started and eventually winning. We have performed well over the last month we got another couple of goals to see us in at half time and the results and performances reflect that. I will just 3-1 up. We knew that we would see a reaction and so it be asking for more of the same. I will highlight where I feel Huntly are strong and where we need to pay came where Buckie put us under pressure for the particular attention but in the same token, I will stress opening 15 minutes of the second half. We managed to weather that storm and then take a hold of the to play our game and try and control the game so that remainder of the game, ultimately managing to score a we are the ones asking the questions. I know this game fourth through an unlikely source in Lewis Davidson who won’t be one bit easy but I trust my players and we are was excellent the whole afternoon. Again we created a in a good place so hopefully we can keep the three number of chances but the most pleasing aspect was our points at Bellslea and finish the season strong. defensive display where I think we limited Buckie to only a few shots on goal. To do this against a team as strong All the Best, as Buckie in an attacking sense is very pleasing. I’m huge Mark admirers of Kevin Fraser and Andy MacAskill who are two of the best technical players in this league, however they were second to our midfield in this game and that takes some doing.

With six games left it looks like you can cement a third place finish if you were to win out. Whilst not taking anything for granted I assume that is the target you have set the guys between now and the end of the season?

CCAAPPTTAAIINN’’SS CCOORRNNEERR Afternoon folks, looking back on our last 2 games we’ve carried on the levels we hit against Formartine, at home to Rothes who have spent a few “hundred thousand” on new players but we deserved to win the game. The first half was probably 50:50 but then in the 2nd we dominated and deserved to win.

We then travelled to Buckie, another team who splash the cash and to be honest who we’ve struggled against over the years. We were outstanding again, probably better than we were against Formartine and Rothes, each player won their personal battles, they had one shot on target which they scored from and we should have won more comfortably.

A special shout out to young Kieran who has came in and been immense, Butcher who has been patient and worked hard to get his chance and now taken each one, then Fig for scoring his 200th goal at Highland League level, a fantastic achievement from a top class player.

Today Huntly are the opponents, we’ve struggled against them as well over the years so today is going to be a really tough game. In the last few weeks they’ve had a few indifferent results so they will be looking to bounce back against us, we need to make sure that doesn’t happen. Today is a massive game for us as we’re fighting with Formartine for 3rd place, 3 points is vital today and that is all we are concerned about.

Enjoy the match

All the best

GREAT FOOTBALL OCCASIONS BY EASTON THAIN

th I am turning the clock back to October 10 2003 to a game I was privileged to be at though on this occasion mainly because it saw a bunch of downright cheats get their come-uppance at the hands of . I was one of 5,289 fans at the game and to a man we celebrated the defeating of a team who tried all the ‘dirty tricks’ in the trade and there haven’t been many more satisfying Scotland victories at the level concerned. ‘5,289 fans at a Scotland game, you’re having a laugh’ I hear you cry! Yup, but the venue was not Hampden, it was McDiarmid Park in Perth and it was a quite astonishing game involving Scotland, the Under-21’s that is.

Rarely have I, or my fellow TA foot-soldiers, every directed so much vitriolic abuse at another team and normally I would not condone that kind of behaviour but on this occasion it was completely deserved. It was a night that engineered a complete and utter loathing for another country which developed further due to the disgraceful reaction to the TA soldiers who worked with sunshine appeal helping poor causes when they visit other countries but on visiting this country they got abuse and frequently called ‘losers’. The loathing of this country was also heightened by their last visit to Hampden when they were awarded a scandalous penalty for blatant diving so when they visit again later this year I am sure they will get another ‘friendly’ welcome from the TA! Let’s go back to that night in October 2003 when Scotland U-21 took on Lithuania U-21 in the European U-21 Championship at MacDiarmid Park.

The equation for the Scots was simple, they had to win to stand a chance of reaching the play-offs for the finals and even then it may come down to goal difference between them and the Germans. What then proceeded to occur at Perth had the TA mulling over events for years to come if only for the disgusting display of downright cheating by the Eastern European side who were a total and utter disgrace to the bonny game. They dived, feigned injury, wasted time and tried any trick they could and the unfortunately the Macedonian referee fell for it! This left the TA incandescent with rage and if they could have gotten away with it they’d have raced onto the park and given the Lithuanians a good seeing too, again I would not normally condone such action!

The expected script for the game lasted just five minutes when it was ripped up as a Lithuanian took a pot shot from 35 yards and the ball reared up and bounced over the hapless Derek Soutar. It nearly got worse but a heroic tackle from prevented No 2. Scotland were all over the place but got a golden chance to equalise in 14 minutes when they were awarded a penalty but Simon Lynch fluffed his lines badly. Lithuania then put up a green wall to half-time with gamesmanship rife throughout the ranks along with brutal tackling and this left the Scots frustrated. The Scots had chances but , Simon Lynch and Peter Canero passed them all up.

After the break the pattern continued as the visitors play-acting continued along with brutal clubbing tackles and the Scots anger was intensified to the point that Simon Lynch smashed into an opponent Kucys and he went down as if he had been shot, it was an Oscar winning performance and he then enraged the TA further as he put Lithuania 2-0 up from the spot and then ran up to the ranks of the TA cupping his hands to his ears and the foot-soldiers reaction was not ‘oh, I say, that is unsporting of you old chap’!

The Scots dreams lay in tatters but they appeared to get some consolation when Steven Hammell stabbed home a Tam McManus cross but that is all it appeared to be for 90 minutes were on the clock. However, 90 minutes came and went with no final whistle and then something truly remarkable happened starting when sub Steven Hughes rose to power home a brilliant header off another Tam McManus cross.

The TA were happy as at least the cheats would not win but there was realisation that the dreams of progression were over….or were they? No final whistle and then, incredibly, Paul Gallagher clipped the ball into the box and Steven Hughes brilliantly chested the ball down and smashed a raging volley home. The TA went barmy and when the final whistle went this rose to an unbelievably crescendo as they ‘warmly’ booed the Lithuanians off the park with cries of ‘you got what you deserved’.

It got better with news of the Germans result and Scotland qualified on goal difference which must have brought a wry mile to the face of their coach….ex-German internationalist Rainer Bonhof! Sadly Scotland would not make the overall finals.

The heroes at Perth were – Derek Soutar, Peter Canero (Tam McManus), Steven Hammell, Gary Caldwell, John Kennedy, David McCracken, Gareth Williams (Stephen Hughes), Brian Kerr, Shaun Maloney, Michael Stewart and Simon Lynch (Paul Gallagher).

Huntly’s exploits in the Scottish Cup

Huntly had a reputation for being doughty fighters in the Scottish Cup during the early 1990s. The Strathbogie team, managed by Steve Paterson, claimed the scalps of several Scottish League sides and generated a new respect for Highland League clubs participating in the tournament.

In season 1991-92, Huntly were semi-finalists in the Scottish Qualifying Cup (North) and their Scottish Cup campaign began on January 4 when they eliminated Civil Service Strollers from the competition’s second round after a 4-2 home victory. It was Second Division Dumbarton who were the next to make a cup exit when the Strathbogie team beat them 2-0 at Boghead Park on January 25. The victory was only their second in the Scottish Cup since World War II and Huntly joined Caledonian in the last 16 of the tournament, being the first time two Highland League clubs had gone that far.

Steve Paterson was in the process of creating a successful Huntly team, just as he had previously done with Elgin City. He told a newspaper: “I work to a simple formula when it comes to putting a side together. I look for a sound defence, a hard- working midfield, two sharp strikers and a player out wide. The players have to be prepared to play their part by putting in the effort, but there must be something in it because it worked at Elgin and now it’s working at Huntly.”

Dave McGinlay scored both Huntly’s goals against the Sons. Former Fraserburgh player Brian Thomson nodded the ball into McGinlay’s path for the opener and then minutes before the final whistle Marco de Barros was the provider for the second goal.

There was great excitement in Huntly when the Black and Golds were drawn at home against Airdrieonians of the Premier Division in the fourth round on February 15. The cup-tie would pitch former Peterhead forwards Brian Thomson and Andy Smith against one another. Thomson had joined Huntly from Arbroath while Smith had signed for the Diamonds from Peterhead in July 1990 after playing in the Buchan Cup and the Aberdonian had become a firm favourite with the Broomfield fans.

GP Dr David Connell attended the cup-tie with his father, Norman, who had written a nostalgic article for the match programme about the celebrated Scottish Cup clash between Huntly and Motherwell at a windy Christie Park on January 21, 1928 which he had attended as a schoolboy. The gallant home side had lost 3-0 on that occasion but there were high hopes the Black and Golds might cause a major cup upset this time.

David said the rival fans in the crowd of 3,300 were segregated and the presence of police dogs made sure there wouldn’t be any trouble. The home side were more than a match for the Lanarkshire side, but it was Andy Smith who opened the scoring for Airdrie when he nodded into the net a cross from Alan Lawrence. Huntly equalised through Alan Dunsire after he fired home a cross from substitute Charlie Barbour. David said the home fans were ecstatic, adding: “I remember the tumult – and I think I still have the scars!” Their joy was short-lived as Smith restored Airdrie’s lead after which “the dream quickly faded”. Smith rubbed salt in the wound when he completed his hat-trick in the final minute. Airdrieonians went on to reach the final but their hopes of cup glory ended after losing 2-1 to Rangers with Smith scoring his side’s only goal.

Almost a year later, Queen of the South came north to do battle with Huntly in the second round of the Scottish Cup on Monday, January 4, 1993. The kick-off was delayed by 10 minutes to allow everybody into a wintry Christie Park. The Black and Golds lived up to their cup reputation when goals from Eddie Copland and Doug Rougvie put the home side ahead as they outplayed the visitors in the first 45 minutes. The Dumfries side pulled a goal back through a Darren Henderson free-kick early in the second half. The Second Division outfit fought to try and level the score as they bombarded the home goal, but Huntly held out with manager Steve Paterson coming on as a substitute late on in the game.

When the final whistle sounded many of the 2,500 crowd invaded the pitch to salute their heroes after they had earned a money-spinning, third-round away tie against Hearts. Paterson said after the game that four of his players had been struggling with injuries but they were carried through the game “by pure guts, steely determination and the adrenalin supplied by a tremendous crowd”. Five days later, Huntly’s fairytale cup run ended when they lost 6-0 at Tynecastle. th Among the marksmen was John Robertson who scored his 200 career goal.

In the following season’s competition, Huntly were drawn away in the first round to Albion Rovers on December 11, 1993.

Former Lisbon Lion was Rovers’ manager and had a healthy respect for his Highland League opponents, warning his players that “only their best will be good enough if they want to be in the second round of the cup, and earn the club a bit of badly needed cash”.

In a tight game, Huntly were lucky to escape a first-round exit when David Seggie’s shot hit the net off the woodwork but was chalked off after a linesman ruled Rovers striker Martin Scott was offside. The replay was set for the following

Saturday at Christie Park but the winter weather led to the game being postponed 10 times, much to Gemmell’s annoyance. The match finally took place on Saturday, January 15, 1994 when 2,000 fans saw Huntly come from behind twice to eventually triumph in an eight-goal thriller. Marco de Barros, Gary Whyte, Steve Lennox, Arthur Murphy and Brian

Thomson with a penalty were on target for the home side while Des McKeown, Martin Scott and John McCaffrey replied for

Albion Rovers. Huntly nursed hopes of further cup success but were defeated 2-1 at home by Stranraer.

MATCHHIGHLAND REPORT LEAGUE ROUND– ROTHES UP

Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Fraserbu rgh v Rothes, Saturday 16th February 2019

The Broch were looking to continue where they left off against Formartine United and manager Mark Cowie made one change to the starting line up with Sean Butcher coming in for Greg Buchan who took his place on the bench.

The home side were first to threaten on 4 minutes when Ryan Cowie’s cross to the back post was met by the head of Paul Campbell but Jamie Duff cleared off the line for the visitors. A minute later another cross by Ryan Cowie fell to Scott Barbour inside the area but the Broch hitman couldn’t direct his effort on target. Sean Butcher then tried his luck from outside the area on 18 minutes but Robert Donaldson in the visitor’s goal made a comfortable save. Rothes were showing signs of coming into the match and three minutes later

Steven Anderson picked up a loose ball outside the Broch penalty area but Jamie Beagrie made a well timed block.

On 26 minutes Steven Anderson won the ball in midfield and played it into Kris Duncan who had space and time inside the box but Edward Flinn made a good save to thwart the Rothes forward. A minute later at the other end Lewis Davidson chipped the ball into the Rothes area which was flicked on by Sean Butcher and Aidan Combe saw his volley from 12 yards dip over the crossbar. Rothes had a great chance to take the lead on 34 minutes when Kris Duncan was through on goal but Edward Flinn stood up well to block the striker’s effort with his body.

The visitors had another chance three minutes later when Gary Kerr’s cross was only half cleared and Kris

Duncan saw his header drift just wide. Those misses were to prove costly as the home side took the lead on 42 minutes when Kieran Simpson played the ball up to Scott Barbour who laid it off to Sean Butcher and he found Paul Campbell breaking into the area and the Broch striker saw his first time shot beat Robert Donaldson from 15 yards. A minute later Aidan Combe saw another effort beaten away by the Rothes stopper as the home side searched for a second goal.

Half Time: Fraserburgh 1 Rothes 0

The home side made a good start to the second half when Lewis Davidson crossed from the right and Sean

Butcher saw his shot well saved by Robert Donaldson. On 54 minutes chaos ensued inside the Rothes penalty area with Sean Butcher and Paul Young having good efforts blocked and when the ball broke to Michael Rae he saw his effort from outside the area deflected over the crossbar. Two minutes later Scott Barbour was released through on goal but once again the Rothes keeper pulled off a great save to keep the scoreline at 1-0.

The Broch did make it 2-0 on 68 minutes when Ashley Ballam was penalized for a push on Paul Young outside the area. Paul Campbell took the free kick but he saw his shot deflected into the path of Sean Butcher who slotted home from 10 yards out. Greg Buchan, who had earlier replaced Aidan Combe, then saw his net bound shot well saved by Robert Donaldson as the home side turned the screw. On 85 minutes the Rothes stopper was there to deny Scott Barbour again and with three minutes remaining Paul Campbell drove into the Rothes area but pulled his shot wide.

MATCHHIGHLAND REPORT LEAGUE – BUCKIE ROUND THISTLE UP

Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Buckie Thistle v Fraserburgh, Saturday 23rd February 2019

The Broch were unchanged from the eleven that had beaten Rothes the previous week which meant that Bryan Hay was named amongst the substitutes now that he was free from suspension.

The visitors were straight onto the attack with Scott Barbour finding Aidan Combe on the left wing in the second minute and his cross was headed straight at Lee Herbert in the Buckie goal by Sean Butcher. A minute later and Paul Young found Aidan Combe in a good position but the young winger saw his shot go just over the crossbar.

The chances kept coming for the Broch and Paul Young’s corner on 5 minutes was headed goalwards by Aidan Combe but once again Lee Herbert made a comfortable save. The opening goal was only delayed by three minutes when a long ball behind the Buckie defence was chased down by Scott Barbour who nicked it away from the Buckie keeper before rolling it into an empty net.

The Broch striker almost got a second on 16 minutes when he fired in a shot on the turn which Lee Herbert did well to save. Buckie levelled from their first attack two minutes later when Sam Morrison crossed from the left and Sam Robertson found space inside the area to sweep the ball past Edward Flinn into the net.

The visitors almost restored their lead on 20 minutes when Lewis Davidson played a one-two with Sean Butcher at the edge of the box before seeing his shot go just over. They did retake the lead on 23 minutes though when a corner from the left was only cleared into the path of Aidan Combe and he jinked past a defender before standing up a cross to the back post which Sean Butcher slammed past the Buckie keeper.

Two minutes later and the Broch were awarded a penalty after Paul Campbell was felled inside the box. The young striker dusted himself down before coolly slotting the spot kick past Lee Herbert in the home goal. Just before the half time break a long ball forward was misjudged by Kieran Adams who was short with his header back to his keeper and Scott Barbour managed to get a toe to the ball but saw his effort go just wide of goal.

Half Time: Buckie Thistle 1 Fraserburgh 3

Buckie made a double change at the break but it was the visitors who created the first chance of the second half on 52 minutes when Michael Rae drove into the box and pulled the ball back to Scott Barbour but he fired well over. The home side tried to get back into the match and Andrew MacAskill fired in a shot on 63 minutes which Jamie Beagrie blocked. A minute later Sam Robertson almost got his second of the match but Edward Flinn made another vital stock to thwart the Buckie striker’s 20 yard effort.

At the other end Paul Young’s harmless cross on 67 minutes was left by Kieran Adams and once again Scott Barbour nipped in front of the home keeper but he couldn’t direct his shot on target. A minute later the Broch were awarded a free kick on the right wing which resulted in Sam Morrison being booked for kicking the ball away. Ryan Cowie curled in the free kick which fell to Paul Campbell but he saw his shot blocked. The fourth goal duly arrived on 71 minutes when Paul Campbell’s cross from the left fell to Lewis Davidson at the edge of the Buckie area and he volleyed the ball past the bewildered Lee Herbert in the home goal.

Both sides then made substitutions but it was the visitors who continued to dominate proceedings. Ryan Cowie curled in another dangerous free kick on 83 minutes which Aidan Combe met on the half volley but saw his effort crash off the post with Lee Herbert beaten again. Three minutes later Paul Young saw his shot saved after Sean Butcher and Scott Barbour had combined to set him up. The Broch made a couple of late substitutions to see out time comfortably as they recorded and excellent win over the hapless Jags who saw Kieran Adams receive a yellow card in the dying moments for a poor tackle on Greg Buchan.

Scottish Highland Football Under 17 League - East, Fraserburgh v Keith, Monday 11th February 2019

The Broch almost went ahead after 17 minutes when Logan Watt picked the ball up outside the penalty area and created some space before unleashing a drive which rattled off the crossbar. Not long after the half hour mark Nathan McKeown tried his luck for the visitors from a similar position but Andrew Dunbar did well to save his effort. The home side came within a whisker of taking the lead on 35 minutes when Liam Morrison managed to poke the ball past Harry Cowie in the

Keith goal but a defender got back to clear off the goal-line.

The opening goal was only delayed by a matter of seconds as Ryan Strachan picked out Glen Wyness inside the area and he powered home a header from close range. The home side piled on the pressure and could have had a second when Ryan Strachan fired in a shot on 38 minutes but it was deflected behind. Three minutes before the break Logan Watt lashed in a 25 yard drive which flew past the visitor’s goalkeeper to make it 2-0.

Half time: Fraserburgh 2 Keith 0

The home side started where they left off and could have added a third on 58 minutes when Scott Murison was through on goal but his initial effort was well saved before being cleared to safety by Robbie Urquhart. Two minutes later Scott Murison played in a dangerous cross which was turned into his own net by a Keith defender.

It was 4-0 on 62 minutes when Ross Coutts picked out Ryan Strachan and he made no mistake with a low drive into the net. Five minutes later a good run and cross on the right by Scott Murison saw the Broch player pull the ball back to Zane Laird who steered the ball home. Robbie Urquhart had a late effort for Keith which Owen Campbell easily saved.

HIGHLAND LEAGUEALFIE’S STATS ANGLE SEASON 2018-19

My football memories as a match official - Continuing with my football memories this week takes me to my time as a match official (referee/linesman) probably over a 25 year period. I actually started refereeing when I was still playing Highland League.

Turning up to watch a Peterhead Sunday Welfare League match, the referee failed to turn up when one of the clubs’ officials asked me to referee, which I did. I then did my referee exams which stood me in good stead in later years when I had to stop playing after two bad ankle injuries.

After refereeing in the Amateurs and Juniors for a few years I was then ‘promoted’ and eventually became a Grade 3 Referee which allowed me to referee (and be linesman) the Highland League and to run the line in the old Scottish League structures (the equivalent of today’s SPFL and Leagues 1 and 2).

First of all, I thoroughly enjoyed refereeing in the Highland League, in a way this was me ‘coming home’ to the league I enjoyed when I was playing. I thought I was a fair, honest and consistent referee although no doubt some club officials or spectators perhaps disagreed sometimes!

Anyway, I was always made very welcome by all Highland League clubs before and after a match with some great hospitality experienced (particularly the Broch). Many a time I used to get ‘poured’ into my fellow match official’s car as I left the Broch to return to my home in Ellon! I’m holding Ian Smith personally responsible for this!! Thanks, Ian!

Generally, I think I had a largely uneventful refereeing/linesman career with no major controversy. I have so many memories that it is really difficult to include them all but I’ll try and give you a flavour of some of them. I’ll start by giving you some of my Highland League memories (a few including the Broch!).

There was an Aberdeenshire Cup (or Aberdeenshire Shield) tie between Deveronvale and Peterhead up at Banff when I booked 11 players and sent off 3, a real nightmare of a game from start to finish. I was not a referee prone to ‘dishing out the cards’ like some of today’s referees but at the end of the match I had complete justification that the bookings and sending offs were correct (even my two linesmen that night fully agreed). The two teams had played each other in a League match at the old Recreation Park on the previous Saturday without incident. The trouble started when a Vale player made a bad tackle just after about 2 or 3 minutes and that seemed to set the tone for the rest of the match. I think the Vale won after extra time. Next day’s P&J called it correctly with the heading ‘Vale and Peterhead in night of shame’.

I remember refereeing an Under 18 match again up at between the Vale and Broch when I sent off either Ian Murray or Michael Stephen (can’t remember exactly which one!). They looked quite similar, small in stature (but big in talent as they both had great Highland League careers). Both players had already been booked. Anyway, at the end of the match Brucie Buchan came up to me and said ‘You’ve sent off the wrong player, it should have been the other one, however, it doesn’t matter as they are both hotheads!’

Another match, yet again at the Vale (against Inverness Caley) ended in a 1-0 win for Caley but I had turned down a late penalty appeal for the Vale near the end of the match. Coming off the pitch at the end, many irate Vale spectators were voicing their opinion. It was quite interesting that in the showers afterwards, I overheard Graeme Masson of the Vale saying it was not a penalty, one of the Vale players had gone down in the box trying to win a penalty! Maybe there is a common denominator here in that Princess Royal Park was not a ‘lucky ground’ for me!

My next memories involve two Broch matches at the Bellslea (both cup ties in midweek). In the first one, it was an Aberdeenshire Shield match between the Broch and Huntly when I had occasion to speak to the then Broch manager Charlie Duncan about his conduct on the touch line. I know that Charlie could be difficult to manage at times and I recall he was reported to the SFA on numerous occasions and suffered many touchline bans. Generally, however, I never really had a problem with Charlie as we seemed to have a mutual respect of each other. Anyway on this occasion as I ran to the dug outs to have a word with Charlie, I got completely ‘tongue tied’ and what came out of my mouth was: ‘You’re going to Never Never Land!!’ How or why those words came out I do not know but it totally defused the situation with Charlie at first being startled by my words then both of us cracking up with laughter!! If only some of today’s officials could bring a touch of light relief now and then!

The other Bellslea match was a cup tie between the Broch and Buckie on a bitterly cold Wednesday night, it was absolutely ‘baltic’ with a strong wind blowing for the entire match, must have been the coldest I ever experienced! I was a linesman that night and with the score at 0-0 nearing 90 minutes, I was not exactly welcoming the possibility of another 30 minutes (plus possibly penalty kicks) in Arctic conditions! Then, with the match just about entering stoppage time, Gavin Wemyss hit a screamer from about 25 yards that flew into the net for the Broch winner! Thank you Gavin!!

Next, a terrific and vivid memory for me was my trip abroad as a Linesman to a European Cup match (first leg) between PSV Eindhoven and Zalgiris Vilnius. The European Cup latterly changed its name to what is now the Champions League. The other officials that night were Jim McCluskey, Referee, Mike Pocock from Aberdeen as the other Linesman and Alistair Hewitt as Fourth Official. Sadly, Jim passed away a few years ago, he was a great referee and a really nice guy. First of all, we were met in Eindhoven by our Dutch refereeing ambassador, Jan Keizer, who was to ‘look after’ us during our few days there. Jan was the referee on that fateful night at Ninian Park in a Wales v Scotland World Cup Qualifying tie when sadly passed away towards the end of the match.

On the night before the game, Jan took us to a wonderful restaurant a few miles from Eindhoven for a ‘slap up’ meal, a bit more up market than my usual Wetherspoon’s pub grub!! On the day of the match, we all met at our hotel with a UEFA official to discuss a shirt sponsor deal (the lettering on the away team’s jersey) with a local company and Zalgiris Vilnius. PSV were sponsored by the giant Phillips Electrical company whilst Zalgiris were very poor and did not have a sponsor. I’m pleased to say that Zalgiris did indeed get their shirt sponsor for that night and made a ‘few bob’. We got a tour of the stadium which was really ‘state of the art’ with all of the spectator areas being totally heated – you could be at a match in the dead of winter with your shorts and t-shirts on!

Just before kick off, we were standing in the tunnel with the two teams just awaiting going on to the field of play when we encountered a very strong, powerful pungent odour. We discovered it came from the Vilnius players as they were ‘lacking in personal hygiene’ due to the absence of deodorant! Being a poor club the cost of deodorant was probably an expensive luxury then! A nice touch, however, came from the PSV goalkeeper at that time, Hans Van Breukelen, who at the end of the game, presented a huge holdall of football ‘goodies’ to his opposite number, the Zalgiris goalie. We all hoped that there some deodorant in there!!

The match was fairly uneventful with PSV winning 6-0 after just leading 1-0 at half-time. However, at some stages of the match, I was pelted with hard, uncooked pasta shells from some of the home support! Goodness knows what they would have done if PSV got beat! We were treated to a lovely meal after the match in one of the many restaurants in the stadium. PSV, as far as I recall, were the richest club in Holland at that time but ‘nice’ with it.

For information, they did not like Feyenoord (as did most clubs in Holland) due to some of their violent and unruly fans. So much so, PSV used to monitor the Feyenoord fans when they played in Eindhoven on CCTV from all the train stations and bus stations around Eindhoven before they headed to the PSV Stadium just to see if there was going to be any trouble.

As was customary at that time, a large bottle whisky was given to our Eindhoven referee host and another large bottle was to be consumed in our hotel room before our flight home the next day! I remember Alistair Hewitt (who didn’t really drink) was in the middle of writing a speech for referee George Smith ( based referee) for his retiral dinner on the Saturday. All I can say was that Alistair did indeed have a few whiskies that night but his speech writing (as well as his speech orally) became rather ‘blurred’ as the evening wore into the wee small hours! I think we finally got to bed about 3 o’clock in the morning ready for our flight home at 6am!

An interesting and unusual event came when I was linesman in a Forfarshire Reserve League match between Forfar Athletic and Dundee

United. United were ‘managed’ at that time by that great United player and legend, . Paul was in the United first team then and was no doubt being ‘groomed’ to be a future coach and manager by the then United Manager, Jim McLean. I remember that it was quite a cold, frosty night with about half the pitch being a bit icy.

The aforementioned Mr. Sturrock asked us if there could be a toss of the coin BEFORE the players and match officials went on the field of play. Reason being was that Paul wanted to find out what side of the pitch his team were playing in and what footwear to wear! That is some attention to detail! Of course, the referee that night did allow this and indeed the toss of the coin to decide choice of ends was made in the dressing room before the match with the toss of the coin on the pitch ending up a being a ‘fictitious’ one!

Another interesting (and funny) memory also included Dundee United and their manager, Jim McLean. It was match between Dundee United and Falkirk at Tannadice and at that time the SFA, in their wisdom, had decided that there should be an attempt for better communication and understanding between referees and players, coaches and managers. Fast forward to the present day and nothing seems to have changed! Anyway, what was to happen was that a meeting between the match officials and the two opposing team’s managers and captains in the match officials changing room about 30 minutes before kick-off. The referee was then to address the managers and captains about what he was looking for in the game (e.g. cut out dissent, accept decisions, fair play, respect for one another etc., etc.).

I had my son, Craig, down with me for that game and he was in our dressing room before the game before taking his seat in the stand. I had said to him that when the managers and team captains came in he was to leave the dressing room. I can’t remember who the referee was that day, so about 2.30 in came the two managers, Jim McLean of United and Jim Jefferies of Falkirk with their respective captains, of United and Brian Rice (now Hamilton manager) of Falkirk.

For those of you who don’t remember Jim McLean, he could be quite a volatile and outspoken manager who regularly berated and ‘savaged’ match officials. He was also a brilliant coach and, as I am about to relate, also had a sense of humour! I then said to Craig, ‘right, leave the room now’ when Jim McLean pipes up: ‘No, son, you stay, you probably know more about football than all of us here put together’! Brilliant! As far as I recall, the meeting descended into farce as the referee in question related to what he was looking for and then Jim McLean started to get angry and said the referee the previous week ‘didn’t do any of that and was hopeless’ or words to that effect! The SFA eventually scrapped those meetings after only a few weeks.

Other good memories for me was running the line at Pittodrie in two big matches – a friendly between the Dons and Hamburg and also a match between the Dons and Manchester United to commemorate the Tall Ships Race which came to Aberdeen that year (sometime in the early 90’s, I think).

A further memory was the great swearing at me and not being sent off! I was linesman for an Aberdeen Reserves match (can’t remember who they were playing) at Pittodrie and Willie was playing for the Dons Reserves. Willie was trying to make a comeback for the first team after having suffered a few serious injuries to one of his knees. He was really struggling that day and was actually ‘limping’ through the game, he could hardly move. At one stage during the match, he had shouted for an offside decision, which I didn’t give. He then shouted to me: ‘you effin diddy’.

Now you’ll know what ‘effin’ is but to the uneducated, the word ‘diddy’ is a West of Scotland expression meaning ‘you are a fool or an idiot’ or words of that ilk. By the letter of the law, I should have raised my flag, got the referee over to speak to me to say that Mr. Miller had used foul and abusive language towards me and should be sent off. Willie had been a fantastic player in his prime and I felt really sorry for him that day that to see him virtually hirpling through the match, was very sad. I did not get the referee’s attention and Willie stayed on the park. Willie, a short time afterwards, never returned to first team football and had to give up playing due to his injuries.

Those then, are just some of my many memories of my time as a match official. Enjoy today’s game.

Alfie Smith (Alfie’s thoughts are his own and do not necessarily reflect those of Fraserburgh Football Club).
