Introductions "Ie are sometimes asked, "Why do yiu believe in Christ"?, What has he done for you"? Or "How did he save you? Again we re told in the Scripture to "...Be ready always to live an swer to every man that ask us a reason of the hope that is us with meekness and fear." (pet. 3:15b)

We have read and heard tremendous testamonies of people* whose lives were transformed as the result of their X encounter with Christ Jesus. One of those was a man who was born blind, but when he confronted Christ about his ni .- situation, he was made whole. The Pharicees and others wanted to know who had healed this man and by what means he had been made to see? Their #K concept about Jesus is that he was a sinner but the only explicit testamony this man had about himss&lf was, ".... Whether he be a sinner or not, I know rot: One thing I know, tha t whereas I was blind, now 1 see" (John8:25)

We don't need to know everything about Personal Evange- lism before we can win a soul to Christ, but our own personal testamony about what Christ has done in our lives and what he continues to do can influence the lives of others and bring them to the Saving knowledge of Christ.

As we examine Paul's testamony of his convention exper- ience in Acts Chapter eight, it is no wonder that his life is divided into four stages: 1. What was Paul's life before he got to know the Lord Jesus (yes 1-6)? 2. How he knew God was speaking to him *vss 7-10)? 3. How Paul re ally got sav'ed(vss 13-16)? 4. What Christ was presently doing in his life per- sonally (vss 17-21)?

Paul's Comversion experience was very sudden and dra- matic. His situation experience may not be as power- ful as ours but we can know with certainty how the Lord speaks to us at one time in our lives and how he changed us. We can follow these 4 stages and write out our personal testamonies experience: 1. Your life before you knew Christ... 2 0Iow you knew God was speaking to you. 1,1 ORDER OF WORLHIP Worship to praise, honor, &lorify and reverence God, It is to ack- nowledge the presence of God, in light of His holiness and to see ourselves in light of our unworthiness (Isa. 6:

GOD AND WORSHIP God demands true worship(John 4 :22. This is more than a religious Pgathering on Sunday mornings or a day designated, when prayers are offered, hymns sung, offering collected, and the word read or preaclied. It is possible to do these, and yet don't worship. See Isa. 1:12-17; Hosea 6:f; Amos 5:21-24.

1.3 True Worship To'coo before God with a contrite spirit (Ps. 51:16-). 1.4 Order of Worship To formulate an order of worship that meets needs, one should ask oneself the following questions: For whom? For white or for black? For youth or for children? For the unlettered, semi-literate, literate, or for all of these in one service? For the bereaved or for those celebrating in joy? Planning a good wos p calls fo' flexibility in t choie of hymns, choruseb, n wagrospirin3as and the content ote mbsage 2.1 Lord Supper Four views that surround the lord's Supper

2.1.1 The Roman.Catholic theory know as transubstantiation. According to this view when the Priebt consecretes the bread and the wine, they are miraculously converted into the substance of the flesh and blood of Christ. Consequently, those who part take are eating the real flesh and drinking the blood of Christ. A'ny part of the elements - bread or wine is divine, Hence it is not ')ecessary that the laity part take of both bread and wine. The laity tare given the bread, and the priest alone communion in both bread anid ,wine. The'Roman Catholic interchangingly use~the words: "Eucharist," "Sac rament," and Mass for the Lord's Supper.

The mass is a propitiatory sacrifice for tghsins of the living and. instrument o: divine grace. the deal. The "Eucharist" or "Sacrament" A The Roman Catholic theory is built on the i-ILe'ivalm l ages philosopy of realism, Thus the doctrine of transu~bstantiation is based on a sophisticated philosophical attempt to explain the real presence of Christ in terms of philosophy of the day. The Roma atolic believe that the tread actually changes when the priest 'ieHoc est corpus meum" ("This is my body),

S1 2.1.2 The.Lut1ran theory known as consubstantiation, iis theory affirms,* Christ present "in, with, and under" the substance of b'rea'. and wine. Luther. _, the originator of this view insisted on a literal interpretation of the words, "This is my body and This is my 'lood" (Matt. 26:26-27). Luther built his theory on the omnipresence of Christ... If "Christ is present every where at the same time," the Christ id also present in the bread and wine. Luther avoided scholastic attempts like the Roman Catholic to difine precisely the nature of Christ's present in the elements, He said the final nature of the present is left with God. "I would rather experience it than understand it'- Luther,

2.1,3 The Calvinistic theory propounded This theory was y John Calvin, a Geneva Reformer in the sixteenth century. This theory holds that Christ is really and fully present in the Lord's Supper by the power of the Holy Spirit. They see the communion 4s a means of grace.

2,1.4 The Congregational or Free Church view aptist and other conrrerational or Fre Evanfelical churches view the Lord Supper as a symbol ('Iatt 26:26-28J ,Ba'tist rejects the idea that the Lord's Supper is a sacramnt" - instrument of divine grace.

1. Close Communion 2. Open Communion 3.1, E1vangelism Telling the good news in the power of the Holy Spirit and loqving the result with God.

3.2 Three kinds of evangelism Personal euangeliam - an obligation upon every >orn again believer.

Local church evangelism - an effort on part of a local church to equip all of its'members to become witnesses of the wofi in their community, the Nation, and the world,

Denominational evangelism - An effort to toll the gospel to those without Christ in cities, villages and towns that will lead to church planting, CITATION

A Tribute to the late Dr. Robert Johxson-Smith, I, at the Celebration of Thanksgiving service held at Salem Baptist Church, Jenkin Town, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, Septe mber 2%, 2001, from St. Simon Baptist Church, , Liberia.

Life does bring some sad and horrible mornents that we do not want to know or experience. This is evident by the sudden news of the passing away of Dr. Robert Jonson-Smith, . an iLLastriou son o the United State& a devout Christian Leader, a Father, Pastor Emeritus of Salem artistt Church of Jenkin Towu, Pennsylvania, and an intimate Frien.:d of Saint Simon Baptist Church, Monrovia, Liberia. Though shocked by the news of his passing, but not least surprised because we knew Dr. Smith upon emrbracingthe Christian fifth. had over the years been preoccupied with a degree of spiritu preparation for the departure which becamrie a reality on Saturday, September 21, 200 L Like a 1haved soldier, he has fought and conquered the vices of this life, and is nIow resting peacefalliy with the Lord.

Saint Sihon will forever cherish the relationship she enjoyed over the years which was first initiated through Dea~con A. Ronieo Horton and Dr. Robert Johnson - Smith, L,which precipitated a visit of a delegation from St. Simon to Salem in 1990. This relationship has received continuious watediag by the present leadership and members of Salem and the present leadership and members of our church. We are confident that he who has began this good wrk in us will br itg to completion

t is our prayer that the Families of our both Churches will accept the reality of the departure of Dr. Johnson-Smith. 1 and take heart. Let us not forget that Earth loss is Heaven gam. iaIy God ,onsoe, and comfort you as you celebrate the homne going of Dr.. Smith on this 29*h Day of September 2001

MINISTRY PROPOSAL; This proposal calls for the creation and running of an Academy of Ministry to train church leaders, raise the level of church development in Liberia and promote church involvement in community work throughout the nation. The Academy will be a ministry of St. Simon Baptist Church, dedicated to training Rural Evangelists and Urban Church workers who are called to labor in Christ's vineyard but due to limited formal education cannot attend Seminary. THE ST. SIMON BAPTIST CHURCH The St. Simon Baptist Church was founded in 1923 through the missionary efforts of Rev. Dr. Daniel Richard Horton and Dr. (Mrs.) Ora Milner Horton. The Hortons arrived in Liberia in 1917 to serve as American Baptist Missionaries. Early in their fruitful ministry in Liberia, they worked at the Bible Industrial Academy, BIA in Grand Bassa County. Little did they know then that their work would be entirely but not exclusively with Bassa the people. After two years, Dr. Horton and his wife were transferred to Monrovia to serve as Superintendent of the Foreign Mission Board's work in Liberia. Dr. Horton was also called to serve as Pastor of the Providence Baptist Church in Monrovia apart from his duty as Superintendent of the Foreign Mission in Liberia. It was while at Providence as Pastor that he observed some Bassa People in the congregation and then decided to reconnect with the Bassa people he had fallen in love with during his work at the Baptist Industrial Academy (BIA) in Fortville, Grand Bassa County. It was not long before Dr. Horton would ask someone to lead him to where the Bassa people lived in Monrovia. That first meeting with some leaders of the tribe on the South Beach in Monrovia was the beginning of a revival that started the St. Simon Baptist Church in 1923. His first message to the Bassa people was contained in a hymn, "More About Jesus" which they learned to sing in the Bassa language. When St. Simon was established, a modest thatch hut was erected to serve as a place of worship, Charles D.B. King, President of Liberia and his entire cabinet was invited to the opening. Later on the members raised money to purchase a large portion of land outside the city limits and named it the Bassa Community. THE LIBERIA DIRECT BAPTIST MISSIONARY CONFERENCE (LDBMC) As the work of St. Simon was growing in the Bassa Community, pockets of Bassa people living in other parts of Monrovia were soon evangelized; forming other churches, beginning with Berea Baptist Church in Plum or, Bedside Baptist in Logan Town, Antioch Baptist in ELWA and Living Water Baptist Church on the Old Road. These four churches with St. Simon, their Mother Church soon felt the need for fellowship and the desire to spread the gospel to other parts of Liberia. They met to form the Liberia Direct Baptist Missionary Conference in 1938 to 'win souls and train stewards for Christ'. The Conference now has more than 44 churches in Liberia and neighboring . The work now embraced all ethnic groups in the Liberia.

Rationale for the D.R. Horton and Ora Horton Academy of Ministry: The vision of Dr. and Mrs. Horton was for the church to learn more about Jesus. Their mission philosophy emphasized evangelism, education and industry. They believe the surest way evangelism and industry could be achieved was through education of the people. Dr. Horton emphasized Sunday school in all the churches he organized. Mrs. Horton started the Bassa Community School to train the young people of the community during the day and at night conducted literacy program for members of the church and adults in the community who were interested in learning to read and write. The Liberia Direct Baptist Missionary Conference met three times a year (March, July and December). The entire March Conference was dedicated to training church workers in all aspects of church leadership. Dr. Horton was convinced that by learning more about Jesus the church would recognize the things of Christ and seek his holiness. Through these training Dr. Horton was able to empower strong spiritual leaders like the late Rev. E.T. Lewis who founded more than 14 of the 44 churches of the Conference by duplicating the method he learned from his mentor. Others included Rev. Willie K. Vambram, Jacob Benjiman, Dea. Jacob P. Mason and Pazio Vambram. To help the people help themselves, Dr. Horton started the Bassa Brotherhood Benefit and Industrial Society. The Society was dedicated to taking care of basic social needs in the community and providing encouragement for the people to engage in gardening and farming in addition to evangelism and education. I believe that the vision of the founders of St. Simon and the Conference was not only relevant for their work but also for the development of Christian work in Liberia in general. In order for Christian work in Liberia to continue, develop culturally and spiritually; empowering Christians and giving them a sense of community, it is pass time for an institution that will provide the kind of training to the hundreds of rural churches and their leaders. It is time to help them acquire the necessary skills to better serve and carryout their work effectively. Dr. Horton's method of training helped the illiterate leaders of the Conference developed into vibrant evangelists, preachers and church leaders. It is a kind of paradigm for church development in Liberia among the rural and illiterate population. THE DANIEL RICHARD & ORA MILNER HORTON ACADEMY OF MINISTRY The academy will train men and women to further their calling in Christian Ministry, providing them with the biblical basis for ministry within the context of the local church; equipping them with skills needed to succeed in their ministry and developing their talents to enable them clearly and forcefully witness to the power of Jesus Christ. The goal of the Academy is to provide training for leaders who will return to rural Liberia with skills that will help churches live out the Christian beliefs in the most effective ways possible.

The Curriculum of the Academy is Bible centered. Courses to be taught include Bible and Church History, Evangelism, English Composition, Old and New Testament Surveys, Sermon Preparation, Church Planting and basic Literacy. There are three programs available to students in the Academy: The Associate degree in Church Planting is a two years course. It is open to anyone with a High School level education. The Certificate in Evangelism is also a two years course opened to anyone with at least an eighth grade education. There is also the Continuing Functional Literacy Training for any Church worker interested in learning to read the Bible and write in English. This is an ongoing program that will give out proficiency certificates yearly Location of the Academy & Enrollment: The Academy shall be located in Monrovia for now and shall operate a single location until in the future when other training facilitates are to be established in other parts of Liberia. It is expected to enroll at least fifty students when the Academy begins operation. To begin, we will need to rent space in Monrovia until at a time when we will be financially able to buy or build our own place. Administration, Staff & Faculty: A Superintendent and four Staff Members shall administer the Academy. Five faculty members with at least a college degree shall be hired to teach at the Academy as a starting point. Conclusion: To firmly continue building on the legacy of our founders and believing in their philosophy of promoting evangelism and industry of the Liberian people through education, we propose the Drs. Daniel Richard and Ora Horton Academy of Christian Ministry not just as a memorial to their work but as a testimony and continuation of their paradigm of training responsive church leaders for a time such as this. Benefits of this Academy to the churches and people are enormous. It will prepare leaders who will lead the churches in rural Liberia reap the harvest of the gospel by developing strong and well informed spiritual community leaders. Our goal, contingent on your support is to start the school by the beginning of 2004. IJL
