Preface tu the Translated Editiun of Overbeck's The purpose of this project is twofold : first, to present what may be the-first full English translation of a much-qnoted, controversial German work; and second, to bring together in one place enough background material to present a reasonably coherent picture of why Overbeck was saying what he was, when he was- There are many references in theoïogical and hlstorical works -- certainly by Erglish-speakers, but notably by Germans as well -- to the tortuous turns of phrase employed by Overbeck. He himself alludes to his style and to the customary daim of his readers that he is incomprehensible- There is Little doubt that Qverbeck's difficult and long-winded expression has been largely responsible for his not being translated before now. Due to the meaning the Notebook held for me personally, whose entire life -- at least the public side of it -- had been determined by it, 1 felt 1 ha& either to accept the idea in toto or else consent to a new edition under new printing with an unaltered text (which ultimately amounted to a dereliction of duty, and thus was not to be considered). But my Notebook was almost thirty years old, and 1 myself was in my skty-fifth year, So how could 1 really help on this occasion, from the outside, with al1 my inclination to do so? Full of distress, 1 knew 1 could only help myself by the dangerous [xiii] act of asking my readers to take up the little volume before them.

I argue that the theoretical problem raised by recent studies on Barth’s notion of experience after his break with liberalism (i.e., the apparent inconsistency between Barth’s move towards an increasingly neo-Kantian understanding of experience and his emphasis on the existential and psychological dimensions of experience) can be solved by the hypothesis of a Nietzschean influence on Barth's epistemology in the 1920s. I defend not only the historical plausibility but also the conceptual fecundity of such a hypothesis, which casts a new light on Barth’s relation to philosophy and the notion of experience, and lays the basis for a consistent Barthian theology of experience. *** Theology is not a discreet slice of knowledge you could simply add to one philosophy or other. It exists nowhere but through philosophy, and that is why Barth’s theological innovation cannot manifest itself apart from philosophical innovation. Barth is not a philosopher, and he does not explicitly develop his concepts in a philosophical way. But Barth repeatedly claims we cannot grant theology an extraordinary status among human discourses.

    Religions of foreign origin have shaped Chinese cultural history much stronger than generally assumed and continue to have impact on Chinese society in varying regional degrees. The essays collected in the present volume put a special emphasis on these “foreign” and less familiar aspects of Chinese religion. Apart from an introductory article on Daoism (the BKGA 85 BKGA Religion in China proto­typical autochthonous religion of China), the volume reflects China’s encounter with religions of the so-called Western Regions, starting from the adoption of Indian Buddhism to early settlements of religious minorities from the Near East (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) and the early modern debates between Confucians and Christian missionaries. Contemporary Major Concepts and religious minorities, their specific social problems, and their regional diversities are discussed in the cases of Abrahamitic traditions in China. The volume therefore contributes to our understanding of most recent and Minority Positions potentially violent religio-political phenomena such as, for instance, Islamist movements in the People’s Republic of China. Donahue This dissertation traces the origins of the League of Nations movement during the First World War to a coalescent international network of ecumenical figures and Protestant politicians. Its primary focus rests on the World Alliance for International Friendship Through the Churches, an organization that drew Protestant social activists and ecumenical leaders from Europe and North America. The World Alliance officially began on August 1, 1914 in southern Germany to the sounds of the first shots of the war. Within the next three months, World Alliance members began League of Nations societies in Holland, Switzerland, Germany, Great Britain and the United States. The World Alliance then enlisted other Christian institutions in its campaign, such as the International Missionary Council, the Y.M.C.A., the Y.W.C.A., the Blue Cross and the Student Volunteer Movement.     Brigitte Klosterberg (Halle an der Saale) Hungarica in den Beständen der Bibliothek und des Archivs der Franckeschen Stiftungen zu Halle Die Beziehungen zwischen den Franckeschen Stiftungen zu Halle und Ungarn gehen in das frühe 18. Jahrhundert zurück. Sie spiegeln sich heute in den Beständen des Archivs und der Bibliothek der Franckeschen Stiftungen wider. Prof. Dr. István Monok erkannte schon in den 90er Jahren, als er zu regelmäßigen Besuchen in die Franckeschen Stiftungen kam, dass diese Bestände beredte Zeugnisse für den deutsch-ungarischen Kulturkontakt in der Frühen Neuzeit bereithalten und es sich lohnen würde, die Hungarica in den Beständen der Bibliothek und des Archivs genauer zu verzeichnen und zu untersuchen. Deshalb lud er im Jahr 2000 den damaligen Direktor der Franckeschen Stiftungen Prof. Dr. Paul Raabe (1927–2013) nach Budapest ein. Raabe war nach seiner Pensionierung als Direktor der berühmten Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel nach Halle gekommen, um die vom Ruin bedrohte Schulstadt des 18. Jahrhunderts wiederaufzubauen. Seine letzte Reise als amtierender Direktor der Franckeschen Stiftungen führte ihn nach Budapest. In seinen Erinnerungen In Franckes Fußstapfen: Aufbaujahre in Halle an der Saale (2002) hat er die Begegnung mit István Monok eindrucksvoll beschrieben: „Eine meiner letzten Amtshandlungen kurz vor meinem Ausscheiden war eine Reise nach Ungarn in Begleitung meiner Frau und unserer Bibliothekarin Dr. Britta Klosterberg. Der neue Generaldirektor der Nationalbibliothek Budapest, unser langjähriger Freund Professor István Monok, hatte uns zur Unterzeichnung eines Vertrags über die Zusammenarbeit zwischen den beiden Institutionen eingeladen. In dem hoch über der Stadt gelegenen Burgkomplex empfing er uns in seinem großzügigen Dienstzimmer. Auf dem Rundgang waren wir von der monumentalen Gestaltung der Lesesäle und Arbeitsräume, der Schatzkammern und der riesigen Flure beeindruckt.

    Wolfgang Schmid Wie fromm waren die Winninger im 19. Jahrhundert? Eine evangelische Enklave im Kulturkampf Seit spätestens 1575 gilt Winningen an der Mosel als evangelische Muster- gemeinde. In diesem Jahr sprach ein Visitationsprotokoll von einer »feinen, wohlgezogenen Gemeinde […] mitten unter Papisten gelegen«1. 250 Jahre später (1831) veröffentlichte Johann August Klein eine Beschreibung des Moseltals. Er berichtete von »einem wohlhabenden Marktflecken. Gutaussehende Häuser, regelmäßig ge- reiht, reinliche, gepflasterte, wenn auch schmale Straßen, geordnete Thätigkeit im Innern geben ihm etwas Städtisches. Bürgermeister, Einnehmer, Kreisarzt wohnen daselbst. Der Ort hat eine eigene Apotheke, die einzige bis Cochheim. Zwei evangelische Pfarrer stehen dem Kirchlichen vor, eben so viele Schulleh- rer besorgen den Jugendunterricht. Rechtlichkeit und Bildung machen die Be- wohner in der Umgebung geschätzt. Insulariern gleich, seit Jahrhunderten von lauter katholischen Nachbarn umgeben, unterscheiden sie sich auffallend durch Sitten, Mundart und Tracht«2. Winningen befand sich ähnlich wie das bekannte gallische Dorf in einer Art Belagerungszustand, war eine evangelische Insel in einem katholischen Meer. Deutlich unterschied man sich von den Bewohnern der Nachbarge- meinden, die sich nach den Karnevalstagen angeblich mit einem Aschen- kreuz ihrer kleineren und alle paar Jahre mit einer Wallfahrt zum Heiligen Rock oder wenigstens nach Kamp Bornhofen ihrer größeren Sünden entledigen konnten. The leading men and women of the early church were missionaries and evangelists: Peter in Jerusalem, in Samaria, in the cities of the coastal plain, in northern Anatolia and in Rome; Stephen and Philip in Jerusalem, in Samaria and in the cities of the coastal plain; Barnabas in Antioch and in Cyprus; Paul in Nabatea, in Syria, in Cilicia, in Galatia, in Asia, in Macedonia, in Achaia, in Illyria, in Rome and in Spain; Priscilla in Corinth, in Ephesus and in Rome; Timothy in Macedonia, in Achaia and in Ephesus; Phoebe in Corinth and in Rome; Apollos in Achaia, in Ephesus and on Crete; Thomas prob- ably in India, Matthew probably in Pontus, perhaps in Ethiopia, possibly in Syria; John Mark in Antioch, in Cyprus and in Rome; Luke in Antioch and in Macedonia; John in Jerusalem, in Samaria and in Ephesus. More names could be mentioned. You probably noticed that this list of names included all authors of the books of the New Testaments, with the exception of James, Jude and the unknown author of the Letter to the Hebrews.

Drickamer As Lutheranism enters the 1980's some theologians are already suggesting that the denominational "battle for the Bible" waged with such fervor in the 1970's was really a "departure from mainstream classical Protestantism." These scholars contend that "the Scripture ruckus" was caused either by "the importation of Fundamentalism into Lutheranism" or else it was "a peculiar distortion wrought by modern Missouri." Such opinions could hardly be further from the truth. Lest this view gain undue credence, we believe it is helpful to indicate that Lutheranism, when it has been true to its tradition, has always had a high regard for the Scriptures as the Word of God. Such a conviction, furthermore, was, in former times, not limited primarily to the Missouri and Wisconsin Synods. It was nearly universal among America's Lutheran bodies. An illustration of this thesis can be found by looking at the doctrine of Biblical authority in the theology of Henry Eyster Jacobs, a major Lutheran theologian of the start of this century, who had no organic connection with either of the Midwest Lutheran Synods that today uphold a "high view" of the Bible.
