Graeme Ward Exegesis, Empire and Eschatology: Reading Orosius’ Histories Against the Pagans in the Carolingian World This essay seeks to uncover nuggets of eschatological thought in three Carolingian commentaries on the Gospel of Matthew. It does so by examining the different ways that Hrabanus Maurus, Paschasius Radbertus and Christian of Stavelot read and in- terpreted Orosius’ Seven Books of Histories Against the Pagans, a work of Christian apologetic history composed c. 417. Orosius’ Histories, which were hugely influential throughout the whole of the Middle Ages, typically have been seen as expressing a dis- tinctly eschatological understanding of the Roman Empire, an understanding that is frequently contrasted with that of Orosius’ teacher and dedicatee: Augustine of Hippo. The exegetical reception of Orosius, which has not yet been subject to close scrutiny, reveals that some ninth-century intellectuals did not use Orosius to show that the du- ration of the world was bound to the lifespan of the Roman Empire. Rather, they em- ployed the Histories as an authoritative account of the beginnings of the ecclesia, the Christian Church. These biblical exegetes fashioned close intertextual bonds between Orosius’ narrative and Matthew’s account of the birth of Christ. By bringing Orosius into dialogue with the central narrative of Christianity, they invested the Histories with eschatological meaning. 1 Introduction Eschatological thought permeated all forms of Christian practice and belief in the Middle Ages, not least because it was written into the scriptural core of Christianity: the books of the Old and New Testaments.1 Consequently, biblical exegesis – that is, the interpretation of the various books of the Bible – comprised a particularly im- portant medium through which ideas about Last Things were communicated to me- dieval monks and clerics, and perhaps also lay people too. -

I Abstract The aim of this study is to apply Ricoeur’s (1913-2005) philosophical hermeneutics to the doctrine of the Trinity and to move and expand the doctrine from the notional sphere to the pragmatic field through trinitarian hermeneutics. The basic structure of this thesis is constituted by interaction between three fields: Ricoeur’s hermeneutical detour (symbols, metaphors, and narratives), doctrine of the Trinity (the analogical, the immanent, and the economical Trinity) and biblical texts. -

THE KENTUCKY GILPINS By GEORGE GILPIN PERKINS HIS genealogical study of the Gilpin families, covering the period of twenty generations prior to the Gil pin emigration to Kentucky, is gathered solely, so far as the simple line of descent goes, from an elaborate parchment pedi gree chart taken from the papers of Joshua Gilpin, Esquire, by his brother, Thomas Gilpin, Philadelphia, March, 1845, and in part, textu ally, from the work: by Dr. Joseph Elliott Gilpin, Baltimore, 1897, whose father and the Kentucky emigrants were brothers. His authority was a Genealogical Chart accompanying a manuscript published 1879 by the Cumberland and West moreland Antiquarian and Archreological Society of England entitled "Memoirs of Dr. Richard Gilpin of Scaleby Castle in Cumberland, written in the year 1791 by the Rev. William Gilpin, Vicar of Boldre, together with an account of the author by himself; and a pedigree of the Gilpin family." [ 5 ] T H E KENTUCKY GILPINS Richard de Gylpyn, the first of the name of whom there is authentic knowledge, was a scholar. He gave the family history a vigorous beginning, by becoming the Secretary and Adviser of the Baron of Kendal, who was unlearned, as were many in that day of superstition and igno rance, and accompanying him to Runnemede, where the Barons of England, after previous long parleys with the unscrupulous and tyrannical King John, forced him to grant to his oppressed people Magna Charta and, themselves, voluntarily lifted from their dependants many feudal op pressions. -

THE INTELLECT-WILL PROBLEM IN THE THOUGHT OF SOME NORTHERN RENAISSANCE HUMANISTS: COLET, ERASMUS, AND MONTAIGNE ERWIN R. GANE Pacific Union College, Angwin, California In an earlier essay I have dealt with the intellect-will problem in the thought of Nicholas of Cuss.' In the present article I will treat the same question in the thought of three other Northern- Renaissance humanists: Colet, Erasmus, and Montaigne. Finally in my "Summary and Conclusion" at the end of this essay, I shall endeavor to draw some comparisons and contrasts covering all four of the men. 1. John Colet Colet's View of Man's Nature John Colet (d. 1519), perhaps most famous as an English educator in Oxford and London, adhered to the Augustinian doctrine of original sin, involving inherited guilt and universal human depra~ity.~When Adam sinned the whole race sinned so that his descendants were born with depraved natures and per- verted intellects and wills, subject to the sentence of eternal death. Leland Miles suggests that Colet argued for a tendency to evil in fallen man with no "absolute obliteration of free will."3 Ernest Hunt quotes Colet to prove that his concept involved total depravity of reason and will in relation to spiritual matters: lSee AUSS 12 (July 1974): 83-93. Ford, CSC, S.T.D. ABSTRACT This dissertation investigates and compares the hermeneutics of the French Jesuit theologian, Henri de Lubac (1896-1991), and the German philosopher, Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900-2001). The writings of both Gadamer and de Lubac continue to generate scholarly investigation, including proposals to apply their insights to contemporary biblical interpretation. Although de Lubac and Gadamer were contemporaries, they never directly engaged each other’s writings; this dissertation brings their thought into dialogue. Chapter One provides a biographical overview of the lives of both scholars by situating the texts that will be examined within the broader context of each work. Since de Lubac approached the subject of biblical interpretation chiefly as an historian of exegesis, the first step in this comparative investigation is a formulation of de Lubac’s hermeneutical principles. Unlike most interpretions, the thesis is that the Augustinian inner word does not show the potentialities, but rather the ineffectiveness of ontological hermeneutics. In the first section, it is argued that for the later Augustine the verbum in corde is the consequence of a Word- and Truth- event. In the second section, the author suggests that Gadamer has properly understood the verbum in corde as a matter of faith. -
