Troup Christian preaching has been a central and significant custom to the practitioners of biblically confessional and creedal communities in worship, evangelization, and discipleship. Yet modern preachers confront two challenges presented by the New Homiletic and the media environment. Undue favor toward narrative-based form, audience-oriented eventfulness at the expense of biblical authority, and shifting media that alter the preacher’s identity and incapacitate the preacher’s orality have led to a dissonant handling of form and content and thus a profound decline in the quality of the Christian pulpit. This project grows out of an attempt to integrate an Augustinian hermeneutic and homiletic, Ciceronian coordinates, and an Ongian perspective on orality and literacy. It proposes an oral homiletic praxis, in anticipation of rectifying current homiletic deficiencies, that proceeds in the fashion of comprehension-internalization-proclamation. iv The design and plan of this homiletic praxis fulfills Augustine’s two-sided scheme of treating the Holy Scriptures, performs Cicero’s five rhetorical arts, and proclaims the gospel in a spontaneous, memorable, extemporaneous, and eventful way like the speakers of primary oral cultures do. A sound praxis of oral homiletics fuses form and content, oriented toward a harmonious treatment of scriptural authenticity and contemporary eventfulness. The acknowledgement of human depravity in temporality demands a Christian inventio that can address the reality of complex and obscure signs with faith, hope, and charity. The delivery carries force from the heart, breaks through the barrier of literacy, and connects listeners together in an empathetic way. Throughout the whole process of sermonic preparation and proclamation, the interplay between the skills of biblical interpretation and the practices of orality presents the picture of a literate, textual message first taken in and then spoken out orally by the preacher. v DEDICATION To the loving Trinity who is to be enjoyed solely. vi ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Calvin L. Research Question How might Ciceronian rhetoric, in light of Augustine’s insights regarding hermeneutics and homiletics as well as Walter Ong’s contributions concerning orality and literacy, strengthen contemporary homiletic praxis? Christian preaching has been a central concern to the practitioners of biblically confessional and creedal communities in worship, evangelization, and discipleship. Yet modern preachers are impotent to undertake this service due to ignorance of orality caused, to a great degree, by the contemporary media environment, as T. David Gordon indicates (15, 58–59). The unduly audience-oriented tendency induced by the New Homiletic, meanwhile, has endangered the authority of biblical texts. Confronted with these challenges, thus, this project attempts to propose a kind of oral homiletic that both reflects biblical authenticity and engages audience’s attentiveness. Cicero’s rhetorical theory has been mined by Christian orators since Augustine distributed On Christian Doctrine, and it arguably still sheds light on the composition of sound, logical, and effective messages. Ciceronian rhetoric, particularly the inseparability of matter and form, can assist preachers in the consideration of issue, argument, evidence, sermonic design, and attentiveness to audience, which can help them accomplish a steadfast resonance between biblical content and faithful listeners. Furthermore, Ong’s scholarship reminds us of the powerful and impressive oral ability people possessed before widespread literacy in human society. Thus, this project is suggesting a homiletic praxis from these elements: the restoration of Ciceronian rhetoric in homiletics through 1 both the implications of Augustine’s insights on hermeneutic and homiletics and Ong’s insights on orality and literacy. 2. Literature Review Aiming at the Protestant evangelical preacher, pastor, and student, this project will work from an Augustinian perspective on hermeneutic and homiletics that unites with Ciceronian rhetoric and Ongian insights on orality and literacy to synthesize a guide for oral homiletic praxis today. At the same time, homiletic literatures from various Christian traditions will be consulted, considered with theological, hermeneutical, and homiletic discernment. The proceedings will review the current condition of homiletic scholarship; Ciceronian rhetoric and its relationship to Christian homiletics; and Ongian orality and literacy related to its potential to enhance homiletic praxis. The normal homiletic approach, influenced by Ciceronian rhetoric, has been to present a thesis. Ancient orators employed a formula or stasis to discover what can be said about a subject by inventing an argument or thesis. Orators determined whether

One of the salient characteristics of stories is that they invite the reader or listener to identify with a character or possibly with the train of events. Because of all these elements stories delight and entrance us. A successful story does not necessarily guarantee a successful narrative sermon. Prof. Janse van Rensburg has ventured to undertake a thorough study of the narrative as a homiletic form, bringing his highly refined theological and literary perceptions to bear on the task. This study was not undertaken in a vacuum; it was a scientific investigation undertaken in a congregation. People were able to report on their experiences as listeners. A narrative has to do with listening. The writer therefore gave thorough consideration to the listeners and their context. The book includes a clear account of how people listen. Prof. Janse van Rensburg accepted the challenge of expressing a fresh hermeneutic approach in homiletic terms. The writer succeeds admirably in throwing new light on the relationship between pastoral care and preaching.

He primarily concerned himself with foundational matters from a variety of disci- Cplines needed to prepare preachers for their task. The multiplicity of texts written in English since Mather can overwhelm a preacher's library. WorlciCat reports 8,189 English texts with the word "preaching" in the title. A keyword search for "preaching" more than doubles that number. The ratio remains relatively the same when doing a search for the word "homiletics," which locates 475 titles. These texts are often broadly categorized as belonging to two eras: namely, an Old and New Homiletic. The inductive approach of Fred Craddock (1978) marks the division between the two paradigms.

    ABSTRACT EXPLORING A MODEL FOR EQUIPPING COLOMBIAN PASTORS AND LAY LEADERS IN THE SKILL OF NARRATIVE PREACHING by Juan Carlos Mejía The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of a training experience consisting of a workshop, a follow-up meeting, and a focus group for fifteen pastors and lay leaders of three churches at the Christian Fellowship Church in Bogotá, Colombia. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the workshop in terms of the knowledge, attitude, and practice of participants’ narrative preaching, the project for this study used an Explanatory Mixed-method design. It used both qualitative and quantitative approaches where participants completed questionnaires before the workshop. Subsequently, with the help of a focus group, I tracked the knowledge and practice of narrative preaching for two weeks after preparing one sermon and again, two weeks later with the questionnaire and a focus group after preaching one narrative sermon. The main results of this research were that (1) these pastors and lay leaders defined narrative sermons as a way of preaching where a story is told based on biblical text; (2) most of the participants had never received formal training in narrative preaching before the research and did not think they were sufficiently prepared to preach in this way; (3) the participants expressed that the reasoning behind narrative preaching was to better keep the audience’s attention and to improve communication with the congregation; most of the participants believed that narrative sermons are very well received; (4) most of the obstacles to preaching narrative sermons were found in acquiring enough practice in creating and constructing them; and, (5) without exception, all of the participants want to include narrative sermons in their future preaching ministry.

Both sides of that tragic division in the church claimed, with some justification, to be Augustinian. That our two institutions—one Catholic, the other Protestant—can collaborate in this way a half- millenium on shows that God may be stitching back together what we sinners have pulled apart. This course will explore Augustine’s works which are informed by his cultural, philosophical, theological perspectives as they shape his understanding as a Pastor. A distinctive feature of his early work as bishop is the extent to which he identifies with the perspective and condition of “the sheep”. His Confessions, composed around 397 in his early years as bishop, clearly identifies with the struggles, challenges and questions on a journey towards faith and conversion as an adult. Looking back on his journey he marvels at how he has come to recognize the presence and the work of God throughout his infancy, childhood, adolescence and young adult. He discovers, in particular, how, unknown to himself at the time, God was using people around him and also texts he was reading in his public education. A little later after the sack of Rome in 410, some Christians asked him to address the criticism from traditional Romans that the Emperor Theodosius’ abolition of pagan rites, temples and festivals in the 390s made the city vulnerable to attack.

Part one of this book, and particularly chapter four, provides an overview of the history of hermeneutics and homiletics which both aided my understanding of the subject and exposed a significant gap in my knowledge. Specifically, Johnson helped me to see how little I knew about the interpretation and proclamation of the Bible over the last twenty centuries, and how significant a bearing this history has on current issues and debates. Since my Doctor of Ministry concentration is preaching, I thought this gap unacceptable and thus requested an independent reading course which was eventually entitled, “Historical Survey of Hermeneutics and Homiletics.” I set two objectives for the course. First, I aimed to develop a broad and general understanding of the history of the relationship between hermeneutics and homiletics in the Christian church. I have fulfilled this aim by reading a little over five-thousand pages of secondary material, and by building a basic mental framework which now needs to be clarified, strengthened, and built out.

    After the Craddock Revolution: A Bibliographic Essay Tim Sensing Abilene Christian University Graduate School of Theology Cotton Mather’s Manuductio ad Ministerium, written in 1726, was the first book on preaching written by an American. He primarily concerned himself with foundational matters from a variety of disciplines needed to prepare preachers for their task. The multiplicity of texts written in English since Mather can overwhelm a preacher's library. WorldCat reports 8,189 English texts with the word “preaching” in the title. A keyword search for “preaching” more than doubles that number. The ratio remains relatively the same when doing a search for the word “homiletics” that locates 475 titles. These texts are often broadly categorized as belonging to two eras, namely, an Old and New Homiletic. The inductive approach of Fred Craddock (1971) marks the division between the two paradigms. Dwight Nelson surveys the most popular homiletic texts beginning with John Broadus, On the Preparation and Delivery of Sermons (1870) and concludes that the deductive method dominated homiletical theory pre-Craddock.1 Peter Ramus’ (1515-1572) restriction of rhetoric to style and delivery was perpetuated in Broadus’ classic text thus prolonging the separation of homiletics from biblical studies, theology, and liturgics. Although many texts were published between 1870 and 1978, Broadus’ text remained the most popular and few veered from his method.2 The New Homiletic critiques Broadus’ deductive style as inadequate, outdated, and passé. The following essay surveys the books that have been influential after the writings of Craddock while noting those authors with connections to the Restoration heritage.
