Mele May 2008 Dissertation Supervised by Ronald C. Arnett, PhD No. of Pages in Text: xi + 242 Is the Roman Catholic Church reticent towards preaching and if it is, why is this so? In an age when people often prefer to hear the Word preached to personal likings and individualistic needs, why would an ecclesial institution, such as the Catholic Church, hesitate to embrace this popular trend? This dissertation places the ethos of Roman Catholic homiletics in dialogue with the writings of Pope Benedict XVI in light of his desire to ―reform the reforms‖ made after the Second Vatican Council. The works of Simone Weil, a Jewish philosopher and mystic, are introduced into the conversation conducted at the threshold between cosmopolitanism and provincialism where contemporary Catholic preaching must take place if it is to be heard effectively today. First is an overview of contemporary homiletics and a brief history of preaching‘s relationship with rhetoric. Sacred rhetoric is examined from a historical perspective as a propaedeutic to Pope Benedict‘s writings that are reminiscent of Christian classical works. Pope Benedict‘s works identifying the problem of homiletic technique in an age that tolerates no revealed, eternal, and commanding truths are analyzed. iv Next, corollaries are presented between Pope Benedict XVI as a churchman and ―insider‖ of the Church and Simone Weil, a devotee but an ―outsider‖ of the Church, with both pointing to the threshold where the Catholic preacher must engage the conflicts of the secular and mundane. Standing at this threshold, Catholic preaching can turn from the Word towards the end or aim of all biblical proclamation, the Eucharist. This work answers why the in-breaking of Word of God relies upon fidelity to the traditional elements of liturgical preaching. The Church as a pre-modern institution makes a profound contribution by standing neither on the side of cosmopolitanism nor provincialism but preaching in the threshold between. In conclusion, the Church is reticent towards preaching, assuring that the Gospel message remains grounded in the Gospel and not solely upon the creativity or individualism of the homilist in any given age. This threshold at which the Word is preached within a wider liturgical context advances a homiletical turn within a pedagogy for homiletics. v DEDICATION I dedicate this dissertation in loving memory to my parents Joseph (Jack) and Rose Mele and my Aunt Isabel Bonacci who were the first to teach me the Word of God and witnessed by their lives how to put it into practice. vi ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I want to thank God for surrounding me with the people who helped make this dissertation possible. As I state in this dissertation, Pope Benedict chose his name with the hope that he can do for the Church today what Benedict of Nursia and the Benedictine monks did for vii the world in transition in their moment of time. My hope is to be accepted into the Oblates of Saint Benedict someday if they find me worthy of such an honor.     The Significance of Lesslie Newbigin for Mission in the New Millennium Michael W. Goheen A Remarkable Life Bishop Lesslie Newbigin is one of the most important missiological and theological thinkers of the twentieth century. The American church historian Geoffrey Wainwright, from Duke University, once remarked that when the history of the church in the twentieth century comes to be written, if the church historians know their job, Newbigin will have to be considered one of top ten or twelve theological figures of the century. In his book, he honours Newbigin’s significant contribution by portraying him in patristic terms as a “father of the church.”1 Newbigin was first and foremost a missionary; he spent forty years of his life in India. But he was much more: he was a theologian, biblical scholar, apologist, ecumenical leader, author, and missiologist. The breadth and depth of his experience and his contribution to the ecumenical and missionary history of the church in the twentieth century have been “scarcely paralleled.”2 Newbigin was born in England in 1909. He was converted to Jesus Christ during his university days at Cambridge. He was married, ordained in the Church of Scotland, and set sail for India as a missionary in 1936. He spent the next eleven years as a district missionary in Kanchipuram. He played an important role in clearing a theological impasse that led to the formation of the Church of South India (CSI)—a church made up of Congregationalists, Anglicans, Presbyterians, and Methodists. He served as bishop of Madurai for the next twelve years.

It begins with a brief historical account of sin and penance in Christian history, indicating the long tradition of performing penitential acts in response to the identification of one’s self as a sinner. The dissertation then considers the Thomistic account of sin and the response of penance, which is understood both as a sacrament (which destroys the sin) and as a virtue (the acts of which constitute the matter of the sacrament but also extend to include non-sacramental acts). This serves to provide a framework for understanding the way Catholics in the United States identified sin and sought to amend for it by use of the sacrament of penance as well as non-sacramental penitential acts of the virtue of penance.

Four communicative disjunctions are ways in which, “the Catholic Church today is … out of phase with the world it wants to speak to.”1 Unless and until the influence of Pope Francis permeates the Church at all levels and in all contexts his charismatic leadership cannot be said to have changed this condition altogether. He surely has set a direction away from the clerical culture among bishops that abetted sweeping clergy abuse of minors under a rug of silent re-assignments. Even the Church now represented in the deeds and words of Francis cannot by-pass coming to grips with the disjunctions and with abuse. So George McLean’s theological response to the disjunctions and crisis of abuse remains a valid, long-term project. He advises nothing less than, “… rethinking the entire nature of the Church and its public presence in quite different, indeed kenotic, terms.” 2 That is a tall theological order. 3 What does a theological project of that scope involve? And according to Lesslie Newbigin, it was an ecclesiology that had been tragically lost needing to be rediscovered in today’s global city. The truth is… that the unity of the Church is something given to it at its inception, and given by its Lord. That unity had its outward form, first in the fact that the first disciples were visibly grouped around one Lord, and then in the close-knit fellowship of the days immediately following Pentecost, in the sharing in a common baptism, a common tradition of teaching, a common Supper, and a common acknowledgment of the leadership of the Apostles.1 And does anyone doubt for a moment that if today’s global Christian ecclesia looked more like Acts 2, then large numbers of people in every place and culture would know that Jesus is real and that Christianity is true? that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.

    On Being an Apostolic Church Endorsed by the ASC in July, 2010 1. The Basis of Union affirms, “The Uniting Church in Australia lives and works within the faith and unity of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church” (BU par 2). It seeks to be an apostolic church by being true to the apostolic tradition and in relationship with other churches that are also seeking to do so. When the Uniting Church makes public statements it does so as a church that is endeavouring to be faithful to the way of Jesus Christ its Lord and Christian tradition in the context of contemporary Australia. Belief, behaviour, relationships with other churches 2. Being an apostolic church involves beliefs, behaviour and connections with other parts of the Church. Right belief is important as it bears on the faithful way of discipleship and ecumenical relationships. Within the broad framework of orthodox conviction, the Uniting Church embraces diversity of theological expression. Elsewhere the Doctrine working group has pointed out that there are three kinds of theological statements with differing authority: dogma, doctrine and theological reflection.1 Some doctrinal beliefs are foundational and while they can be explored are not to be rejected. Other aspects of theology can tolerate very different positions or be issues that are still in the process of theological reflection and discussion. 3. There are nevertheless limits to diversity of belief within the Uniting Church once people make the basic confession “Jesus is Lord”, a confession that is guided by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3).
