Christians are witnessing the advent of an emerging ecumenical paradigm, which, because it is not fully realized, is still realizing its full definition. The paradigm operates in a global context rather than a Eurocentric one, and even as it is more global, it is simultaneously more local. It cultivates shared praxis while being less concerned with the comparison of dogmas. Ecclesiology is also entering a new paradigm which shares many features with its ecumenical counterpart, particularly its global perspective and interest in shared praxis ahead of dogmatic questions. Even though ecumenism and ecclesiology share common trajectories, their journeys are unfolding in largely parallel rather than cooperative and mutually-enriching ways. This raises the question: What opportunities might arise from examining the shifts in ecumenism and ecclesiology together? This article examines how new methodological and practical developments in these two fields can form and inform one another. It studies the shift to synodality in the Catholic Church and the turn towards discernment in the ecumenical sphere as manifestations of similar theological commitments and a common interest in cultivating participatory processes. The seismic changes reshaping the religious landscape are transforming the relationship between ecumenism and ecclesiology; yet a strong connection between them endures and illumines paths forward for the church in the third millennium. -

Continuity and Development in Roman Catholic Ecclesiology* Susan K. Wood Department of Theology, Marquette University Milwaukee, WI Abstract An overview of the conceptualizations of the Catholic Church from the theology of Bellarmine to contemporary understanding of the church as communion shows both continuity and development from one concept to the next rather than an abrupt change to a new model that discards the model preceding it. This essay examines the church as perfect society, church as mystical body, church as sacrament, church as people of God, and church as communion, demonstrating that the various conceptualizations represent development, balance, correction, and a deeper penetration in the understanding and articulation of the prior conceptualizations. The church as body of Christ develops the spiritual and Christological dimension of the church as society. The church as sacrament offers a way of differentiating between Christ and the church while at the same time retaining the close correlation between the two. The church as people of God introduces historical consciousness into the definition of the church. The church as communion synthesizes the strong sacramental and spiritual identity of the church with its organizational structure. -

DUNCAN NOVEMBER 2012 © University of Pretoria ii Summary This study aims to establish what Augustine’s ecclesiology was between 354-387AD and how his ecclesial thoughts developed during that period. Scholarship has tended to neglect the importance of this period in understanding Augustine’s ecclesiology as a coherent whole (Alexander 2008:21). Like Harrison (2007: 165-179) and Alexander (2008:18-21), this study establishes that Augustine’s early ecclesiology and its development is an essential lens to understanding Augustine’s later ecclesiology. The thesis statement, which yielded a positive result, is the defining features of Augustine’s ecclesiology were in place by 387AD. A chronological textual approach was used to establish whether the thesis was positive or negative. Primary and secondary sources were used where appropriate to determine Augustine’s ecclesiology. This study established the different phases of Augustine’s ecclesial growth, what the contents of his ecclesiology most likely was during these different phases, how his early ecclesial thoughts influenced his future ecclesial thoughts and what lessons can be learnt for the South African church context. iii Key Terms Catechumen- One who has submitted himself/herself to the process of Catholic instruction though not yet baptized. Christian- One who believes that only through Christ’s sacrifice is one saved from the consequences of sin and death. -

religions Article Believing in the Church: Why Ecumenism Needs the Invisibility of the Church Bradford Littlejohn Political Theory, Patrick Henry College, Purcellville, VA 20132, USA; [email protected] Received: 30 November 2018; Accepted: 5 February 2019; Published: 12 February 2019 Abstract: Amidst the plethora of approaches to ecumenical dialogue and church reunion over the last century, a common theme has been the depreciation of the classic Protestant distinction between the “visible” and “invisible” church. Often seen as privileging an abstract predestinarianism over the concrete lives and structures of church communities and underwriting a complacency about division that deprives Christians of any motive to ecumenical endeavor, the concept of the “invisible” church has been widely marginalized in favor of a renewed focus on the “visible” church as the true church. However, I argue that this stress on visible unity creates a pressure toward institutional forms of unity that ultimately privilege Roman Catholic ecclesiologies at the expense of Protestant ones, and thus fails of its ecumenical promise. Renewed attention to Reformational understandings of the relationship between divine grace and human action and the centrality and uniqueness of Christ as the foundation of the church, I argue, dispels some misunderstandings of the church’s “invisibility” and demonstrates the indispensability of the concept. I argue that this Reformational framework, which refuses to accept the empirical divisions of the Church as definitive and summons us to an ecumenism that belongs to the church’s sanctification, provides the best theological ground for ecumenical endeavor. IS THERE A CATHOLIC ECCLESIOLOGY? The remark is nearly commonplace that ecclesiology as a distinct theological tractate or discipline developed relatively late, toward the end of the Middle Ages. Of course there had been a great deal of reflection on the Church long before that period. St. Paul's Letter to the Colossians would not make sense if Paul had no ecclesiology. St. Augustine's De Gvitate Dei showed a profound concern about the Church and its relation to the Empire and the world. All patristic liturgies express the sense of responsibility felt by the Christians toward the community of the faithful, both in its local embodiment and in its universal dimension. The Church of the Fathers was not a nude fact, as though the Fathers lived the faith in the community without realizing the meaning of the community in the faith. Louis Bouyer is undoubted- ly right in his book, L'Eglise de Dieu,1 to present the Church of the Fathers in strict continuity with that of the New Testament. Yet whatever major elements for a developed ecclesiology one finds among the Fathers, it remains that until the eve of the Reforma- tion the Church was never looked at in directo, but was always seen in obliquo. In a more modern language, the Church was connoted but not denoted by the kerygma, by its formulation in the regula fidei, by the normative decisions of the great councils, and by the expository and systematic reflections on the Christian experience which abounded in patristic and medieval literature. The first tractates De ecclesia grew out of the conflicts of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. -

Entitled Liturgiam authenticam, “On the Use of Vernacular Languages in the Publication of the Books of the Roman Liturgy,” it pre- scribes the use of the Latin Vulgate as an “auxiliary tool” in the textual production of Scriptural translations for the vernacular liturgical books (no. 24). With regard to the vernacular lectionary in particular, it adds that “[i]f the biblical translation from which the Lectionary is composed exhib- its readings that differ from those set forth in the Latin liturgical text, it should be borne in mind that the Nova Vulgata Editio is the point of refer- ence as regards the delineation of the canonical text. Thus, in the transla- tion of the deuterocanonical books and wherever else there may exist var- ying manuscript traditions, the liturgical translation must be prepared in accordance with the same manuscript tradition that the Nova Vulgata has followed” (no. 37).1 This post-conciliar policy of Biblical translation soon became a matter of controversy. In a letter to the US Conference of Catholic Bishops dated August 13, 2001, the Executive Board of the Catholic Biblical Association of America aired its criticism against the curial document: Our main concerns have to do with the presentation of the Nova Vulgata as the model for Scripture translations in various ways and the provisions that translations conform to it, even to the point of requiring conformity to the Nova Vulgata in the tradition of original language manuscripts used for translation. -

A Complex Legacy Louis Bouyer and the Metaphysics of the Reformation Silvianne Aspray, Pembroke College, University of Cambridge Abstract Based on a discussion of Louis Bouyer’s thesis about the metaphysics of the Reformation in The Spirit and Forms of Protestantism, this essay considers the methodological and hermeneutical issues involved in enquiring into the metaphysical commitments of Reformation theology. A case study of the theology of the Reformer Peter Maryr Vermi- gli is employed for the argument that Reformation metaphysics was a hybrid of elements pertaining both to a nominalist and a participatory ontology. This argument is then taken further by a reflection on the history of reception of the metaphysical complexity which is at the heart of the Reformation legacy. Total word count: 11’250 words In the wake of the 500-year anniversary of the Reformation, many call for a new return ad fontes reformationis, heralding a Protestant ressourcement. Louis Bouyer, writing in 1954, challenged the possibility of any such return.1 The “irreducible complexity” of the theological principles of sixteenth-century Protestantism, he contended, would inadvertently backfire on those wishing to retrieve them.
