Kenotic Ecclesiology: Context, Orientations, Secularity THOMAS HUGHSON, S.J. Four communicative disjunctions are ways in which, “the Catholic Church today is … out of phase with the world it wants to speak to.”1 Unless and until the influence of Pope Francis permeates the Church at all levels and in all contexts his charismatic leadership cannot be said to have changed this condition altogether. He surely has set a direction away from the clerical culture among bishops that abetted sweeping clergy abuse of minors under a rug of silent re-assignments. Even the Church now represented in the deeds and words of Francis cannot by-pass coming to grips with the disjunctions and with abuse. So George McLean’s theological response to the disjunctions and crisis of abuse remains a valid, long-term project. He advises nothing less than, “… rethinking the entire nature of the Church and its public presence in quite different, indeed kenotic, terms.” 2 That is a tall theological order. 3 What does a theological project of that scope involve? Outlining some directions along which to think about a kenotic theology of the Church draws on more than theological reflection and research.

    IS THERE A CATHOLIC ECCLESIOLOGY? The remark is nearly commonplace that ecclesiology as a distinct theological tractate or discipline developed relatively late, toward the end of the Middle Ages. Of course there had been a great deal of reflection on the Church long before that period. St. Paul's Letter to the Colossians would not make sense if Paul had no ecclesiology. St. Augustine's De Gvitate Dei showed a profound concern about the Church and its relation to the Empire and the world. All patristic liturgies express the sense of responsibility felt by the Christians toward the community of the faithful, both in its local embodiment and in its universal dimension. The Church of the Fathers was not a nude fact, as though the Fathers lived the faith in the community without realizing the meaning of the community in the faith. Louis Bouyer is undoubted- ly right in his book, L'Eglise de Dieu,1 to present the Church of the Fathers in strict continuity with that of the New Testament. Yet whatever major elements for a developed ecclesiology one finds among the Fathers, it remains that until the eve of the Reforma- tion the Church was never looked at in directo, but was always seen in obliquo. In a more modern language, the Church was connoted but not denoted by the kerygma, by its formulation in the regula fidei, by the normative decisions of the great councils, and by the expository and systematic reflections on the Christian experience which abounded in patristic and medieval literature. The first tractates De ecclesia grew out of the conflicts of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

    A Complex Legacy Louis Bouyer and the Metaphysics of the Reformation Silvianne Aspray, Pembroke College, University of Cambridge Abstract Based on a discussion of Louis Bouyer’s thesis about the metaphysics of the Reformation in The Spirit and Forms of Protestantism, this essay considers the methodological and hermeneutical issues involved in enquiring into the metaphysical commitments of Reformation theology. A case study of the theology of the Reformer Peter Maryr Vermi- gli is employed for the argument that Reformation metaphysics was a hybrid of elements pertaining both to a nominalist and a participatory ontology. This argument is then taken further by a reflection on the history of reception of the metaphysical complexity which is at the heart of the Reformation legacy. Total word count: 11’250 words In the wake of the 500-year anniversary of the Reformation, many call for a new return ad fontes reformationis, heralding a Protestant ressourcement. Louis Bouyer, writing in 1954, challenged the possibility of any such return.1 The “irreducible complexity” of the theological principles of sixteenth-century Protestantism, he contended, would inadvertently backfire on those wishing to retrieve them. Dr. Eugene Duffy Abstract The Presence of Christ in the Eucharist: A Strange Neglect of the Resurrection? Eminent theologians, Gerald O’Collins, Anthony J. Kelly and Luis M. Bermejo claim that a strange neglect of Jesus’ resurrection persists in contemporary theologies of the Eucharist. All three suggest that this deficiency emerges from, and is most evident in, theologies of the Eucharist which are shaped by the insights of classical Christology. This thesis will demonstrate that the narrowness and rigidity of such Christology with regard to the Eucharist, finds its clearest expression in the neo-scholastic manualist tradition. To show how traditional theologians failed to engage with Jesus’ resurrection Joseph Pohle’s dogmatic treatise on the Eucharist first published in 1917, is presented herein. However, while such traditional discourse on the Eucharist prevailed in the seminaries in the early twentieth century, a clear shift soon began to emerge, whereby sacramental theologians on mainland Europe broke away from the narrow approach of neo-scholastic reflection by rediscovering the centrality of the Paschal Mystery to theologies of the Eucharist. This thesis suggests that the break with the neo-scholastic manualist tradition and its treatment of the Eucharist, finds its origins in the writings of the Benedictine liturgist, Dom Odo Casel, whose treatise on the mystery of Christian Worship was published in 1932.

It is a great honour for the country and a joy, especially for Catholics. Benedict XVI knows France well and has strong links with our country. The Pope is coming for an apostolic visit. As Pastor of the universal Church, he is coming to support the Church of France and the faith of Catholics. He is coming to meet all the French, all those who will come to listen to him and pray with him. He is coming to give thanks to God for Lourdes as a place of blessings for 150 years. In Lourdes , Pope Benedict XVI pilgrimage will be notably different from Pope John Paul II’s two previous pilgrimages; which themselves were quite different. The 2008 pilgrimage is part of a whole jubilee year, and will be its summit. The Pope will perform the jubilee acts that are proposed to all and consist in following the Way of the Jubilee, as the French bishops did during their spring meeting. The Pope’s pilgrimage will be placed under the sign of the Cross, since we will be celebrating the Glorious Cross on Sunday, September 15 and Our Lady of Sorrows on Monday 15. The Sunday celebration will be more particularly open to young people, to whom John Paul II transmitted already a long time ago the Cross that is travelling all around the world from one World Youth Day to the next.

That essay’s title, “Is It Basket Weaving? The Question of Christianity and Human Values,” refers to an early monastic practice of weaving baskets one day, only to undo them the next. The weaving was merely a concession to human weakness, a way to keep occupied when unable to contemplate heavenly things; such work had no intrinsic worth or purpose: “Only the making of a soul was the true human value. For some reason, I kept putting the emphasis on the agency of the students while cloaking the agency of God in vague theological language about grace and “his help.” +en one day, a parishioner came to me to ask for prayers as she was about to begin a retreat. I assured her I would pray for her, and we even did so before she le/ my o4ce. A/er the retreat, she sought me out to ask a moral question that arose in her conscience during her retreat: “Do I have to reverse my tubal ligation?” Now, this was not a retreat on theology of the body or any aspect of sexual ethics or marriage. It was simply a retreat on how to pray. I am concerned enough about the income and 5nancial stability of my fellow moral theologians that I will not advocate the demise of our discipline; but certainly, I began to think, the mystical must precede the moral, as Henri de Lubac urged. 2 +e approach I took to moral theology o/en elicited defensive postures on the part of students. +is disposition le/ little room for them to receive the beauty of virtuous living as a motivating power to enter the good.
