Morry P/SSX 31753) Including an eyewitness account of the sinking of the German battleship “Bismarck”. Newfoundland’s Military Legacy Newfoundland participated in both World Wars. Even though the province is small, it produced a famous Regiment of Infantry that fought in Gallipolis and from there to France. They lost quite a few men in Turkey and were decimated twice in France, once in Beaumont Hamel and again at Arras and other areas on the Somme. Total casualties (fatal) were 1305, and at sea 179 lost their lives. Of those that returned, many died of wounds, stress, and worn out hearts. They were given the title “Royal” for their role in the defence of Masnieres (the Battle for Cambrai) by King George VI, the reigning Monarch of the time. World War II is practically dead history, especially since some anti-Royals disbanded the regiment in 2002, as it's territorial section, according to the present army regime in HQ Ottawa, did not measure up!! During WWII the British changed the regiment over to Artillery so they became known as The Royal Newfoundland Light Artillery to lessen the chances of heavy losses. -

Tracing of old settlements and place names in a Sea Sámi region1 Marit B. Henriksen Sámi University College, Norway [email protected] Introduction The basis for this article is my work with an old land surveying document from Finnmark, in the north of Norway. The document is named Finnmarken Sorenskriveri Landmaalerprotokol, which in English would be The Landsurveying protocol of the County of Finnmark. The main objective for this presentation is to introduce some preliminary results of my work with the protocol and I will present parts of the process, as well as maps, figures and photos showing how the process turns out. About the region Finnmark is the northernmost county of Norway. Finnmark was the last area that became part of the Norwegian territory. The border between the Norwegian and Swedish area was drawn in 1751 and the border between the Norwegian and Russian area was drawn in 1826. Before the closing of the borders, several nation states were interested in this area, that is for taxation purposes. Because of this, the (mainly Sámi) population of the area had to pay taxes to at least three different nation states in periods (Denmark/Norway, Sweden and Russia). Norway was a dependency (satellite state) of Denmark from 1537 to 1814. From 1814, Norway was in union with Sweden, until Norway was declared an independent nation state in 1905. About the Sámi people and the Sámi languages The Sámi area covers parts of four different nation states, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. There are ten different Sámi languages: South Sámi, Ume Sámi, Pite Sámi, Lule Sámi, North Sámi, Inari Sámi, Skolt Sámi, Akkala Sámi, Kildin Sámi and Ter Sámi. -

VICTORIOUS, 1965-67 3 Foreword Throughout her long and vigorous life Victorious has had an enviable reputation as a happy, efficient and hard-hitting carrier. The commission of 1966-67 has matched and added to this record. The quality of the commission had already been established by September, 1966 when I relieved Captain Davenport and it was my good fortune to take command of a smoothly running fighting ship manned by a cheerfully capable Ship's Company. This condition can only be achieved and sustained by hard work, consideration for others, a degree of self-denial - and indeed sacrifice - and a pride in the task and the `Ship' and Aircraft we have been given to perform it. These qualities have been present throughout and have been shown with such willing cheerfulness that this splendid command has been for me not only a great privilege but also a pleasure. During the commission Victorious has steamed nearly 100,000 miles and our aircraft have flown well over a million miles. Mixed with hard work have been some fine sporting performances and some memorable visits, in particular to my own country Australia. These pages contain a record of some of the personalities and some of our activities on board, in the air and ashore. They can be only a small part of the whole but I hope that in the years to come they will serve as reminders of this commission and will help you to recall your own memories of friends and incidents in a satisfying and rewarding commission. Account of Purley on Thames Gallantry should never be forgotten The Purley Connection While John Chapman was taking Mrs Eileen Goddard from St Mary’s Avenue to the Royal Berks Hospital on a Volunteer Centre trip, she happened to mention that her husband was one of the crew of X6 – one of the three midget submarines sent to try to cripple the Tirpitz in 1943. He had no idea that we had a Purley connection with an event like this and thought a few more people would like to know about it. A second connection emerged in that John had been in contact with Vernon Coles DSM over the war in the Pacific when he was Chairman of West Berkshire Council. Vernon was born in Tilehurst and was a close friend of Edmund Goddard with whom he had served on X-craft. The Tirpitz The Tirpitz was one of the most powerful battleships ever built. Her role was to attack convoys bringing much needed supplies from America to Britain and Russia. At 41000 tons she outgun- Edmund Goddard [M030508] ned any Royal Navy ship and if allowed to roam the Atlantic she would be a terrible danger to our ships, far more of a menace than any submarine. Churchill christened her ‘The Beast’ and put the country’s best minds to work to see how they could counter the menace. She was commissioned in February 1941, the last and most powerful of the Bismark Class and was sent to Trondheim in Norway in January 1942 to prevent an allied invasion of Norway and to attack the Russian convoys. -

CANADA AVIATION MUSEUM AIRCRAFT AIRCRAFT CARRIERS ROYAL CANADIAN NAVY (RCN) Prepared by Commander E.J. L’Heureux CD, RCN (Ret’d) Introduction Naval Aviation had its start only eight years after the Wright Brothers first flew their “Flyer” at Kill Devil Hill, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA, in 1903 and less than two years after J.A.D. McCurdy made the first airplane flight at Baddeck, on Bras D’Or Lake, Nova Scotia. It was in 1911 that Eugene Ely, an exhibition pilot, flew a Curtiss off the deck of the United States Ship (USS) BIRMINGHAM at anchor in Hampton Roads, Virginia, and flew it to Norfolk. Two months later he flew from Camp Selfridge to a 120 foot wooden deck fitted on the USS PENNSYLVANIA anchored in San Francisco Bay, proving the feasibility of the aircraft carrier. It would not be many years before the fledgling country of Canada was to participate in carrier based aviation, initially through the pilots who flew with the Royal Navy (RN) and latterly through the acquisition of aircraft carriers themselves. This story is a synopsis of that participation. Aircraft Carrier Development In the formative era of aircraft carrier development navies were tied to the concept that the bigger the ship and the larger the guns the more capable the navy. The bireme and trireme, referring to the numbers and layers of oars used in Greek and Roman galleons, gave way to the wooden hulls and big guns of later ships used in the Napoleonic Wars, and the battles of the Nile and Trafalgar. -

Our. Knowledge of the Geology of the Alta District of West Finnmark Owes Much to the Work of Holtedahl (1918, 1960) and Føyn (1964)

Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 54, pp. 123-129. Oslo 1974. An outline of the geology of the area between Alta and the Komagfjord tectonic window is presented. Lithologies (including a tillite) constituting an autochthonous sequence are described from an area on the north-east side of Altafjord, and from their similarity to those of formations occurring in adjacent areas a revised regional stratigraphical correlation is proposed. An occurrence of biogenic structures appears to provide confirmatory evidence for an earlier suggested correlation with Late Precambrian sequences be tween west and east Finnmark. D. Roberts & E. Regional setting; previous correlations Our. knowledge of the geology of the Alta district of west Finnmark owes much to the work of Holtedahl (1918, 1960) and Føyn (1964). The oldest rocks, the Raipas Group or Series (Reitan 1963a) of Precambrian (Karelian) age, are represented by a sequence of greenschist facies metasediments, metavolcanics and intrusives. Lying unconformably upon the Raipas is a quartzite formation, a thin tillite, and a mixed shale and sandstone succession. Holtedahl (1918) re ferred to these autochthonous post-Raipas rocks as the 'Bossekopavdelingen', but Føyn (1964) later demonstrated the presence of an angular uncon formity beneath the tillite and adopted this break as the border between what he termed the Bossekop Group and the overlying sediments, the Borras Group. These were later referred to as sub-groups (Føyn 1967, Pl.
