Morry P/SSX 31753) Including an eyewitness account of the sinking of the German battleship “Bismarck”. Newfoundland’s Military Legacy Newfoundland participated in both World Wars. Even though the province is small, it produced a famous Regiment of Infantry that fought in Gallipolis and from there to France. They lost quite a few men in Turkey and were decimated twice in France, once in Beaumont Hamel and again at Arras and other areas on the Somme. Total casualties (fatal) were 1305, and at sea 179 lost their lives. Of those that returned, many died of wounds, stress, and worn out hearts. They were given the title “Royal” for their role in the defence of Masnieres (the Battle for Cambrai) by King George VI, the reigning Monarch of the time. World War II is practically dead history, especially since some anti-Royals disbanded the regiment in 2002, as it's territorial section, according to the present army regime in HQ Ottawa, did not measure up!! During WWII the British changed the regiment over to Artillery so they became known as The Royal Newfoundland Light Artillery to lessen the chances of heavy losses. -

NAVAL SITUATION. General Review. The Mediterranean Fleet continues to be engaged in the Cretan operations. The German battleship Bismarck has been sunk in the Atlantic. Shipping losses have been light. Home Waters and North Atlantic. 2. Following reports received from air reconnaissance, the German battle ship Bismarck and cruiser Prinz Eugen were sighted by H.M. Ships Norfolk and Suffolk late on the 23rd May in -the Denmark Strait. They were shadowed until early on the 24th, when they were engaged by H.M. Ships Hood and Prince of Wales. H.M.S. Hood was hit and blew up, and the chase continued throughout the 24th. Torpedo aircraft from H.M.S. Victorious obtained one hit on Bismarck at 1220, but touch was then lost until 1030 on the 26th, when she was again sighted by a Catalina aircraft, and later by H.M.S. -

Captain's Foreword by Captain P. M. Compston ROYAL NAVY The Editor has kindly invited me to write the foreword to this Book o f the Commission. Normally such remarks are recorded when the ship is on her way home and we are looking forward to a warm welcome from our families and friends on arrival at our Home Port. However, as far as VICTORIOUS is concerned, events have dictated otherwise, and we shall shortly be flying back according to the timing of our reliefs arrival at Singapore. It is a great disappointment to me, and I am certain to many of you that it has to be this way. It is also a great pity that this should happen when VICTORIOUS can be considered, in every sense of the word, a fully operational strike carrier. That she has reached this stage is almost entirely due to your efforts and hard work, and your determination to overcome the handicaps with The ship has a very good name in the Middle and Far East Stations, both at sea and in harbour, and in spite of the operational requirements I am glad that we have been allowed to enjoy some interesting visits, during all of which you have been a credit to the Service and your Country. Tokarev hroughout history, despite the influence of Alfred Thayer Mahan’s concepts, continental European and Asian navies have had a simple choice to make: Teither to create a balanced fleet to engage another balanced fleet at sea and defeat it in one or more “decisive battles” or to take an “asymmetrical approach,” creat- ing an “unbalanced” navy, able to prevent the enemy from achieving sea control and to keep one’s own vital sea lines of communication (SLOCs), if one has any, untouched by the enemy’s naval forces. In the case of Russia, the era of a blue-water, balanced navy ended with defeat in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905. Russia did not lose the capability to build capital ships, nor did the context for their employment evaporate. -

Royal Canadian Navy Aircraft Carrier Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Bonaventure – CVL 22 21 January 1957 – 3 July 1970 Introduction In April 1962, the Canadian Government approved the acquisition of an aircraft carrier to replace Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Magnificent (CVL 21), which had been on loan and was to be returned to the Royal Navy (RN). At the same time, a decision was taken to purchase and modernize an unfinished Second World War era aircraft carrier. The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) set up a negotiating team to deal with the British Government and the Royal Navy. The RN argued that the contract to purchase the new carrier required that HMCS Magnificent be brought up to the latest “alterations and additions” (A&As) for her class before her return to the RN. These alterations were to include, among other modifications, an angled and strengthened deck. The RCN’s case was that these were modernizations and not A&As. Furthermore, the carrier being offered for purchase was being bought “as is”, therefore the RN must accept the return of HMCS Magnificent in an “as is” state. The Royal Navy was won over to the Canadian’s point of view and the negotiations were soon completed. A new project office for the Principal Royal Canadian Navy Technical Representative was established at Belfast, Northern Ireland, where the partially completed Majestic class, Light Fleet aircraft carrier, the ex-Her Majesty’s Ship (HMS) Powerful (R 95) was laying. Specifications With a length overall of 215 meters (705 ft) and a beam at the water line of 24 meters (79 ft), HMS Powerful was only slightly larger than HMCS Magnificent. -

FIGHTER-DIRECTION MATERIEL AND TECHNIQUE, 1939-45 R S WOOLRICH INTRODUCTION The concept of the control and direction of Naval fighter aircraft from their parent carrier had not been conceived prior to 1935. Rear Admiral Torlesse, then a member of the Naval Air Division, has attributed the lack of a suitable ship-to-air R/T link as a primary reason for the deficiency in the immediate pre-war years. Experience with ship borne WA radar early in the war was soon to lead to the provision of rudimentary FD facilities in carriers. Pre-war responsibility for both maritime communications and radar was that of the Signal Division I the Admiralty. The fact that no adequate provision had been made for ship-to-air R/T communications reflected a general lack of interest in Naval fighter operations, which extended to a lack of liaison with Fighter Command of the RAF. In fairness to the Admiralty departments concerned it should, however, be pointed out that the Fleet possessed greater concentration of AA guns than could be found at most shore targets, as a result of recent modernisations. The alternative techniques available to Naval fighter aircraft in the immediate pre-war period were as follows: - To fly a ‘square search’ centred on the carrier, accepting that there was a 50% probability of the fighters being on the wrong side of the Fleet when the Bombers appeared; - To intercept from overhead, operating as a combat air patrol (CAP) – but probably resulting in being too late to effect an interception, quite apart from interfering with the AA gunfire; - To fly off from the parent carrier in the hope of intercepting a few straggler enemy aircraft on their return to base.
