Morry P/SSX 31753) Including an eyewitness account of the sinking of the German battleship “Bismarck”. Newfoundland’s Military Legacy Newfoundland participated in both World Wars. Even though the province is small, it produced a famous Regiment of Infantry that fought in Gallipolis and from there to France. They lost quite a few men in Turkey and were decimated twice in France, once in Beaumont Hamel and again at Arras and other areas on the Somme. Total casualties (fatal) were 1305, and at sea 179 lost their lives. Of those that returned, many died of wounds, stress, and worn out hearts. They were given the title “Royal” for their role in the defence of Masnieres (the Battle for Cambrai) by King George VI, the reigning Monarch of the time. World War II is practically dead history, especially since some anti-Royals disbanded the regiment in 2002, as it's territorial section, according to the present army regime in HQ Ottawa, did not measure up!! During WWII the British changed the regiment over to Artillery so they became known as The Royal Newfoundland Light Artillery to lessen the chances of heavy losses. -

During the first three decades of the twentieth century, Japanese society underwent significant changes in a short amount of time. After the intense modernizations of the late nineteenth century, the start of the twentieth century witnessed an increase in overseas militarism, turbulent domestic politics, an evolving middle class, and the expansion of roles for women to play outside the home. As such, the early decades of the twentieth century in Japan were a crucial period for the formation of modern ideas about femininity and womanhood. Before, during, and after the rule of her husband Emperor Taishō (1879-1926; r. 1912-1926), Empress Teimei held a highly public role, and was frequently seen in a variety of visual media. -

Paris, 6th June 2017 PRESS RELEASE First Flight of Russian Aircraft MC-21 Nexeya supplies avionics integration and simulation tools Russia United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) successfully completed the maiden flight of their new MC-21- 300 commercial aircraft at Irkutsk Aviation Plant airfield. Being a modern aircraft, the MC-21 operates with numerous state of the art computer-controlled systems supporting safety-critical flight functions. While this may have been the first time its complex avionics systems have been tested in flight, they have been successfully integrated and tested on the ground thanks to TechSAT’s Avionics Development System ADS2 platform solution. This ADS2 platform enabled UAC Integration Center to test and validate the full MC-21 avionic suits prior to the first flight. Holistic tests including complex operational scenarios were performed during every phases of the design and development of the program ensuring maximum safety and superior performance of the aircraft. Military applications emerged fairly early in the infancy of aviation, in the form of first trials to establish the superiority of the third dimension over the battlefield. Well- known examples include the balloon reconnaissance efforts made in France even before the birth of the aircraft, and it was not long before the first generation of flimsy, underpowered aircraft were being tested in a military environment. The Italians used aircraft for reconnaissance missions at Tripoli in 1910-1912, and the Americans made their first attempts at taking air power to sea as early as 1910-1911. -

Tactics are for Losers Military Education, The Decline of Rational Debate and the Failure of Strategic Thinking in the Imperial Japanese Navy: 1920-1941 A submission for the 2019 CN Essay Competition For Entry in the OPEN and DEFENCE Divisions The period of intense mechanisation and modernisation that affected all of the world’s navies during the latter half of the 19th and first half of the 20th century had possibly its greatest impact in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). Having been shocked into self- consciousness concerning their own vulnerability to modern firepower by the arrival of Commodore Matthew Perry’s ‘Black Fleet’ at Edo bay on 8 July 1853, the state of Japan launched itself onto a trajectory of rapid modernisation. Between 1863 and 1920, the Japanese state transformed itself from a forgotten backwater of the medieval world to one of the world’s great technological and industrialised powers. The spearhead of this meteoric rise from obscurity to great power status in just over a half-century was undoubtedly the Imperial Japanese Navy, which by 1923 was universally recognised during the Washington Naval Conference as the world’s third largest and most powerful maritime force.1 Yet, despite the giant technological leaps forward made by the Imperial Japanese Navy during this period, the story of Japan’s and the IJN’s rise to great power status ends in 1945 much as it began during the Perry expedition; with an impotent government being forced to bend to the will of the United States and her allies while a fleet of foreign warships rested at anchor in Tokyo Bay. -

VICTORIOUS, 1965-67 3 Foreword Throughout her long and vigorous life Victorious has had an enviable reputation as a happy, efficient and hard-hitting carrier. The commission of 1966-67 has matched and added to this record. The quality of the commission had already been established by September, 1966 when I relieved Captain Davenport and it was my good fortune to take command of a smoothly running fighting ship manned by a cheerfully capable Ship's Company. This condition can only be achieved and sustained by hard work, consideration for others, a degree of self-denial - and indeed sacrifice - and a pride in the task and the `Ship' and Aircraft we have been given to perform it. These qualities have been present throughout and have been shown with such willing cheerfulness that this splendid command has been for me not only a great privilege but also a pleasure. During the commission Victorious has steamed nearly 100,000 miles and our aircraft have flown well over a million miles. Mixed with hard work have been some fine sporting performances and some memorable visits, in particular to my own country Australia. These pages contain a record of some of the personalities and some of our activities on board, in the air and ashore. They can be only a small part of the whole but I hope that in the years to come they will serve as reminders of this commission and will help you to recall your own memories of friends and incidents in a satisfying and rewarding commission. It has been released for general congressional use with his permission. Russian Fighter Aircraft Industrial Base: Parallels with the United States? Summary There are many differences between the fighter aircraft industry in the United States and in Russia. The United States has traditionally produced its weaponry within a capitalist framework which allowed free enterprise and competition between companies in private industry. The former Soviet Union’s economy, and its fighter aircraft industry was based on a Marxist, command economy, where the central government dictated the type and number of aircraft produced and allocated resources for construction. Once among the most glamorous components of the Soviet military industrial complex, the Russian military aircraft industry has been described by some analysts as being on the verge of collapse. Russia’s civilian aircraft industry has faced similar pressures, which does not bode well for the military aviation infrastructure. It may be difficult for fighter aircraft companies to find employment in Russia’s beleaguered civil aircraft sector. The Russian government has attempted to reform its fighter aircraft industrial base and make it more efficient and competitive with western industry. It has initiated several reforms aimed at reducing the stratification and compartmentalization of industrial processes, as well as improving access to financial resources. -
