Morry P/SSX 31753) Including an eyewitness account of the sinking of the German battleship “Bismarck”. Newfoundland’s Military Legacy Newfoundland participated in both World Wars. Even though the province is small, it produced a famous Regiment of Infantry that fought in Gallipolis and from there to France. They lost quite a few men in Turkey and were decimated twice in France, once in Beaumont Hamel and again at Arras and other areas on the Somme. Total casualties (fatal) were 1305, and at sea 179 lost their lives. Of those that returned, many died of wounds, stress, and worn out hearts. They were given the title “Royal” for their role in the defence of Masnieres (the Battle for Cambrai) by King George VI, the reigning Monarch of the time. World War II is practically dead history, especially since some anti-Royals disbanded the regiment in 2002, as it's territorial section, according to the present army regime in HQ Ottawa, did not measure up!! During WWII the British changed the regiment over to Artillery so they became known as The Royal Newfoundland Light Artillery to lessen the chances of heavy losses. -

Introduction This is a book about HMS EAGLE for those who served in her, but many others will read it: wives, parents, sweethearts and friends. To those who do, may I suggest that you concentrate on reading between the lines. If you do this you will recognise at once the labour of love which the compilation of this book entailed. You will also recognise that here is the last saga of a Great Ship, prepared to fight if needed, prepared to aid anyone in distress, prepared to represent her country honourably on all occasions and in all parts of the world. In the many photographs you can meet the men of EAGLE, no less a band of brothers than the men of Nelson's ships. Between the lines in this book, with its frequent understatement, you will find an anatomy of the Royal Navy revealed in the character, courage, fortitude, humour and kindliness of EAGLE's officers and men. EDITOR'S NOTE - We regret that this souvenir book is in `paperback' form, but by sacrificing hard covers we have been able to include a lot more material than would otherwise have been possible with the money available. Should you wish for a copy bound in boards, then, it is quite easy to get this done by any bookbinder - it would not be very expensive. (For those of you in possession of the book of the first half of the commission, from 5 March 1969, the two could be bound together.) The author of the book of the first part of this last commission concluded by saying, `We'll be back'. -

VICTORIOUS, 1965-67 3 Foreword Throughout her long and vigorous life Victorious has had an enviable reputation as a happy, efficient and hard-hitting carrier. The commission of 1966-67 has matched and added to this record. The quality of the commission had already been established by September, 1966 when I relieved Captain Davenport and it was my good fortune to take command of a smoothly running fighting ship manned by a cheerfully capable Ship's Company. This condition can only be achieved and sustained by hard work, consideration for others, a degree of self-denial - and indeed sacrifice - and a pride in the task and the `Ship' and Aircraft we have been given to perform it. These qualities have been present throughout and have been shown with such willing cheerfulness that this splendid command has been for me not only a great privilege but also a pleasure. During the commission Victorious has steamed nearly 100,000 miles and our aircraft have flown well over a million miles. Mixed with hard work have been some fine sporting performances and some memorable visits, in particular to my own country Australia. These pages contain a record of some of the personalities and some of our activities on board, in the air and ashore. They can be only a small part of the whole but I hope that in the years to come they will serve as reminders of this commission and will help you to recall your own memories of friends and incidents in a satisfying and rewarding commission. However, the question of military strategic alternatives in this important era of British foreign policy has been less studied. -

It describes the passage of events after Portsmouth Dockyard had finished their splendid work, but it cannot attempt to give a chronicle of the individual effort, the endless hard work, which it was necessary for each man to contribute to the whole. As Captain I took a huge pride in commanding so splendid and so success- ful a vessel, but my pride was not in being in the limelight but in the knowledge that everyone on board was pulling his weight to make a really efficient ship. I warmly thank every officer & man & I send my best wishes to their wives and families. NAVAL SITUATION. General Review. The Mediterranean Fleet continues to be engaged in the Cretan operations. The German battleship Bismarck has been sunk in the Atlantic. Shipping losses have been light. Home Waters and North Atlantic. 2. Following reports received from air reconnaissance, the German battle ship Bismarck and cruiser Prinz Eugen were sighted by H.M. Ships Norfolk and Suffolk late on the 23rd May in -the Denmark Strait. They were shadowed until early on the 24th, when they were engaged by H.M. Ships Hood and Prince of Wales. H.M.S. Hood was hit and blew up, and the chase continued throughout the 24th. Torpedo aircraft from H.M.S. Victorious obtained one hit on Bismarck at 1220, but touch was then lost until 1030 on the 26th, when she was again sighted by a Catalina aircraft, and later by H.M.S. -

OCCASIONAL PAPER 84 Call the Hands Issue No. 43 July 2020 Operation Musketeer – the 1956 Suez Crisis, RAN Members’ Involvement This paper was written by Society volunteer, Commander Martin Linsley RAN Rtd. Its genesis was a list of the RAN participants in the Suez Crisis compiled by Mike Fogarty a former RAN officer and diplomat. Contributions were also received from participants; Commodore Kelvin Gulliver AM RAN Rtd and Captain Nick Bailey RAN Rtd who were served as junior officers in HMS Newfoundland at the time. One chronicler called it ‘the shortest and silliest war in history’i, but Operation Musketeer, better known as the 1956 Suez Crisis, signified the end of an era and the beginning of a new world order. The conflict focused on the Egyptian owned Suez Canal, and involving a conspiracy orchestrated by France, the UK and Israel. At least 13 members of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) were involved.ii Following the end of WWII, the RAN maintained close links with the UK’s Royal Navy (RN), its parent service. It was common for RAN members, particularly officers, to be posted to the RN for ‘service, training and promotion courses’. The posting was welcomed by many. It began and ended with a 4/5 week’s sea passage travelling first class on a passenger liner. The overseas allowances were good and RAN personnel were the envy of their RN contemporaries. More than one young officer found his future wife during his time in the UK. Four other RAN members serving with the RN in 1956 had been commissioned from the ranks. -

Ici, l’auteur étudie l’impact de la British Ship Research Association, de la Parsons Marine Turbine Research and Development Association et, de façon tangentielle, d’un groupe de conseil en recherche privé, le Yarrow Admiralty Research Department (Y-ARD), une filiale de Yarrow Shipbuilders établie dans le district Scotstoun de la rivière Upper Clyde, et le National Physical Laboratory (NPL). Tangentially I review one private research consultancy cluster, the Yarrow Admiralty Research Department (YARD) an offshoot of Yarrow Shipbuilders, Scotstoun, on the Upper Clyde, and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). I also consider Wm Doxford & Sons, before assessing their individual and collective impact up to 1959, and the general situation in British shipbuilding and large marine engine manufacture.
