Battle of Britain 80 Trail
The Battle of Britain 2020 commemorates the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. The involvement of the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm in the Battle of Britain is relatively unknown and yet, despite its small numbers, had a significant impact on the battle. The Battle of Britain took place from July to October 1940. Having defeated France in the Spring of 1940, Germany began a campaign of air raids on Britain aiming to force a surrender or enabling a German invasion - Operation Sealion. The German air force, the Luftwaffe, targeted ports and ships, tried to destroy the RAF, aircraft factories and airfields, and then began bombing London in what become known as ‘The Blitz’. Did you know … Fighting between aircraft in the air is called a ‘dogfight’. During the Battle of Britain people on the ground could see the vapour trails from the fighting aircraft making patterns across the skies. Of the nearly 3,000 pilots who flew during the Battle of Britain, 57 were Fleet Air Arm (FAA) pilots. Some pilots flew with FAA Squadrons, whilst other FAA pilots completed RAF flying training and were assigned to RAF fighter Squadrons. Have a go … Guide the Spitfire through the maze safely home to the airfield. 33 FAA pilots served with 804 and 808 , the two Fleet Air Arm Squadrons officially classed as having taken an active part in the Battle of Britain. They operated under Fighter Command, providing Dockyard defence. 804 Naval Air Squadron, based at Hatston, consisted of 22 pilots flying Gloster Sea Gladiators (and later the Grumman Martlet). -

Introduction This is a book about HMS EAGLE for those who served in her, but many others will read it: wives, parents, sweethearts and friends. To those who do, may I suggest that you concentrate on reading between the lines. If you do this you will recognise at once the labour of love which the compilation of this book entailed. You will also recognise that here is the last saga of a Great Ship, prepared to fight if needed, prepared to aid anyone in distress, prepared to represent her country honourably on all occasions and in all parts of the world. In the many photographs you can meet the men of EAGLE, no less a band of brothers than the men of Nelson's ships. Between the lines in this book, with its frequent understatement, you will find an anatomy of the Royal Navy revealed in the character, courage, fortitude, humour and kindliness of EAGLE's officers and men. EDITOR'S NOTE - We regret that this souvenir book is in `paperback' form, but by sacrificing hard covers we have been able to include a lot more material than would otherwise have been possible with the money available. Should you wish for a copy bound in boards, then, it is quite easy to get this done by any bookbinder - it would not be very expensive. Master Narrative Ours Is the Epic Story of the Royal Navy, Its Impact on Britain and the World from Its Origins in 625 A.D
NMRN Master Narrative Ours is the epic story of the Royal Navy, its impact on Britain and the world from its origins in 625 A.D. to the present day. We will tell this emotionally-coloured and nuanced story, one of triumph and achievement as well as failure and muddle, through four key themes:- People. We tell the story of the Royal Navy’s people. We examine the qualities that distinguish people serving at sea: courage, loyalty and sacrifice but also incidents of ignorance, cruelty and cowardice. We trace the changes from the amateur ‘soldiers at sea’, through the professionalization of officers and then ships’ companies, onto the ‘citizen sailors’ who fought the World Wars and finally to today’s small, elite force of men and women. We highlight the change as people are rewarded in war with personal profit and prize money but then dispensed with in peace, to the different kind of recognition given to salaried public servants. Increasingly the people’s story becomes one of highly trained specialists, often serving in branches with strong corporate identities: the Royal Marines, the Submarine Service and the Fleet Air Arm. We will examine these identities and the Royal Navy’s unique camaraderie, characterised by simultaneous loyalties to ship, trade, branch, service and comrades. Purpose. We tell the story of the Royal Navy’s roles in the past, and explain its purpose today. Using examples of what the service did and continues to do, we show how for centuries it was the pre-eminent agent of first the British Crown and then of state policy throughout the world. -

Journalists wrote about it at the time, many people who were involved wrote about it in the immediate years that followed, and historians have tried to put it all together. The issues of foreign policy at the strategic level and the military operations that took place in this period have been especially well covered. However, the question of military strategic alternatives in this important era of British foreign policy has been less studied. -

First Wright brothers’ airplane patent, based on their 1902 glider, is filed in America. Aug. 8, 1903. The Langley gasoline engine model airplane is successfully launched from a catapult on a houseboat. Dec. 8, 1903. Second and last trial of the Langley airplane, piloted by Charles M. Manly, is wrecked in launching from a houseboat on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. Dec. 17, 1903. At Kill Devil Hill near Kitty Hawk, N.C., Orville Wright flies for about 12 seconds over a distance of 120 feet, achieving the world’s first manned, powered, sustained, and controlled flight in a heavier-than-air machine. The Wright brothers made four flights that day. On the last, Wilbur Wright flew for 59 seconds over a distance of 852 feet. (Three days earlier, Wilbur Wright had attempted the first powered flight, managing to cover 105 feet in 3.5 seconds, but he could not sustain or control the flight and crashed.) Dawn at Kill Devil Jewel of the Air 1905 Jan. 18, 1905. The Wright brothers open negotiations with the US government to build an airplane for the Army, but nothing comes of this first meeting. -

A/C SERIAL No.WG768 SECTION 2B INDIVIDUAL HISTORY SHORT SB5 WG768 MUSEUM ACCESSION NUMBER 85/A/06 Built as sole example of its type by Short Brothers and Harland at Sydenham, Belfast to specification ER.100, to contract 6/Aircraft/5347/CB.7 (a). This aircraft was used to find the optimum format for the planned English Electric P.1 interceptor, which became the Lightning supersonic fighter. It specifically investigated problems associated with low speed handling characteristics of swept back wings at speeds below 350 knots. Constructor’s number SH.1605. It could fly with different amount of wing sweep, though this could not be changed in flight, and with a conventional ‘T’ tail or low mounted tailplane. Ordered from Shorts as a way of checking the English Electric calculations on the Lightning, English Electric thought the project a wasted effort. 27 Jul 50 Allotted serial number WG768 2 Dec 52 Following delivery from Belfast by sea and road, first flight at A&AEE, Boscombe Down, with 50-degree wing sweep and high set fin-mounted tailplane. Pilot Tom Brooke-Smith. Completed its initial test schedule without incident within seven months, though very underpowered. 29 Jul 53 First flight with new 60 degree sweep wing; the aircraft had earlier been returned to Belfast for alteration of the wing angle by installing this new wing. Aug 53 Flown for first time by English Electric chief test pilot, Roland Beamont, who was in charge of the P.1 flight-testing programme; he felt that the T- tail was unsatisfactory. 5 Sep 53 Made its first public appearance at the S.B.A.C show at Farnborough, flown by Tom Brooke-Smith. -

Charles Bruce Gear Born: 23 Aug 1883 Brough, Nesting, Died: 1 Jan 1915 At sea Seaman in the Royal Navy, Royal Naval Reserve, H.M.S. "Formidable." Service no: B 4626. Awarded 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. Father: Magnus GEAR, b. 1844, Brough, Nesting, d. 1938, Aberdeen, (Age 94 years) Mother: Charlotte WILLIAMSON, b. 1848, Catfirth, Nesting, d. 19 Feb 1926, Brough, Nesting, SHI, SCT (Age 78 years) Married: 10 Jan 1871 Nesting. HMS Formidable, the third of four ships of that name to serve in the Royal Navy, was the lead ship of her class of predreadnought battleships. Commissioned in 1904, she served initially with the Mediterranean Fleet, transferring to the Channel Fleet in 1908. In 1912, she was assigned to the 5th Battle Squadron, which was stationed at Nore. Following the outbreak of World War I, the squadron conducted operations in the English Channel, and was based at Sheerness to guard against a possible German invasion. Despite reports of submarine activity, early in the morning of 1 January 1915, whilst on exercise in the English Channel, Formidable sank after being hit by two torpedoes. She was the second British battleship to be sunk by enemy action during the First World War. Technical characteristics: HMS Formidable was laid down at Portsmouth Dockyard on 21 March 1898 and launched on 17 November 1898. She was completed in September 1901, but due to difficulties with machinery contractors her readiness for service was delayed, and she was not commissioned for another three years. Formidable had the same-calibre armament and was similar in appearance to the Majestic and Canopus classes that preceded her. -

Captain's Foreword by Captain P. M. Compston ROYAL NAVY The Editor has kindly invited me to write the foreword to this Book o f the Commission. Normally such remarks are recorded when the ship is on her way home and we are looking forward to a warm welcome from our families and friends on arrival at our Home Port. However, as far as VICTORIOUS is concerned, events have dictated otherwise, and we shall shortly be flying back according to the timing of our reliefs arrival at Singapore. It is a great disappointment to me, and I am certain to many of you that it has to be this way. It is also a great pity that this should happen when VICTORIOUS can be considered, in every sense of the word, a fully operational strike carrier. That she has reached this stage is almost entirely due to your efforts and hard work, and your determination to overcome the handicaps with The ship has a very good name in the Middle and Far East Stations, both at sea and in harbour, and in spite of the operational requirements I am glad that we have been allowed to enjoy some interesting visits, during all of which you have been a credit to the Service and your Country.
