Air commanders have clashed continually with ground leaders over the proper use of aircraft in the support of ground operations. This is perhaps not surprising given the very different outlooks of the two services on what constitutes prop- er air support. Often this has turned into a competition between the two serv- ices for resources to execute and control close air support operations. Although such differences extend well back to the initial use of the airplane as a military weapon, in this book the author looks at the period 1946- 1973, a period in which technological advances in the form of jet aircraft, weapons, communications, and other electronic equipment played significant roles. Doctrine, too, evolved and this very important subject is discussed in detail. Close air support remains a critical mission today and the lessons of yesterday should not be ignored. This book makes a notable contribution in seeing that it is not ignored. -

The Fighting Five-Tenth: One Fighter-Bomber Squadron’s Experience during the Development of World War II Tactical Air Power by Adrianne Lee Hodgin Bruce A dissertation submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Auburn University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Auburn, Alabama December 14, 2013 Keywords: World War II, fighter squadrons, tactical air power, P-47 Thunderbolt, European Theater of Operations Copyright 2013 by Adrianne Lee Hodgin Bruce Approved by William Trimble, Chair, Alumni Professor of History Alan Meyer, Assistant Professor of History Mark Sheftall, Associate Professor of History Abstract During the years between World War I and World War II, many within the Army Air Corps (AAC) aggressively sought an independent air arm and believed that strategic bombardment represented an opportunity to inflict severe and dramatic damages on the enemy while operating autonomously. In contrast, working in cooperation with ground forces, as tactical forces later did, was viewed as a subordinate role to the army‘s infantry and therefore upheld notions that the AAC was little more than an alternate means of delivering artillery. When President Franklin Delano Roosevelt called for a significantly expanded air arsenal and war plan in 1939, AAC strategists saw an opportunity to make an impression. Eager to exert their sovereignty, and sold on the efficacy of heavy bombers, AAC leaders answered the president‘s call with a strategic air doctrine and war plans built around the use of heavy bombers. The AAC, renamed the Army Air Forces (AAF) in 1941, eventually put the tactical squadrons into play in Europe, and thus tactical leaders spent 1943 and the beginning of 1944 preparing tactical air units for three missions: achieving and maintaining air superiority, isolating the battlefield, and providing air support for ground forces. -

A/C SERIAL No.WG768 SECTION 2B INDIVIDUAL HISTORY SHORT SB5 WG768 MUSEUM ACCESSION NUMBER 85/A/06 Built as sole example of its type by Short Brothers and Harland at Sydenham, Belfast to specification ER.100, to contract 6/Aircraft/5347/CB.7 (a). This aircraft was used to find the optimum format for the planned English Electric P.1 interceptor, which became the Lightning supersonic fighter. It specifically investigated problems associated with low speed handling characteristics of swept back wings at speeds below 350 knots. Constructor’s number SH.1605. It could fly with different amount of wing sweep, though this could not be changed in flight, and with a conventional ‘T’ tail or low mounted tailplane. Ordered from Shorts as a way of checking the English Electric calculations on the Lightning, English Electric thought the project a wasted effort. 27 Jul 50 Allotted serial number WG768 2 Dec 52 Following delivery from Belfast by sea and road, first flight at A&AEE, Boscombe Down, with 50-degree wing sweep and high set fin-mounted tailplane. Pilot Tom Brooke-Smith. Completed its initial test schedule without incident within seven months, though very underpowered. 29 Jul 53 First flight with new 60 degree sweep wing; the aircraft had earlier been returned to Belfast for alteration of the wing angle by installing this new wing. Aug 53 Flown for first time by English Electric chief test pilot, Roland Beamont, who was in charge of the P.1 flight-testing programme; he felt that the T- tail was unsatisfactory. 5 Sep 53 Made its first public appearance at the S.B.A.C show at Farnborough, flown by Tom Brooke-Smith. -

Hawker Typhoon 48” Wing Span (1.20m) Plan. The Hawker Typhoon was a British single-seat fighter-bomber, produced by Hawker Aircraft. While the Typhoon was designed to be a medium-high altitude interceptor, and a direct replacement for the Hawker Hurricane, several design problems were encountered, and the Typhoon never completely satisfied this requirement.[3] Other external events in 1940 prolonged the gestation of the Typhoon. Nicknamed the Tiffy in RAF slang, the Typhoon's service introduction in mid-1941 was also plagued with problems, and for several months the aircraft faced a doubtful future.[3] However, in 1941 the Luftwaffe brought the formidable Focke-Wulf Fw 190 into service: the Typhoon was the only fighter in the RAF inventory capable of catching the Fw 190 at low altitudes and, as a result, secured a new role as a low-altitude interceptor.[4] Through the support of pilots such as Roland Beamont the Typhoon also established itself in roles such as night-time intruder[5] and a long-range fighter. From late 1942 the Typhoon was equipped with bombs; from late 1943 ground attack rockets were added to the Typhoon's armoury. Design and development Even before the new Hurricane was rolling off the production lines in March 1937, Sydney Camm had moved on to designing its replacement. Histoire des escadrilles 331 et 332 L’escadrille 331 a été formée comme une escadrille de chasse sur la base de la R A F de Catterick dans le Yorkshire le 21 Juillet 1941. Les membres de l'escadrille étaient norvégiens, sauf pour le personnel au sol et le commandant. L’escadrille 331 est la première à être créée avec des pilotes Norvégiens en exil. Ce qui a donné le code"FN" à leurs avions au sein de la RAF. Ce code a été souvent traduit comme une abréviation pour "First norvégien" ou "Pour la Norvège", cette dernière étant la devise de l'escadrille officielle, en norvégien (-For Norge). L'insigne de l'escadrille était une épée Viking norvégienne et une épée britannique en sautoir, liés ensemble par un anneau - symbole de l'amitié entre la Norvège et la Grande-Bretagne. L'escadrille a été initialement équipée de Hawker Hurricane. Son rôle a été de fournir une protection pour le nord de l’Ecosse en étant basé à Castletown vers le 21 Août 1941. En mai 1942, l'escadrille s'est déplacée au sud sur la base de la R A F North Weald, après avoir était rééquipée avec des spitfires en Novembre 1941 La 331 ° Escadrille est rejointe par une seconde Escadrille norvégienne, la 332 qui va également voler sur Spitfires. Ensemble, ils sont connus comme le « North Weald Wing « et font partie du parapluie aérien des Alliés au cours du raid sur Dieppe, puis plus tard sur les balayages de combat et les opérations d'escorte sur la France occupée et les Pays Bas.
