The aim of this paper is to document the ammonite fauna of the upper part of the Late Tithonian collected at the key section of Le Chouet (Drôme, SE France). Emphasis is laid on new and poorly known Ataxioceratidae, Himalayitidae and Neocomitidae from the upper part of the Tithonian. Among the Ataxioceratidae, a new account on the taxonomy and relationship between Paraulacosphinctes Schindewolf and Moravisphinctes Tavera is presented. Regarding the Himalayitidae, the range and content of Micracanthoceras Spath is discussed and two new genera are introduced: Ardesciella gen. nov., for a group of Mediterranean ammonites that is homoeomorphic with the Andean genus Corongoceras Spath, and Pratumidiscus gen. nov. for a specimen that shows morphological similarities with the Boreal genera Riasanites Spath and Riasanella Mitta. Finally, the occurrence of Neocomitidae in the uppermost Tithonian is documented by the presence of the reputedly Berriasian genera Busnardoiceras Tavera and Pseudargentiniceras Spath. The shell is unique because it retains the complete jaw apparatus in the body chamber. The articulation of the Lamellaptychus and the corresponding upper beak are well preserved. The function of the aptychus is discussed in general, and an operculum function is thought to be unlikely. The formation of strongly calcified aptychi in aspidoceratids and some oppeliid ammonoids is interpreted as an added ballast weight to stabilize the conch for swimming in the water column. Die Funktion des Aptychus wird allgemein diskutiert und eine Deckelfunktion für unwahrscheinlich gehalten. Die Ausbildung stark verkalkter Aptychen wie in Aspidoceraten und manchen Oppeliiden wird als zusätzliches Tariergewicht gedeutet, um das Gehäuse in starker bewegtem Wasser zu stabilisieren. The systematic revision o� these biostratigraphy well constrained ammonites, allowed us to work on two issues. On the fist place, we improved the systematic and taxonomic knowledge about Pseudosaynella raresulcata (d’Orbigny, 1841), Pseudosaynella bicurvata (Michelin, 1838) and Pseudohaploceras liptoviensis (Zeuschner, 1856) whose definitions, previous to this study, were based on scarce material and �ew studies on their ontoge- netic variation. On a second place, we constrained their stratigraphical ranges, especially �or the Pseudosaynella species, and their correlation with the lower Aptian standard ammonite Mediterranean zonation. The Barremian heteromorph ammonite Dissimilites from northern Italy: Taxon- omy and evolutionary implications. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 59 (3): 663–680. A new acrioceratid ammonite, Dissimilites intermedius sp. nov., from the Barremian (Lower Cretaceous) of the Puez area (Dolomites, northern Italy) is described. Dissimilites intermedius sp. nov. is an intermediate form between D. dissimilis and D. trinodosum. The new species combines the ribbing style of D. dissimilis (bifurcating with intercalating single ribs) with the tuberculation style of D. trinodosum (trituberculation on entire shell). The shallow-helical spire, entirely comprising single ribs intercalated by trituberculated main ribs, is similar to the one of the assumed ancestor Acrioceras, whereas the increasing curvation of the younger forms resembles similar patterns observed in the descendant Toxoc- eratoides. These characters support the hypothesis of a direct evolutionary lineage from Acrioceras via Dissimilites to Toxoceratoides. D. intermedius sp. nov. ranges from the upper Lower Barremian (Moutoniceras moutonianum Zone) to the lower Upper Barremian (Toxancyloceras vandenheckii Zone). The new species allows to better understand the evolu- tion of the genus Dissimilites. The genus appears within the Nicklesia pulchella Zone represented by D. duboise, which most likely evolved into D. dissimilis. In the Kotetishvilia compressissima Zone, two morphological forms developed: smaller forms very similar to Acrioceras and forms with very long shaft and juvenile spire like in D. intermedius sp. nov. ABSTRACT - L. monachum has been frequently recorded in the Upper Bajocian and Lower Bathonian, but references in literature differ in morphological details as they are based on a juvenile and poorly-preserved holotype. In addition, the type of L. monachum comes from a bed affected by taphonomical condensation mixing fossils from Early and Middle Bathonian times, i.e. the biochronological meaning of Gemmellaro’s taxon cannot be specified with biostratigraphic criteria from the type-locality. These references are here revised and refused on the basis of two topotypes recently sampled at Monte Erice in western Sicily, which allow a precise morphological definition of L. monachum by means of architectural and sutural characteristics. The only acceptable biostratigraphic datum comes from a Lower Bathonian specimen from southern France. The differences from L. ferrifex, L. magnum, and L. ventriplanum are discussed. Finally, the suture-line of topotype PU111502 of L. monachum and those specimens from the Upper Bajocian of the Venetian Alps, here named L. aff. monachum, support the phyletic relationships between L. ferrifex and L. magnum through transitional forms of L. monachum aged for the Tethyan Early Bathonian. A previously unrecorded ammonite assemblage, comprising Lepthoplites sp., Callihoplites tetragonus (Seeley, 1865), C. cf. tetragonus, Arrhaphoceras cf. substuderi Spath, 1923, Cantabrigites sp., Stoliczkaiella (Stoliczkaiella) sp., Hamites cf. duplicatus Pictet and Campiche, 1861, H. cf. subvirgulatus Spath, 1941, and H. cf. venetzianus Pictet, 1847, is described from the mid-Cretaceous condensed succession at Annopol, Poland. These specimens are pre- served as pale phosphates or sandstone moulds in a bed of reworked phosphatic nodules near the top of the Albian. This assemblage has many species in common with the late late Albian faunas from condensed deposits of Eng- land, Switzerland, and France. The presence of Callihoplites tetragonus indicates the lowermost upper upper Al- bian Mortoniceras fallax Zone. The ammonites studied are the youngest elements in the phosphate bed, which also contains taxa as old as the middle Albian Hoplites dentatus Zone. This bed originated through condensation and reworking of nodules and fossils in a period of low net sedimentation rate, being probably a reflection of a sea-level drop at the boundary between the classic ammonite zones of Mortoniceras inflatum and Stoliczkaiella dispar. -

A 480 m section of marls with widely separated levels of nodular limestone in the Fahdene Formation north of Bou Khadra in Tebessa Province, northeastern Algeria, spans the Lower/Middle Cenomanian boundary. A total of 30 ammonite species are present, of which two: Forbesiceras reversum and Calycoceras (Newboldiceras) algeriense are new. The fauna allows recognition of the Northwest European upper Lower Cenomanian Mantelliceras dixoni Zone, the succeeding lower Middle Cenomanian Cunningtoniceras inerme Zone, the Acanthoceras rhotomagense Zone and its subzones of Turrilites costatus and Turrilites acutus. The sequence of index species occurs in the same order in both north-eastern Tunisia and the Southerham Grey Pit in Sussex (and indeed elsewhere in North- west Europe), indicating these to be robust assemblage zones and subzones that can be recognised on both the north and south sides of the Tethys. -

Résumé : une nouvelle espèce du Barrémien inférieur, Paracrioceras giraudae sp. nov., est classée dans genre Paracrioceras Spath, 1924, dont la compréhension a été récemment révisée. La position stratigraphique de Paracrioceras giraudae sp. nov. n’a pas été précisée lors de sa mise en collection. Cette espèce est, comme les autres espèces du genre Paracrioceras Spath, 1924, située dans le Barrémien inférieur, dans la Zone à Kotetishvilia nicklesi. C’est à partir du genre Criosarasinella Thieuloy, 1977 du Valanginien supérieur, qu’apparaissent les Crioceratitidae Gill, 1871 et en particulier le genre Crioceratites Leveille, 1837 dont les espèces les plus anciennes apparaissent dans l’Hauterivien inférieur. Sur le plan stratigraphique, entre les différentes espèces de ces deux genres apparaissent des espèces intermédiaires dont l’association des caractères morpho- logiques des spécimens ne permettent pas de les classer totalement ni dans le genre Criosarasinella Thieuloy, 1977 ni dans le genre Crioceratites Leveille, 1837. Nous créons donc pour ces espèces le genre Procrioceratites gen. nov. et désignons Pro- crioceratites etiennei sp. nov. comme l’espèce-type de notre nouveau genre. THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS PALEONTOLOGICAL CONTRIBUTIONS May 15, 1970 Paper 47 SIGNIFICANCE OF SUTURES IN PHYLOGENY OF AMMONOIDEA JURGEN KULLMANN AND JOST WIEDMANN Universinit Tubingen, Germany ABSTRACT Because of their complex structure ammonoid sutures offer best possibilities for the recognition of homologies. Sutures comprise a set of individual elements, which may be changed during the course of ontogeny and phylogeny as a result of heterotopy, hetero- morphy, and heterochrony. By means of a morphogenetic symbol terminology, sutural formulas may be established which show the composition of adult sutures as well as their ontogenetic development. WEDEKIND ' S terminology system is preferred because it is the oldest and morphogenetically the most consequent, whereas RUZHENTSEV ' S system seems to be inadequate because of its usage of different symbols for homologous elements. WEDEKIND ' S system includes only five symbols: E (for external lobe), L (for lateral lobe), I (for internal lobe), A (for adventitious lobe), U (for umbilical lobe). Investigations on ontogenetic development show that all taxonomic groups of the entire superorder Ammonoidea can be compared one with another by means of their sutural development, expressed by their sutural formulas.
