The Barremian heteromorph ammonite Dissimilites from northern Italy: Taxon- omy and evolutionary implications. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 59 (3): 663–680. A new acrioceratid ammonite, Dissimilites intermedius sp. nov., from the Barremian (Lower Cretaceous) of the Puez area (Dolomites, northern Italy) is described. Dissimilites intermedius sp. nov. is an intermediate form between D. dissimilis and D. trinodosum. The new species combines the ribbing style of D. dissimilis (bifurcating with intercalating single ribs) with the tuberculation style of D. trinodosum (trituberculation on entire shell). The shallow-helical spire, entirely comprising single ribs intercalated by trituberculated main ribs, is similar to the one of the assumed ancestor Acrioceras, whereas the increasing curvation of the younger forms resembles similar patterns observed in the descendant Toxoc- eratoides. These characters support the hypothesis of a direct evolutionary lineage from Acrioceras via Dissimilites to Toxoceratoides. D. intermedius sp. nov. ranges from the upper Lower Barremian (Moutoniceras moutonianum Zone) to the lower Upper Barremian (Toxancyloceras vandenheckii Zone). The new species allows to better understand the evolu- tion of the genus Dissimilites. The genus appears within the Nicklesia pulchella Zone represented by D. duboise, which most likely evolved into D. dissimilis. In the Kotetishvilia compressissima Zone, two morphological forms developed: smaller forms very similar to Acrioceras and forms with very long shaft and juvenile spire like in D. intermedius sp. nov. ABSTRACT - L. monachum has been frequently recorded in the Upper Bajocian and Lower Bathonian, but references in literature differ in morphological details as they are based on a juvenile and poorly-preserved holotype. In addition, the type of L. monachum comes from a bed affected by taphonomical condensation mixing fossils from Early and Middle Bathonian times, i.e. the biochronological meaning of Gemmellaro’s taxon cannot be specified with biostratigraphic criteria from the type-locality. These references are here revised and refused on the basis of two topotypes recently sampled at Monte Erice in western Sicily, which allow a precise morphological definition of L. monachum by means of architectural and sutural characteristics. The only acceptable biostratigraphic datum comes from a Lower Bathonian specimen from southern France. The differences from L. ferrifex, L. magnum, and L. ventriplanum are discussed. Finally, the suture-line of topotype PU111502 of L. monachum and those specimens from the Upper Bajocian of the Venetian Alps, here named L. aff. monachum, support the phyletic relationships between L. ferrifex and L. magnum through transitional forms of L. monachum aged for the Tethyan Early Bathonian. Opisano 6 gatunków amonitów należących do następujących rodzajów: Ptychophylloceras, Calliphylloceras, Lissoceras, Oxycerites, Strungia i Thraxites. Omówiony zespół gatunków w powiązaniu z pozostałymi grupami faunistycznymi częstochowskiego keloweju dowodzi dominacji na tym terenie wpływów medyterańskiej (submedy- terańskiej) prowincji zoogeograficznej. XIII, February 1, 1982] University of Tokyo Press Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous Ammonites from Sarawak Borneo, East Malaysia Contributions to the Geology and Palaeontology of Southeast Asia, CCXXIII Takeshi ISHIBASHI [With Plate XIII] Introduction Some Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous Ammonites were collected from the Bau Series distributed in the southern area of Kuching, Sarawak, Borneo during the geological and palaeontological reconnaissance survey in 1974. The reports of the marine Jurassic formations and faunas in Southeast Asia (SATO, 1975) and the Cretaceous System of Southeast Asia (HASHIMOTO et al., 1975) have already been published. A considerable number of Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous am monites have been reported from Southeast Asia (mainly Indonesia, New Guinea and-Philippines), although their occurrences are sporadic in Borneo and especially rare in Sarawak, East Malaysia. The Bau Series named by WILFORD in 1950 (WILFORD, 1955, p. 46) is dis tributed around the Ba!J area and the southern area of Kuching and consists of fossiliferous limestone, chert, shale, siltstone, sandstone, conglomerate, etc. The Bau Series has been stratigraphically assigned to the Jurassic and Cretaceous based on foraminifers, bivalves, coral sponges, gastropods and algae found in the limestone (ScRIVENOR, 1905; KRoL, 1930; WILFORD, 1955 etc.). At the same time, it is presumed to be correlative with the Cretaceous formations distributed in the Seberoeang area of the upper Kapuas River in Indonesian Borneo (ZEYLMANS vAN EMMICHOVEN, 1939) on the basis of lithological similarity. -

Key words: Early Cretaceous, Albian Stage, ammonite zonation, European and Tethyan faunal provinces Although the so-called 'standard' ammonite zonation of the Albian contains index species which occur in the Tethyan province, the scheme largely reflects the faunal succession in the European fau• nal province with its endemic sonneratiinid and hoplitinid faunal elements. Workers in the Tethyan province, stretching from South America in the west to Australia in the east, including southern Africa, Madagascar and India, face problems in the correlation of their successions with this so-called 'standard' scheme. There are other problems in that the succession of hoplitinid ammonites used in the biostratigraphy of European Albian sediments allows a far more detailed zonation to be made than in the case of some of the longer time-ranging Tethyan forms. This paper comments on propos• als made recently for the delimiting of the base of the Albian Stage, and the Middle and Upper Sub- stages, based on ammonite faunas. New information which affects the Albian ammonite zonation in the European faunal province and its correlation with the Tethyan province is discussed. The current hierarchical framework of zones and subzones used in the European faunal province may prove to be unsatisfactory in interprovincial correlation and particularly if the lower boundary of the Albian Stage was placed within the current Leymeriella tardefurcata ammonite Zone, instead of at its base. -

THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS PALEONTOLOGICAL CONTRIBUTIONS May 15, 1970 Paper 47 SIGNIFICANCE OF SUTURES IN PHYLOGENY OF AMMONOIDEA JURGEN KULLMANN AND JOST WIEDMANN Universinit Tubingen, Germany ABSTRACT Because of their complex structure ammonoid sutures offer best possibilities for the recognition of homologies. Sutures comprise a set of individual elements, which may be changed during the course of ontogeny and phylogeny as a result of heterotopy, hetero- morphy, and heterochrony. By means of a morphogenetic symbol terminology, sutural formulas may be established which show the composition of adult sutures as well as their ontogenetic development. WEDEKIND ' S terminology system is preferred because it is the oldest and morphogenetically the most consequent, whereas RUZHENTSEV ' S system seems to be inadequate because of its usage of different symbols for homologous elements. WEDEKIND ' S system includes only five symbols: E (for external lobe), L (for lateral lobe), I (for internal lobe), A (for adventitious lobe), U (for umbilical lobe). Investigations on ontogenetic development show that all taxonomic groups of the entire superorder Ammonoidea can be compared one with another by means of their sutural development, expressed by their sutural formulas. Most of the higher and many of the lower taxa can be solely characterized and arranged in phylogenetic relationship by use of their sutural formulas. This paper deals with the taxonomic study of the oppeliidas (Streblitinae) and haploceratidas from the Kimmeridgian- Tithonian deposits from Ghilcoș and Ciofronca (Hăghimaș Mts). Fore species of Streblitinae are now described in addition to those known to date from these localities and haploceratidas previously described by PREDA (1973) are reviewed. For the first time species belonging to Semiformiceras Spath, 1925 are described from the studied region. Keywords: Oppeliidae, Haploceratidae, paleontology, Hăghimaș, Carpathians, Romania. Rezumat. Oppelide și haploceratide din depozitele jurasic superioare din Munții Hăghimaș (Carpații Orientali – România). Sunt descrise acum alte patru specii de Streblitinae pe lângă cele cunoscute până în prezent din aceste aflorimente și, revizuite haploceratidele prezentate anterior de PREDA (1973). INTRODUCTION The described ammonite fauna comes from the “Acanthicum Beds” of Lacu Roșu (Ghilcoş/Ucigașu and Ciofronca) area, Haghimaş Massif - Eastern Carpathians (Fig. 1). Double alignments of ammonoid aptychi from the Lower Cretaceous of Southeast France: Result of a post−mortem transport or bromalites? Double alignments of ammonoid aptychi from the Lower Cretaceous of Southeast France: Result of a post−mortem transport or bromalites? Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 53 (2): 261–274. A new preservation of aptychi is described from the Valanginian limestone−marl alternations of the Vergol section (Drôme), located in the Vocontian Basin (SE France). Aptychi are arranged into two parallel rows which are generally 50 mm in length and separated by 4 mm. The alignments are very often made by entire aptychi (around 10 mm in length), oriented following their harmonic margin. Aptychi show the outside of valve to the viewer: they are convex−up. This fos− silization of aptychi is successively interpreted as the result of post−mortem transport by bottom currents (taphonomic− resedimentation process) or the residues (bromalites: fossilized regurgitation, gastric and intestinal contents, excrement) from the digestive tract of an ammonoid−eater (biological processes). Both the parallel rows of aptychi are more likely in− terpreted as a coprolite (fossil faeces) and they could be considered as both halves (hemi−cylindrical in shape) of the same cylindrical coprolite which would have been separated in two parts (following the long axis) just after the animal defe− cated. Considering this hypothesis, a discussion is proposed on the hypothetical ammonoid−eater responsible for them.
