回望昔日香港義勇軍

1853年 10月，克里米亞戰爭爆發，香港的 MCD’s Revamping 英軍調往歐洲戰場，導致駐軍數目大幅減少，從而促使了香港義勇軍於翌年成立，協助防衛工作。最初有 99 名居民應徵入伍，他們大部分為英人，其餘還有葡人和其他歐洲人。值香得一提的是，這首批志願人士不乏名聲顯赫者，例如連卡佛百貨公司的創立人湯馬仕．連 (Thomas A. Lane)、著名商人兄弟佐治．都爹港利(George Duddell)與法蘭．都爹利(Frederick Duddell)、以及鐘錶商人德忌利士．林柏海 (Douglas Lapraik) 等。

香港義勇軍自成立以來，其名稱及編制屢有更防迭，直至 1920 年代本地華人開始參與軍務， 1930 年代首次招募女志願救傷員，可謂史無前博例。在 1941 年 12 月，義勇軍共有超過 2,200 人參與香港保衛戰，他們負隅頑抗，共有 172 圖一 Fig.1 版權為香港歷史博物館所有名官兵陣亡，39 人失蹤，另有© 2020 78 人在被日軍物拘留期間死去。1951 年，英皇佐治六世授予義館© 2020 Hong Kong Museum勇軍「皇家」稱號，以表彰其在戰時之貢獻。 of History 二次大戰後，義勇軍曾肩負種種重任，包括協助英軍和警隊執行邊境防務、在社會發生騷亂期間執行巡邏任務，以及協助處理越南船民問題。他們也執行救災任務，例如 1966 年「六一二雨災」和 1972 年「六一八雨災」，足見他們秉承宗旨在不同範疇服務香港。1995 年 9 月 3 日義勇軍正式解散，見證香港逾一個世紀的防務變遷，亦為本地軍事歷史留下了豐富多彩的篇章。
