Email: [email protected] Teaching Assistant: Nie Youping Email: TBA Lecture time: Tuesday 1:30-3:15 pm, Room NAH 11 Tutorial time: Tuesday 4:30-5:15pm, Room MMW 706 Course description One could be forgiven for thinking that little of archaeological interest survives in Hong Kong’s built-up and densely populated environment. But that could not be further from the truth. Contrary to the politically-motivated myth of ‘a barren rock’ as portrayed by the British in the 19th century, Hong Kong actually has a rich archaeological heritage spanning 6,000-7,000 years of human history. Who were the earliest inhabitants, where were they from, and what brought them to Hong Kong? This course reviews major archaeological discoveries in Hong Kong from the 1920s to the present, examines cultural developments from the Neolithic to the Qing Dynasty, and discusses the material culture, economies, social structures and (as far as is possible) the belief systems of Hong Kong’s ancient peoples. The course will also compare and contrast the evidence for prehistoric and historical cultural developments in Hong Kong with those occurring in South China and the wider Southeast Asian region. The significance of Hong Kong archaeology in the contexts of prehistoric and historical South China and Southeast Asia will also be evaluated. In addition, there will be an exploration of the tensions and potentials existing in Hong Kong between its development-driven economy and rich archaeological resource, as played out in the field of impact assessment archaeology.

To obtain the valuable opinion of visitors as a source of reference for the preparatory work, the museum carried out a survey, lasting a full month, with the objective of: understanding the views of visitors on the permanent exhibition and their expectations of it; and establishing the demographic profile of visitors. Research methods The Hong Kong Museum of History appointed an independent research organisation, Actrium Solutions, to perform the research. Face-to-face interviews based on a questionnaire were conducted in January 2016, with the research adopting a quantitative survey method targeting visitors over 8 years of age. In total, 1,412 target respondents were surveyed, and a response rate of 80% was achieved. During the same period, the museum collected 226 completed questionnaires by e-mail, fax and post, thus producing in a total of 1,638 completed questionnaires.

This thesis investigates the factors which may influence the possibility of a history museum to become a tourist attraction, and factors which may shape the decision making process of tourists to include history museums in their itineraries, through a comparative study between the two history museums in Hong Kong and Macau. Based on data collected by observation and in-depth interviews, this thesis investigate the importance of historical and cultural context of the destination, the content of the exhibition and personal background in determining the potential of history museums to become tourist attractions, government policies in the two cities, as well as the managerial strategies of the two museums. This study illustrates that different cultural contexts in different cities, including the economic structures, the importance and the content of tourism, as well as government's policies on the mission of history museums, all play vital roles on whether history museums can attract more tourists. While a city with better preserved cultural heritage provides a tangible setting for the construction of the city's "historical" image, thus cultivating tourists' interests to history museums, government's vision and policy of cities are also vital in nourishing the potential of history museums to become tourist attraction.

Theoretically sensitised to identity crisis, the study analyses how Hong Kong and Macao heritage managers utilise complex transnational memories to (re)construct an identity aligned with, yet distinct from, that of China. Through a critical discourse analysis of interviews and discursive exhibition and museum texts, the article reveals that museum managers formulate heritage imaginings and a sense of belonging(s) through defining the collective memory for “Self” and “Other”. The article concludes that, by collective memory-building, museum professionals make tangible statements of national identities through legitimating negotiations and resistance in heritage tourism discourse. Implications for heritage tourism studies and museum management are also discussed. With jet lag slowing my pace, coupled with intermittent rain dissuading outdoor activities, I set aside one day to learn about Hong Kong’s history. The best place to begin my adventure was at the Hong Kong Museum of History. This museum was established in 1975 “to preserve and promote the historical and cultural heritage of Hong Kong.” HONG KONG MUSEUM OF HISTORY The focal point of this institution is the permanent exhibit—The Hong Kong Story. It includes eight galleries and over 4,000 exhibits incorporating 50 multimedia programs. Each gallery explores the historical period using authentic materials as well as video presentations that provide a narrative of key points. The ten videos range from four to eleven minutes in duration This historical journey begins with the Devonian Period, 400 million years ago, and ends in 1997 with the return of Hong Kong’s sovereignty to China. By using just a little bit of one’s imagination, visitors can easily go back in time as they visit each gallery. The signs have English translations and the videos can be watched in Cantonese, Putonghua, or English. When I visited, the permanent exhibit was free.
