  • 31. August 2021 MORTIER AWARDS in Memoriam Gerard Mortier
SALZBURGER FESTSPIELE 17. Juli – 31. August 2021 MORTIER AWARDS In memoriam Gerard Mortier The Mortier Award for music theatre and the Mortier Next Generation Award were established to draw inspiration for music theatre’s present and future from the legacy of Gerard Mortier, the opera and festival administrator and former artistic director of the Salzburg Festival, who died in 2014. The award honours figures who, like Mortier, pursue an interdisciplinary approach to renewing the art form of opera. It is therefore fitting that the polymath Alexander Kluge will be presented with the 2021 Mortier Award. The Next Generation Award, with a cash value of 30,000 Euro, goes to the German stage director Ulrike Schwab and is sponsored by the Friends of the Salzburg Festival. On the occasion of its centenary, the Salzburg Festival – to which during his tenure, Gerard Mortier gave many impulses still resonating today (1991-2001) – and the Friends Association are honouring the two laureates in a ceremony on 17 August. Following this event, artistic director Markus Hinterhäuser joins a discussion about the future outlook for music theatre with Asmik Grigorian, Ulrike Schwab and Franz Welser-Möst, moderated by Markus Thiel. (Mortier Awards Ceremony and Roundtable · Main Auditorium of the University · 17 August 2021, 4 pm · Registration required via www.festspielfreunde.at) “We are very grateful to the Association of Friends of the Salzburg Festival, which finances the Mortier Award. As so often, its contribution helps implement an issue central to the Salzburg Festival, turning it into reality,” says Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler. The Mortier Award was initiated in 2014 by Heinz Weyringer, artistic director of the Ring Award, a directing and stage competition, and Albrecht Thiemann, former managing editor of the international specialist journal Opernwelt (Berlin).

  • Echoes of the Avant-Garde in American Minimalist Opera
ECHOES OF THE AVANT-GARDE IN AMERICAN MINIMALIST OPERA Ryan Scott Ebright A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music. Chapel Hill 2014 Approved by: Mark Katz Tim Carter Brigid Cohen Annegret Fauser Philip Rupprecht © 2014 Ryan Scott Ebright ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Ryan Scott Ebright: Echoes of the Avant-garde in American Minimalist Opera (Under the direction of Mark Katz) The closing decades of the twentieth century witnessed a resurgence of American opera, led in large part by the popular and critical success of minimalism. Based on repetitive musical structures, minimalism emerged out of the fervid artistic intermingling of mid twentieth- century American avant-garde communities, where music, film, dance, theater, technology, and the visual arts converged. Within opera, minimalism has been transformational, bringing a new, accessible musical language and an avant-garde aesthetic of experimentation and politicization. Thus, minimalism’s influence invites a reappraisal of how opera has been and continues to be defined and experienced at the turn of the twenty-first century. “Echoes of the Avant-garde in American Minimalist Opera” offers a critical history of this subgenre through case studies of Philip Glass’s Satyagraha (1980), Steve Reich’s The Cave (1993), and John Adams’s Doctor Atomic (2005). This project employs oral history and archival research as well as musical, dramatic, and dramaturgical analyses to investigate three interconnected lines of inquiry. The first traces the roots of these operas to the aesthetics and practices of the American avant-garde communities with which these composers collaborated early in their careers.

  • WUORINEN Brokeback Mountain
WUORINEN Brokeback Mountain Few short stories have become so quickly and so deeply embedded in the American consciousness as Annie Proulx’s 1997 Brokeback Mountain. First published inThe New Yorker and made into a critically acclaimed 2005 movie, it now animates a starkly modernist opera by Charles Wuorinen, premiered last year at Madrid’s Teatro Real. The characters, and the bleak storyline, now operate almost at the level of myth: we know the narrative arc, the tragic conclusion, even the symbols and speaking tics that define the two cowboys, whose doomed love plays out over decades against the relentlessly hostile backdrop of the conservative American west. The opera, commissioned by Gerard Mortier and premiered only weeks before his death, received mixed but respectful reviews at its premiere. This DVD makes a strong case both for the original production (by Ivo van Hove) and for the opera itself. The music isn’t blithely charismatic like so many contemporary American operas today, and it owes far more to Schoenberg and Berg than to Britten, Bernstein or Copland. If Wuorinen hadn’t expressed interest in setting it to music years ago, it would likely have become yet another pastiche-filled work, passed around the regional opera circuit, where its main virtue would have been to offend no one. Wuorinen’s setting reminds one of Monteverdi – formal, stately and psychologically precise, with spare and often angular vocal lines set against prismatic bursts from the orchestra; the accompaniment oscillates between two basic ideas: hushed, sustained figures that suggest the influence of Debussy, and expressionist, often nervous outbursts.

• Award Ceremony Goethe Medal 2014 Nike Wagner: Laudatory Speech for Gerard Mortier (Check Against Delivery)
Award ceremony Goethe Medal 2014 Nike Wagner: Laudatory speech for Gerard Mortier (Check against delivery) He is no longer among us. Gerard Mortier passed away at the age of seventy this past March. The opera houses and festivals knew who they were mourning; the art world as a whole knew it. “One would have to go back to Sergei Diaghilev to come upon a similarly visionary art enabler,” wrote the music critic from the Süddeutsche Zeitung in his obituary. Gerard Mortier received the news and was pleased about receiving the Goethe Medal. Mortier became famous for his reforms of musical theatre and artistic production concepts, the polemicist in him was welcomed; able to cut even the most pompous establishments – such as the Vienna Philharmonic – down to size. Until it seemed that Mortier was called upon whenever a musical theatre became bogged down in routine or in self-complacency. The diminutive, dignified, ever polite and elegant baker’s son from Ghent would restore maiden aunt opera’s social role – and what’s more – its existential significance. How did this come about? Born in 1943, the Jesuit alum initially studied law. After assistant positions at the Flanders Festival, he completed his apprenticeship in the management offices of operas in Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Paris. “Apprenticeship” is probably not the proper term for it for why, after 1973, his time under Christoph von Dohnany, should the Oper Frankfurt experience such a new era? Suddenly the opera was presenting dramaturgically sophisticated productions by newcomers such as Volker Schlöndorff, Achim Freyer and Klaus-Michael Grüber.

  • NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY Timbral Intention
NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY Timbral Intention: Examining the Contemporary Performance Practice and Techniques of Kaija Saariaho’s Vocal Music A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE BIENEN SCHOOL OF MUSIC IN PARTIAL FULFULLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS for the degree DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS Field of Voice Performance and Literature By Alison Wahl EVANSTON, ILLINOIS March 2017 2 ABSTRACT Kaija Saariaho’s vocal music is a rewarding challenge for a singer. Her works contain extended techniques and innovative performance practices, which allow her to create interesting and moving timbral effects. Her musical language has its foundation in her cultural identity, formed as a girl in the forests of Finland. The sound of the woods, birdsong, whispering, and wind are an integral part of Saariaho’s musical voice. Her creative use of text setting results in a highly emotional and unusual expression of poetry, although unconventional setting of words may necessitate some extra effort on the part of the performer. The extended techniques in her music are likewise emotionally driven, and include methods of fine variation in breathiness, pitch, and vibrato to create a wider palette of vocal sounds. Her use of electronics also allows her to write meaningful music with a unique musical atmosphere. In Saariaho’s collaboration with singers, she has proven to be extremely approachable and supportive, both when coaching performers of her work and developing new pieces with colleagues. Saariaho’s vocal music is more straightforward and less complex than her work for solo instruments in terms of rhythm and pitch collections; however, her innovative text setting and embracing of the wide spectrum of sound of the human voice results in a very colorful and deep musical language.
