4 A BRIEF HISTORY OF GARDINER, MONTANA

As the original entrance to the world’s first national park, the history of Gardiner, Montana is closely tied to the history of Yellowstone. Since the park was established in 1872, the “rough and tumble” community of Gardiner was created to serve the needs of park visitors from around the world.

Though Gardiner was not officially founded until 1880, references to an area known as “Gardner’s Hole” date back to the mid-1830s, and likely came from the fur trapper Johnson Gardner. Not much is known about Gardner, though an article in the 1903 issue of the local newspaper referred to him as “an outlaw and in general a worthless, dissolute character.” The community received its name from the Washburn-Langford-Doan party in 1870. The extra “I” was likely a phonetic misspelling of “Gardner” when pronounced by the infamous West Virginia Jim Bridger. In 1883, the Northern Pacific Railway extended its Park Branch Line south from Livingston as far as Cinnabar, a railroad stop just north of Gardiner. In 1903, the rail line was extended to Gardiner and continued to operate until 1948. 1903 also marks the year President dedicated the , an historic landmark that still stands today. The town has survived gold rushes, destructive fires, and the coming and going of the railroad. It has fed and sheltered miners and hosted pioneer visitors. Today, Gardiner is home to a range of businesses that welcome visitors to Yellowstone National Park from all over the world, from outfitters and guides to cozy diners to family-owned hotels. It remains the only gateway community with year-round access to Yellowstone National Park.

7 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

QUESTION: Where can I see wildlife? ANSWER: You can see a lot of animals in the field across from Park Street, near the entrance to Yellowstone. Keep your eyes peeled for elk, pronghorn, deer, and bison. If you’re hoping to see bighorn sheep, look closely at the rock cliffs between Gardiner and . A couple famous wildlife viewing locations in Yellowstone are Lamar Valley and Hayden Valley, with herds of bison and elk and packs of wolves. Moose are usually found near rivers or lakes around Yellowstone and are more common near the southern part of the park. Bears can be found all over the park; check with the information specialists at Yellowstone Forever or the Visitor Centers in Yellowstone for updated sightings of bears, wolves, and most types of wildlife.

QUESTION: How much do passes to Yellowstone cost? ANSWER: Entrance fees vary, and specifics can be found at the ’s website: https://www. nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/fees.htm. For seven days, a standard vehicle can purchase a pass for $35, a motor- cycle can purchase a pass for $30, and an individual entering by foot or bicycle can purchase a pass for $20. Annual passes cost $70 and last a full year.

QUESTION: Where can I go in Yellowstone that has less people? ANSWER: Yellowstone’s Northern Range, while often busy, is typically a little less crowded than the southern parts of the park. It is a beautiful place to see wildlife, mountains, rivers, and lakes. The best advice for avert- ing the crowds is to get out on the trails or in the backcountry for some hiking; there are several unique and gorgeous locations to explore without having to fight for parking.

QUESTION: What is the significance of the Roosevelt Arch? ANSWER: A man named Hiram M. Chittenden, from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was dissatisfied with the entrance to Yellowstone in the first three decades of the park’s existence. He thought it deserved a much more grand, exciting entrance point. In 1903, the arch was dedicated by Theodore Roosevelt, who laid the cornerstone of the structure (which can be seen in photos at the Gardiner Chamber of Commerce). It be- came an important destination to visitors from around the world, who would arrive in Gardiner on the train at the station just below the Arch, which has since been replaced with the library.

QUESTION: What’s good to eat in town? ANSWER: It depends on what you’re in the mood for. Gardiner has options ranging from burgers and pizza to locally caught fish and huckleberry crème brûlée. Be sure to stop into the Gardiner Chamber of Com- merce and Visitor Center to browse menus and ask more specific questions. In our opinion, you can’t go wrong at any of the restaurants here in town.

8 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

QUESTION: Where are some good scenic drives outside of the park? ANSWER: One option for a nice scenic drive in the area is going through Paradise Valley along Highway 89 and the . While the views along the highway are stunning, for an even more scenic route turn onto East River Road, which begins about 22 miles north of Gardiner and continues further north to- ward Livingston. This takes you through the trees and along creeks flowing into the river, with a lower speed limit to ensure that you have a better chance of seeing the views and wildlife. Another great drive nearby is up Jardine Road, which takes you northeast of Gardiner and gives you terrific sights of both the town and Yellowstone. From several parts of the road, you can look south through the valley and see the white trav- ertine terraces of Mammoth Hot Springs. Continue along the road and you will find many National Forest Service roads that take you into the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness.

QUESTION: What do people do for fun in Gardiner? ANSWER: We revel in the fact that Gardiner is vacant of movie theaters and bowling alleys. The best way to spend time in Gardiner is to take advantage of the recreation opportunities in town. Several companies offer rafting trips, horseback trail rides, or zipline adventures. If these activities are a little too intimidating, or if you’re travelling on a budget, we suggest hiking trails like the OTO ranch, just outside of town. You could also head north to one of the available hot spring options, Yellowstone Hot Springs at Corwin Springs or Chi- co Hot Springs near Emigrant (see page 13).

QUESTION: Can I rent bear spray? ANSWER: You can! There aren’t any locations in Gardiner that rent bear spray, but if you head into Yellow- stone and visit the offices at Canyon Village you will be able to rent some.

QUESTION: What time of day should I go into Yellowstone to avoid the line? ANSWER: The earlier the better! The line starts to grow around 9:30 am and won’t shorten much until around noon. You could always go in for an afternoon or evening adventure, but the morning light in the park is so beautiful, and early morning is the best time to view the wildlife.

QUESTION: Does the north entrance to Yellowstone ever close? ANSWER: No, you will always be able to get in and out of the park.
