The Skillwise Journal 2018 Issue 89 www.skillwise.org.nz The SkillWise Journal The SkillWise Journal I ssue 89 Pa ge 2 Family Forum #4 We held our fourth forum with the people we support and their families/support staff on May 1st, this time with people who live in the central suburbs. Thanks to all who came and participated in the discussions. It feels like the changes we are making to work in a person- driven way are gaining momentum, and it was great to hear about the exciting community opportunities people are already involved in. Amarillo, Texas. Dunedin model railway exhibition 2018 Over the weekend of 11th to 14th May the SkillWise model making group again attended the Dunedin train show at the Taieri Bowling Club in Mosgiel. Gary Buchanan, John Pike, Kevin Horne and Stephen Cooper along with Gavin and Stan and volunteers Doug and Paul set up and operated the layout using USA Free-Mo modules. We had the largest layout at 12m long. It performed well over the weekend and we had some nice comments from the public, including two Kiwis who had lived in Amarillo and a woman from Texas who thought we had travelled from Texas rather than Christchurch! Some of us also helped Kevin Prince operate his East German layout. After the show closed on Saturday we visited the American Modular Groups’ clubroom and layout, then attended the dinner for the organisers, exhibitors and traders at the Holy Cross Centre restaurant. An excellent meal with huge portions so big that nobody went back for seconds! Gavin is moving on from SkillWise to progress his career in a new organisation. Gavin worked at SkillWise as our Operations Manager (and as a Community Facilitator before that) for over 12 years! Gavin’s passion in the disability community is second to none. He will be missed dearly at SkillWise. He will still be around Christchurch and will keep in touch at SkillWise events in future. He is greatly respected by the entire SkillWise community and we wish him all the very best in his future adventures. Thank you for your tireless effort and enthusiasm in and around the office. Mitchell was at the forefront of all the action for the Giants, putting Radio Show his body on the line several times for the good of his team. on the last Leon and Kerry made some crucial interceptions for the Thursday of Dragons that kept the score tight. All South Island provinces have made the trip to our district for this week. As well as the players, it is a warm welcome to the coaches, managers, parents, supporters, administrators and sponsors of these teams. This is the fifth occasion that Canterbury Country has hosted this tournament and we look forward to another wonderful week of cricket, and the building of friendships. From this tournament over the past 57 years a number of players have gone up through the age grade groups to represent their provinces, and even on to the highest honours of representing New Zealand. Whilst it is healthy for players to have aspirations and dreams of playing for the Blackcaps in the future, I’d like to encourage all adults involved with this tournament to positively praise the effort the players put into matches throughout the week, rather than reverting to focusing on performances, stats and results. Playing in this tournament gives players the opportunity to represent their province and to play alongside players from other clubs or schools. The friendships formed in this tournament will hopefully be long standing as the players continue to play cricket into the future. A tournament such as this could not be run without the help of a large number of volunteers.

    Developing Teamwork at New Zealand Cricket1 A programme to improve team working in the New Zealand men’s cricket team, the BlackCaps, hit the headlines in 2008 following the resignation of coach John Bracewell. Leading Teams New Zealand was an organisation which aimed to improve team performance through a range of teamwork and leadership programmes. In addition to working with New Zealand Cricket, Leading Teams had worked with Super 14 rugby teams the Hurricanes and Chiefs, as well as the New Zealand Breakers basketball team. Leading Teams was hired by John Bracewell, who stood down in November 2008 and was replaced by Northern Districts coach Andy Moles. Immediately following his appointment, Moles announced that the role of Leading Teams had been placed “under review” and would be “diluted”.2 Leading Teams aimed to “align teams by creating shared vision and behaviours that empower all members of the team to engage in open dialogue. We develop leaders who model and defend the behaviours that the team identifies as non-negotiable.”3 Its Performance Improvement Programme (PIP), which it said was a “unique and visionary training methodology”,4 covered five key areas: coaching and mentoring, effective leadership, aligning teams, personal development and organisational development. Aligning teams involved understanding how culture and values affected team performance, analysing the current culture of the team, creating a desired vision and developing desired behaviour within the team. It also involved peer performance assessment and it was this aspect which created controversy within the BlackCaps. Former BlackCap Craig McMillan said that during the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies, five players would be assessed after each game.
