st Black Caps – 1 ODI vs India - Mojo Recovered!

WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON/EVENING;

Photo – ESPNcricinfo saw us home - 109*, his 20th ODI – Black Caps a 4 win

It didm’t look promising right thrrough the afternoon as India amassed 347/4 and our bowlers were taken apart and shaken like rag dolls by Kohli, Iyer and Rahul. Southee had looked so good in his opening overs, late away swing and he even bowled a maiden but, to have 85 runs taken off his 10 overs ……. – the worst figures of his long career?

Then the chase – a mate texted me, “can we do it?” and I replied “….. unlikely!” Though I did remember back to March 2007 when, against Mike Hussey’s Australians at Seddon Park, we ran down their 346/5 which included Matthew Hayden’s 181*, scoring 350 to win by 1 wicket. I was there (Don Cameron, the renowned journalist, had returned to Auckland when NZ had been 41/4 and heard the result when he reached the top of the Bombay Hills) – one of the greatest game I have been lucky enough to see. Our heros - (present BC’s coach – 51 of 40, Craig McMillan 117 off 96 and Brendan McCullum who hit the 3rd to last ball off Bracken for 6, 86 off 91 balls. Our no. 11, , 0*, didn’t have to face a ball. A series whitewash to NZ – 3 nil – and Mike Hussey never captained Australia again. Oh yes – the Aussies figures, Mitchell Johnston 3/81 off 10 and Shane Watson 2/88 off 10 – comparable to Southees!

Last night, what an amazing effort after the disapointments of recent weeks. Great to see Nicholls and Latham back in the team and performing. And don’t forget the good start given by Guptill –

And the pitch – per Sidharth Monga in ESPNcricinfo “You might want to criticise a pitch as too batting-friendly if it allows 348 to be chased down with consummate ease, but there was a bit in it for the bowlers. In the afternoon, there was just enough nip for and to bowl 16 overs for just 93 runs and pick up one wicket.” Rather more positive that George Dobell’s caustic remarks for the same organisation a few weeks back that the Seddon Park pitch “was klling ”.

ICC Under 19 World Cup

Going a little below the radar, NZ, 211/8 (50), played Bangladesh, 215/4 (44.1), last night – a loss by 6 . This was the 2nd Semi Final, and Bangladesh will now play India in the Final on Sunday– India having beaten Pakistan earlier in the other Semi Final. NZ had done exceptionally well to make the Semi Final and the Team lauded for it’s sportsmanship along the way. They had lost the toss and had to bat first on a rain affected pitch. N Lidstone (Christs College/Canterbury) 44 and B Wheeler-Greenall (King’s High/Otago) 75* batted well for us. Mahmudul Hasan Joy hit 100 for the victors. NZ now play Pakistan on Saturday for 3rd place. Of note is that the host country, , was beaten by Afghanistan for 7th place – a sign for the future of cricket?

AND MORE HEROICS FOR THE CLUB – TWO BATSMEN HAVING AN OUTSTANDING SEASON:

FLYNN McGREGOR-SUMPTER – a 6 to go to 96! And then his 100 - Flynn scored 116 vs Howick Pakuranga last Sunday Flynn, after scoring three 90s earlier, scored his maiden Premier century on 25 Jan., top scored with 33 vs Takapuna in the T20 Final and, last Sunday, hit a seecond century - 116 vs Howick Pakuranga. Note that Parnell leads the Table with 59 points to Takapuna, 54, Auckland University 50, Cornwall 42 etc. Parnell meets Takapuna over the next two Saturdays at Shore Road Reserve – please, come down and support our Team!

DAY 1. A brilliant start with Josh Fisher dismissing Young, Walsh and Barnard with just 17 on the board. But their skipper, Morrison, dug in with Winn and the next wicket didn’t fall until Nikith had Winn caught behind for 125 and the score 200/4. Morrison soldiered on but missed his ton when Aniket had him caught for 86 and the total 255/7. The innings finaly ended just on stumps leaveing us a good chase.

DAY 2. Needing 333, Ben Rae and Flynn faced up to the very experience attack of Grobbelaar and Botadra. Ben was caught behind early of Grobbelaar and Botadra snaffled Andy Lane at 67.

Then, with Olli joining Flynn, we consolidated – they took the total to 203 when Olli was adjudged lbw for an invaluable 61.and Flynn’s superb innings ended at 222 when Walsh bowled a long hop and Flynn was strangled down leg. Skipper Brad was now in full control and, whilst Aniket also lost his wicket to Walsh – 255/5, Josh gave top support. Then, after 80 overs and the new ball taken, Botadra had Brad caught behind – 308/6 and just 25 needed. Grobbelaar clean bowled Fanie almost immediately, 311/7, and then Harry was caught behind – shades of the Black Caps!!! – 315/8 and nerves jangled! But Josh held firm and was joined by Lockie – no alarums, and the two dealt with some very aggressive bowling most competantly. The last few runs were scored without hesitation and, finally, Lockie pulled Grobbelaar for 4 and 1st innings points were ours.

Then the news that Cornwall had inflicted a 1st innings loss on Takapuna so Parnell now tops the Table.

Openers Ollie (left) and Josh – Josh took 3 quick wickets to have HP reeling at 17/3 but Morrison & Winn then added 183 for the 3rd wicket

Another look at Josh who took 3 wickets and of Fanie who, like Lockie, bowled without success

Nikith, his 18th birthday is not for another couple of weeks, picked up one wicket – 1/55 off 13 overs

Chasing Howick Pakuranga’s 351, Ollie (above) scored 61 and assisted Flynn in a partnership of 136 for the 3rd wicket

Josh (above left) came in at 252/5 and was not out 31 when when the win was achieved. He shared parnerships of 86 with Brad and 27 unbroken with Lockie (above right) for the 9th wicket

Man of the Match – the evergreen Rudi Bisschoff He had already scored 122 and then, in the match, took 4/21 off 17 overs Skippers Report follows after these photos

Tim Konara (left) and Mike Araujo

Jack Dohnt (left) and Jack Middleton

Joe Baron (left) and Kelly Lunow Haldane SKIPPER JAMES PARTRIDGE REPORTING: We entered the match expecting a tight tussle with the boys from Birkenhead after seeing them off in the One Dayer earlier in the season. It was a very hot day and we lost the toss, and to our surprise we were sent in. We were 48 for 4 after some spectacular catches from the Birkenhead boys, before Lunow-Haldane came to the wicket to join Bisschoff for a 124 run partnership. Following this partnership wickets fell at regular intervals to close the innings 243 all out. We took early wickets to have Birkenhead on the ropes to finish the day with only 40 runs on the board 7 wickets down. Day 2 saw Birkenhead return and with them came some a strengthen batting line-up, this saw them put on 62 runs before they were dismissed by some tight bowling of Bisschoff. This left them 141 behind on the first innings, so we enforced the follow on. This decision paid instant dividends with Penrose taking a wicket with the forth ball of the innings. However after this Birkenhead fought back with a 86 run send wicket partnership and 45 run third wicket partnership to be 3 down for 132, with the Prunes having second thoughts of enforcing the follow on having already been in the field for 50 overs on a hot sunny day. Then the tide turned with the introduction of BAron who took 3 wickets in his next two overs to have them 6 down for 146. Some tight bowling from Bisschoff, Redwood and Dohnt saw them take wickets and finish Birkenhead off all out for 185. With 10 overs left in the day the Prunes had to score 45 runs to complete a great outright win, our stand in captain Konara decided he’d open the batting with our regular opener Dohnt. Unfortunately Dohnt got out without scoring chasing quick runs. This brought Redwood to the crease to partner Konara who played his normal explosive batting smashing a quick fire 30 and carry us to victory with more than 5 overs left in the day. Bisschoff was a stand out in this match taking 4 wickets for 21 runs off 17 overs and scoring 122 runs however what the score board does not show was how well we were in the field taking our catches and pressuring the batsmen. It was a team effort with all and sundry taking part in this win, the Prunes that didn’t play came along and supported the boys. Thanks should go out to the Thirds who also came along and supported us late on the second day, it shows how we are the club all other clubs want to be.

Hong Kong CC – Reciprocity Agreement and BBQ, 23 Jan,

First, on Thursday, the Reciprocity Agreement was signed by the Blazers – George Lamplough (above left) for HKCC,PCC Chairman, Craig Presland and our President (wearing his NZ Over 60s blazer). Details of the Agreement wil be advised shortly. Then, George presented Parnell CC a photograph of the Hong Kong CC

And the Game Friday, 24 Jan.

The two Teams HKCC and PCC HONG KONG CC 155/8 vs PARNELL CC 125/10 Win to HKCC by 30 runs Some of the visitors plus John Nicol ‘keeping, Greg James bowling and Paul Sylvia umpiring:

A very pleasant day’s cricket played in great spirit. The HK team rather stronger than ours. In trying to chase down their 155, Matt James, Giacomo Lamplough and Rudi Bisschoff all got to double figures but no more! Phil Horne then played a lone hand for 38, the winners were toasted, presentations made and, following very necessary hydration, the majority debunked to Eden Park to watch the Black Caps being spanked in the 1st T20I vs India. Final thanks – Paul Sylvia, wonderful to see you, thank you indeed for umpiring, something hugely appreciated by both teams. vs Mumbai Jaguars Tuesday, 28 Jan. PARNELL INVITATION XI 165/10 vs MUMBAI JAGUARS 168/4 at Shore Road 2a. RESULT: Mumbai Jaguars won by 6 wickets

Phil Horne, backbone of Parnell’s batting in both games – 38 vs HKCC and 36* vs Mumbai Jaguars Parnell batted first and, despite losing Callum McCarthy early, Matt James got us off to a good start hitting 45. Excellent support came from invitees Bill Fowler (25) and Julian Price (20) and Ashwin Haran (11) and Rod Smith (14) chipped in usefully but, again, Phil Horne, with 36 not out, rescued proceedings and got us through to 165. Mumbai Jaguars made no race of the chase losing only 4 wickets. Very good for Parnell to host a team from the Sub Continent and special thanks to Stu Stockdale, of the Melbourne CC and Chairman of the Australian Taverners, who facilitated the visit with our President, Rod Smith. Last, but not least, thank you Keith Rawlings and Marc O’Gorman for umpiring – again, hugely appreciated by the players!
