I was there (Don Cameron, the renowned journalist, had returned to Auckland when NZ had been 41/4 and heard the result when he reached the top of the Bombay Hills) – one of the greatest game I have been lucky enough to see. Our heros - Peter Fulton (present BC’s batting coach – 51 of 40, Craig McMillan 117 off 96 and Brendan McCullum who hit the 3rd to last ball off Bracken for 6, 86 not out off 91 balls. Our no. 11, Jeetan Patel, 0*, didn’t have to face a ball. A series whitewash to NZ – 3 nil – and Mike Hussey never captained Australia again. Oh yes – the Aussies bowling figures, Mitchell Johnston 3/81 off 10 and Shane Watson 2/88 off 10 – comparable to Southees! Last night, what an amazing effort after the disapointments of recent weeks. Great to see Nicholls and Latham back in the team and performing. This was the 2nd Semi Final, and Bangladesh will now play India in the Final on Sunday– India having beaten Pakistan earlier in the other Semi Final. NZ had done exceptionally well to make the Semi Final and the Team lauded for it’s sportsmanship along the way. They had lost the toss and had to bat first on a rain affected pitch. N Lidstone (Christs College/Canterbury) 44 and B Wheeler-Greenall (King’s High/Otago) 75* batted well for us. Mahmudul Hasan Joy hit 100 for the victors. NZ now play Pakistan on Saturday for 3rd place. Of note is that the host country, South Africa, was beaten by Afghanistan for 7th place – a sign for the future of cricket? DAY 1. A brilliant start with Josh Fisher dismissing Young, Walsh and Barnard with just 17 on the board. But their skipper, Morrison, dug in with Winn and the next wicket didn’t fall until Nikith had Winn caught behind for 125 and the score 200/4. Morrison soldiered on but missed his ton when Aniket had him caught for 86 and the total 255/7. The innings finaly ended just on stumps leaveing us a good chase. DAY 2. Needing 333, Ben Rae and Flynn faced up to the very experience attack of Grobbelaar and Botadra. Ben was caught behind early of Grobbelaar and Botadra snaffled Andy Lane at 67. Then, with Olli joining Flynn, we consolidated – they took the total to 203 when Olli was adjudged lbw for an invaluable 61.and Flynn’s superb innings ended at 222 when Walsh bowled a long hop and Flynn was strangled down leg. Skipper Brad was now in full control and, whilst Aniket also lost his wicket to Walsh – 255/5, Josh gave top support. Then, after 80 overs and the new ball taken, Botadra had Brad caught behind – 308/6 and just 25 needed. Grobbelaar clean bowled Fanie almost immediately, 311/7, and then Harry was caught behind – shades of the Black Caps!!! – 315/8 and nerves jangled! But Josh held firm and was joined by Lockie – no alarums, and the two dealt with some very aggressive bowling most competantly. The last few runs were scored without hesitation and, finally, Lockie pulled Grobbelaar for 4 and 1st innings points were ours. Then the news that Cornwall had inflicted a 1st innings loss on Takapuna so Parnell now tops the Table.
