Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.181: Black Caps – Mojo Restored? And Chappie, back in the Black Caps, Lockie Back for Parnell MARK CHAPMAN Back in the Black Caps’ squad in the absence of Kane Williamson (injured, inflamed AC shoulder joint) Mark’s last two innings: 30 Jan. 110* for NZ A vs India A – Limited Overs (50/50) 26 Jan. 114 for NZ A vs India A - 1st Class LOCKIE FERGUSON - ON THE MEND Back for Parnell and unleashed against Suburbs NL on 25 Jan. 5o 1m 13r 1w And, as above, vs Howick Pakuranga, 1 & 2 Feb. 11o 4m 35r 0w – easing back into match fitness. st Black Caps – 1 ODI vs India - Mojo Recovered! WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON/EVENING; Photo – ESPNcricinfo Ross Taylor saw us home - 109*, his 20th ODI century – Black Caps a 4 wicket win It didm’t look promising right thrrough the afternoon as India amassed 347/4 and our bowlers were taken apart and shaken like rag dolls by Kohli, Iyer and Rahul. Southee had looked so good in his opening overs, late away swing and he even bowled a maiden but, to have 85 runs taken off his 10 overs ……. – the worst figures of his long career? Then the chase – a mate texted me, “can we do it?” and I replied “….. unlikely!” Though I did remember back to March 2007 when, against Mike Hussey’s Australians at Seddon Park, we ran down their 346/5 which included Matthew Hayden’s 181*, scoring 350 to win by 1 wicket. I was there (Don Cameron, the renowned journalist, had returned to Auckland when NZ had been 41/4 and heard the result when he reached the top of the Bombay Hills) – one of the greatest game I have been lucky enough to see. Our heros - Peter Fulton (present BC’s batting coach – 51 of 40, Craig McMillan 117 off 96 and Brendan McCullum who hit the 3rd to last ball off Bracken for 6, 86 not out off 91 balls. Our no. 11, Jeetan Patel, 0*, didn’t have to face a ball. A series whitewash to NZ – 3 nil – and Mike Hussey never captained Australia again. Oh yes – the Aussies bowling figures, Mitchell Johnston 3/81 off 10 and Shane Watson 2/88 off 10 – comparable to Southees! Last night, what an amazing effort after the disapointments of recent weeks. Great to see Nicholls and Latham back in the team and performing. And don’t forget the good start given by Guptill – And the pitch – per Sidharth Monga in ESPNcricinfo “You might want to criticise a pitch as too batting-friendly if it allows 348 to be chased down with consummate ease, but there was a bit in it for the bowlers. In the afternoon, there was just enough nip for Colin de Grandhomme and James Neesham to bowl 16 overs for just 93 runs and pick up one wicket.” Rather more positive that George Dobell’s caustic remarks for the same organisation a few weeks back that the Seddon Park pitch “was klling Test cricket”. SEE YOU AT EDEN PARK ON SATURDAY FOR THE 2ND ODI – THE RUGBY POSTS, ERECTED A WEEK AGO, WILL HAVE BEEN REMOVED! ICC Under 19 World Cup Going a little below the radar, NZ, 211/8 (50), played Bangladesh, 215/4 (44.1), last night – a loss by 6 wickets. This was the 2nd Semi Final, and Bangladesh will now play India in the Final on Sunday– India having beaten Pakistan earlier in the other Semi Final. NZ had done exceptionally well to make the Semi Final and the Team lauded for it’s sportsmanship along the way. They had lost the toss and had to bat first on a rain affected pitch. N Lidstone (Christs College/Canterbury) 44 and B Wheeler-Greenall (King’s High/Otago) 75* batted well for us. Mahmudul Hasan Joy hit 100 for the victors. NZ now play Pakistan on Saturday for 3rd place. Of note is that the host country, South Africa, was beaten by Afghanistan for 7th place – a sign for the future of cricket? AND MORE HEROICS FOR THE CLUB – TWO BATSMEN HAVING AN OUTSTANDING SEASON: FLYNN McGREGOR-SUMPTER – a 6 to go to 96! And then his 100 - Flynn scored 116 vs Howick Pakuranga last Sunday Flynn, after scoring three 90s earlier, scored his maiden Premier century on 25 Jan., top scored with 33 vs Takapuna in the T20 Final and, last Sunday, hit a seecond century - 116 vs Howick Pakuranga. He top scored for the Parnell Schoolboy XI that played Trinidad & Tobago Colts and, last season was adjudged Parnell’s “Most Promising Batsman” and received the WH Giles Award. From being a promising player he is blossoming - we look forward to Flynn’s futher successes! BRAD RODDEN – as well as his 107* vs Suburbs NL & 61 vs Howick Pak., hit 94 for Auckland A last week This season he has scored: Premier Grade Hedley Howarth 5i 1no 285r 110hs 71.25ave Jeff Crowe 5 2 267 107* 89.00 T20 8 1 158 33* 22.57 Total 18 4 810 110 57.86 ACA MEN’S PREMIER GRADE - HEDLEY HOWARTH TROPHY RESUMES Round 4: .Sat. & Sun., 1 & 2 February HOWICK PAKURANGA vs PARNELL at Lloyd Elsmore Park 1 HOWICK PAKURANGA 332/9 dec. DAY 1. A brilliant start with Josh Fisher dismissing Young, Walsh and Barnard with just 17 on the board. But their skipper, Morrison, dug in with Winn and the next wicket didn’t fall until Nikith had Winn caught behind for 125 and the score 200/4. Morrison soldiered on but missed his ton when Aniket had him caught for 86 and the total 255/7. The innings finaly ended just on stumps leaveing us a good chase. DAY 2. Needing 333, Ben Rae and Flynn faced up to the very experience attack of Grobbelaar and Botadra. Ben was caught behind early of Grobbelaar and Botadra snaffled Andy Lane at 67. Then, with Olli joining Flynn, we consolidated – they took the total to 203 when Olli was adjudged lbw for an invaluable 61.and Flynn’s superb innings ended at 222 when Walsh bowled a long hop and Flynn was strangled down leg. Skipper Brad was now in full control and, whilst Aniket also lost his wicket to Walsh – 255/5, Josh gave top support. Then, after 80 overs and the new ball taken, Botadra had Brad caught behind – 308/6 and just 25 needed. Grobbelaar clean bowled Fanie almost immediately, 311/7, and then Harry was caught behind – shades of the Black Caps!!! – 315/8 and nerves jangled! But Josh held firm and was joined by Lockie – no alarums, and the two dealt with some very aggressive bowling most competantly. The last few runs were scored without hesitation and, finally, Lockie pulled Grobbelaar for 4 and 1st innings points were ours. Then the news that Cornwall had inflicted a 1st innings loss on Takapuna so Parnell now tops the Table. Openers Ollie (left) and Josh – Josh took 3 quick wickets to have HP reeling at 17/3 but Morrison & Winn then added 183 for the 3rd wicket Another look at Josh who took 3 wickets and of Fanie who, like Lockie, bowled without success Nikith, his 18th birthday is not for another couple of weeks, picked up one wicket – 1/55 off 13 overs Chasing Howick Pakuranga’s 351, Ollie (above) scored 61 and assisted Flynn in a partnership of 136 for the 3rd wicket Josh (above left) came in at 252/5 and was not out 31 when when the win was achieved. He shared parnerships of 86 with Brad and 27 unbroken with Lockie (above right) for the 9th wicket Women’s Premier Grade No Women’s Premier Grade games were played at Anniversary weekend Men’s Premier Reserves – President’s Cup, Two Day Major Championship Round 3. 25 Jan. & 1 Feb.
