56th SOUTH ISLAND PRIMARY SCHOOLS CRICKET TOURNAMENT 7TH – 11TH January 2019 Oamaru, North Otago Oamaru Nobody does it better than LJ Hooker 1 WELCOME A very warm welcome to Oamaru for the 56th South Island Primary Schools Tournament to all the players, coaches, managers, whanau and friends of the 14 participating teams. This is a tournament rich with history and this years addition sees a number of significant changes to the format in response to the new Age & Stage policy implemented by New Zealand Cricket. This is a new era for the tournament, as the shorter formats of the game will be played. This tournament has seen a number of players advance onto 1st Class cricket and International careers and it is likely some of the players playing in this year's tournament will do the same. This tournament is about bringing the best players from each of the districts from the South Island together for a week of competition and for players and supporters to enjoy the great game of cricket and each others company. A massive thank you to all of the volunteers from throughout the North Otago region who have given up their time to enable us to put this tournament on. This includes members of the organising committee, groundsman, ground managers and umpires. Without their help this tournament would not be possible. We are very thankful to all of our sponsors whose generous contributions have provided the necessary financial support required to make the tournament viable. This is especially the case for our major sponsors, LJ Hooker and Crombie & Lockwood. If there is an opportunity to support our sponsors we ask that you do so. To our friends at Otago and Canterbury cricket who continue to support this very important tournament - we thank you. Finally, good luck to every team and I look forward to seeing you around the grounds during the week Justin Fowler Chairman North Otago Cricket SIPST Organising Committee 2019 2 Contents WELCOME 2 Contents 3 Supporters 3 Tournament Information 4 Tournament News, Scoring, Social 4 HISTORY 5 Draw & Grounds 6 Ground Locations 6 Tournament Rules 7 TEAM LISTS 10 Tournament Winners: Sir Jack Newman Trophy 12 Eastern Southland Fielding Trophy Winners 13 Tournament Records 14 Tournament Century Makers 14 Tournament Hat-Tricks 16 Representative Players 17 Future Tournament & Draws 18 Points Table 19 General Contacts 20 Major Financial Partners 3 Tournament Information EVENTS SUNDAY 6th Jan HOURS OF PLAY Team Photos from 2.45pm Monday - Wednesday Centennial Oval 1st game Scorers Meeting 4.15pm 10.15am – 11.35am (Session 1) Centennial Oval, Payne Pavilion 11.35am – 11.55am (Interval) 11.55am – 1.15pm Session 2 Opening Ceremony 5pm Centennial Oval 2nd game (If wet St Kevin’s College Auditorium) 2.30pm – 3.50pm (Session 3) 3.50pm – 4.10pm Interval Team Coach/Managers Meeting 5.30pm 4.10pm – 5.30pm (Session 4) Centennial Oval, Payne Pavilion THURSDAY 11th Jan Thursday - Friday Team Coach/Managers Meeting 7pm Payne Pavilion, Centennial Oval Session 1 10.15am – 20 overs 1st Innings FRIDAY 15th Jan Drinks approx. 11.35am – 5 minutes Closing Ceremony 5.00pm Centennial Oval Session 2 11.40am – completion of 1st innings Lunch approx. 1.15pm – 45 minutes Session 3 2.15pm approx – 20 overs 2nd Innings CONTACTS Drinks approx 3.35pm - 5 minutes Justin Fowler Session 4 Chairman/Grounds Convenor 3.40pm – completion of 2nd innings Phone: 027 426 5370 Peter Cameron Tournament Controller Phone: 027 434 5424 Jacque Crombie NOCA Administration Manager Phone: 021 501 539 4 Tournament News, Scoring, Social TOURNAMENT RULES, DRAWS & POINTS TABLES All information about the tournament rules, draw and points tables can be found on the North Otago Cricket website LIVE SCORING Live scoring for the SIPST tournament can also be found on CricHQ at the following link; https://www.crichq.com/manage/competitions/324 FACEBOOK Photos, stories and features will appear on the North Otago Cricket Facebook page and we ask you to share your photos on here during the tournament too. 5 HISTORY WELCOME TO THIS 56TH SOUTH ISLAND TOURNAMENT AT NORTH OTAGO. Last Century In 1972 Oamaru hosted the 9th SIPST Tournament. The 12 teams yielded 7234 runs for 529 wickets @ 13.67 rpw and won by Canterbury. Appearing were Richard HOSKINS, Mike FULHAM, Alan DEVLIN, Wayne HODGSON, Bruce BLAIR, Geoff MacDONALD, and Justin BOYLE. BOYLE took pride of place for he claimed ALL 10 WICKETS for 37 against Ashburton. The stumps remained intact, catches taken!! When North Otago played Ashburton, Richard Hoskin made 49 in 124, just 20 runs short. Next was Canterbury declaring 201/7 only to close down North Otago with 61, then against Buller they had the luxury of declaring 159/9, the reply well-short with 42 as Ross Wilson captured 6/20. Next was Southland Country a 42 by Barry Roberts and 29 by Ross Ovens declared 159/7, the reply only 71, and in the Marlborough game, having 134 as Barry Robertson took 4/23 and headed for another win making 149, its 6th win from 27. 14 teams appeared at Oamaru in 1983, making 7782 runs for the loss of 627 wickets @ 12.4 rwp. Several centuries and hat-tricks happened and 4 teams shared the title which prompted a fresh round-robin or rotational draw to be compiled as all teams wished to play each other. A record 732 wickets was achieved and eleven outrights happened while the local teams struggled to keep up. At the 32nd tourney in 1995, the yield grew to 9598 runs for the loss of 732 wickets @13.11 rpw. Players to stand out included Chris Cairns, Dayle Shackel, Chris Harris, David Mills, Hamish Drennan and Troy Scanlon. The 44th tourney in 2007, had startling rewards. Players in form were Ben Ward, Greg Croudis, Tim McGoldrick, Daniel Miller, Cameron Grubb, Theo van Woerkom, Whare Morrell, Jack Harper, Matt Tait, Dillon Akehurst, Nick Galwey, Matt Swift, The Day lads, Tom Gooday and Hannah Davies. Hat-tricks boomed including the Matt Tait 5/17 Mid Canterbury vrs Nelson and Cameron Grubb 7/1 North Otago vrs West Coast. The yield was 6580 runs for 528 wkts @ 12.46 rwp. Mid Canterbury were unbeaten with Ben Ward scoring 104 not out for Mid Canterbury vrs Marlborough. At the 52nd tourney in 2013, a fresh grass record was scored by North Otago batsman Llewlyn Johnston with a fabulous 159 from 134 balls, crafting 5/6s and 18/4s against Marlborough at Elmwood Park. North Otago cruised to 259/9 declared. Johnson scored a massive 311 runs for North Otago at the Tournament. Johnston’s 159 beat the previous best score of 152 scored by Craig McMillan against Central Otago at Gore.
