PRESIDENTS REPORT After four seasons of hard work our Ladies Second Grade side won their grade in convincing style. Each year they have continued to develop and even with the loss of several players they proved they are a good consistent all round team with a great team spirit. Congratulations must go to everyone involved with the side over the last few seasons - the players for their hard work; the coaches Ian Hill, Tracy Henderson and Kevin McGowan for their efforts; and to everyone else who supported the side. We wish them well in the upcoming season hopefully in the Senior Competition. Again this season there a large group of people I would like to thank. - the committee for their efforts over the season - the Friends for their efforts in raising funds for the club - Brian and Doug for all their hard work as groundsmen - Brian for his work behind the scenes in the clubrooms - Ivan and his committee for their efforts with the juniors and secondary schools - Tracy and Kevin for their efforts with coaching - Bert for his time with raffles and quiz nights - Tom for his wisdom and work on the CCA men’s advisory group - Ian for his work on the CCA women’s advisory group - All the captains for their hard work and support - And to everyone who helped out in some way during the season. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Glen Hooper for all his efforts with coaching and development in the club. In his first season as coach in the club there has been a big improvement in the development and results and look forward to continued improvement next season. I would also like to thank our sponsors – The Sandridge and Tuskers for their continued support and use of their facilities. It is very much appreciated. Please support our sponsors where possible. Throughout the season I had the opportunity to see the development of our secondary schools sides especially at the under 18 level - several players having the opportunity to play in our third grade men’s side around Christmas. This school's competition has enabled players to continue to develop their game while still at school and get the opportunity to play in the senior side of the club. Next season will see the first group of players cross into the senior side of the club to play in the men’s competition thus giving them the chance to play to new heights. This season became very frustrating for everyone as it developed playing wise. Not only with the byes and the rain on Fridays affecting Saturdays but also with the constant calls I was getting from Canterbury Cricket on Fridays stating opposition teams were defaulting against us. At one stage before Christmas over the space of five weeks all our men’s teams (excluding seniors) had defaults. Combined with byes or wet weather, sides were missing out on cricket for several weeks in a row. I must thank everyone for their patience and hope these problems are addressed by the CCA over the winter months. This season we were fortunate to have the services of Jamil Hassan from England. He arrived on Friday before the start of the season direct from England, went out and scored a century in his first innings for the club on Saturday and played in the Press Knockout on Sunday and then proceeded to sleep for the next week. He got on well with everyone and became a popular member of the club. When he wasn’t playing cricket he was involved with coaching at the junior and secondary school level where he impressed with his coaching skills. We hopefully look forward to his return next season. This season saw a very loose amalgamation between Sydenham and Southern Districts. Each club continuing to run as a separate identity. The end of season prizegiving saw both clubs bought together for this function. Next season will see things move one step closer with the combining of practice facilities and social functions. I would like to thank Dave and the Friends for their efforts on the amalgamation, which will benefit both clubs down the line. Finally I would like to thank everyone for their continued support over the season and look forward to seeing you all back for the 2000-2001 season Andrew Chisnall President CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT It was a year of some pretty substantial losses in the club – although not in terms of games. It started with Kath leaving the club and committee to go into the airforce. That was followed by Dean “Blobby” Fraser leaving mid season to go to Australia, which was a huge blow to the guys in 3rd grade and to the entire club. Jamil joined us from England early in the season and took an immediate liking to our beer, fitting in very well and playing some excellent cricket. A real highlight of the season came from the ever-improving Women’s team. They finished up winning the women’s grade and this year will be moving up to 1st grade to hopefully do the same there. They did this without the help of Chontelle Tie who packed up and went to Sydney to enjoy the warmer weather…..the social events will never be the same.
