PRESIDENTS REPORT

After four seasons of hard work our Ladies Second Grade side won their grade in convincing style. Each year they have continued to develop and even with the loss of several players they proved they are a good consistent all round team with a great team spirit. Congratulations must go to everyone involved with the side over the last few seasons - the players for their hard work; the coaches Ian Hill, Tracy Henderson and Kevin McGowan for their efforts; and to everyone else who supported the side. We wish them well in the upcoming season hopefully in the Senior Competition.

Again this season there a large group of people I would like to thank. - the committee for their efforts over the season - the Friends for their efforts in raising funds for the club - Brian and Doug for all their hard work as groundsmen - Brian for his work behind the scenes in the clubrooms - Ivan and his committee for their efforts with the juniors and secondary schools - Tracy and Kevin for their efforts with coaching - Bert for his time with raffles and quiz nights - Tom for his wisdom and work on the CCA men’s advisory group - Ian for his work on the CCA women’s advisory group - All the captains for their hard work and support - And to everyone who helped out in some way during the season.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Glen Hooper for all his efforts with coaching and development in the club. In his first season as coach in the club there has been a big improvement in the development and results and look forward to continued improvement next season.

I would also like to thank our sponsors – The Sandridge and Tuskers for their continued support and use of their facilities. It is very much appreciated. Please support our sponsors where possible.

Throughout the season I had the opportunity to see the development of our secondary schools sides especially at the under 18 level - several players having the opportunity to play in our third grade men’s side around Christmas. This school's competition has enabled players to continue to develop their game while still at school and get the opportunity to play in the senior side of the club. Next season will see the first group of players cross into the senior side of the club to play in the men’s competition thus giving them the chance to play to new heights.

This season became very frustrating for everyone as it developed playing wise. Not only with the byes and the rain on Fridays affecting Saturdays but also with the constant calls I was getting from Canterbury Cricket on Fridays stating opposition teams were defaulting against us. At one stage before Christmas over the space of five weeks all our men’s teams (excluding seniors) had defaults. Combined with byes or wet weather, sides were missing out on cricket for several weeks in a row. I must thank everyone for their patience and hope these problems are addressed by the CCA over the winter months.

This season we were fortunate to have the services of Jamil Hassan from England. He arrived on Friday before the start of the season direct from England, went out and scored a century in his first innings for the club on Saturday and played in the Press Knockout on Sunday and then proceeded to sleep for the next week. He got on well with everyone and became a popular member of the club. When he wasn’t playing cricket he was involved with coaching at the junior and secondary school level where he impressed with his coaching skills. We hopefully look forward to his return next season.

This season saw a very loose amalgamation between Sydenham and Southern Districts. Each club continuing to run as a separate identity. The end of season prizegiving saw both clubs bought together for this function. Next season will see things move one step closer with the combining of practice facilities and social functions. I would like to thank Dave and the Friends for their efforts on the amalgamation, which will benefit both clubs down the line.

Finally I would like to thank everyone for their continued support over the season and look forward to seeing you all back for the 2000-2001 season

CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT

It was a year of some pretty substantial losses in the club – although not in terms of games. It started with Kath leaving the club and committee to go into the airforce. That was followed by Dean “Blobby” Fraser leaving mid season to go to Australia, which was a huge blow to the guys in 3rd grade and to the entire club.

Jamil joined us from England early in the season and took an immediate liking to our beer, fitting in very well and playing some excellent cricket.

A real highlight of the season came from the ever-improving Women’s team. They finished up winning the women’s grade and this year will be moving up to 1st grade to hopefully do the same there. They did this without the help of Chontelle Tie who packed up and went to Sydney to enjoy the warmer weather…..the social events will never be the same.

Then there was Jamie Helms who ended his season opening the batting and bowling in 2nd grade. To Bert’s dismay, Helms ended up following Chontelle to Sydney just before 2nd grade finals started.

That’s some of the losses we had last season but this season is sure to bring a lot more new faces along with some very exciting and enjoyable cricket.

Senior Men Team Report

The 1999-2000 for the senior team was a huge improvement on the past seasons. The results didn’t show the progress the team had made on and off the field. The main reasons for the improvements were the appointment of Glen Hooper as coach and Mike Pearcy as manager. I would like to thank them for all their hard work and may it continue.

The structure they have implemented has improved the profile of the Sydenham seniors. We have to keep up the progress and this is the way of the future. This will make the Sydenham Seniors a real force in the coming seasons.

I would like to thank our sponsor, The Sandridge Hotel. Without them, sport would not be possible. I would also like to thank the friends and the committee for all their support – it was very much appreciated. The groundsmen, Brian and Doug, need to be given a special thank you for all their hard work last season, it doesn’t go unnoticed.

On to the playing side of things. This past season saw the introduction of a number of new members to the team. The playing side of things saw the seam bowlers perform outstandingly well all season. Hamish Barton and Arron Redmond are very classy spinners; they performed brilliantly when ever they got the ball in their hands.

The batting side of the team had moderate performances with one exception that was Hamish Barton who scored an outstanding century. He is a player with a real future if given the opportunities. The rest of the batsmen in the side would be the first to say they didn’t really perform to their personal standards and achieve their goals. The batsmen have all the ability with a bit of luck they will be very good players and obtain their goals.

This coming season has all the signs of being a very good one. The team is looking forward to the coming season with great anticipation and promise. I hope we can achieve some very good results.

2ND GRADE TEAM REPORT

For 2nd Grade it was the proverbial real roller coaster ride of a season, starting badly, climbing high in the middle stages and then crashing down again. It started poorly in the first game, when after making 204 (Jamil Hassan making a brilliant 101 straight off the plane) we then dropped an amazing 13 catches and watched while Easts last pair put on 57 to give them an unlucky victory.

It got worse in the next match against the LPW Gulls. At the end of a rain-shortened first day they were struggling at 43/7 in reply to our 114, but disappointingly on the second morning they recovered to get first innings. Soon after lunch we were 52/2 and they were about to start feeding for a declaration, before we collapsed miserably to lose our last 8 for only 30 runs and consequently lose by 8 wickets.

We then lost again to them the next day in our first one dayer, although this was a thriller with them 8 down and one ball to spare and Tim Hamilton having the bowling figures of 10 8 4 0 !

Then came an abrupt turn in form and fortunes with 4 consecutive outright wins! BWU were thumped by an innings, then last years champions LPW Dragons were beaten by 5 wickets, after a fiery spell of 6-45 by Jamie Helms on the second morning set up the win. Marist were the next victims, the HSOB in our best 2-day effort of the season. Left an unlikely chase of 255 in 45 overs, we got there 7 down with an over to spare thanks to an excellent Sydenham 1 pitch and matching innings from Chad Romano (his only match for us), James Stevens, Kieren Williams, Jamie Helms and Tim Hamilton.

Two good one day wins chasing 173 against Easts and 120 against LPW Dragons (Bert Walker 4-5 and Tim Hamilton 3-31 and 25) saw us very well placed at the Christmas break, 2nd in the 2 day competition and 2nd equal in the 1 dayers.

The good form continued after Christmas, with the next five 1 dayers all being won, leaving us well deserved top qualifiers. We stuck to a well established routine with the opposition batting first in all matches and our bowlers doing an excellent job with Jamie Helms and Brad Moore generally making inroads at the top of the order, Tim Hamilton and Bert Walker bowling tightly after them, and Ryan Krammer and Sean Hobson usually sharing 10 economical overs between them. The batting went in fits and starts, usually we lost early wickets but we always scored quickly (averaging between 5-6 runs an over) and someone would see us through. Against St Albans it was Jamie Helms with 73 to see us to a 5 , against Burnside it was Gareth Martin and Tim Hamilton with an unbeaten63 run stand to see us home by 4 wickets, and against Riccarton it was Brad Moore and Bert Walker with an unbeaten stand of 38 to see us home in the last over by 1 wicket, chasing 220. This was our best one-day win of the season against a very strong side, thanks to an excellent team effort with 10 players scoring between 8 and 39.

Then the wheels fell off. In both home semi finals we batted pathetically, firstly chasing only 112 against the Dragons we collapsed for 74, then crashing for only 69 in the second chance semi against Riccarton. It was bitterly disappointing not to make the final after 7 straight wins, then losing both semi finals to teams we’d beaten in the round robin.

Unfortunately this form slump continued in the last three 2 day games of the season, with us losing first innings and hanging on for draws in the first 2, then being rolled by Old Colls for 36 (7 ducks) in the last game! We did fight back somewhat in this game to score 167 in the second innings and only lose outright by 4 wickets, but this last game epitomised our roller coaster season. It also meant we finished 7th in the 2 dayers, and although we were a massive 41 points clear of the 8th place team we were just off the main pack and again this was disappointing, given that we were 2nd after 2/3rds of the games at Christmas.

However on a positive note our 3rd place in the one day competition was a big improvement on the previous season, as was 7th in the 2 dayers with 75 points and 4 outright wins compared to 8th with 17 points and one outright win the previous season.

The 3 key players for the season were Jamie Helms (339 runs and 37 wickets), Tim Hamilton (321 runs and 26 wickets) and Brad Moore (172 runs and 32 wickets), 3 excellent all-rounders who all performed some top feats with bat, ball and in the field. With these 3 and Bert Walker capturing 130 wickets between them in all matches, plus good support from Ryan Krammer and Sean Hobson, we were able to bowl sides out all season. Also it was good to see Todd Harris and Craig Ross make successful returns before the end of the season.

Unfortunately the batting was another story. Our top order never fired and usually we were 2 down with less than 20 on the board, then having to rely on our aggressive middle order all rounders to try and rescue us more often than not. Jamil unfortunately never recaptured the form of his first innings for the club while Kieren Williams and Paul Feary were both hitting form when they went up to seniors after Christmas for the rest of the season. James Stevens (with 96 against Burnside), Ryan Krammer (in both semi finals) and Kyle Hunter (against Old Colls) all showed that they can produce the goods at this level but all basically under-achieved during the season, as did Kim Smythe (despite his safe catching) before his departure at Christmas. Gareth Martin and Brent Archer both have the goods but unfortunately were only rarely available and solid Steve Armstrong was injured early on, and the lack of substance in the batting was the main reason we didn’t finish higher.

In the field the standard was normally good, especially in the outfield where a number of excellent catches were taken, the best being by Jamie Helms, Brad Moore, Ben Larter, Ryan Krammer, Kyle Hunter, James Stevens, Dale Fisher, Tim Hamilton and Andrew Stace.

Behind the stumps unfortunately a lot of chances went down, although there were 3 standout catches by Paul Feary, Jamie Helms and Heath Sanders. In the wicketkeeping role Kieren Williams was really developing well, with 3 slick leg side stumpings in his last two games before his promotion to seniors after Christmas. Jamil deputised capably for a while after that, but once he hurt a finger we struggled, using another 4 keepers after that, which also didn’t help our efforts towards the end of the season.

However it was encouraging to see young players like Dale Fisher and Dave Crosby showing their all round talents late in the season, while Brad Moore, Kieran Williams, Paul Feary and Craig Ross were all very valuable acquisitions for the club this season and most promising young players for the future. Matt Noonan has ability to achieve a lot if he works at his game and with the side being a young one, the signs are very good for next season if everyone is on deck again.

Finally in the words of our sagacious scorer Brent Whear “it would have been a great season if we took out October and March!” Brent was a vital part of our team, not only an excellent scorer, but also as a sounding board, tactical adviser, sub fielder, friend and confidante. A big big thanks goes to him and also to all the 31 players we used in this almost successful but always entertaining season.

3RD GRADE TEAM REPORT

After losing the bulk of last year’s team, season 1999-2000 began with a new captain and several new faces. Competitive each week proved to be difficult, finishing 8th in a 10-team competition. This is mainly due to not having a consistent team every Saturday going through three captains and 52 players by the season end.

The bowling was the teams strength lead player of the season Andrew Stace. Sixteen wickets this season doesn’t do justice to how well he bowled. Probably deserved 10 or more wickets if not for dropped catches or poor umpiring. He was backed up well by Mark Warren and Hayden Spatcher. All three had many opposition batsmen in trouble, often putting the team into a good position only to fall short with some inconsistent and at times disappointing batting.

Despite this, there were some memorable moments throughout the season. - Taking the field with only seven players against Old Colls and BWU Gold. - Falling short of beating BWU Blue by 5 runs and HSOB by 1 wicket. - David Craigs diving one handed catch only centimetres above the ground. - 100 not out by Darren Hickson against BWU Gold. - Winning the last game against LPW Blue by an innings and 8 runs. James Berryman 97 and Ryan Burnett scoring 54 with the bat and taking 6-49 and 4-25 with the ball.

I would like to thank Ivan Thomson for the under 18 players. Jon Bennett for lending us players from his 6th grade team. Most of all a big thanks to Glenn Hooper for his time and effort with coaching and Friday nights in tracking down players.

5th/6th GRADE TEAM REPORT

Played 17 Won 8 Lost 9

This year saw an enlarged 6th Grade with the demise of last year’s 5th grade - due to lack of teams some of the cavaliers sides joined the dizzy heights of 6th grade. After a round robin competition the top eight sides split off to compete amongst themselves as 5th grade and the bottom eight stayed as 6th grade.

In the first round robin, the wide gap in abilities of various teams led to some very one- sided results. After some early setbacks, seven wins in nine games earn’t us the honour of promotion into the top half of the competition. However once there, we struggled against the stronger competition and only won one more game, although we should have beaten the eventual competition winner, St Albans B, who passed our total in the last over with the last pair at the wicket, with the help of some of the worst umpiring decisions of all time.

Our bowling was our strength and often kept us in the game after our inconsistent batting had let us down. Lionel Schulte, as usual, was our best performer troubling all the batsman he bowled to and deserved winning the side’s player of the year. Scott Tizzard and Jim Boyd both bowled steadily all season but Andy Chisnall was affected by injury and unavailability and didn’t bowl as much as usual. Matt Young gave our attack more penetration in the few games that he was available.

Our batting was generally disappointing with all players having at the best inconsistent seasons. The one exception was Darren Hickson who showed his ability with two hundreds and two eighties in his seven innings. Tony Danenberg performed well after a slow start as did Steve Sawyer although his form fell away after Christmas. Often fill in players were some of our best contributors.

Special thanks to Tony Danenberg for his help in getting a team out on the field when we were often short on Friday night and to the guest players who helped fill those gaps.

Commitment, Skill, Ambition and Talent these are the bases of a good team. Sadly Sydenham Seventh Grade was lacking in most if not all of these areas.

This years cricket season represented the good and the bad of having a seventh grade side.

At the start of the season the numbers were plentiful. As the first few weeks went by, we found that people were not keen to play. When one week we would get easily beaten by nine wickets only to show the inadequacy of the grade to bowl a team out for 14 runs the next.

By mid season we established a core of seven players. Most of which would turn up, only leaving us to find women, children and the elderly to make up the rest of our team. Hence often having to ask the opposing spectators if the wanted to play as we only had 9 or 10.

The stats showed that it is not always the easiest grade. Ask Kyle hunter who scored one of the quickest golden ducks in history, or John Gower who scored a 50 in sixth grade but couldn’t manage more than a 24 all season for us.

I know things can’t get worse and maybe the CCA should look into modifying the competition as there were huge discrepancies in ability between the top teams and those at the bottom such as Dave’s East Shirley side.

Special thanks to those few who could be relied upon to turn up each week.

PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT

Last season was one where the more significant achievements and milestones came off the field rather than on it. Both Jack Harliwich and Noel Moorhead turned 70 in the off season although unfortunately wear and tear is finally catching up with them both.

According to his records, Richie Thomas passed 20,000 runs for the club during the season and promptly announced his retirement. Well done Richie, although you know your retirement has not been accepted. The validity of some of the runs will also need to be verified by the club’s statistician Mr Bert Walker particularly the ones scored on overseas social outings.

On the field the team won 6 games which is the total of the last two seasons put together. We were competitive in most other games and with a bit of luck and a few less ducks could have won a number of other games where the losing margin was only a handful of runs.

Disappointing batting performances were a feature of too many games with the only bright light being Bill Nicholson who joined the team part way through the season. While the bowlers did an excellent job with the ball there was never much danger of the tail wagging in the batting department. This was a problem when bowlers outnumbered batsmen in most games due to the selectors policy of rotating the squad. This approach has now been adopted by the All Black selectors with a bit more success.

With the likely addition of several younger players to the squad next season (that is under 50) we can look forward to the season with some optimism that it may be better results wise. Either way it will no doubt be another enjoyable season.

WOMEN’S SECOND GRADE

Winners CCA Second Grade Competition 1999/2000

Captain: Erin Hill

The climax of the season was undoubtedly the winning of the CCA Second Grade Competition. The win was the result of the work put in on player development over the previous three seasons and the great team spirit and culture that has been built up by the players over the years. The team played very well as a unit throughout the season and if somebody failed there was always someone else stepping in.

Other highlights include the coach’s beard being shaved off not once, but twice. The establishment of the Sydenham Surfies Super 8 team and CCA allowing the team to be decked out in Hawaiian shirts. New tops and track pants as a result of successful team fund raising and the Club meeting the balance.

The relationship with Mid-Canterbury has continued to grow. The Mid/Syd team was again entered in the Press Knock Out and friendly matches were played at Rakaia in early December. Katie Pottinger and Greer Hill represented Mid Canterbury at the Under 17 Tournament in Dunedin and two of the Third Grade girls represented Mid Canterbury at the Under 14 Tournament.

In the 2nd grade competition, by Christmas the team was at the top of the point’s table with 6 wins and one draw (rain). Two losses post Christmas meant that to take the competition Canterbury Country had to be beaten twice in the last two games. We went into the last game at the SCG with a two point advantage, having beaten Country at Rangiora the previous week, this was to be our final with all to play for.

Batting first Syd’s made 131/4 (Greer 54*, Jane Allison 25) and considered that to be defendable, but at the drinks break Country were well on target at 80 odd for 1, with their two best batters still at the crease. A change of tactics saw their No 3 caught by Julie Gunn off George Mitchell’s only over for the day and in the very next over Greer removed the opener, caught in slips. The next 7 overs and 1 ball was truly an effort from a TEAM that had the skills, belief and desire to win. Country were all out for 116 with Greer taking a further 6 wickets for 3 runs, including a hat trick. Jane bowled 6 valuable overs at 0/10 and Liz Peoples was the other successful bowler. Katie Pottinger played with a broken finger (yes it was broken Kevin) and Sarah Leys missed playing having just come out of hospital the day before after an ankle operation, a testament to team commitment. Kelly Samson was an able replacement. I was very proud of all the team members and was really happy that the team and the club had achieved what they set out to do four years ago.

Erin and Sarah again took on the opening responsibility with Greer at 3, Jane at 4 and Katie at 5. Penny kept well with Erin as her understudy and regular slip fielder. George Mitchell, George Mcleod, Liz, Deborah Williams and Julie all made valuable contributions in their area of skill. Jane, Greer, Liz and Katie did the bulk of the bowling and were rewarded for their efforts. The part timers and change bowlers did what they were asked to do really well. Thanks to Kelly, Pip Rawson and Tracy Henderson for stepping in as replacements for the injured players. Chontelle Tie after taking 17 wickets departed on her OE and at the end of the season Julie returned to Wellington.

Thanks must go to Tracy, Kevin McGowan, and the Club (in particular AC, Ivan Thomson and The Friends) for all the support and help throughout the season. Also to Shaun McGowan for bowling in the nets week after week and keeping the batters on their toes.

Congratulations to Jane Allison for once again making the Canterbury Black Under 17 Team.

3rd GRADE WOMEN TEAM REPORT

Team : Carmen Anderson, Melissa Barber, Mischale Falconer, Emily Henry, Marcia Nuttridge, Fran Quinn, Pip Rawson, Jackie Rose, Kelly Samson, Lara Thomson, Chani Trornop, Emma Wallbank, Amanda Ching.

Under the captaincy of Jackie, the girls played very well this season. Certainly, there were matches lost, but even in these the team tried their hardest.

We were fortunate in that we had a strong and settled bowling attack and only rarely did we fail to bowl a side out. The fielding was frequently outstanding with several excellent catches taken and runouts effected with accurate throwing.

The batting was solid throughout the season, with everybody contributing at some stage. If the recognised batsmen failed, the rest of the team fought very hard and with skill to reach winning targets. I do not choose to mention any players in particular as they all performed well and were very supportive of each other and the team morale therefore was very high.

The team finished just outside the top 4 in the competition, which is a just reflection of their skills and the way they played. This is a very young team [aged between 12-15] and they were playing against opposition who were not only several years older but were also vastly more experienced. To perform as well as they did, individually and collectively reflects great credit. I was and am proud of them all. Their attitude and work ethic remained positive throughout the season and this translated into the good results they had.

From this team, several players had the opportunity to play representative cricket at under 14 level. They were: Kelly, Jackie, Fran, Melissa, Lara and Pip. Naturally they all performed well and were a credit to themselves, their teams and the Sydenham C.C.

As punishment for giving me a hard time all through the season, they now have to put up with me next season.

Kevin McGowan [Coach]

JUNIOR SECTION

Numbers in the Junior Section grew for the seventh consecutive season. In all there were 460 players playing in 45 teams in the 1999-2000 season. Highlights were the successful initiation of Friday evening ‘kiwi’ cricket, and the entering of a Sydenham-Southern Districts team in the Third Grade competition. The latter is a particularly important step for the future of the Club, providing a link between our secondary school players and the seniors.

Running such a large organisation has resulted in the need to formalise the structure of the Junior Section. On July 6 members resolved to form a “branch’ Incorporated Society and formally elected a committee. A pleasing aspect of this process was the ease of which committee members were found, indicating the willingness of parents and other volunteers to become part of running a successful club.

As the club has grown so has the amount of talent with a significant number of players, both boys and girls, being selected for various representative teams. Several of our young women were selected for Under 14 teams. They were Melissa Barber (Canterbury Black team), Kelly Samson, Pip Rawson and Lara Thompson (Canterbury Red team), and Jackie Rose and Frances Quinn (Mid-Canterbury team). David Crosbie and Julian Ostle (Under 15) and Nick Thomson ( Under 14 ) also represented their province. Two centuries were scored this season- by Scott Blakemore and Colin Hill.

The emphasis of our activities continues to be on coaching, development and enjoyment. A number of courses and seminars for were provided for parents, covering coaching, umpiring and first aid/injury prevention. The annual pool party was once again a raging success as was the prize giving. It was very disappointing however, that apart from the Second Grade women’s team, there was virtually no support at the prize giving from senior members of the club.

Nevertheless there are several players who coach teams, one of whom, Andrew Flanagan, was awarded the Committee Trophy for his work over several seasons. Bruce Ferguson, Blair Walker, Jamie Livingstone, Des Crosbie and Paul McKenzie are other ‘non parents’ who have provided support and taken teams.

Already the next season is looking good with a heavy coaching program under way and the prospect of new practice facilities being established at a local venue. If we can continue to retain our players through the secondary school years, and provide them with good organisation and coaching, then the Sydenham Cricket Club can look forward to a very successful period in both men’s and women’s competitions over the next five years and beyond.

Committee members were: Yvette Southorn ( Secretary ), Richard Barton (Treasurer), Jos Bakker, Carl Ahlfeld, Tracy Henderson, Barrie White, Tony Yeadon, Hugh Wilkinson, and Julie McKinnon. Special thanks also go to Kevin McGowan for his work in girls cricket, to the “Friends of Sydenham’ for organising the raffle and other funding opportunities and to Andrew Chisnall for his ongoing support. Special thanks also to Tracy Henderson for her hard work in running our coaching programs
