PRESIDENTS REPORT

The 2007/08 season has been a very difficult one, with unfortunately, only five committee members which was not enough to make a corium. This meant that a lot of work including the clubrooms renovation and other important activities such as social events and general maintenance to the clubrooms and practice facilities was not attended to as it should. It was also very disappointing to note the lower than expected collection of subs with at least a further $1500.00 outstanding at the end of the season. Sadly this has reflected in the clubs profit and has turned what should have been a very rewarding year financially into a result that could be best described as ordinary. The work in running the club has been left to far to few people and if club members have high expectations for the club and it's future then there will need to be a change of attitude and a serious injection of energy in the committee.

On a brighter note it is with relief I can report that the council have decided in the interim not to pursue the removal of another pitch from Sydenham Park. At the eleventh hour Sydenham Rugby supported our pleas to the council and although they had on going concerns as to the safety of the cricket blocks at the start of the rugby season they agreed to support on a trial basis a turf reconditioning program suggested by Mike Robins and paid for by council. This process is due to be reviewed in September, but by all accounts rugby is satisfied with the condition of the park when they took it in April, therefore we see no immediate issues going forward. Our club is currently enjoying a very good working relationship with rugby and I can’t stress enough to the incoming committee the importance of continuing the spirit of cooperation and goodwill. I would like to thank the efforts of David Heard, Bernie Ryan, Bruce Stewart and Canterbury cricket for their efforts in resolving matters that have long been a point of contention between the users of the park.

During the winter months a group of club members namely Tony Danenberg, Kevin Moore and myself got together to try and kick start the building renovations. As the committee were unable to appoint a subcommittee the above decided to unofficially do what we could to get repairs to the clubrooms underway and investigate the concept plans produced by Robin Vesey that had been displayed in the clubrooms during the season. We have been successful in preparing quotes for the renovation of the men’s changing rooms and toilet facilities as well as some much needed repair work inside the clubrooms. This has been a lot harder job than originally anticipated as the work needed to be carried out involves not only builders but Plumbers and sparkies. The total cost of the renovations will be circa $34,000.00. At the time of writing I can confirm that these quotes have been submitted and providing they are approved we are confident that this work will be complete by the start of the season. I would like to thank John Tucker and Chad Romano for their held and advice and look forward to working with them on the upcoming project. Further to this we have received an offer from Agile Building Solutions to produce for the club free of charge an alternative concept to the one currently in circulation. It is our hope that this concept will be available for the club to view before the season gets underway. A well as this we have also had several "unofficial” meetings with council and gaming machine trust as to the level of support and financial assistance that may be available should either project proceed. The responses from both so far have been very encouraging with the council very much behind the concept of a multi sport concept on Sydenham Park and an indication from the trust approached that they were most favorable toward supporting what the dubbed a “heritage project" I am aware that club members have differing views on how the club renovations should proceed so for the meantime I don’t wish to comment further on either concept until at least the AGM when members will have an opportunity to here the views of all concerned and perhaps give the incoming committee some direction as to the preferred direction to pursue.

Finally as I am retiring as president at the AGM it is a fitting time for me to sincerely thank those who have helped and supported me over the last five years. I am most grateful in particular to my colleagues on the trust, committee members and ordinary club members that have offered me their support and encouragement threw good and challenging times. I would also like to thank Ivan Thomson for all his hard work and dedication in running the committee and always availing himself to what ever task or cause that may be in the clubs interest.

I feel I have been honoured to serve the club and most privileged to play and associate with such outstanding people.

MEN’S CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT

As we were unable to find a Club Captain this season the job, or parts of it, fell to me. The role involved a potpourri of trying to field teams, helping with the bar, chasing up subs, and being around Sydenham Park each playing day to deal with any issues that arose. The main challenge however was to get a second grade team together each Saturday and this was largely done only with the support of players from our youth teams. In my twenty odd years of being a Club administrator I cannot remember a second side that was so bereft of players who were committed to the team. There was a core of around five or six with the rest being part-timers, although after Christmas things did improve a little. We cannot continue along this path in the coming season and we have already taken steps to ensure the second team is something the Club can be proud of.

Others will have expressed views about the overall performance of our top four teams so it is not necessary for me to say anything other than that the results were disappointing. However, we do have a young group of players who have the potential to become good senior players, including two or three who were part of the team that competed in the Club Finals in Auckland.

There are three things the Club needs to focus on in particular this year: re-establishing the Club spirit we enjoyed up until recently, improving the Clubrooms, and getting more help to build up our administration. Most of the other things we need are already there- an excellent coaching structure, top training facilities, and a stream of youth players coming into the club each season, albeit mostly in the lower grades. Each of these can be readily achieved if more people put up their hands to help in some way, and I sincerely hope this happens at the A.G.M.

Ivan Thomson Vice President

OBITUARIES

During the current year three ex SCC players passed away. We extend to their families our sincere sympathy and remember them in the spirit of the great game.

Ian Cummins, right hand batsman played for the Club from 1947 to 1958. His senior record was 34 matches played, 59 , 1 NO, Highest score 108, Runs 888 with an average of 15.3. Ian’s father Ted was a great stalwart and supporter of the Club. Ian passed away in August.

Bill Duncan, left arm medium pace bowler played for the seniors for two years 1970/71, 1971/72. Bill’s senior record was 24 matches played, , 77, runs 1481, average 18.9. He took 5 wickets in an innings on three occasions. Bill’s contribution to junior cricket in Canterbury was outstanding over a prolonged period right up until his recent sudden death in August. His personality and great sense of humour will be remembered as will his expertise in working with youngsters throughout Canterbury.

Bob Cunis, a NZ Representative player and coach played one match for the Presidents in 1968. The Club’s 74th Annual Report states “It was a pleasure to have Bob Cunis of Auckland (now in England with the New Zealand team), play one match by invitation at Labour Weekend. The presence did not affect the result as the match was lost, but he enjoyed the game which is what most cricketers in Presidents Grade desire, a Saturday’s cricket played in the right spirit”. Bob passed away unexpectedly at his home in Northland recently.

We record the untimely death of Graeme Cox who was a founding member of the Complex Committee. Graeme's outstanding contribution in the funding and establishment of the Complex Committee is acknowledged.

Sincere sympathies and condolences to Ross Martin on the passing of his mother Denise, who was a great supporter of the club.

Sincere sympathies and condolences to Paul and James on the passing of there father/grandfather Ivan MacKenzie.

Our sincere sympathies and condolences go to any club members who have suffered bereavements.

SENIOR MEN TRIP TO NATIONAL ONE DAY FINALS

Having won the senior men’s one day competition last season, Sydenham were invited to represent Canterbury at the National Club Cricket Championships for 2008. Each year this is hosted by the Cornwall Cricket Club in Auckland whose home grounds lie at the base of one tree hill (minus the tree these days). The championship involves the winning club team from each of the major associations playing 5 days straight of round robin games before a finals day on the 6th day.

Led by Craig Ross the squad contained the bulk of the senior team, some of the younger players coming through, and a pensioner.

Sydenham’s first game against Hawera (Central Districts) was played on the unique number 3 pitch. Sydenham amassed 345/6 with Grant Bell (83) dominating early on, Keiran Williams (112*) batting through and Craig Ross (50) provided the final fireworks. In reply Hawera attacked from the start and with former Zimbabwe player Dion Ebrahim at the crease looked like chasing the target down. However excellent fielding from the whole team and disciplined bowling from Craig Ross (3-22) and Ben Larter (3-44) helped dry up the runs and put too much pressure on Hawera as they fell 60 runs short.

Next up Sydenham faced the much heralded Green Island (Otago), who have been a frequent visitor to this championship over the years. Green Island after a good start found itself in trouble as Chris Cooper (3-29) and Ben Larter (4-36) knocked the top of their batting order and finally rolled them for 157. In reply Sydenham took little in the way of risks and overhauled the target five down with Keiran Williams (66*) anchoring the innings in his warrior like fashion.

Sydenham’s 3rd game was against the explosive Nae Nae Old Boys (Wellington). Batting first Sydenham battled hard with contributions from all the top order and thanks to some lusty blows at the end of the innings from Craig Ross (62*) were able to score 254-7. In reply Nae Nae came out hitting as expected, and got off to a good start. A strong effort in the field and a superb spell from Ben Rapson (4-35) turned the game in Sydenham’s favour with Nae Nae falling 61 runs short with Andrew Fullerton-Smith taking 4 catches in an impressive day behind the stumps.

Sydenham’s 4th game brought them up against the tournament favourite and host Cornwall (Auckland). Batting first Sydenham struggled through to 120-8 before mature batting from Les Humphries & Chris O’Connell & some lusty blows from Ben Larter saw them through to a more respectable 202-9. In reply Cornwall cruised to their target with some explosive batting, however Sydenham were heartened to see the trouble spin bowlers Ben Rapson & Simon Clinton-Baker gave Cornwall late in their innings.

In Sydenham’s final round robin game they faced City (Northern Districts). After a rain delay which reduced each innings to 43 overs, City were restricted to 236 with Ben Larter taking 3-45. Fielding once again was excellent with Sydenham executing 4 outs. Dominant batting from Simon Wraight (66), Keiran Williams (41) and Grant Bell (37) enabled Sydenham to chase down the tough target and book their spot in the next day’s final against Cornwall.

Cornwall batted first in the final and thanks to contributions from all of their batters posted an imposing total of 296-4. Sydenham struggled to stay on top of the run rate and lost regular wickets with Grant Bell (35) and Craig Ross (30*) the only batters to look comfortable. With Sydenham 133-6 the rain came pouring down and didn’t stop giving Cornwall the deserved win on superior run rate.

Despite finishing 2nd the boys were over the moon with how they had played throughout the tournament. They had exceeded their own expectations, and were exhausted at the end of 6 days cricket (culminating in them missing their flights home!)

It was pleasing to note that on numerous occasions we were complemented on our professional approach by the organisers & other coaches which is a credit to Mike Shrimpton’s hard work. The boys also apologise to Mike for all the ups & downs they have put his old ticker through during the past few years.

A big thank you to Dave Gallop, Ivan Thomson, and Mike Pearcy for all their hard work in helping make this trip happen. And also a big thanks you to the rest of the club for their support and messages of congratulations while we were away.

All the best for the winter, its good to be back and I look forward to the season ahead!

SENIOR MEN TEAM REPORT

The 2006-7 season offered considerable hope for the 2007-8 season, having won the one day competition and completed well in the two day fixtures to finish in the top half of the competition.

This season provided a startling contrast. At least seven players departed from the top two teams for various reasons which placed considerable pressure on the experience that remained as well as the younger players who were elevated.

The loss of Chad Romano and non availability of Sean Heather, and the ability to acquire a professional were key reasons for the poor start to the new season with some very inept batting in the first six weeks of cricket. At times it was very difficult to find players to fill positions in both the first and second teams.

In this situation we were reliant on the senior players to show leadership and performance, and those who ought to have performed found it difficult to hold the innings together with any substance.

Skilled players like Kieran Williams enjoyed spasmodic success, Andrew Fullerton-Smith and Grant Bell played several determined innings, Ben Orton and Ben Rapson expressed disappointment with their season.

In short, the failure of the top order to provide substance, put pressure on the lower order to provide credibility, especially captain Ross who was often placed in a position to restore the innings. This was further complicated with the occasional appearance of Chris Small, with rugby commitments, and Sunnie Chan with family concerns.

Hence the inability to put a consistent team on the park meant that several younger inexperienced players were given a chance, and although Kane Whiteley and Simon Clinton-Baker had limited success, it is hoped in the time ahead they will be able to benefit from those opportunities

From a bowling perspective, Craig Ross was very consistent and although he did not get the returns of the previous season, he set pleasing standards. Chris Cooper in his debut season did all that was asked of him and the test for him will be whether he can continue his progress in the coming season. Amandeep Singh was regrettably beset with injury concerns and Sunnie Chan provided strong performances when he was available. Ben Rapson showed real perseverance in his preparation and is becoming a spinner of quality, with strong performances in different roles.

Pleasingly the post Xmas period was encouraging with younger players coming into the club, with Simon Wraight and Les Humphris showing positive signs that they will be making contributions in the future.

However club officials need to be aware that of the 15 players used during the course of the season 10 come from outside the area, many of whom will move on after they complete their tertiary studies.

It was pleasing to learn that the Prems. finished the season on a very positive note with the Sydenham club finishing runners up in the National One Day Tournament in Auckland. My personal thanks to Chris and Craig for the planning and preparation that went into achieving this excellent result.

Finally my thanks to the club and to Ivan Thomson, Michael Pearcy and David Gallop in particular for their continued support during a difficult season.

Mike Shrimpton Coach

The 2007/08 season wasn’t one of the most memorable seasons for the senior team. Much same as the season before we had a first up lost at the expense of Lancaster Park Woolston. The following game against St Albans went much the same way as we lost by 130 runs.

The following match against Marist was a reduced over’s content as there was heavy rain the night before. The game finally got under way late afternoon with 20 over’s a piece. We batted first and only managed to score 85 runs. Given the conditions it was defendable if we were to bowl well. This was not the case and we ended up short. It was not an ideal start to the season with 3 consecutive losses in the one day competition.

The next match was the start of the two day competition and we were looking at having a good season. It was always going to be tough with the first match being East Shirley. We proved to be well short of there mark with a sustainable lost by an innings and 22 runs. The following match was against Lancaster Park Woolston. Park had a first innings lead of 100 runs, this was lucky not to be more thanks to a well constructed 50 by Kerion Williams. We learnt from our mistakes of the first innings and managed to make 207 in our 2nd innings. This was achieved by solid batting from Kerion Williams, Ben Orton Grant Bell and 50 from Craig Ross. This left Lancaster Park Woolston needing 142 of 14th over’s, we managed to hold on for a draw. I believe this gave us the confidence we needed to get our season back on track.

The following match was a one day match against Burnside/ University. Burnside batted first and made a very respectable 218 off their 50 overs. The run chase proved to be a thriller in which we managed to knock the runs off with 3 balls to spare. The bulk of the runs came from Kerion Williams who scored 86 and a cameo from Ben Orton who hit 42 off 33 balls. The following match was a two day match against Marist which we won easily by 10 wickets. The game was won convincible by the bowlers. The major factor being Chris Cooper taking 6 for 24 in the first innings and Amendeep Singh taking 6 for 44 in the second innings.

The rest of the two day season just faded away for our team with drawn matches against Old Boys Collegians, Riccarton, Burnside University and Marist. This ultimately left us in the bottom section of the two day competition. The last two matches in the two day competition resulted in a 4 loss to Old boys and a gutsy win against Burnside. The result was made possible with Burnside being bowled out for 66 in there 2nd innings thanks largely to Ben Larter4 for 9.

The rest of the one day season was completed on a high with a last ball win over Canterbury country, 93 run loss to Riccarton and a 4wicket win over Old Boys.

It was an up and down season for the senior side. There were a lot of positives to take out of the season with some brilliant individual bowling effort from Sunnie Chan, Chris Cooper and Amendeep Singh. The spin bowling of Ben Rapson was a virtual link to the make up of our success in certain matches of the season.

The bulk of the runs came from Craig Ross, Ben Orton, Kerion Williams and Andrew Fullerton-Smith, with all these players scoring round 400 runs for the season. There were also promising performances from the bat from Grant Bell and noticeable young talent in Kane Whitely and exciting talent in all-rounder Les Humphries.

I would like to thank the team for all their hard work during the season and look forward to seeing everybody next season fit and well. Big thanks to Mike Shrimpton for all his hard work and a season in which Shrimpo got noticeably greyer.

GRADE 2A TEAM REPORT

Overall this has been a disappointing season for the 2nd Grade Side with a 6th placing in the One Day Competition and a last (8th) placing in the Two day Competition. Poor attendances at pre season training carried on throughout the season and commitment from players was generally lacking. Over 35 players have been used for this team which is far too many to get a strong core team and good performances on a week to week basis.

Thank you to the junior players who filled in for this team throughout the season. It was also great to have a number of 3rd grade players become regulars in this side after their team withdrew from their competition at Christmas time.

The highlight of our season, which reinforces the true potential of this team, was a win inside one day in the two day competition against Riccarton at Sydenham Park. Brilliant bowling performances by Tim Bloomfield (8/33 and 6/16) and Chris O’Connell (4/15) along with a fine 76 from Brad Sumner meant that this outstanding feat was able to be achieved.

For the season Tim Bloomfield topped the bowling with 48 wickets including bowling figures of 7/20 and 4/74 v Mar, 4/36 vs ES to go with his figures against Ricc.

Chris O’Connell topped the batting with 292 at an average of 24.30. He scored a 55 and was unfortunate to be dismissed for 49 twice this season against Mar and St A. He took 4 wickets in an innings three times with his performance vs Ricc and 4/49 vs St A and 4/31 vs Mar.

Other excellent performances this season were Sunjay Ganda 70 vs OBC and 6/102 vs Mar; Brad Sumner 76 vs Ricc; Brad Hill 6/88 vs ES; Christo Peters 48* vs St A.

This team looks forward to a much improved next season with improved player commitment, attendance and on field performances of a higher quality.

Many thanks goes to Ivan Thomson for his tireless work organising things behind the scenes and having the ability to find players to fill in at the drop of the hat when we were struggling for players.

GRADE 2B PREDATORS TEAM REPORT

The Predators had another mixed season. And by mixed I mean the team was full of either super skinny young lads eager to get on with the game, or the fat old farts who just wanted to get in to the beer.

The results for the season were a bit of a mixed bag as well. You'd have to say we were a bit unlucky with all our rained off games being against the lower teams in the grade, denying us probable competition points. That being said, we didn't win enough of the “must win” games, and so we finished second at the end of the year. No one likes to come second to Old Boys, although I hear they often come first.

Despite the final position in the competition, the team always had a blast on the field. No one could deny that the team enjoyed playing cricket with each other, even with Rob and Darren showing up. We usually enjoyed playing against our opposition teams as well, and I think it was a success having the CCA and Suburban comps merged at this level for the first time. Finally we got to play at some different grounds, including the windy New Brighton home ground.

The following stats speak for themselves, but a few memorable moments throughout the season have to include Rob's wicket!?!?!?!, James going three games in a row where not every player in the opposite team shook his hand at the end of the game, Disco Stu tighty whiteys, Tuppy showing up on time, and Rob moving in with his girlfriend and not being seen for the rest of the season...

GRADE 2C TEAM REPORT

In late January the Club had a new team in the 2C Competition. In the first part of the season Sydenham Blue had continued on its winning way in the Youth Third Grade Black Div 2 competition. Many of the team had started with Sydenham Juniors at Primary School so it was good to see them wanting to carry on with their cricket after Secondary School, and wanting to play for a Sydenham Senior Team.

The first match was against the grade winners, Addington. It was a good introduction to the more intense competition and pressure of the senior grades, not all to do with the cricket. Our first innings total of 172 didn't look too bad when at one stage Addington were 4 for 16. A 139 run partnership changed that and Addington was 94 ahead on the first innings. In the second innings we managed to give them something to chase, 35. Thanks to Christo Pieters, Addington lost a couple of wickets in getting that score. The match showed the grade would be a challenge but the team in the end earned the respect of the opposition for the competition they provided and the way they stuck to their task. It was a promising start.

The team had two further full matches. Against St Albans we struggled with the loss of several players who had left for University studies. We were beaten outright. The last match was against East Shirley. They made 156 in their first innings but a 90 run partnership between Hayden West and Nick Franzmann, and 79 is from both Nick Franzmann and Lane Tutty set our team up with a good first innings total of 283. East Shirley's second innings total of 133 left us needing just 7 for the win. It was a win by 10 wickets to Sydenham and a good note on which to end the season.

This team has brought to the senior club some real enthusiasm for good cricket, a good team culture and some players with real ability. A number of the team helped to fill in for other senior teams when asked. The team also appreciated the special award to Lane Tutty for the contribution he had made over the seasons to both the senior club and the junior club. He was the team's youngest player, wicket keeper and often captain. It is to be hoped that the core of the team will play together in coming seasons. If they do the players will add much to the senior club.

GRADE 3A TEAM REPORT

Two Shock departures early on in the season hurt us. Matthew Davies and Sebastian Parr had both been playing cricket with me since we were 5 at Hoon Hay. They left us for work opportunities here and abroad. From then on we tried to keep filling in the team with many promising fill ins such as Nick and Bennie Magon, Jared Reins, Cam Burgess, Vaughan Thomas, James Marsh and Jack Tame. With these talented individuals we managed to scrape a few wins together but fell to the same demise as most seasons with more losses than wins.

Player Highlights Highlights for the year included three five wicket bags, bowled by Geordie Dann, Josh Gardner and Normand Lee. Four fifties two by Geordie Dann, one by a 14 year old little brothers friend called Jarrad, and one in the final game to Lee Gallagher. Scott Marsden really got his eye in a few times and was smashing sixes on regular occasions at number 9. Tom Appleton was top scorer for us until he left for Wellington for University. He scored them at a blistering pace, 172 runs off 549 balls, or 91.5 overs. We had more than 30 players play for us this year in order to have 11 each week. We have had more than 70 since our statistics began in 2002. Normand Lee won the player of the year again with 27 wickets and 184 runs. John Carter bowled very well and was unlucky to not pick up more wickets. Josh Gardner’s offspin gave him plenty of wickets. He also opened the batting for us which is appreciated. Geoff Bunn showed much potential the middle of order but never really got the big scores. Mark Moore was away more than he was there so had a tough year with no consistency but was always chipper to get into it. My highlight was 42 of 19 vs. Harewood in an embarrassing 150 run loss at HC.

Prospects Recruiting needed to have a core team of 11 and not 8. Jared Reins, James Marsh, Bennie Magon, Nick Magon, Andrew Sawyer, Jack Tame, Nick Laing, Jeremy Obrien could all be possible contenders to fill the spots.

The Competition OBC Tan have some nice chaps in the team and are fun to play but the captain and his brother are foul people and everyone dislikes them immensely. Heathcote was a good addition to the competition with a chatty South African called Tiger. East Shirley are good fun except they have two batsmen that are far too good for the comp and are frustrating as hell in the field. Best of all was playing on the number one pitch vs. a great bunch called Merivale Papanui. They had tea ladies and a pavilion for us at Edgar Mackintosh Park. We won comfortably with no wickets to spare but 3 balls to spare.

GRADE 3B GOATS TEAM REPORT

With the combining of last years Suburban 3B and CCA 5th grade competitions this year was a bit of an unknown quantity. The one that was going to make it better before we even played a game was the fact of having 12 teams in the grade instead of the 6 we had last year. However on the back of the same squad which had shared last years competition the Goats rose to the occasion and took out the grade by a two clear win margin over the chasing pack, leading from the opening day. For once we didn’t live up to our name playing very constant cricket through the season for a 15 win 2 loss record. Our only losses were to our old adversaries, the Caledonian Pirates. The first was a comprehensive defeat but the second was a narrow loss under controversial circumstances. Our strength through the year was our bowling attack with no team making 100 runs in an innings until the sixth game of the year. Our batting improved throughout the year led by the consistent Richard McKernan who finished with an average above 50 for the year. However unlike some of the other teams all our players showed some batting ability and most of our top six showed steady figures at the end of the season. Overall an enjoyable season played in good spirit by most teams, with our guys making time to have a beer after the game as well as the odd BBQ.

See everyone back next season.

PLAYERS

Jon Bennett Batting three all year the run production was a bit of a mixed bag but a consistent last three games of the season saw the total up to 359 for a reasonable year. Most enjoyable moment of the season was bowling Thumper and being able to look at the “stunned mullet” expression on his face.

Shane Bourke

Had a good season with the bat and should have had more than just the one score over 50. Played more aggressively, having a strike rate round 90 and looked all the better for it. Shane also bowled some useful lovers including a match winning spell against Merivale in a match we were looking like losing.

Jonno Campbell

While missing a few games this year, jonnop still had a good season with 21 wickets at the best average and strike rate. Sometimes served up a few pies for the batsmen to hit but tells us that’s just to lull them into overconfidence. Worth his place in the team for the BBQs alone.

Stacy Garrett

Top wicket taker this year with 33, bowling his big out swingers, Stacey had some great moments. None better than on the last day of the season with 5-17 vs. St Albans and none worse than his first over against Burnside where he bowled 8 consecutive wides or no balls to start his first over. By the end of the over he had 1-20 but we mutually agreed that it was time for a spell. Robbed of a 50 early in season by some comic batting by Phil.

Rob Graves

The man known for getting into the teens (but not in the Paul McKenzie way) and then getting out found the way to the bigger scores this year including 71* in an unbeaten opening stand of 144 vs. Old Collegians. He always could be relied on to keep up enthusiasm in the field and to front with imported beer when it was his day.

Phil Gray Only played the first half of the season due illness (not contagious syphilis as was reported by one team member) where Phil was his usual consistent self at the bowling crease. He did have a few batting issues though leaving Ollie stranded 49* while he played out the last over of the innings for a maiden off a bowler bowling a two pace run up. Hope you get well ready for next season.

Richard Mckernan

Richard had a great year with over 600 runs at 50 with a strike rate of 114, 12 wickets and 13 catches. Never short of a word of encouragement for the opposition was he the master of the walking charge from the first ball of the game. One of the best fielders in the grade but he should wait until he has made the catch before he starts laughing. Still trying to palm off the worlds dodgiest can of Canterbury Draught.

Paul Morris

Morris highlights didn’t feature many batting innings as he accumulated 5 ducks through the year but he did find a new bat and went 6/6 with catches. Always quick round the park unlike many other team members he was also an expert at befriending the Spreading Domain bowheads before a riot started

Ollie Needham

Ollie always had to work hard behind the stumps as 163 wides were fired down in his general direction by our bowlers (Lionel excluded) but he always fronted well. A consistent run getter all year he finished with the fourth best aggregate. The quietest appealing keeper in world cricket.

Bede Oulaghan

Bede went through midseason crises where he changed from an off spinner to a batsman after bowling an over which went for 20 off only four legitimate balls because the umpire had lost count due to the wides and no balls. Found some success batting at six with his aggressive style. Played the shot of the season against Riccarton where he produced the ramp shot, on demand from the sideline to end the game.

Jason Robinson

Another good year for Jason with 26 wickets at an average of 10 and a hat trick against Riccarton. An aggressive batsman he could score more runs if he was a bit more selective on what he was going to hit. Supplied some top notch meat for our BBQs, marinated steak and Dutch sausage, YUM

Lionel Schulte Mr. consistent with the ball, even if the body is starting to give out on him. 25 wickets at fewer than 3 an over was a good return. However the batting wasn’t what we were used to although he did get a couple of rough decisions (I’m looking at you Paul Morris). May need to wear a chest protector in the field after one dropped catch echoed around the ground. Had a great end of year dinner at his Bayou restaurant in Sumner. Simon Vincent

While Simon was meant to be one of our fill ins, he played as many games as some regulars. This season would have to go down as one of his most successful, not for the runs or wickets that he took but for the fact that this is the first season I can remember that he didn't break down with injury. That Monday night yoga must be paying off.

Special thanks to all those players who filled in for us through the season. It was great to have a group of guys who were keen to play the odd game that you could ring on a Friday night to cover for a regular who couldn't make it. So thanks to Simon, Kyle Hunter, Tony Walter, Andy Chisnall, Struan George, Hagen Schulte and lastly Hayden McLean, who created a lasting impression with the captain in his only 10 over sub fielding effort by mis twice off his bowling ?

Cheers Jon Bennett, Captain

GRADE 3C TEAM REPORT

The season started out reasonably slowly, after having a 15 strong team last season we were struggling to get 11 every game. Our opening batter was out with an ongoing sickness, another of our batters was out with work, another having difficulty getting Saturdays off because of woman related issues (so we believe) and another because we really didn't like him didn't want him around. And wouldn’t you know it our opening bowler is out for 3 weeks in Australia, then in the first game back, before a ball is even bowled, he rolls his ankle and is out for the remainder of the season.

A Blessing in disguise in some ways as a lot of the lads took up the challenge and stepped up their game, and the ringers we grabbed (almost every week) started to get into it as well. Karl Broadhurst was the stunner of the year, after only bowling once last season, took 18 wickets in 4 games, with two 6'fers carving up the side with his outswingers. Abraham Atherton consistant as always and was vital to keeping the runs down.

Keeping the runs down was what our tea m needed with a decisive lack of specialist batsman. We generally put in a good bowling effort as only once during the whole season did the opposition score above 200. The chasing however was sometimes not the best... after losing 8 out of 10 the lads picked it up, winning the last 5 out of 6 with some gritty batting and determination against some good bowling line ups.

The fielding this year was top notch, and all the lads supported the bowlers in the field grabbing some stunning catches and putting in 110% in the field.

Overall considering the manpower shortage the team gave it a good shot and will be looking to grab a better placing next year, and hopefully with a full team.

CARDINALS PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT

Fair to say finishing 3rd equal with Riccarton and five points off 2nd place in a strong competitive Presidents grade was a good effort.

This is a grade where on the day any team can win. Familiar faces from various teams continue to surface, quality players from a bygone era still have ability and it’s obvious that no one enjoys losing. Grant Adamson, our outstanding wicketkeeper and the grades best glovesman said to me at the start of the season “I will play if it’s serious”.

So, am I happy with the season? Yes on several fronts. There is an excellent team spirit with many many friendships formed over one, two, even three decades. The end of season dinner epitomised this with most still going strong at 2am on a Sunday morning. We played good hard cricket with an excellent standard of fielding backing up a bowling attack that, on it’s day, was as if, not stronger than most attacks in the grade. I believe some of our bowlers would still return respectable figures at senior level mainly because of a consistent nagging line. In fact, apart from a belter of a batting wicket at Elmwood, our attack never got collared this season. The bowling averages backs this opinion and I am extremely proud of the boys putting 100% effort in at the bowling crease.

As Congo will acknowledge, having skipped the side for the previous two seasons, there’s no shortage of cricketing brains and advice in the side. I really enjoyed this part of the season, watching and listening to the team thinking cricket. Really, at the end of the day it all revolved around trying to beat the opposition! So, as a captain, you couldn’t ask for much more.

Although more is what I wanted and I feel the key to not winning the grade revolved around our batting. The stats show reasonable averages and there were some cracking good knocks. Hurricane Higgins 136 not out being an obvious example. Without detailing games that we should have won, we simply didn’t do the business when it counted with many soft dismissals and at times silly decision making. You know you love this game when you’re still fuming two days later ah!!!

Several highlights for the season include: Bert Walker bowling again. This was brilliant seeing the legend at the SCG running in once again and getting the cherry in that channel of uncertainty was memorable. Hopefully next season Bertie will be able to have a full season at the crease.

As mentioned, Grants keeping was first class. This guy is sharp behind the sticks and also has an astute sense of awareness for making valuable fielding placement suggestions. Wayne Higgins coming back to the SCG and joining our team was fantastic. I’m not too sure if many guys can hit the ball harder in this grade. Whilst he scored 400 runs in the season, I firmly believe next season he will well and truly top that. Jeff Thin also joined our team this season bringing plenty of enthusiasm. He looks technically a sound bat with the 67 against Sumner a match winning innings.

In the bowling department Julian Van Dyke was always awkward. His nagging medium pacers, left arm off just a few steps continue to impress. He’s extremely fit and agile and very good in the field. Stu Simpson had around half a season with us. Whilst the old body may not quite be the same, boy did he bowl beautifully. This guy is a true team mate who continues to give 110%. Ken Julian, Mr Consistent, continues to be the grades best slow bowler. He never got smashed this season mainly because he’s just clever. Family commitments mean Ken is a 40% player these days. When he plays though, boy it really makes a difference! Mike Dolden had an interesting season. This guy just continues to give us all. I’ve played with him now for over 20 years and im convinced he hasn’t changed. His aggressive nature on the pitch is fabulous to watch. It adds to the dynamics, he keeps you on your toes and also makes you laugh. I bet he will be working on his arm ball over winter and thinking to himself “I’m gonna show these buggers that I’m not finished yet”. Bill Nicholson with his gentle left arm seamers was invaluable. Hard to hit and always thinking this guy is dependable. He had few opportunities with the bat but looked to be positive at all times. Jason Miller was frustrating. All the ability you could ask for and when he played you knew opposition batsmen would struggle. But due to work and maybe love, Jason went bush.

Batting was up and down all season. I decided at the start of the season that Kevin Congdon would open throughout. This would allow a technically sound opener who scored nearly 5000 senior runs to anchor one end whilst hitters bash at the other. Congo picked up our team batsmen award scoring 450 runs. After xmas he had a lean trot for 5 or 6 games and I know he will be thinking that 600 or 700 runs was definitely possible. He still has it and I don’t see that changing. Mark Paget always looked good all season. He has excellent hand eye co-ordination and loves to hit long and hard. I am personally going to put out a challenge to Mark for next season to score 500 plus runs. He is good enough. Wayne Higgins as mentioned was all aggression. He got off slowly and after a few innings agreed that no.4 in the order was best suited after the cherry losing some shine. Again Higgie should have comfortably hit 500 plus runs, scoring just over 400 was good. I wanted more.

Unfortunately Kenny had few opportunities with the bat. We know how good he is and it’s hoped he can get that big blade working to full fruitition next season. As skipper of the side, I felt it wasn’t a bad effort. My batting let me down in three key games that we lost. Writing this now, I’m still getting over it. Scoring a hundred and losing to an average Sumner side at the SCG still also grates. I also realise though that’s cricket. I was happy with the bowling effort. My right shoulder continues to ache and I seriously thought my time at the crease had ended. Bert Walker was a source of inspiration. There are also plenty of guys in this team with similar pains, so my attitude was to harden up. Winning the award for best alrounder in afternoon grades is a direct reflection on this team. They lifted me to perform.

I would also like to acknowledge the fine efforts of our colourful and humorous team member Mike Pearcy. As Club President, Mike has been fabulous. He finishes up this, at times, laborious and thankless task later this year. His last dream, perhaps his biggest dream, is to make the clubrooms twice the size it is now by building up. This guy has vision and I believe that the club will be the poorer once he steps out of the fold. Hopefully anyone stepping into his shoes can take a leaf out.

To finish on an exciting note, it is envisaged that at the end of next season, 08/09, the team will travel to Sydney to compete in a Golden Oldies Tournament. I have a strong feeling that this will happen. It would carry on the legacy of a thoroughly descent bunch of guys who have played a bit, enjoy each others company, love a few quiets and give it there all in the name of the game of the great game Cricket!

HOSPITAL PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT

A thoroughly enjoyable season thanks to Richard Laing’s captaincy and the overall evenness (with the exception of the top and bottom teams) of the competition. The spirit of the competition was excellent and I can recall only one moment of acrimony which was initiated by an individual with a known track record. Our final record was 10 wins and 7 losses, our 50 points putting us 5th equal with Sumner. Once again there were a couple of games that we should have won but weak performances on the day cost us dearly. Unfortunately one of these was our defence of the Graham Frampton shield against Old Colls Blue which meant our tenure lasted only one week. Never mind, Southland had a shorter Ranfurly Shield tenure in the 1960’s. Particular highlights were the victory over Riccarton to win the Frampton shield and our win over the Cardinals who managed to have their season’s shocker against us. I would like to see some sort of trophy for the match between our two sides. One special moment of the season was Dave Peddie’s appearance against Sumner which represents 40 years association with the team.

The bowling was impressive. Chris Spencer our leading bowler led the attack well and at last managed to induce some edges that were taken. Hamish Conway started the season with a rush. He had 6 for 21 vs BWU and 5 for 29 vs St Albans. He did tend to bowl a tad short in the games after he had taken wickets but that doesn’t detract from his overall value. Chris Warren was the other spearhead bowler and was always accurate and demanding. Jim Boyd, Tristan Pettit and James de Costabadie all had good spells as change bowlers. Jim did very well considering the state of his shoulder at the start of the season. Tristan’s spell against the Cardinals deserves a special mention. Having conceded 13 runs in his first over, he ended with 5 overs, 4 maidens 2 for 13. Steve Chambers showed his class in the few games he played. Nick Robinson, with his changes of pace, Jonny Smart when free of injury and Prasanna gave us a range of options in the slower department. Overall we had more bowling resources at our disposal this season and went into the final game against Old Colls Gold with 9 viable bowling options (or 10 if you count Laing!).

The batting was generally consistent and the runs were shared over a wider range of players than usual with no-one scoring more than 400 this year. Bernard Fanning, when not ‘missing in action’, always batted well finishing with 81 in the final game. His talent really is wasted at number 8! Nick Robinson had another strong season with the bat and Hamish Conway, particularly later in the season, showed that he was adept at pacing an innings. Richard Laing, Tony Danenberg and Jonny Smart were all regular contributors and Chris Warren impressed on a couple of occasions as a pinch hitter. Sumit Raniga had one good innings and always looked assured but had some bad luck. He will score more highly next year. Tony Waters made one appearance and, despite making constant reference to not being able to see the ball, made 43. This man needs more game time. Many others chipped in with useful contributions.

Provided we can hide the ‘older statesmen’, we field as well as any team in the grade and some memorable catches were taken – Hamish Conway against Riccarton and Richard Laing in the last game to mention but two. Three run outs in the last game helped us secure a close victory. Wicket keeping duties were shared by Tony Danenberg and Dave Jardine both of whom kept very tidily and were not out of place in a grade that has a number of polished operators in this department.

We look forward to the new season with eager anticipation

WOMEN’S 2nd GRADE

Team List; Maria Loughton (c), Erin Hill, Katie Pottinger, Kate McBride, Toni Smith-Hunwick, Hayley Jerard, Heidi Jerard, Abby Cairns, Stacy Hunt.

Due to several of last season's 1st grade team leaving to further their cricket, as we couldn't provide Premier status & some of the 3rd graders not playing due to work, being discovered by boys, or mounting weekly shopping sprees of Olympic proportions, we had insufficient numbers to enter teams in either of these grades. We therefore combined & played 2nd grade 20/20 games. It has to be said that little satisfaction was gained playing this format, not only from our perspective but from other teams points of view also. Our results were a mixed bag. We either won by huge margins or lost similarly. We had no "close" games & finished halfway on the table.

Regrettably, the scorebook has been misplaced & therefore no stats are available at this time. However it can be reported that all team members contributed at times, with Erin showing her class & experience with the bat & Toni featuring best with the ball. Maria managed a couple of 40+ scores, while Kate, Katie, Hayley & Heidi also featured with wickets or runs at vital times.

We had two players selected for Cant'y U15 teams (Hayley & Heidi), & Toni & Kate both represented at U17 level thus keeping up with tradition.

Next season will see the Sydenham women's section combine with LPW. At present they have Premier & 1st grade teams & nothing beneath those. We have what will be an exceptionally strong 3rd grade team & a lot of junior players coming through. It is envisaged that in a very short time, many of these players will make up the bulk of the combined 1st grade team & progress through to Premier cricket - something which we cannot offer. This has met with the unanimous approval of the girls at both clubs. We will continue to maintain a strong bond with all the players as we will be involved with coaching & team selections for all women's grades. In the end this was a simple decision which was made with the girl’s welfare at heart. If it wasn't done, the women's sections at both clubs would become non-existent in a very short space of time.

Finally, the girls & I would like to thank Ivan Thomson for his unflagging support, Andrew Chisnall for his willingness to coach, umpire & help & Ian Hill for all of the above, as well as representing not only the Sydenham girls, but every woman cricketer in the Cant'y region, on the WAG committee. Often an onerous task & at times a lone voice of reason, Ian has served everyone wonderfully well. Thank you all.

Kevin McGowan Coach

SYDENHAM JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB

The Sydenham Junior Cricket Club continues to be one of the largest junior cricket clubs in Christchurch, fielding 36 teams last season, which included 4 in the secondary school grades; 9 senior one day; 8 junior one day, 2 girls; and 13 non-hard ball grades.

In addition, 30 new players took part in the Friday night Milo Have-A-Go programme.

Trophy winners at the end of season prizegiving included William Rykers, Batting and Junior Player of the Year; and Mitchell Gardner, Bowler of the Year. Laura Tilley was the Girls’ Player of the Year; Kate McBride, Girls’ All Rounder; and Toni Smith-Hunwick , Outstanding Player Women’s Lower Grades. The older boys will have their end of season prize-giving later this year.

The club was again well represented in the boys’ regional tournaments with an all-time club record of 46 boys playing in the CJCA regional tournament in November.

Also in the Feb/March 2008 regional tournaments, we had 39 players in regional teams and 14 in Canterbury teams. Two of our girls made the CCA U17 rep team and two made the U15 team.

Coaching continued under the stewardship of Kevin McGowan with well-patronised clinics on Monday and Friday afternoons at the Sydenham Park nets. The nets again proved to be a valuable and well used resource over the summer. The club is also grateful to Howzat in Matipo St for donating lanes free of charge for the club’s winter training.

Kevin has been instrumental in bringing about a merger of our girls’ teams with Lancaster Park Woolston Cricket Club as a way of strengthening our women’s game. The merged teams will commence in October.

The club has also updated its website, with a much more user-friendly design, which will hopefully improve player access to information. Take a look, on www.sydenhamcricket.org.nz

SYDENHAM JUNIOR CRICKET CLUB, ANNUAL REPORT

As the club has been without a Convenor this season, this annual report has been written by Kerry Constable, Gear Manager and Youth Cricket Grade Manager.

We have now had two full seasons of playing Super Eight and a 20/20 format games at Junior Average level.

All Secondary School grade cricket, now plays a “calendar year” season. The first full season under the new dates commenced in late January 2007. It is worth noting that 4 out of our 5 Secondary School grade teams, carried off trophies at the CCA awards for the 2007 playing season.

However, from a suburban club’s perspective, the calendar year season creates all sorts of issues for both: young players transitioning from Senior Traditional, into this grade…… and also for older players transitioning out of the grade.

As a club, we should consider lobbying the CCA to revert to the “Traditional Season”

Facilities The practise nets at Sydenham Park have again proven to be a valuable and well used resource over the summer for the hard ball teams.

Coaching It was pleasing to see that the season’s specialist skills clinics were again well patronised this year. The clinics were run by Kevin McGowan and Chris Ferguson every Monday and Friday afternoon at Sydenham Park and have been very successful in raising the skill level of our young players.

Also thanks to HowZat Matipo St, who have kindly provided lanes free of charge for our club’s winter training sessions.

Looking into the upcoming season, we have been collaborating with the senior club, to provide a paid player/coach from one of their senior teams, to provide a structured coaching programme for our secondary school grade teams.

Girls Cricket There were two club teams fielded last season, plus the Selwyn House team. Last season: Ø 2 girls made the CCA U17 rep’ team Ø 2 girls made the CCA U15 rep’ team

Also, the club is happy to report a merger of our girl’s teams with the Lancaster Park Cricket Club’s girl’s teams. This positive change has been sponsored and driven by Kevin McGowan, as a means to strengthen girl’s and women’s cricket in Christchurch. The merged teams will commence in October 2008 as a collaboration between the two clubs.

Gear Our thanks to the CJCA for the considerable number score boards which they supplied to our club at the beginning of the season. This was as a result of a funding grant received for custom made score boards, to be shared out amongst all the CJCA member clubs. SJCC was fortunate to receive 14 of these.

I noted at our recent end of season working bee, that we threw away very little “worn out” gear, in comparison to previous years. This is a reflection of the previous 3 or 4 years’ investment in better quality gear, which is now giving us a pay-back …. namely, a longer life span for our cricket gear inventory.

Club Size We continue to be one of the largest Junior Cricket Clubs in Christchurch, having fielded the following teams last season: 2 Girls teams 2 Kiwi Saturday morning 9 20/20 (Junior Average) 2 Super 8 (Junior Average) 8 Junior Traditional 9 Senior Traditional 4 Secondary School grade teams 36 Total

Plus 30 new players in the Friday night, Milo Have-A-Go programme Our enrolments were slightly down from the previous season’s player registrations

Rep’ Players Additional to the above mentioned girl’s representatives, the club was again well represented in the boy’s tournaments, with an all time club record number of: 46 boys playing in the CJCA regional tournament in November.

Also, in the February/March 2008 regional tournaments, the club had quite a few players selected as follows:- 39 players in the Regional teams 14 players in the Canterbury teams

Pool party The pool party was unfortunately a non-event this year, due to bad weather on the day, and no postponement date being available at Halswell pool.

Coaches Night In March, we held an end-of-season coaches night for the first time, as a way of saying thanks all the coaches for their effort and dedication during the season. We also invited the outgoing 3rd Grade Black team as that was their final year with the Junior club

Committee For many years now the junior club has been fortunate to have a strong dedicated team working on its committee. This has ensured the success of the club by providing the organisational back-up required to make it run smoothly. Although the committee has operated without a Convenor for the last two seasons, this has not affected the performance of the club, as the workload was shared amongst the committee members. However the club needs and wants this position filled for the upcoming 2008/2009 season.

Special thank you To all of the club’s volunteer coaches and team managers without whom we just couldn’t operate. To the committee for their tireless efforts in providing the support to enable the teams to perform on field. To the players for giving it their all and making us proud. To the supporters and parents who came and supported our teams each week.

SYDENHAM CRICKET CLUB TRUST

CHAIRMANS REPORT The 2007/2008 season was satisfactory from a financial viewpoint. The excess of income of $15170 exceeds the Trusts aim of $10000 annually.

The highlight of the year was the receipt of $60000 from the Harris Family Trust. On behalf of the club we record our gratitude to Graham and Linda Harris for their outstanding contribution. Graham continues to provide support in other areas and also provided the first prize in the raffle. The interest created by the investment was partly used to pay for the senior scorer and to assist Sunnie Chan who was on ACC. The club has agreed to use the ensuing seasons interest to fund the senior scorer and to provide accommodation for the Overseas Professional.

The raffle was again a success and we acknowledge the contribution from the junior section of $400. This is one activity that all club members can assist in ensuring the financial viability of the club. Our thanks to Bill Thomson for organising the raffle.

We are indebted to the continuing support of Ray & Angela Browlee Tuskers Beckenham and Russell McKenzie St Martins New World. Also we acknowledge the Support of Peter Wilson the new licensee at the Sandridge Hotel. Members are encouraged to support our Sponsors. We record our thanks to Andy Inness Cricket Express who continued their advertising support.

Last years Report included details of plans for the clubrooms. Robin Vesty Architect finalised working drawings with estimated costings. A new concept of building upstairs is now being considered and hopefully both plans will be available for sighting at the AGM. All development on the Tennis court area is now on hold pending finalisation of the clubrooms.

The Accounts for The Sydenham Park Sports Complex record the pavilion in their assets.

A Consolidated summary of the clubs activities for the year is also included.

Before depreciation an operating profit of $23037 is recorded and must be considered to be satisfactory. As advised previously cricket is an expensive sport to fund.

The Trust is confident that funding for the ensuing season will be achieved, with $44565 being received to date.

The net worth of the Club is summarised as follows Club 74448 Coaching 96710 Trust 178611 Complex 50% 166668 ------516437 ======On your behalf I express our thanks to members of the Trust David Heard, Michael Pearcy, Richie Thomas, Bill Thomson, Bert Walker. We record the untimely death of Graeme Cox who was a founding member of the Complex. Graeme's outstanding contribution in the funding and establishment of the Complex is acknowledged.

The Christchurch City Council has agreed to have one lease covering both the Clubrooms and tennis court facility. It is currently being prepared.

After some discussions the Council have allowed the Complex to have advertising on the practice area. Negotiations are underway with various interested parties regarding advertising. This will hopefully enable the complex to be self sufficient financially.

As from 1 October 2006 the complex is responsible for financing, security, telephone, insurance and repairs and maintenance. The respective clubs to be responsible in their own season for power, rubbish removal and security callouts. The insurance is continually updated to ensure adequate cover of the complex and clubs assets.
