This meant that a lot of work including the clubrooms renovation and other important activities such as social events and general maintenance to the clubrooms and practice facilities was not attended to as it should. It was also very disappointing to note the lower than expected collection of subs with at least a further $1500.00 outstanding at the end of the season. Sadly this has reflected in the clubs profit and has turned what should have been a very rewarding year financially into a result that could be best described as ordinary. The work in running the club has been left to far to few people and if club members have high expectations for the club and it's future then there will need to be a change of attitude and a serious injection of energy in the committee. On a brighter note it is with relief I can report that the council have decided in the interim not to pursue the removal of another pitch from Sydenham Park. At the eleventh hour Sydenham Rugby supported our pleas to the council and although they had on going concerns as to the safety of the cricket blocks at the start of the rugby season they agreed to support on a trial basis a turf reconditioning program suggested by Mike Robins and paid for by council. This process is due to be reviewed in September, but by all accounts rugby is satisfied with the condition of the park when they took it over in April, therefore we see no immediate issues going forward. Our club is currently enjoying a very good working relationship with rugby and I can’t stress enough to the incoming committee the importance of continuing the spirit of cooperation and goodwill. I would like to thank the efforts of David Heard, Bernie Ryan, Bruce Stewart and Canterbury cricket for their efforts in resolving matters that have long been a point of contention between the users of the park. During the winter months a group of club members namely Tony Danenberg, Kevin Moore and myself got together to try and kick start the building renovations. As the committee were unable to appoint a subcommittee the above decided to unofficially do what we could to get repairs to the clubrooms underway and investigate the concept plans produced by Robin Vesey that had been displayed in the clubrooms during the season. We have been successful in preparing quotes for the renovation of the men’s changing rooms and toilet facilities as well as some much needed repair work inside the clubrooms. This has been a lot harder job than originally anticipated as the work needed to be carried out involves not only builders but Plumbers and sparkies. The total cost of the renovations will be circa $34,000.00. At the time of writing I can confirm that these quotes have been submitted and providing they are approved we are confident that this work will be complete by the start of the season. I would like to thank John Tucker and Chad Romano for their held and advice and look forward to working with them on the upcoming project. Further to this we have received an offer from Agile Building Solutions to produce for the club free of charge an alternative concept to the one currently in circulation. It is our hope that this concept will be available for the club to view before the season gets underway. A well as this we have also had several "unofficial” meetings with council and gaming machine trust as to the level of support and financial assistance that may be available should either project proceed. The responses from both so far have been very encouraging with the council very much behind the concept of a multi sport concept on Sydenham Park and an indication from the trust approached that they were most favorable toward supporting what the dubbed a “heritage project" I am aware that club members have differing views on how the club renovations should proceed so for the meantime I don’t wish to comment further on either concept until at least the AGM when members will have an opportunity to here the views of all concerned and perhaps give the incoming committee some direction as to the preferred direction to pursue. Finally as I am retiring as president at the AGM it is a fitting time for me to sincerely thank those who have helped and supported me over the last five years. I am most grateful in particular to my colleagues on the trust, committee members and ordinary club members that have offered me their support and encouragement threw good and challenging times. I would also like to thank Ivan Thomson for all his hard work and dedication in running the committee and always availing himself to what ever task or cause that may be in the clubs interest. I feel I have been honoured to serve the club and most privileged to play and associate with such outstanding people. Michael Pearcy President MEN’S CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT As we were unable to find a Club Captain this season the job, or parts of it, fell to me. The role involved a potpourri of trying to field teams, helping with the bar, chasing up subs, and being around Sydenham Park each playing day to deal with any issues that arose. The main challenge however was to get a second grade team together each Saturday and this was largely done only with the support of players from our youth teams. In my twenty odd years of being a Club administrator I cannot remember a second side that was so bereft of players who were committed to the team. There was a core of around five or six with the rest being part-timers, although after Christmas things did improve a little. We cannot continue along this path in the coming season and we have already taken steps to ensure the second team is something the Club can be proud of. Others will have expressed views about the overall performance of our top four teams so it is not necessary for me to say anything other than that the results were disappointing. However, we do have a young group of players who have the potential to become good senior players, including two or three who were part of the team that competed in the Club Finals in Auckland. There are three things the Club needs to focus on in particular this year: re-establishing the Club spirit we enjoyed up until recently, improving the Clubrooms, and getting more help to build up our administration. Most of the other things we need are already there- an excellent coaching structure, top training facilities, and a stream of youth players coming into the club each season, albeit mostly in the lower grades. Each of these can be readily achieved if more people put up their hands to help in some way, and I sincerely hope this happens at the A.G.M. Ivan Thomson Vice President OBITUARIES During the current year three ex SCC players passed away. We extend to their families our sincere sympathy and remember them in the spirit of the great game. Ian Cummins, right hand batsman played for the Club from 1947 to 1958. His senior record was 34 matches played, 59 Innings, 1 NO, Highest score 108, Runs 888 with an average of 15.3. Ian’s father Ted was a great stalwart and supporter of the Club. Ian passed away in August. Bill Duncan, left arm medium pace bowler played for the seniors for two years 1970/71, 1971/72. Bill’s senior record was 24 matches played, wickets, 77, runs 1481, average 18.9. He took 5 wickets in an innings on three occasions. Bill’s contribution to junior cricket in Canterbury was outstanding over a prolonged period right up until his recent sudden death in August. His personality and great sense of humour will be remembered as will his expertise in working with youngsters throughout Canterbury. Bob Cunis, a NZ Representative player and coach played one match for the Presidents in 1968. The Club’s 74th Annual Report states “It was a pleasure to have Bob Cunis of Auckland (now in England with the New Zealand team), play one match by invitation at Labour Weekend. The presence did not affect the result as the match was lost, but he enjoyed the game which is what most cricketers in Presidents Grade desire, a Saturday’s cricket played in the right spirit”.
