Sydenham Cricket Club Inc SYDENHAM CRICKET CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT 2002-2003 PRESENTED AT THE 108TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING SANDRIDGE HOTEL MONDAY 25TH AUGUST 2003 SYDENHAM CRICKET CLUB OFFICE BEARERS 2002 /2003 SEASON PATRON Mr J Harliwich PRESIDENT Mr J McKenzie PAST PRESIDENT Mr A Chisnall VICE PRESIDENT Mr M Pearcy CLUB CAPTAIN Mr D Hickson WOMENS CLUB CAPTAIN Miss G Hill HONORARY SECRETARY Miss J Marsden HONORARY TREASURER Mr A Neylon HONORARY AUDITOR Mr D Gallop JUNIOR CLUB Mr J Bakker HONORARY SOLICITOR Mr P Hartland COMMITTEE Miss J Salt, Messrs T Bloomfield, M Jones, R Kelly, R Burnett, G Hooper, P McKenzie DELEGATES TO THE CCA Mr I Hill LIFE MEMBERS (Men) Messrs R Armstrong, S Burns, D Gallop, J Harliwich, G Harris, T Kerr, H King, J O’Sullivan, K Prusas, F Rice, B Salt, R Thomas, N Moorhead, W Thomson, B Walker, T White LIFE MEMBERS (Women) Mesdames R Martin, T McDonald, P Quickenden, P Carrick, Miss Z Hocking PRESIDENTS REPORT The 2002/03 season may have been my 21st year at Sydenham, but it was my first as President. I must admit that I wasn’t too sure how I would handle the role, but knew that I’d love an opportunity to put something back in to a club that I’ve enjoyed being a part of for such a long time. I have had a lot of help from different members of the club, both past and present, and am very grateful to everyone for this. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank a few people personally for their contributions to the club and to the committee. · Mike Pearcy for helping with the ongoing Senior Team issues, as well as helping again with another great Christmas event. · Glen Hooper for all his organization of the grounds and coaching. This was another huge effort this year, and a lot of time and work went in to what resulted in some wonderful playing conditions. · Dave Gallop for his continuing work to help ensure the clubs ongoing financial needs. This is always a huge job and Dave and his boys always deserve a lot of thanks for this. · Andrew Chisnall for his continuing support of me in my new role. Andrew was always available for me to come to with any questions I had, and was also eager to be involved in the club in any way possible. · Janet Marsden for her commitment to the club in both her playing attributes as well as helping out with keeping our clubrooms to a livable level. · Of course special thanks goes out to all the club members who put something back in to the club. Sydenham is made up of people who all share a love of the name as well as a love of the game. In regards to how the season went this year, once again Sydenham has seen some great results both on and off the playing field. We’ve had one of our most well known cricketing superstars Bert Walker, pass 1000 morning grade wickets, which is just amazing. I’m not too sure if it’s a good or a bad thing that he didn’t fully explain the “Horse” nickname on the national news though. Seniors had another season filled with close calls, and we found ourselves again discussing the “what ifs” and “buts”. We now have one more year up our sleeves to ensure we don’t end up playing Suburban cricket, as retaining senior status was one of the clubs top priorities for this past season, and will continue to be for the up coming 2003/04 season. The boys have all shown a strong commitment to be in the top six next year, and I applaud this attitude and wish them all the best luck. The juniors once again have had an outstanding season, with now over 50 kid’s teams making Sydenham one of the biggest junior clubs in the country. Jos and his committee have again proven themselves of organizing a great culture in our junior section, and I hope that this will continue to be a strength at Sydenham for years to come. The rest of the club had a raft of great performances, with the Goats taking a number of prizes at this years prize giving. I’m sure this will be a goal for other teams to aspire to for the next season, as there is no other feeling at prize giving to know your team is taking most of the gold. The girl’s teams again had strong performances, and I’m sure this will continue with some strong cricketers coming through these ranks too. I would like to sum up with a quote I once heard. “ More can go wrong though indecision, rather than from the wrong decision” I don’t know who said it, but I feel that this is the kind of attitude I would like the new incoming club members and committee members to bring to Sydenham in the years to come. Sydenham Cricket Club belongs to all the current playing members, as well as our illustrious past members, and I would love to encourage an atmosphere where all members feel comfortable to bring new ideas to the table. The more people we have helping, creating ideas, encouraging each other and basically supporting the club, the better place Sydenham Cricket Club will be for all of us. Good luck for the 2003/04 season everybody James McKenzie Sydenham Cricket Club President SOCIAL COMMITTEE REPORT This past season was another big hit for those who enjoy the more social side of the game of cricket. Once again the bus trips proved to be as popular as ever with both trips selling out fast. Some innovations we are looking at for this up coming year are maybe a theme or even some disposable cameras on the buses because we all know Big Brother is watching you. So get in early, make a dick of yourself, have your photo plastered all over the club rooms and have your wife say who the f*%k is that woman!!!! Bert Walkers quiz nights again scaled the heights of greatness with knowledge being thrown around like advice at a weight watchers evening. We of the social committee wish to thank Bert for his work with running the quiz, Janet Marsden for doing the yummy food and Kevin McGowan for getting us pissed oops I mean running the bar. Once again these wonderful quiz nights will continue for the up coming season. We tried a new event this year, that being a car rally. To all that took part we hope you had fun and we will be looking to do it again with a few improvements, so if you have any suggestions please let us know. The annual Xmas do was also a big hit (was it because of the bikini clad woman??) with most of the male members of the club turning out (and pointing at the bikini clad woman!!!) Luckily no complaints were laid and a good fun night was had by all (especially the social committee who had to take the bikini clad women home - ahhhh it’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it!!!) So this year look out for the advertising paraphernalia that will appear on a wall at the clubrooms near you, and get in quick!!!! COACHING AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE REPORT Convener – Glenn C Hooper Secretary – Janet Marsden Treasurer – either Dave Gallop, David Heard or Ritchie Thomas Club President - James McKenzie Club Rep – Michael Pearcy Junior Rep – Jos Bakker Secondary/Women’s Rep – Kevin McGowan Southern Districts Rep – Kevin Tucker This season saw a new committee coming together to represent the various areas of the club, and my thanks go out to all of these persons who assisted in the smooth running of this committee. The emphasis of this committee is to over see the budgets from each area of the club (grounds and coaching) and recommend to the main committee to accept these budgets to be then forwarded on to the friends to acquire the necessary funding. Then to oversee the work in these areas and form the basis for a contact when things are not working to plan. We were very fortunate to have the services of Janet Marsden as secretary, to take the minutes and the co ordination required to work this committee. We are especially grateful to the tireless work, that the Friends of Sydenham Trust puts into acquiring the funds needed to allow us to put coaching and grounds programs in to being for the benefit of all club members. Another who deserves a mention is Kevin McGowan, who almost single-handed manages to run the junior girls and boys section of the club. Kevin is always very keen to assist cricketers, sometimes not just from our club. It is well worth the five minutes or more to stop and talk to Kevin, and listen to his pearls of wisdom, an activity that a lot of our cricketers should participate in. In addition to Kevin is the vast amount of volunteers who assist Jos in the junior section during the week and every Saturday morning. Without these people considerate enough to give up their time we would find it impossible to run an effective coaching programme. This year we saw the establishment of the new number one wicket as the best senior deck in the currant CCA competition. Due to the hard work of Todd Harris and Jamil Hassan (and Michael Pearcy’s location of a Rolls Royce of a roller), they have created a wicket to be proud of, and one that will go a long way to change other teams perceptions of the wicket at Sydenham Park.

  • Australia's Smith Torments India Mccullum Whips Sri Lanka
SPORTS SATURDAY, DECEMBER 27, 2014 McCullum whips Sri Lanka CHRISTCHURCH: New Zealand’s big-hitting skipper Brendon McCullum was hailed yesterday for his rollicking 195 to dra- matically turn the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka. His dominating 134-ball performance which led New Zealand to 429-7 at stumps also carried special significance for the 8,000 people who packed Christchurch’s Hagley Oval. They were looking for an outstanding performance to mark the return of Test cricket to the earthquake-battered city and the signs were against them until McCullum strode to the crease with New Zealand at 88-3. The wicket was green and McCullum, who lost the toss, was forced to bat on a pitch where he desperately wanted to bowl. But within a session and a half he had Sri Lanka on the ropes at the oval, a venue purpose built after the city’s former cricket ground at Lancaster Park was destroyed in the devas- tating 2011 earthquakes which claimed 185 lives. McCullum spreadeagled the field, smashing 18 fours and 11 sixes, in a record-breaking performance that New Zealand batting coach Craig McMillan rated the best opening day in New Zealand Test history. “It was a very special day. It was the sort of day this venue and this city deserved with what they’ve gone through,” McMillan said. As McCullum bludgeoned the bowling, he took just 74 balls to crack the fastest century in New Zealand Test history and became the first New Zealander to score 1,000 runs in a calendar year.

Thanks to all who came and participated in the discussions. It feels like the changes we are making to work in a person- driven way are gaining momentum, and it was great to hear about the exciting community opportunities people are already involved in. Amarillo, Texas. Dunedin model railway exhibition 2018 Over the weekend of 11th to 14th May the SkillWise model making group again attended the Dunedin train show at the Taieri Bowling Club in Mosgiel. Gary Buchanan, John Pike, Kevin Horne and Stephen Cooper along with Gavin and Stan and volunteers Doug and Paul set up and operated the layout using USA Free-Mo modules. We had the largest layout at 12m long. It performed well over the weekend and we had some nice comments from the public, including two Kiwis who had lived in Amarillo and a woman from Texas who thought we had travelled from Texas rather than Christchurch! Some of us also helped Kevin Prince operate his East German layout. After the show closed on Saturday we visited the American Modular Groups’ clubroom and layout, then attended the dinner for the organisers, exhibitors and traders at the Holy Cross Centre restaurant. An excellent meal with huge portions so big that nobody went back for seconds! Gavin is moving on from SkillWise to progress his career in a new organisation.

  • 4Th-8Th January 2021 – Waimakariri and Selwyn
58th SOUTH ISLAND PRIMARY SCHOOLS CRICKET TOURNAMENT 4th-8th January 2021 – Waimakariri and Selwyn Thank You to our GOLD sponsors Welcome to Canterbury Country On behalf of the Canterbury Cricket Association it is my pleasure to welcome all thirty teams to this, the 58th South Island Primary School’s Tournament to be played throughout Waimakariri and Selwyn. All South Island provinces have made the trip to our district for this week. As well as the players, it is a warm welcome to the coaches, managers, parents, supporters, administrators and sponsors of these teams. This is the fifth occasion that Canterbury Country has hosted this tournament and we look forward to another wonderful week of cricket, and the building of friendships. From this tournament over the past 57 years a number of players have gone up through the age grade groups to represent their provinces, and even on to the highest honours of representing New Zealand. Whilst it is healthy for players to have aspirations and dreams of playing for the Blackcaps in the future, I’d like to encourage all adults involved with this tournament to positively praise the effort the players put into matches throughout the week, rather than reverting to focusing on performances, stats and results. Playing in this tournament gives players the opportunity to represent their province and to play alongside players from other clubs or schools. The friendships formed in this tournament will hopefully be long standing as the players continue to play cricket into the future. A tournament such as this could not be run without the help of a large number of volunteers.

  • Developing Teamwork at New Zealand Cricket1
Developing Teamwork at New Zealand Cricket1 A programme to improve team working in the New Zealand men’s cricket team, the BlackCaps, hit the headlines in 2008 following the resignation of coach John Bracewell. Leading Teams New Zealand was an organisation which aimed to improve team performance through a range of teamwork and leadership programmes. In addition to working with New Zealand Cricket, Leading Teams had worked with Super 14 rugby teams the Hurricanes and Chiefs, as well as the New Zealand Breakers basketball team. Leading Teams was hired by John Bracewell, who stood down in November 2008 and was replaced by Northern Districts coach Andy Moles. Immediately following his appointment, Moles announced that the role of Leading Teams had been placed “under review” and would be “diluted”.2 Leading Teams aimed to “align teams by creating shared vision and behaviours that empower all members of the team to engage in open dialogue. We develop leaders who model and defend the behaviours that the team identifies as non-negotiable.”3 Its Performance Improvement Programme (PIP), which it said was a “unique and visionary training methodology”,4 covered five key areas: coaching and mentoring, effective leadership, aligning teams, personal development and organisational development. Aligning teams involved understanding how culture and values affected team performance, analysing the current culture of the team, creating a desired vision and developing desired behaviour within the team. It also involved peer performance assessment and it was this aspect which created controversy within the BlackCaps. Former BlackCap Craig McMillan said that during the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies, five players would be assessed after each game.
