PRESIDENTS REPORT

The 2002/03 season may have been my 21st year at Sydenham, but it was my first as President. I must admit that I wasn’t too sure how I would handle the role, but knew that I’d love an opportunity to put something back in to a club that I’ve enjoyed being a part of for such a long time. I have had a lot of help from different members of the club, both past and present, and am very grateful to everyone for this. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank a few people personally for their contributions to the club and to the committee.

· Mike Pearcy for helping with the ongoing Senior Team issues, as well as helping again with another great Christmas event.

· Glen Hooper for all his organization of the grounds and coaching. This was another huge effort this year, and a lot of time and work went in to what resulted in some wonderful playing conditions.

· Dave Gallop for his continuing work to help ensure the clubs ongoing financial needs. This is always a huge job and Dave and his boys always deserve a lot of thanks for this.

· Andrew Chisnall for his continuing support of me in my new role. Andrew was always available for me to come to with any questions I had, and was also eager to be involved in the club in any way possible.

· Janet Marsden for her commitment to the club in both her playing attributes as well as helping out with keeping our clubrooms to a livable level.

· Of course special thanks goes out to all the club members who put something back in to the club. Sydenham is made up of people who all share a love of the name as well as a love of the game.

In regards to how the season went this year, once again Sydenham has seen some great results both on and off the playing field. We’ve had one of our most well known cricketing superstars Bert Walker, pass 1000 morning grade , which is just amazing. I’m not too sure if it’s a good or a bad thing that he didn’t fully explain the “Horse” nickname on the national news though.

Seniors had another season filled with close calls, and we found ourselves again discussing the “what ifs” and “buts”. We now have one more year up our sleeves to ensure we don’t end up playing Suburban cricket, as retaining senior status was one of the clubs top priorities for this past season, and will continue to be for the up coming 2003/04 season. The boys have all shown a strong commitment to be in the top six next year, and I applaud this attitude and wish them all the best luck.

The juniors once again have had an outstanding season, with now over 50 kid’s teams making Sydenham one of the biggest junior clubs in the country. Jos and his committee have again proven themselves of organizing a great culture in our junior section, and I hope that this will continue to be a strength at Sydenham for years to come.

The rest of the club had a raft of great performances, with the Goats taking a number of prizes at this years prize giving. I’m sure this will be a goal for other teams to aspire to for the next season, as there is no other feeling at prize giving to know your team is taking most of the gold. The girl’s teams again had strong performances, and I’m sure this will continue with some strong cricketers coming through these ranks too.

I would like to sum up with a quote I once heard. “ More can go wrong though indecision, rather than from the wrong decision”

I don’t know who said it, but I feel that this is the kind of attitude I would like the new incoming club members and committee members to bring to Sydenham in the years to come. Sydenham Cricket Club belongs to all the current playing members, as well as our illustrious past members, and I would love to encourage an atmosphere where all members feel comfortable to bring new ideas to the table. The more people we have helping, creating ideas, encouraging each other and basically supporting the club, the better place Sydenham Cricket Club will be for all of us.

Good luck for the 2003/04 season everybody

James McKenzie Sydenham Cricket Club President

SOCIAL COMMITTEE REPORT

This past season was another big hit for those who enjoy the more social side of the game of cricket. Once again the bus trips proved to be as popular as ever with both trips selling out fast. Some innovations we are looking at for this up coming year are maybe a theme or even some disposable cameras on the buses because we all know Big Brother is watching you. So get in early, make a dick of yourself, have your photo plastered all over the club rooms and have your wife say who the f*%k is that woman!!!!

Bert Walkers quiz nights again scaled the heights of greatness with knowledge being thrown around like advice at a weight watchers evening. We of the social committee wish to thank Bert for his work with running the quiz, Janet Marsden for doing the yummy food and Kevin McGowan for getting us pissed oops I mean running the bar. Once again these wonderful quiz nights will continue for the up coming season.

We tried a new event this year, that being a car rally. To all that took part we hope you had fun and we will be looking to do it again with a few improvements, so if you have any suggestions please let us know.

The annual Xmas do was also a big hit (was it because of the bikini clad woman??) with most of the male members of the club turning out (and pointing at the bikini clad woman!!!) Luckily no complaints were laid and a good fun night was had by all (especially the social committee who had to take the bikini clad women home - ahhhh it’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it!!!)

So this year look out for the advertising paraphernalia that will appear on a wall at the clubrooms near you, and get in quick!!!!

COACHING AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE REPORT

Convener – Glenn C Hooper Secretary – Janet Marsden Treasurer – either Dave Gallop, David Heard or Ritchie Thomas Club President - James McKenzie Club Rep – Michael Pearcy Junior Rep – Jos Bakker Secondary/Women’s Rep – Kevin McGowan Southern Districts Rep – Kevin Tucker

This season saw a new committee coming together to represent the various areas of the club, and my thanks go out to all of these persons who assisted in the smooth running of this committee.

The emphasis of this committee is to over see the budgets from each area of the club (grounds and coaching) and recommend to the main committee to accept these budgets to be then forwarded on to the friends to acquire the necessary funding. Then to oversee the work in these areas and form the basis for a contact when things are not working to plan.

We were very fortunate to have the services of Janet Marsden as secretary, to take the minutes and the co ordination required to work this committee.

We are especially grateful to the tireless work, that the Friends of Sydenham Trust puts into acquiring the funds needed to allow us to put coaching and grounds programs in to being for the benefit of all club members.

Another who deserves a mention is Kevin McGowan, who almost single-handed manages to run the junior girls and boys section of the club. Kevin is always very keen to assist cricketers, sometimes not just from our club. It is well worth the five minutes or more to stop and talk to Kevin, and listen to his pearls of wisdom, an activity that a lot of our cricketers should participate in.

In addition to Kevin is the vast amount of volunteers who assist Jos in the junior section during the week and every Saturday morning. Without these people considerate enough to give up their time we would find it impossible to run an effective coaching programme.

This year we saw the establishment of the new number one as the best senior deck in the currant CCA competition. Due to the hard work of Todd Harris and Jamil Hassan (and Michael Pearcy’s location of a Rolls Royce of a roller), they have created a wicket to be proud of, and one that will go a long way to change other teams perceptions of the wicket at Sydenham Park. My only wish is that more of our teams could enjoy the benefits of playing on such a surface.

Having experienced the other two grass wickets on the Park at first hand, it is my belief that these have also improved and are now at a high level of presentation, which goes well to reflect on the club as a whole. If only we did not have the myriad of touch lines on the park to assist with the confusion on Saturday’s.

With ever increasing numbers in the club overall, the training facilities are now at an overloaded phase. We require more practice areas to assist in the general skill development of all players. To this end we are in the process of acquiring the funds to put down three new artificial practice lanes in place of the out dated currant ones in front of the clubrooms. This should provide better quality practice facilities as well as protecting those that wish to stand at the back of the net and observe.

As well as the new artificial practice wickets we are looking at the possibility of our premier teams being able to practice on top quality grass wickets for at least one practice per week. With a bit of tweaking and a little more pressure placed on the grounds staff we will hopefully be able to place all premier teams on a roster of good grass wickets.

In addition we are in the process of acquiring the necessary funding to replace the artificial wicket over by MacDonald’s. As you will all agree it has become very out dated and in some cases almost dangerous. However it is desire for the majority of secondary schools cricket (under 15 and below) to be played on a constant surface such as an artificial.

Another new area being developed this up coming season will be the introduction of a pre season programme for a selected number of young players with association with the Club, either from existing Sydenham secondary teams or those who have gone through the juniors and are now at a local high school.

This will introduce these youngsters back into the Sydenham fold whilst providing them with cricketing skill development. This is the forerunner for a Sydenham styled academy that will be fronted by Bob Carter, which we are in the process of establishing that will see a number of our juniors being placed into a coaching programme for twelve months of the year.

Lastly we are in a climate of change, the funding issue and senior men’s competitions are under going vast changes.

The funding issue is largely out of our hands, albeit for the strenuous efforts of the Trust to acquire the funding necessary for us to implement the programs we see as a necessity.

However when we look to our secondary schools teams and the increase that we have seen in this area we are not far away from being able to provide cricket to all Sydenham members from age 5 to 45+. This means that we are in a unique position as far as new members coming through are concerned.

Within the next two years we should be able to totally replenish the shortages in the adult section of the club (both men’s and women’s) with players from with in the secondary section of the club. Thus one of the main emphasizes for this committee is to develop the programs to lift the skills and techniques of our juniors and secondary schools players as a priority, and thus indirectly effect the future of the adults section of the club.

I look forward to an exciting season ahead. From a committee perspective we have only just started the journey and constantly need input form all sectors of the club to assist us in the implementation of these programs.

Yours in Cricket Glenn C Hooper Convener

COMMUNITY CRICKET CO-ORDINATOR REPORT

Introduction: The New Zealand Cricket innovation of Community Cricket has been highly successful and well received. I’d like to think that the Sydenham Programme has been no exception. There have been many new ‘ideas’ that have been introduced that I have chosen to focus on the major areas.

1. The Planning Process: Both the main Club and Developmental Strategic Plans were developed and implemented during the year. The processes followed were consultative and have given the Club a clear focus on the important issues. 2. Coach-the-Coach: There are many young people that wish to play cricket. The biggest obstacle is the lack of adults to coach, supervise or manage teams. 4 courses were run pre-season and this will be a major focus during the next year. 3. Super 8: This competition has become so successful that teams from afar a field as Darfield are competing. This form of the game certainly has a place in the ‘market’ and there will be even more of a push on this competition next year. 4. Cricket Excellence Programme: The Under 15 Academy that was run during the third term was a first and it was pleasing to see so many of the young players who went through the Cricket Excellence Programme excelling during the season. 5. Relationship building: Through the Community Cricket Programme Sydenham has been able to develop a number of strategic ‘business partners’. To name a few: The University of Canterbury, Sport Canterbury, Canterbury Sport and the Cancer Society. Strong relationships have been built up with the Intermediate and Secondary Schools in the area.

I have thoroughly enjoyed being involved in the Programme and have been most grateful to all the support and encouragement I have received. Sydenham is laying strong foundations for a very prosperous future.

Nigel Marsh Community Cricket Co-ordinator

OBITUARIES

It is with deep regret that the Club records the deaths of John Larter and Roy Bluett.

John Larter played senior cricket during the 1970’s and more recently in the 1990’s in the Presidents Grade side. John also captained the senior side. His senior statistics are as follows:

Matches Innings Highest Score Runs Average 50’s 100’s 106 181 12 149 3581 21.20 17 1

John also took 99 senior wickets (average 26.60) and 60 catches. He was also a member of the club committee.

Roy Bluett was the senior scorer in the late 1950’s.

Our sincere sympathies and condolences go to any club members who have suffered bereavements.

1000 not out, howzat?

The motto of Sydenham stalwart Bert Walker is Blood, Sweat and Beers.

A little of the first mentioned (when he crashed into a tree while fielding, cracking ribs), plenty of the second, and a liberal dose of the third have been behind Walker’s climb to the monumental milestone, achieved last weekend, of 1000 wickets in morning grade cricket since 1975-76.

In the intervening 28 seasons, the indefatigable Walker has given his all, playing chiefly for Old Collegians and then his beloved Sydenham,

The 47 year old Walker could not be tempted to drift down to President’s grade where most over 40’s find a home.

“There are two main things I ask myself when I reassess if I want to keep going. One is am I still enjoying it, which I am, and the other is whether my form justifies me holding a place.”

Walker’s testing medium pacers earn a big tick on the second score with 45 wickets in second grade this season costing just 12 apiece.

Many players, young enough to be his children, have succumbed to his ‘gentle seamers’ as Walker describes them. In recent years, Walker has bowled to the sons of some of the fathers he played against in an earlier era.

Walker’s landmark achievement arrived on Saturday when he took his first wicket of three against Marist.

A player with a statistical bent, who runs popular sports quiz evenings, Walker has a record of every season’s wicket-taking returns, for richer or poorer.

“We will get a full audit done again from old scorebooks, scrapbooks and annual reports but I’ve triple checked it and believe it’s right.”

Walker spent his early seasons with Old Collegians before being lured to Sydenham Park – dubbed Flagon Park, he quipped, ‘because of its seductive social atmosphere.’

Walker spent a period during the 1980’s playing at senior level and claimed 107 scalps – he also has 859 from second grade and 36 from third grade.

Walker contends that he still has the body of a 22 year old, having missed few matches, apart from the hairstyle.

“And that’s just from too many overs into the wind and too many decisions turned down.”

Walker’s longest spell on the sideline came from the cracked ribs when he hit a tree at Sydenham Park diving to save a boundary.

“A case of youthful over-commitment which hasn’t been repeated,” he quipped.

“A few things have changed over the years, obviously the late Friday nights are a thing of the past. I try to stretch every day and have a bowl during the week in the nets to keep the motor running.”

And the motor looks good for a few seasons yet but Walker is reluctant to commit himself to a new target of 1000 second-grade wickets.

“That’s about 50 a season in a good summer and I don’t know if I have that amount of time left in me. I don’t want to be hanging around keeping a promising young player out.”

Walker’s wonderful performance and longevity ensures that the young players he rubs shoulders with, year in and out, have an ideal cricketing role model to learn from.

SENIOR MEN TEAM REPORT

In the term of wins and losses the 2002/03 cricket season was not a very successful year for Sydenham Seniors, but in terms of the way we applied ourselves and played cricket it was. This was mainly due to the introduction of Nigel Marsh. He really changed the attitudes of the players, to the way we trained, played, and approached the game.

We finished seventh out of nine teams. But this could quite easily have been fifth, if we had not had the match against Burnside rained out, or dropped our bundle against Old Collegians.

This season introduced the new found talents of Andrew Griffin, a very promising opening batsman, and hard hitting lower order batsman/bowler Willie Burrett who showed a lot of potential for future seasons.

Again, seasoned campaigners such as Ben Larter, Craig Ross and Leo Georgiardis had some memorable moments. But inconsistency was the key to our low placing in the competition.

Highlights of the season were the last ball win against Riccarton in the one day round on Sydenham number one, a great team effort, along with the last over win against Lancaster Park/Woolston in the same round. But of course you cannot look past beating the eventual winners, High School Old Boys, in convincing fashion. This showed the potential of our team beating three of the top five teams, but losing to the lower placed teams cost us dearly.

Individual performances were, Willie Burrett hitting 56 off 30 balls with 40 of these coming off the bowling of Craig McMillan, who never bowled again in that game. Ben Larter, dismissing Craig McMillan, and . A great achievement. Craig Ross for demolishing High School Old Boys with 6-16 off 9.3 overs. Also his taking 6-23 off 9 overs against Marist.

Hopefully the 2003/04, possibly the last season for Sydenham in the senior competition, will be a successful one.

2ND GRADE TEAM REPORT

As I sit in my car on a cold winters morning I take pause to reflect on another season of cricket, and as I look back there are things that fill me with pride and satisfaction and other things that just f*%ked me off. Off the field the season began appallingly with some idiot deciding that all those players that actually wanted to give up their Saturdays to play cricket should in fact have to wait until 12pm to start and yet those playing third grade could start at 10.30am and play more cricket. To make matters worse the scheduled close of play was extended to 6.40pm, meaning in some cases games not finishing until much later, one example was against the east Shirley budgies when the game didn’t finish until 7.45 pm.

Lunch too was a victim of lunacy being moved to 2pm and shortened to 20 min. This means that players had to leave the field, get any gear off, get lunch then get gear back on and be ready to start playing again in just 20 min !!! needless to say lunch sometimes run overtime. Thankfully some sanity prevailed part way through the season and lunch got extended to 30 min, oh the luxury!!

On the food front the first of my thank you's goes to Mrs Romano. On behalf of myself, the rest of my team and all those that enjoyed your wonderful lunches we salute you for a job superbly done. The food was so good that some players had to take a roll or some cake back out onto the field, but this didn’t seem to diminish fielding ability as Greg Airns showed when he pulled in a left handed slip catch first ball after lunch with a chicken roll still hanging out of his mouth!!

Also I would like to thank Todd Harris and Jamil Hassan both of whom did sterling work on preparing the grounds and hope that they continue on in the years to come. Also a big thanks to Nigel Marsh (who thanks to his work with the young third grade team) provided us with many a talented player when we required, all of who equipped themselves with great promise.

2ND GRADE : A SCHOOL REPORT

The following is a list of those players who formed the core of 2nds for the year 2002-03

ADAM NEYLON : Captained (mostly). Proved to be a very good leader not quite in the tsun tzu mode but capable none the less. Tended to over bowl himself. ADRIAN DAWSON : Rock solid opening batter one of the most technically correct batsmen in the team, however was also the worst runner between the wickets in the team. Maybe it’s the way he runs? BEN WILLIAMS : Had the most unique style of batting, who will ever forget when we were 16 for 6 and in trouble Ben walks out and snots his first ball over the bowlers head for a four. Also provided the team with much needed ‘ADULT’ guidance. BERT WALKER : Another year defying the odds taking a staggering 52 wickets including snaring his 1000th morning grade wicket, still some concerns when left alone with some of the younger members of the team. BRAD MOORE : Match winner with either bat or ball, would have been nice to have him for a few more games. Needs to buy a new alarm clock as his current one doesn’t seem to work to well. DARREN HICKSON : Scored the most amount of runs in 2-day cricket and almost the least amount in 1-dayers. Should concentrate on not getting frustrated when confronted with the incompetence of others. GLENN PURDON : Once he found his feet Glenn proved his ability with bat and gloves. Will probably feel he should have more of a turn at the bowling crease. GREG AIRNS : The team’s most capable batsmen. Greg proved to also be the second best slip fielder in the team. Would do better if he ate his lunch before he back into the field. JAMES BERRYMAN : Good all-round performer, especially in the field where if he put as much effort into diving to field the ball as he does into diving to avoid chasing after the ball he would have roved to be a much bigger asset in the field. JOHN GRIFFEN : Provided the team with the backbone of our stunning 1-day win against the budgies. Chasing an almost impossible 325 john stroked and smashed his way to 121*. When he wanted to turn up he was forced to be reckoned with. RYAN BURNETT: In patches could provide a very good bowler and backed it up with some very useful knocks with the bat. The most likely in our team to get R.S.I. (spin those disks!!!) and end up with a hearing aid. TIM BLOOMFIELD : Always keen to be known as senior after his stunning senior debut as a No.11 specialist fielder. A lot of potential as a bowler if he applied himself and concentrated on retaining bodily fluids.

To all those players who also played for us I wish to convey a large thank you for with out you we wouldn’t have been able to field a team of 11, in particular to Sean McGowan, Danny Dowds, Hayden Martin, Ross Martin, Simon? Pitcher, Lee Percasky, and James? Davidson all who are from our young third grade team I wish to say cheers and I see a bright future for you and the club with some good talented players coming through.

One of our special moments this season was the innings of one Willie Burrett who upon being dropped from seniors walked to the wicket with our team at 55 for 5 and not even forcing HSOB bat again, he then produced the most amazing innings of power hitting I have ever witnessed hitting an incredible 15 sixes and 11 fours and in just 1 ½ hours scored a club season high of 150 n.o.

And for the final chapter I come to perhaps the most important event that happened this year and that is not Adam giving up the accountants position on the committee or in fact Adrian actually getting a woman to come and watch him play or in fact Gregs average being double when his girlfriend turned up to watch him I am of course talking about Bert ‘the lovingly call me horse’ Walker taking his 1000th morning grade victim. No-one at Sydenham has done more for the club or cricket as a whole, with no thought for himself. Bert has tirelessly run raffles, his quiz nights are legendary and he constantly provides support and counsel for his team and all those who ask. So to Bert I say congratulations and it has been my honour to have played alongside you.

5TH GRADE TEAM REPORT

Played 19 Won 9 Lost 9 N/R 1

Sydenham 5th grade finish the middle of the table, in a competition that really we should’ve performed better in. The main problems for the team, was not having a consistent team each week. Going from the extremes of having up to 14 players available some weeks, to being 2 to 3 short others. The teams performances, went from one extreme to another is well. Some weeks beating admittedly some muppet teams, by 100 odd runs. to only play poorly against the more competitive teams who finish above us.

The team’s strength was certainly the bowling, at times our pace attack would leave the opposition in tatters. Phil, Matt, Gareth & Paul all had a fantastic season with the ball, each picking up five wicket bags. Matt loose tops the honours board with 7/19. Unfortunately they were let down by not having a consistent 5th & 6th bowling option, but mostly the dismal fielding effort. Two times this season, bowlers had their hat tricks ruined, by the keeper dropping what were easy chances. Both keepers will not be named. It would be fair to say most of the games we lost were due to the fielding. The bowlers deserved better for their work.

Our batting could be described as inconsistent. Batsman getting starts was never a problem, staying at the crease for a long period of time, was. Scores of 10-20 should’ve really been 30+, a lot of missed opportunities. Tuppy Himiona was one who did spend time at the crease, scoring 472 run including his first club hundred (114). Matt Loose provided the batting highlight of the season with (129 not out) off 56 balls 10 Six’s 12 fours.

Other season highlights that come too mind were, beating East Shirley with seven players. Phil & Bede’s mid wicket collision, both guilty of ball watching. The game had to be stop for five minutes, as fielders & the batting team couldn’t stop laughing. James sledging to opposition & own captain. Rob going the whole season without bowling himself.

In all, a mostly enjoyable season on & off the field. Thanks to all the fill-in players, there were many. Sub fielders from seniors & 2nd grade for giving up their time. Kevin, Nigel & Ivan for the hours spent on the phone getting those fill-in players.

SUBURBAN 3C GRADE TEAM REPORT

Played 21 Won 12 Lost 7 Tied 1 N/R 1

Another fairly successful year where the team managed a creditable 4th place out of 10 teams. While we beat every other side at least once, we also managed to live up to our nickname on a few other occasions including our “day of shame”, where from the sound position of 13 for 2, we were all out for 17!! This turned out to be the only occasion where we won the toss and put the opposition into bat. On all other occasions we backed our batsman to score enough runs to let our bowlers finish the job. Most times this worked although in a couple of games the pitch seemed more suitable for rugby than cricket.

Some new innovations this year included team beer (&coke) after the game, MVP points and the toilet seat. The toilet seat was awarded weekly to the most deserving player (i.e. the biggest cock up). For such individuals that dropped catches, kicking the ball over the boundary and giving batsman send offs of Glen McGrath quality. The toilet seat and MVP points led to some vigorous after match discussion and more than one rock, paper, scissors tiebreakers.

Congratulations to Craig Campbell for being player of the year and Richard McKernan who picked up trophies for most runs, most catches and best alrounder.

Players: Ahmad Solid middle order batsman who while not as consistent as last season could still hit the ball long and hard. When he chose to however, he also earned the toilet seat one week for playing out two consecutive maiden overs at the end of an innings when the slog was on. Unfortunately Ahmad moved to Australia for work reasons just after Christmas where we wish him all the best.

Jon Bennett Opened the batting or at three if we had a special guest opener. Laser eye surgery over the off season promised much, but this was offset by too many beers and pies, meaning an average season with the bat. His hard shiny head was especially useful for deflecting cricket balls both batting and in the field.

Craig Campbell New to Christchurch from Oamaru, Craig proved a genuine all rounder with his hard hitting and swing bowling. With a strike rate of over 100 for the season including 70 off 32 balls (batting at no 9) against the top Hornby team. His boundary hitting more than compensated for his running between the wickets. Will need to improve his form on mystery bus trips to include being allowed inside pubs next year.

Johno Campbell A ringer for the team, he ended up playing half a season. Bowling off 7 or 8 paces Johno used shoulders, built up from many years propping the scrum, to fire the ball 22 yards at a fair pace and with good accuracy (most of the time). He gave us a second genuine wicket taking option alongside Lionel and used as a left-handed batting option at number 11.

Andy Chisnall Has taken over from Simon as the team’s number one hospital case. Knee and back injuries severely hampered Andy’s season both batting and fielding. Get these fixed and I’m sure he will be back next year in his all round capacity.

Stacy Garrett Our top wicket taker for the season with 36 wickets and at one stage neck and neck with Bert Walker in the race for most wickets for the club. While hit around on some occasions, Stacey could bowl out balls. Picked up his first 5-wicket bag for the club after many years of trying and always a safe and energetic fielder.

Tim Jellie AKA the panther. Tim did it all this season. Batted, bowled, fielded, kept wickets, bought pairs of strippers underwear along to games, came up with Heineken when it was his turn on beers and nearly hit his first ever six. Had his best success opening the batting and his worst led to volunteering for the toilet seat.

Nadeem Khan Our sole remaining Pakistani (down from 3 last year). Nadeem played some good knocks in the middle order especially when taking the attack to the bowlers. While not the most confidant against the quickest bowlers he could dispatch the rest helped by having the best bat in the team. Greatly improved in the field this year.

Richard McKernan Had a great year starting as an alrounder in the middle order and then mainly batting at the top of the innings after he came back from Greece. With a season strike rate over 100, Richard didn’t muck around. An outstanding fielder and expert sledger he thoroughly deserved the three trophies he won this year. Also our number one recruiter of ring in players on Friday nights.

Kevin McLintock Another newcomer to the club. Kevin added more variety to our bowling with his left arm medium pace. Sometimes he had too much variety, which led to some short spells, but when he kept the ball up he bowled well often without reward. Finished the season in fine form with career best 6-42 against the top side. He came up with a top toilet seat moment when after being hit for six he doubled his run up only to be hit twice as far for six that next ball.

Ollie Needham Wicket keeper and middle order batsman who always gave 100%. Very athletic behind the stumps (and with some of our bowling you need to be) and with the exception of one game, a very safe catcher. A solid batsman who was very strong off his legs.

Lionel Schulte Started the season as an opening batsman but swapped to a bowler after Christmas. While nicknamed “Chris Harris” for his batting he showed he could still be “” with the ball when he wanted to. While gifted a few early wickets, Lionel could still get the good batsman out while not going for very many runs. Chief scribe of the toilet seat at the end of each day’s play.

6TH GRADE TEAM REPORT

Well it seems the new season is fast approaching, and I am nowhere near ready for it. I look forward to the year and can only hope that the season is good to all teams.

Last season the boys had some coaching from TAS (Tauseff), this they enjoyed a great deal. He showed them a lot in the time he had with them. I can only hope that this season, we do get to play on grass more than in the past. Last season more than half of the games were on Polo grounds, “artificial tracks” I have yet to confirm with the guys, but I think we again will have the entire team back. I also hope that the nets, a major problem from last season are repaired and ready for the new season. As the 7th grade became 6th grade the teams also changed. The teams that we played were in some cases, players of a more senior level in age and experience. This was not a problem as such, the games were a little harder, but still enjoyable.

I spoke to some of the other team members and found that some of the players were top grade players not wanting the pressure of 1st or 2nd grade cricket. John Hawes our main strike bowler took 30 + wickets for the season, Adrian Fastier scored 320 runs, Michael Taylor our spin attack with the coaching from TAS improved a great deal. He bowled only toward the end of the season and took 11 wickets in about 20 overs.

So over all an improved performance by all the players. Is there any professional coaching this season, as TAS was great value when he was here? Also last season we were told our own wicket to use on practice nights and in games. This did not happen, we were given a junior track to play on and could not use it for practice.

PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT

Well another season has passed with a modest return of 7 wins and a bottom half of the table finish to show for our efforts.

It was another season where we were competitive in most games and with more consistent batting performances would have achieved a better return.

Tom White earned the Player of the Year award with a string of consistent performances with the boot resulting in an average in excess of 40. Unfortunately Tom’s availability was not as consistent with his body being the latest to begin succumbing to old age.

Finally I would like to thank those who turned out over the season and hope to see everyone again in the coming season.

WOMEN’S FIRST RESERVE GRADE TEAM REPORT

The grade was again played in two parts with a mix of 45 over one-day games and two- day games. However, because there was a bye in the grade, a random one day draw and several days lost with rain it was difficult to keep the momentum going and a complete round of two-day cricket was not achieved with only two days play in the last six weeks. The promise that had been shown the previous year, particularly at the end of the season during two-day cricket, did not eventuate. It turned our to be a very average season for the team with little in the way of highlights. Kelly had two good knocks of 96 and 74* and Greer and Jane battered consistently throughout. A lack of depth in the bowling made it difficult to restrict the opposition to a reasonable target, adding pressure on the batting. Greer and Jane undertook the bulk of the bowling with Lara and Kelly assisting and improving throughout the season.

Janet’s return was appreciated on and off the field, Mel left for Nelson after Christmas and Erin returned from overseas. It was good to see Katie back and just as competitive as ever. The team wishes Mel well in her teaching career and I am sure that Nelson cricket will benefit from her presence. Sarah departed for foreign shores and will be missed around the Syd’s scene, playing and assisting with the 4th grade girls.

The 2003/2004 cricket season is not far away and with some up and coming talent in second grade I am sure it will be a season for the club to remember.

WOMEN’S 2ND GRADE TEAM REPORT

Although we finished second in this competition, I feel that we let ourselves down. The competition was ours for the taking, but due to the bowlers’ inability to bowl full and straight often enough, we let the opposition off the hook and lost games which we should have won easily. There were occasions when the batting wasn’t all that it should have been, but generally we managed to amass what should have been enough runs to see us through comfortably. The girls lacked direction and, on occasion, the “want to win” attitude of the previous season, which saw them take the title without a loss.

That said, there were highlights and pleasingly, there are some very good players coming through from 3rd grade, to fill vacancies for the forthcoming season.

Among the highlights were: The form of Rosie McKimmie who never stopped trying whether with bat or ball and who was dynamic in the field

The solid starts to the batting by Jacqui Rose & Rebecca Heenan, (Rebecca scored 482 runs, ave. 80.22)

The emergence of several new players from Mid-Canty. who all added value to the team & ultimately the club.

The return to bowling form of Fran Quinn after suffering from back pain & being misdiagnosed as having a mixed action by someone who should have known better. This resulted in her having to be brought back slowly to the bowling crease when more was required of her in match situations. However, all’s well that ends well.

The willingness of those from 1st Reserve & 3rd Grade to fill in at a moment’s notice & acquit themselves well.

The season highlight, had to be the last game against E-S when we batted first & Rebecca & Kelly Samson put on over 200 for the 1st wicket before retiring each with an unbeaten hundred. This was done in under 30 overs & at innings end we were 276/2, then bowled the opposition out for120. As a footnote to this, the East-Shirley coach congratulated us and commented on what a really exciting game it had been. How anyone could think of this as an exciting game when his team has just been absolutely rogered, escapes me.

Overall, a reasonably successful season, but one which could and should have been better. Still, there’s always next season. I can’t wait.

WHAT FOR THE FUTURE OF WOMEN’S CRICKET?

The Sydenham Cricket Club continues to promote women’s’ cricket and as a result of this policy maintains its’ players as well as bringing new players through. Because of this we are rapidly growing in depth and strength and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. We have a pipeline to the Selwyn House School for Girls, which will add to our numbers. In short we are doing the right things because we are progressive & we have a plan for the future.

However, there is a huge drop in the playing numbers in other clubs. E-S lost an entire team from the 2001-02 season. They combined their 2nd Grade team with extra players from LPW yet still only had 8-9 players for that team. St Albans 2nd Grade seldom has a full team, Riccarton only ever has eight players in their 2nd Grade team, which is the only one they have below Seniors. Their Senior team defaulted games last season as they rely on Academy players to fill the ranks and they are not always available. LPW while only having two teams, is trying to redress this problem through recruitment and coaching but are still some way off yet. Old Colls combined with Country to boost their playing strength & now have three teams but still need more to add depth and strength. Harewood have one & a half teams and appear likely to lose players while BWU have one team.

The number of teams playing, is down by a third on two years ago yet the CCA seem either unable or unwilling to heed the advice given it by the people close to the action. We who coach women’s /girls and talk to others on a regular basis who do the same, know what the problems are and how to redress them, yet our views are rejected by the administrators. The CCA seem bent on sticking to their policy of having four Senior teams only & ignoring those players performing in lower graded teams who are perfectly capable of excelling at a higher level. With this policy is it any wonder that Canterbury has not won a title of any sort for some time? Sadly, it appears as though this will continue.

The shortsightedness of those officials & those playing at Senior level who feel threatened by anyone who may usurp their favoured positions is staggering and if it continues can only lead to more players leaving the game.

If a club suggests that they have or can get sufficient playing strength to enter a senior team, one would think that they would be welcomed with open arms as competition can only be a good thing for the game. Instead the administrators continue to place obstacles in the path, move the goalposts & then move the playing fields to new locations. Progress will not be denied, but I fear for the future of women’s cricket in Canterbury unless the stumbling blocks are removed.

JUNIOR SECTION

Sydenham Junior Cricket Club had another very successful year competing in most grades. This included 7 Secondary schools teams, 10 Traditional teams, 9 Junior Mod/Average teams 18 Kiwi/Milo teams and 2 girls teams. Totaling 46 teams Though there was a small reduction in Senior Traditional this was countered by growth in other areas particularly Kiwi, which was up by 4 teams over last year. Secondary schools teams did well with three teams winning their competition and another 2 teams placed 2nd.

Individually the club had approx 40 players selected for Zone representation or Christchurch/Canterbury trials of those 22 went on to represent Christchurch or Canterbury. This is an outstanding achievement

Finance This season the committee decided to increase subs by $5 per player $10 per family to $40 and $60 per family plus players were charged $10 for Polo Shirts. Though the books haven’t been closed for the season yet and despite increased costs and spending it appears that a small profit was made this was done even though the club undertook 2 major projects for the season, which were fully funded by the club without sponsorship. Polo Shirts. As part of the Strategic plan developed last year, we started to outfit players in club Polo Shirts. This year, focusing on Traditional players only, we purchased 269 Polo shirts at a total cost of over $4500. Due to problems with funding, the cost of these was covered by the club using the $10 deposit charged at registration. These Polo Shirts were a big hit with both players and parents giving the players and teams a club identity. We also received a lot of very positive feed back from other clubs and organizations regarding the appearance and behaviour of our players. Web Site This year saw the launch of the clubs Web site with reasonable success. The site proved popular for some though its full potential hasn’t been realized. With some fine-tuning and training for Grade managers this should become a valuable tool for the club. Many thanks to Simon for the hours spent working on it. This was the second major project undertaken this year at a cost of approx $1700. Christchurch South Intermediate A plan to lay an artificial Wicket did not eventuate this season, but funding has become available and this should be completed by the beginning of next season. The Club also continues to support the school in its efforts to develop cricket within the school with the loan of 2 sets of gear for the season. Friday Night Kiwi This year was the biggest yet with 9 teams competing with one team from Hoon Hay giving us 10 teams and 25 Milo players we are also starting to see players from this grade moving through the other grades with some excellent results Junior Traditional 2 day Some disappointment was expressed at the abandonment of the Junior Traditional 2-day competition but this was out of our hands as there were insufficient teams to run the grade despite Sydenham being in a position to provide 2 teams after Christmas. The club though disappointed supports the CJCA in its decision in this case. The Committee This year once again I must take my hat off to the committee. This is where the success stability and direction of the club comes from. To have a committee made up from a base of long term members with a generous helping of newer members gives us a mix of stability and freshness. All have one thing in common - the dedication to Sydenham and junior sport and I sincerely hope for the return of all members for next year. Funding and Expenditure committee The committee recently added this new sub committee to ensure and organize the club’s funding in view of the tougher environment for fund raising. This committee is taking a more hands on roll into funding and is intended to compliment the excellent work of the Trust. This committee is not a stand-alone committee and all decisions have to be ratified by the Sydenham Junior Cricket Club committee. Coaching The coaching program was well run with team visits for most teams and specialist clinics. A very successful holiday program was run again this year plus there was an expansion to the super 8s competition also run over Christmas. This year we saw Nigel Marsh take several preseason courses for first time coaches, which was great and gave a lot of coaches a good start. 4 coaches attained their level ones this year I feel this could have been more but the timing and length of the courses are a major deterrent I would once again call to get these back in house as the CCA seem inflexible in their attitude to them. I was also disappointed that our Coach the coaches was not run this year despite my comments last year this is still a valuable opportunity for coaches to share knowledge and ideas.
