The seventh tournament was hosted here in 1970 with 12 teams competing. 5,601 runs were scored for 522 wickets @ 10.73 runs per wicket. Otago won for the second time through the batting of Ian Rutherford and Bruce Blair with sound support from Ross Murdoch, Mike Johnstone, Garry MacDonald and Damien Forde who also took the most wickets 15 for 63. 14 teams attended for the 18th tournament in 1981 where 7,702 runs for 620 wickets @ 12.42rpw happened. Second-time winners Central Otago scored 644 runs for 48 wickets @ 13.4rpw, as Jodie O’Reilly grabbed 23 wickets @ 5.11rpw. Darrin Murray made 235 runs @ 78.3 for Nelson, Lee Germon, David Ponting, Simon Culhane and Richard Petrie showed depth. Central Otago again won the awards, scoring 888 runs @ 35rpw, taking 54 wickets @ 14.25. The entire yield was 8,449 runs for 483 wickets @ 17.49rpw. This was the 30th tournament in 1993 having the rotational draw now in its tenth trial period. Others in form were Chris Davies, Troy Scanlon, Michael Papps, Tim Parker, Darren Sullivan, Richard Stenhouse and Richard Timpany. At the 42nd tournament in 2005, most of the matches were played on synthetic tracks. Most bowlers took hurried advice as to how to be successful; Christchurch Black won securing 70 wickets @ 7.4rpw after scoring 697 @ 41rpw within the yield of 8,154 runs for 665 wickets @ 12.26rpw. Mitchell Kerr scored 241 @ 60.25rpw while Matthew McEwan claimed 17 wickets for 76 @ 4.47rpw. Others include Jonny Nicholls, Tom Latham, Hamish Teale, Tom Walsh, Ashley Simpson and Cole McConchie. Will Williamson took the only hat-trick in 4/20. Now it’s your turn at the crease. Wishing you plenty of runs in the sun. • Where's the Cricket At? Shafeen Mustaq
Where’s the Cricket at? Shafeen Mustaq Cricket is well past its glory days, let’s admit that straight off the bat. As a young girl I grew up watching and learning from Mark Waugh’s impeccable elegance and timing, Mark 'tubby' Taylor's captaincy, Brian Lara's perfect batting technique and Wasim Akram's flair. As I grew older it seemed cricket was getting weary as well. Football (soccer) fever had converted many fans who preferred the fast pace and excitement as opposed to the staid pace of test matches. Twenty/20s initial years created a furore, but on the whole - several factors led to the decline of the cricket mania I grew up with in the 90s. The first reason had to be the decline in form and eventual retirement of several cricketing greats. The Waugh brothers, Lara, Taylor, Akram and for me Gilchrist was the last straw. The second reason was match- fixing, while a bit of controversy surrounding any game increases its allure and heightens interest, the constant bickering and match fixing allegations took away the passion for the game itself. After all, if the players are not playing for the love of the game, why should the audience love the game? The last and most annoying reason was Australia’s domination of Cricket during Ponting’s captaincy. While initially it was a great feeling of success, the Australian team’s arrogance and domination mixed with rumours of slagging on field and racist slurs led to a gradual disinterest in cricket. Very few cricketers took this as a challenge to their game..

History of Nunawading Cricket Club Nunawading, What’s in a name To get a wider understanding of how the Club started and, in fact, how the BHRDCA started it is worth spending a while discussing the history of the Nunawading and Box Hill districts. There is a strong correlation between the ‘parishes’ of Nunawading, in particular, and Box Hill and the longer serving BHRDCA teams, Nunawading included. Over the next few paragraphs, I will provide a brief history of how Nunawading, formerly Tunstall, came to be and it’s progress from a rural bushland into the busy middle class suburb it has been since the war. The First people of Nunawading When white men first arrived in Victoria, in 1835 the indigenous Aboriginal community was displaced and had to move from traditional grounds, being occupied by Europeans, to displaced locations. When this displacement occurred to the aborigines in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, or perhaps to continue the old, traditional ways, Melbourne’s aborigines, who formed tribes all over the countryside, met in community places and would declare the fundamentals of the unity that existed between them. Following this show of unity more business like matters like common interests and disputes were discussed. One of these meeting places was in Melbourne’s East in a place thought to have been called Numpha-wading by the local aborigines and called Nunawading by the new European settlers, keen to preserve the indigenous names. The popular translation for this word is ‘ceremonial ground’.
