54th SOUTH ISLAND PRIMARY SCHOOLS CRICKET TOURNAMENT TH TH 9 – 13 January 2017 South Canterbury www.southcanterburycricket.co.1 nz WELCOME Once again it is time for the cream of Primary School aged cricketers to don the whites and participate in the 54th South Island tournament. South Canterbury Cricket is delighted to welcome the players, coaches, managers and supporters to this year’s tournament. The South Island Primary School Tournament is a special tournament which over many years has launched the careers of some of New Zealand’s best cricketers. We hope you all enjoy the tournament and all players give their best and have fun. This week is all about the players so I would ask the coaches, managers and supporters to get in behind their teams but also respect, encourage and applaud good play by every player. We are using some of South Canterbury’s best cricket venues which we hope you enjoy. After each day’s play we would like to encourage supporters to come along to the happy hour held in the lounge of the Southern Trust Events Centre at Aorangi Park. This will be a great place to catch up with old friends and keep up with results for the day. There is plenty of parking and places for the children to play outside. See you there. 4 HISTORY WELCOME TO THIS 54TH SOUTH ISLAND TOURNAMENT AT SOUTH CANTERBURY. The seventh tournament was hosted here in 1970 with 12 teams competing. 5,601 runs were scored for 522 wickets @ 10.73 runs per wicket. Otago won for the second time through the batting of Ian Rutherford and Bruce Blair with sound support from Ross Murdoch, Mike Johnstone, Garry MacDonald and Damien Forde who also took the most wickets 15 for 63. 14 teams attended for the 18th tournament in 1981 where 7,702 runs for 620 wickets @ 12.42rpw happened. Second-time winners Central Otago scored 644 runs for 48 wickets @ 13.4rpw, as Jodie O’Reilly grabbed 23 wickets @ 5.11rpw. Darrin Murray made 235 runs @ 78.3 for Nelson, Lee Germon, David Ponting, Simon Culhane and Richard Petrie showed depth. Central Otago again won the awards, scoring 888 runs @ 35rpw, taking 54 wickets @ 14.25. The entire yield was 8,449 runs for 483 wickets @ 17.49rpw. This was the 30th tournament in 1993 having the rotational draw now in its tenth trial period. Most runs (220) was scored by Chris Cunningham (North Otago) while Braiden Bonniface claimed 18 wickets @ 6.4 for Marlborough. Others in form were Chris Davies, Troy Scanlon, Michael Papps, Tim Parker, Darren Sullivan, Richard Stenhouse and Richard Timpany. At the 42nd tournament in 2005, most of the matches were played on synthetic tracks. Most bowlers took hurried advice as to how to be successful; Christchurch Black won securing 70 wickets @ 7.4rpw after scoring 697 @ 41rpw within the yield of 8,154 runs for 665 wickets @ 12.26rpw. Mitchell Kerr scored 241 @ 60.25rpw while Matthew McEwan claimed 17 wickets for 76 @ 4.47rpw. Others include Jonny Nicholls, Tom Latham, Hamish Teale, Tom Walsh, Ashley Simpson and Cole McConchie. The Tournament (a) The tournament shall consist of five rounds of one-day matches. (b) Each team shall comprise of no more than 13 players. The names of team members shall be notified to the Tournament Secretary no later than 10th December prior to the commencement of the tournament. (c) Each team shall represent one of the association areas listed in schedule 1 of these playing conditions. New Zealand Cricket shall adjudicate on any dispute regarding eligibility of players if requested to do so by the associations in dispute. (d) If the number of entries received by the host association on the official date of 1 August is an uneven number, two Christchurch teams of equal ability may be entered where there would otherwise be a bye. 2. Cricket Equipment (a) Equipment: Each team shall provide its own full set of gear including a full set of stumps (County 711 mm) and bails. (b) Dress: Dress: Players shall wear normal cricket attire with either white shorts and long white socks or long white or cream trousers.
