GRADE 8 – 12 Scholars during 2016:

Toni – Grade 8 – Rhenish G irls High School Counsellor report

Toni is attending Rhenish High School and did exceptionally well in her first year at this amazing High School. She is very happy at Rhenish and participates in many extra mural activities such as playing and singing in the school choir. She is dedicated towards her school work and achieved the following results in her final Grade 8 exam: An average of 84.27%, with her highest mark being 95% for Life Orientation. Her lowest mark was 78% for Economic Management Sciences. We are very proud of Toni! Scholar update Good day Sir/Ma’am, I am Toni November and I’m heading to grade 9 at Rhenish Girls’ High School next year. This year has been a hectic yet successful year. I have learnt lots of new things and came across amazing people. Thank you for providing me the opportunity to experience all this. My academic results this year were good and I put in my all to achieve them. I received many code 7’s and did not fail anything. The classwork is challenging but not impossible to do, it just pushes you to try harder. In Natural Sciences, I’ve learnt how humans interpret different colours and unimaginable things about the universe that I haven’t known before. I really loved this subject this year, although it was the toughest. Our tests were definitely not easy and the projects were challenging but extremely fun to do. I enjoy class as the teachers make lessons interesting and do not bore us. Rhenish had their awards ceremony in November in which I achieved an honours certificate following very strict requirements. I also received a “boff” badge for both exam terms this year (academics). I am part of the school choir who took second place in a national choir competition in George, competing against schools from all across South Africa. I love singing in the choir and the George tour was one of the main highlights of this year for me, I got closer to many people I hadn’t known before. The choir also sang with many different schools at various occasions. My netball team participated in lots of matches against schools such as Somerset College, Paarl Gymnasium and Springfield, we won quite a few matches and my teammates and I formed a really close bond over time. For drama as a subject, we had an annual group project to create and perform a play entirely by ourselves based on a poem, this was a fun experience and we exchanged lots of laughs within the class and in our separate groups. My main challenge academically was keeping up my marks. I studied very hard and just did my best. It was quite difficult to wake up 5 o’clock every day and get home at 18:30 most days, excluding homework, but I tried to complete most of it while waiting for the bus in the afternoons, I had to study a lot on weekends in order to have an appropriate bedtime during the school week. Piano practices were also hard to fit into the time schedule as it requires 6 hours a week which is not easy to do concerning studying, homework, bus times and sleeping. I am therefore taking “Engineering Graphics and Design” as my choice subject in 2017. Throughout the year I have learnt to face things as they come and also that I need to get out of my comfort zone sometimes. My mom also motivates me by telling me that if other people can do it then so can I, I learnt to never give up even in the toughest of times. In conclusion I would like to once again say a huge thank you for the help and opportunity I have received. I love it at Rhenish and couldn’t have been there otherwise. 2016 has been a year of many changes but also a good year. My family and I wish you a very blessed festive season!

Josiah – Grade 8 – The Settlers High School Counsellor report

Josiah is a quiet, respectful and focused young man. He loves his new school but it was a big adaptation for him and he quickly realized that he needs to work a lot harder to achieve the same academic results as in Primary school. He achieved the following for the final term in Grade 8, Average of 66%. His highest mark was 76% for , 73% for English and 71% for Geography and Life Orientation respectively.

Scholar update This has been a very exciting and busy year for me. I was especially busy this term because of all the events and activities in and out of school. These are the highlights of term 3 and 4.

At the end of term 3, everyone got their reports and I was excited and nervous. There were highs and lows, but I did well. I managed to improve my Math results by 26% since term 1. Other results also improved. I am aiming for even higher results this term, hoping to improve my Science marks the most. I have that opportunity with the final exams. We write over a course of nearly 3 weeks, with breaks in between. We also have practical assessments for Dance and Drama. I hope to obtain good results for both practicals and all my written papers for my other subjects.

Every year our school has a social for the Grade 8's, which gives you the opportunity to take a break from schoolwork and just enjoy a night at school with your friends. There were DJ's and snacks and drinks for us and we had a big party. It was the one night that we were allowed to enjoy ourselves at school.

I went on my first school outing at The Settlers High School this year. It was a 2-day excursion. On the first day, we went on a walking tour of the CBD. The school provided us with lunch at Eastern Bazaar. On the second day we took a boat trip to Seal Island. When we got back, we ate lunch at Fish On the Rocks. It was an exciting time for all the Grade 8's.

In this last term I started to help out at Sunday-school. For now I am just assisting, but hope to be a teacher and leader in the future.

Overall, this year has been a challenging, yet exciting and interesting year. Grade 8 has treated me well, and look forward to the next chapter in my high school journey.

In closing, I would just like to say a big THANK YOU to KMF and to you. All of this would not have been possible without you. THANK YOU. Josiah is fully funded.

Kirshni – Grade 8 – Cedar House Counsellor report Kirshni has developed into a beautiful young lady of which we are very proud. She absolutely adores the school she attends and is blossoming under their teaching methodology.

Kirshni achieved the following symbols. an A for English, Afrikaans AA, Maths A+, Life Orientation B+, Dramatic Arts B+, Geography Alive A and for Zoology an A.

Scholar update Throughout my first year at high school, performing academically well proved quite challenging. However through hard work and dedication, I managed to obtain exceptional results. My favorite subject for this semester was Physics as I found the module extremely interesting and thus excelled in this subject. I also enjoyed English as the module on Gothic Horror was intriguing and capturing. We also explored various elements of drama which allowed me to express myself as well as gain confidence through performance and poetry. My goals next semester would be to be more confident and continue to uphold high standards.

This semester I received a certificate at our school's annual awards ceremony for excelling in more than 5 subjects; I also achieved the highest mark in my senior stage physics class for our final assessment. In the third term our Physics class was taken on a tour through the Ballistics Department in Plattekloof. On the tour we were able to experience the testing of a real firearm. While supervised we were also allowed to hold an unloaded gun as well as touch the ammunition. I bravely held a revolver as well as an AK47 assault rifle. We were unfortunately unable to take pictures as all the guns were evidence used in real life cases. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this excursion.

We also visited the farm where we learnt how to start and sustain our own gardens, make our own compost as well as cook delicious meals using organic materials. At Cedar House we celebrate a tradition called food day. Food day is held to celebrate the great cultural diversity that Cedar house prides itself in. This year, restaurants and food trucks from all over visited our school. We were exposed and encouraged to embrace the diverse cultures in both food and games.

Another highlight for this semester was that I was able to participate in our super group's social action which required us to prepare and serve food to the homeless at the Haven Night Shelter in Wynberg. Doing this allowed me to engage and build real relationships with the inhabitants. I take pride in the fact that I had the opportunity to make even the tiniest difference in someone's life as this scholarship has made a huge difference in my life. One of the challenges that I faced this semester was overcoming personal troubles in order to stay focused on my academics. I also struggled to engage in quite a lot of social activities as I was still extremely shy and reserved. After settling in and finding my feet I developed both socially and academically and became more interactive in class discussions and took every opportunity to engage in all social activities possible.

Outside of school I enjoy singing in our church choir as well as participating in spiritual dancing and several other church related activities. At the moment we are busy with a Christmas drama and dance production; depicting how modern families celebrate Christmas and challenges they face as a community. I enjoy taking on new characters that allow me to grow and challenge myself to perform outside of my comfort zone.

This scholarship has given me the opportunity to rise above my circumstances and strive to new heights. It has given me a chance to be the author of my own story, by not allowing my financially underprivileged background to determine my future. This scholarship has given me much more than financial assistance, it has enabled me to achieve things that I could only have dreamt possible. It has allowed me to grow and develop both academically as well as emotionally. It has given me hope for a better future. I truly believe that with this scholarship I can achieve whatever I put my mind to. I would like to thank each and every person and organization that played a part in giving me this opportunity. I am eternally grateful for this tremendous blessing that I have been graced with. Kirshni is fully funded

Fagan – Grade 8 – The Settlers High School Counsellor report Fagan as well as his mother crept into our hearts from the first time we met them. Although he is quite a joker, he also has a serious and competitive side. Fagan joined us at our Gala event and elected to tell his story to the attendees. Although a bit nervous, he spoke from his heart and captivated the attendees.

Fagan achieved an average of 79.2% for term 4 in Grade 8. His highest mark was 93% for Mathematics and his lowest mark was 60% for Afrikaans. All his other subjects were between 78 and 84%. Scholar update Wow what a fantastic year this has been ! Looking over this year it felt like it went so quick, that it felt like a blink of an eye and I would love to share these experiences of the beginning of my High School life. There are so many things that I would like to share with you, but if I do it might expand over 10 pages and I don't have enough typing abilities and don't want to waste any of your time.

The first thing I would like to share is my first experience of The Settlers High School inter- house swimming gala and athletics. Our first days at school were spent on cheering and swimming preparation. I was a participant in this Gala and received the following positions; 5th in backstroke and my relay team came first overall (15 January 2016). We were expected to be early at school to enjoy our inter-house athletics and of course having not a single athletic bone in my body I was not a participant. So now I was forced to cheer, but I still enjoyed it.

Our first Saturday was spent at school for the grade 8's fun day and learned to get to know each other. We had different activities that tested strength, wisdom and teamwork. I tasted my first experience of a Settlers production, which was the one Act plays and that is where I received inspiration to do that one day. I also had the opportunity to watch the musical “My Fair Lady” (Arts cape Theatre) and the Smart Living Drama Festival (Baxter Theatre) with my school.

Now we will be taking a trip on my sport and academic journey. My school had its annual Fairbairn derby where our winter sports participated. I participated in Table Tennis where I won all my single matches and double matches. At the Fairmount Contact it was an exact repeat of Fairbairn where I won all my matches in Table Tennis. But this sporting year wasn’t only one of winning but also losses, so I would like to share this. My 2016 year was only filled with 2 wins, 1 team forfeited and too many losses to count.

So now academics, these are my results for each term and my average for that term: 1st Term 9th in grade (72%), 2nd Term 5th in grade (78%), 3rd Term 11th in grade (78%) and 4th Term 4th in grade (79%). My average between the exam in June and the one in November was 78.8%, this won me a merit in academics which means I get a tie and a scroll on my blazer. I have the highest in Math (93%), Technology (81%), Natural Science (78%) and IsiXhosa as an extra subject, I received 85%. Thanks to my parents who motivated me even when I was too tired to study.

Pastorally and culture: I am part of a society called The Arise Society, which is a Christian based group. Pastorally I have spoken in two assemblies where the topics were: Disappointments and how to deal with them. I also spoke about my life at Kay Mason's Gala evening. I also played the lead role in the Christmas production, called The Littlest Angel. And now as we have viewed over all these events and occurrences I have come to one conclusion and only one. That without you as donors and the staff at Kay Mason, these wonderful things would never had happened. I say out of my utmost being, thank you and I want to make you so proud that you will say I have invested in that boy's life and now I'm proud of the man he has become. Have a blessed Christmas and a joyous Festive season.

Scholar update I feel that my first year of high school has been most memorable. I remember my first day at high school. I was just dying to experience the new and exciting things that awaited me. Now that I have done all those things and many more, I am about to embark on a new adventure that will take me to many more experiences. Some say that high school was the best time of their lives during the first year, just like others say that the first year of high school was the worst time of their lives. To be honest, I am not sure which category I fall into. I had plenty of good times as well as many bad times. The only thing that I can say is that I learned about life and the road ahead of me.

I have experienced a lot of time sacrificing, brain dying activities, and yet I made it through the first year. High school is way different from primary school. Many things have changed. I tried to be more accustomed to the adaption of things and near the end of the year I did adapt. In my first year I also experienced loneliness, rejection and being made fun of. But I don’t mind, I don’t care what they say. These children who treated me like this became my friends.

High school has taught me many things, both academically and emotionally. It has revealed and exposed my true colours, both good and bad and as a result, has built many aspects of my character. My first year in high school has made me learn from my mistakes, learn how to strive harder for my studies. Taught me not to become a coward at difficult times instead to be brave enough to reach the peak.

I just want to say thank you for my donors and to KMF for seeing the potential in me and for giving me this scholarship. Without you I would not have come so far and I just want to say I love you and appreciate you. You are a big blessing in my life and you will always be my hero. THANK YOU Sidney is fully funded.

Firdous – Grade 8 – Fairbairn Coll ege Counsellor report

Firdous is a quiet and respectful young lady who works hard to excel in life. She achieved 77.3% average for the final term. Her highest mark was 83% for Mathematics and 81% for Afrikaans. All her other subjects ranges between 74% and 79%. We are extremely proud of her and know that she can maintain these results. Firdous also attended the KMF Gala event and with more exposure we know that her confidence levels will increase.

Scholar update I honestly can’t believe that it’s the end the year already, meaning it’s a lso my last month in grade 8, at Fairbairn College. My name is Firdous Mokadam, age 14. I was born in the spring season, October. As stated in my previous donor report, I am raised by a single mother, which would give the world to me, but only if she could. Well Anita Cloete is a mother which supports and strengthens her only daughter. As any household, we have our ups and downs in life, but that doesn’t stop us from caring and supporting one another.

Fairbairn College is the high school that I currently attend. With all the wonderful friends I’ve met there, it’s been going well. Fairbairn is a school that is strong in their academics and sports. They teach us good lessons and they try their very best to make us happy and most importantly, help us succeed in our education. Classes have been going well and it’s not only educational but also enjoyable too. The exams this term and last term has been rough ... I overcame that fear and now it’s time to only hope for the best. I studied very hard and tried my very best too, but somehow every term I feel like I could have done better. Tests have been difficult but also easy. Some became hectic. We haven’t received many projects this past two terms due to the lack of time. I did well with the ones I received and I am really proud of myself. My goals this term are short and simple. This term I would like to pass (which I’m fully confident in doing), I want to be in the top twenty and to say least improve in most of my subjects for next year. I haven’t received any achievements so far, besides improving in some of my subjects. I can’t really say anything about my achievements for my academics this term, since we haven’t received our academic reports yet. And this I will add on to my goals, to receive much more achievements next year.

There wasn’t any highlights in my life this past few two terms in school, besides earning a great amount of friends. I went from a shy girl this year to a more confident person. Challenges heal us and makes us better people, although this year has been one of the most toughest so far, I still survived, and I guess I should be grateful for that. This year I learnt many lessons which I know I won’t repeat. My challenges gave me the courage to go on. To move forward without looking back. It helped me overcome my difficulties. And most importantly, it made me wiser. Challenges are more likely to pull us down, but it’s our choice to keep trying, to keep pushing. Challenges make us weak, but it’s up to us not to let it bring us down. It makes us smarter and we learn from it too. Academically challenges were everywhere. The last two terms have been really challenging. The work became more and more and more every term, making it more and more difficult to study, but what really helped me, was the tutoring from Kay Mason Foundation.

Socially, the year has been good so far and with no challenges, I hope it stays like that. Personally this year has been very tough. With many financial problems in our household things weren’t going well, but successfully we managed to overcome part of them. With the support from Kay mason foundation too. Kay Mason Foundation is an inspiration in my life. They teach us so many morals and values. I mean, I’m honestly grateful to have met an awesome organisation like them and I’m also proud to be a part of them too. They help so many children achieve. They don’t choose these children out of pity because of their circumstances but of how talented they are. This organisation helps us find a future that we desire. They motivate us. They make us stronger. They open up those golden gates and lead us into bright futures. Kay Mason Foundation is a unique organisation. They involve us in wonderful events such as the gala evening, which was extremely fun. They communicate with us, and even set up amazing programs, just for us to learn new things and to get to know the outside world better. These are things that not all scholarships would do for their scholars. Kay Mason Foundation is like my second home, where I know that I’m safe, loved and most importantly, well cared for. Ferdous is fully funded.

Jordan – Grade 8 – Fairbairn College Counsellor report Jordan is a respectful young man and has a very special bond with his mother. He also has a lot of energy and strong leadership skills. He works hard to achieve success and we are proud of what he achieved this year.

Jordan achieved an average of 77.5% for the final term, Grade 8. He achieved 89% for EMS, 87% for Maths and 85% for History. His lowest mark was 69% for Technology and Creative Arts respectively. Scholar update Dear Donor

My name is Jordan Rajh. I am currently in grade 8 at Fairbairn College. School is still very exciting with all the challenges. Final examinations are finally over and now I can relax. No more stress, just the anticipation of waiting on my report. I hope I did well. I believe I will because I worked hard. I can’t believe the year is coming to an end. It still feels like yesterday that I attended Fairbairn College for the first time. I knew nobody and now I made some amazing friends. The school really feels like a second home. I know that I have made the right choice. I have teachers that go the extra mile to assist where needed.

My class won the junior prize for bringing in the most money for the fundraiser so now we will be going paint balling. I am looking forward to it seeing that it will be the last I get to spend time with my friend before the school close. Now that the year is coming to an end, I can truly say that I have matured and grown into a young man. I have so much to be grateful and thankful for. I have to continue giving my best to achieve the best.

The KMF team are an amazing team. I am proud to be part of it. This is truly a foundation that loves and takes care of their scholars. Their guidance, support and discipline have contributed to the young adolescent I have grown into.

Finally to you, donor, I would like to personally thank you for your help towards the Kay Mason Foundation. You help others like me get the opportunity to a better education. All I can say is thank you so much. Enjoy the festive season and New Year.

Thank you & kind regards, Jordan Rajh

Bilqees – Grade 8 – South Peninsula High School Counsellor report Bilqees has gone through a trying time a little while ago. The area that she stays in is riddled with gangsters. During one of their shoot-outs her father was hit by stray bullets. He is still recovering, but this has put tremendous stress on Bilqees and her mother.

Despite her circumstances, she achieved the following: 3rd Position in her class, with an average of 72.8%. Her highest marks were 86% for History and 82% for Afrikaans. Her lowest mark was 59% for Creative arts. Scholar update Dear Donor

I greet you in the name of the Almighty and pray that he keeps blessing you and your family the same way he is blessing me.

The past two terms was quite nice for me because in the beginning I was still finding my feet. In the third term my aggregate went up, but that was not the only thing that went up. The competition is getting tougher. My mathematics was not so well so I went for tutoring at Kmf with Sifiso, my tutor, who made it much easier. What a brilliant tutor - he always finds a way to make me understand and I thank him for his patience. I always strive to do my best, like my Sir always tells me "I am focused and hardworking".

For the past three terms I reached the top ten position in my class and the third term I came ninth. I'm so proud of myself because my aggregate went up. My class teacher said there is a chance that if I work hard I can go to the clever class in grade 9. I’m super excited because I love competition.

I got hundred percent for history in the third term. I felt honoured and proud of myself that my hard work was noticed. The arts department at my school held their annual open week where all the students showcased their talents, and I was participating in music and drama acts. I attended Kmf annual Gala event in September, what an amazing event it was. I felt like I was in a movie thanks to the Kmf crew.

The area I live in is not safe to be outside. The gangsters are shooting every day. One morning my father came from work after night shift and got shot in a cross fire. He was hospitalised for two weeks and went for an operation. Thank God the operation was successful. I rather stay indoors and occupy myself with my school work and help my mother with household chores. Some weekends my friend’s mother comes to pick me up and we have study sessions.

The scholarship means the world to me. I don’t know where I would be without it. I would like to thank the KMF crew and my donor for believing in me and who is always there for me physically, emotionally and financially. You guys are my family, thanks a lot. I pray that the Almighty guide and protect you always, grant you the best of health, wealth and happiness. Have a blessed holiday.

Yours Sincerely Bilqees Holman Bilqees is fully funded.

Nikita – Grade 8 – Gard ens Commercial High School Counsellor report Nikita is unhappy with her current school and requested to be transferred to Milnerton High as from 2017. During the year she also raised concerns as to her Mathematics marks and the frequent change in Math teachers. Nikita is a hard worker and wants to achieve her full potential. We are certain that she will be very happy at Milnerton High in 2017.

Nikita achieved an average of 72.8% for the 4 th term in Grade 8. Her highest mark was 83% for English and her lowest was 65% for History. Scholar update Dear donor This year has been filled with so many positive experiences and it is all thanks to you.

To me, my first year in high school has been an incredible journey filled with hard work, perseverance, as well as fun. I have met new people and I have had a chance to experience a whole new world of knowledge. The teachers at my school have helped me to earn each and every percentage on my report card. I have done my best throughout the year and I know that it will all be worth it.

This would not be possible without you or the staff of Kay Mason. You are all inspirational people who make me want to strive to be the best person I can possibly be.

The Kay Mason team has put in so much effort to make our year so much fun and it has been a great learning experience. I have especially enjoyed the fundraising event because we got to meet most of the donors and listen to the stories they had to tell.

I just want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to wear my school uniform with pride.

Zahir – Grade 8 – Cedar House Counsellor report Zahir received positive comments from his mentor and teachers on his final term report from Cedar House. The teachers all thoroughly enjoyed teaching him and commended him for his efforts.

Zahir achieved the following symbols for the 4 th Term: English A (from C+), Afrikaans B+, Mathematics A (from B), Business Studies B, Computer Applications Technology A+ and Humanities B+.

We are pleased with Zahir’s results as he put in extra effort during the final term.

Scholar update The last six months has been really fun for me here at Cedar H ouse. Since I did my science module in my last semester (first six months of school) I did not have to do it again and the same goes for Life Orientation. This made me really happy because now I had six tuts instead of only having three tuts. Tuts are our free periods at Cedar House. It’s really cool because we can use these tuts to finish work or to revise our work if we have a test later or if you don’t have work you can simply just relax with your friends.

For this semester the subject's that I chose was English, Maths, Afrikaans, Business Studies, CAT (Computer Application Technology) and History. All of these subjects were fun but yet all of them required hard work. For me this semester Afrikaans was actually the easiest subject for me and CAT was the hardest. English was fun with my new teacher and this semester we did two books for literature and they are Of Mice and Men and the second book is called Wonder. Both of them are really good books abut for me I enjoyed Wonder more. What was really surprising for me was with Wonder the author actually divided the book into different sections where some of the characters would tell the same story but from their point of view and this helped us understand the book a lot easier.

So that’s what is happening with my school work so far. I’m still playing soccer for the school and I’m still doing karate outside of school. I now graded from a blue belt to a purple belt and if everything goes well by this time next year I’ll be moving on to junior brown belt. I’m really excited about that. I just need to train hard for another 2-3 years and then I can tick my goal of becoming a black belt off the list. Something that I’m really looking forward to is also the holidays, because I hear that we are starting really early next year so I am going to try and make the most out of this holiday. I’m maybe going to sleep over at my cousin’s so that we can go out and I also want to visit my old friends from primary school because it’s been a long time since I’ve spoken or seen them. I think it’s because we’ve all been so busy with exams and school that we’ve hardly seen each other.

Ok so back to school, I got my report a lot earlier than other schools did and not sure why though, but it was a pretty good report. Almost all my marks went up and none of my marks went down. So for me it’s been a really good semester. My English marks went from a C+ to an A, my Afrikaans marks stayed a B+, my Mathematics marks went from a B to an A, then for Business Studies I got a B, for CAT I got an A+ and for History I got a B+. When I saw my marks I almost fainted because I could not believe that I did this well. Earlier I said that my hardest subject was CAT and yet my highest mark for my whole report was for CAT. For this subject just one of the assessments that we had to do was a mini Mario game which consisted of two levels. We had to create everything for the game from designing the different costumes to designing the different levels and then we even had develop and create code for him so that when you press a certain button the Mario character would move left or jump up. That was a complete nightmare, but yet I got through it and excelled. Once again I cannot thank you enough for everything that you have done for me because none of this would have been possible if it wasn't for you. For everyone high school is a new chapter in their life and here the first year of my new chapter went so fast. I mean it took me a while to realise that the year is over and that I’m not in grade 8 anymore, but I have moved on to grade 9. So once again I just want to say thank you and I can’t wait to write again next year.

Kindest Regards, Zahir

Scholar update Dear donor

Hope you've had a wonderful year, this year for me was quite different to others but I got to know what's happening around school and I got used to this new feeling and how work was done. This first year of high school taught me to be independent and only depend on myself, therefor I should not wait for something to be done for me instead I should do it myself.

Third term was quite nice, in most of my subject I improved, which was good. We did a lot of projects and practical things. The 3 rd term was filled with excitement and hard working in class. 4 th Term was a difficult term as it is the exam term, but I worked really hard in classes and I studied really well. I am sure my report will show my hard work. This term we had quite a short time to be taught by the teacher because it is the exam term. But thanks to our teachers they taught us everything we needed to know for the exam and I really appreciate the teachers for their hard work.

3rd Term I was nominated as class captain by the class. This was not an easy job especially for me because I did not have much leading skills, but being class captain made me learn these skill. This also taught me, it's not just about giving orders or instruction but by also setting an example to the class by acting the way you want your class to act. By doing the things you want your class to do so your class is not against you but are following a good leader and doing what they are supposed to do. 3rd and 4 th Term I was the 2 nd highest achiever in mathematics in our class. This was an amazing achievement for me as some people really struggle in maths. I really like it a lot, and to be the 2 nd highest achiever in maths made me really proud and my family is also really proud.

I love spending time with family and friends and I also love camping. The last camp I went on was last weekend. It was a youth camp and it was all about getting closer to God. I really enjoyed it, learnt a lot and had a lot of fun. The camp was held in Franschoek and it was our youth and other youth groups. We got to meet new people, and made new friends. The main topic on the camp was about relationship with God, friends, family, so this really taught me a lot.

I am really thankful to KMF. They get to really know us and teach us new things at workshops. They have these workshops and events, which brings us closer and they get to know us really well individually. KMF has the best staff, Sifiso, Noeline, Chrismaine and Lindie. I am very thankful to them, they are the best. They are good at what they do and treat us with love and care.

Cyra achieved an average of 74.7% for the final term in Grade 8. She achieved 84% for Afrikaans and Geography, 80% for History, 77% for Natural Science and English. Her lowest mark was 61% for EMS and Creative Arts. Scholar update Dear donor; I hope everything is going well with you and the family.

I just wanted to thank YOU and the KMF for the opportunity that you gave me as a KMF student. It is almost the end of my first high school year and have just finished my end of year exams. I am still anxiously awaiting my results and hope to get good results.

My highlights for 2017 was: Taking part in karate competition where I received two silver medals. I also got my third stripe on my orange belt. Another highlight was to attend a book launch that was made possible by the KMF. For me this was something new and very interesting.

My plans for next year is to do my best in my school work and will be working very hard. I am very interested in music and in playing the keyboard. I did apply to exchange Visual art for Music as a subject next year. I think me playing an instrument would sound a lot better than most of how my drawings look.

For my holidays I plan to visit some family and friends. I also might do some voluntary work when I get back from my trip.

I hope that you will have an enjoyable festive season.

Kind regards

Scholar update Dear Donor / Greg Johnson

To be completely honest I have to say that I am quite satisfied with my academic results after Term two. While writing this report I looked through my past reports of this year and I came to see that my marks have been rising and dropping in that specific sequence. My marks were high and then low, but my primary school teacher told me that it was completely normal and it happens quite often to new high school children. The results that I received in Term three was more satisfying than those of the previous terms. I am happy to say that most of my marks went up from term two to term three so I am particularly glad about that. I am really getting used to the English work and everything being completely different from last year. Academically I should say that I am not that clever as I used to be if that was what I was last year. I feel that there is a gap between my primary school marks and my high school marks. I was used to getting ninety percent and eighty percent in most of the subjects that I enjoyed, but now I only get nineties and eighties for Afrikaans and EMS. This isn't bad as a lot of our kids at school don't get high marks but I am in the D class so most of my classmates receive an aggregate of 60-95 for these two subjects as well as in Mathematics. We are in the mathematics class so it’s expected of us to be good at maths. I improved in maths between term 2 and 3 and my maths teacher told me that she is proud of me, but knows as well as I do that I can achieve higher marks if I put in much time and effort. I try not to compare myself to the top academic achievers in my class, but I do and it motivates me to want to do better and it also boosts my competitiveness which is something I learned at my new school or at least high school - to compete. Something I never liked, but here I am doing it. I don't get fed up with myself for not beating everyone else I just want to improve that's all. Even though the results improved I still think and have faith in myself and think I can get more and better marks in future. I will try and work harder at more of my subjects that I struggle with and improve to be at the top level of academics.

In previous terms I didn't receive a lot of awards, but I managed to receive more in terms 3 and 4. Well I have to say that I was proud of myself for an improvement in most of my subjects. As I've mentioned in my previous report, I received the Honors badge. Well in the past two terms I was invited to our school's prize giving and I received the Endeavour award. This award is awarded to a learner in class that has been agreed by all of the subject teachers that teach you and everyone needs to agree, otherwise you don't get the award. I was a bit disappointed that I didn't receive another award, but I was thankful and grateful for even receiving an award. I was second in class for History which I was worried about in term 1 and 2 because my marks were so low. I was very relieved and surprised because I really tried my best and put in so much effort into improving. Well I achieved the highest marks for Economic, Management Science (EMS) in term 3. I also did quite well in Afrikaans, I wasn't first in the grade, but I was in the Top 10 in all of the terms and the same went for EMS. I was also either 1st or 2nd in class for Afrikaans. I am quite proud of myself and have strong confidence that I will improve more and work to the best of my abilities. I also hope that in future my section on Achievements will be much longer than this that I received in grade 8.

In my previous report I mentioned that I've been struggling to speak as well as the other learners in my class because they are English home language students and I'm not, so that for me now isn't that much of a problem anymore. I try very hard to pronounce most of the words correctly. Just because I said it's not that much of a problem to me doesn't mean that I am still corrected. Till this very day I am continuously reminded and corrected if I tend to pronounce something wrong or when my sentence structures aren't that great. I actually improved by taking advice from language teachers because they told me that it's going to be a challenge for me as I am originally an Afrikaans student. What they advised me to do was to read a lot more and watch more English movies and series. Reading was no problem for me because it simply is one of the things that I enjoy more than going out and having fun. Another challenge for me was that the work was done in English and I only had experience in Saturday school and on some occasions when I translated work in class. I have to say that I have overcome that challenge, but not completely though. I think I've adapted so much to the English language in less than a year because I really pushed myself as I felt that I was really capable and also because I had a lot of support too. I've learnt to overcome many of my challenges on my own as I am very self-reliant. A challenge for me still is that I still don't like asking people for much and I will have to take time to improve that. Working with the people in my class are not that much of a challenge because most of them know what they want and how they want it. I say that I have overcome most of my challenges through adaptation and I have learned a lot in this course of time.

My life outside of school still hasn't been the most exciting and adventurous as it should be, but I have to say that I have been quite a busy person throughout the terms and should I say that high school is just not a time to play and be lazy, but rather being constant and hard working. Because at the end of the day it really does pay off. There is no time at all to be slacking down but rather working at your best of your abilities. I know I'm only in grade 8 and it's only my first year in high school, but I really am aware of the work needed to be put in for the best results. I usually do homework and if it's not a busy week at school I will relax and read or socialize with my friends because I barely see any of them as I am the only one out of my friends that went to Milnerton. To be honest, I've adapted to English so much that I barely speak Afrikaans like I used to. I have now learnt to stay inside the house and stay away from all sorts of distractions especially during test periods during the terms. I focus a lot more now that I am in a different school and away from distractions. I don't exactly know if I've mentioned that I used to do ballroom dancing in primary school. I decided to leave ballroom because my school times didn't match those of my ballroom lessons. I only got to watch the other students that I used to dance with. Recently my instructor opened more dancing lessons at a different venue with different times. He asked me to come back to dancing classes and join the best of his dancers from the bigger groups and I agreed to dance again so I will start next year because I still need a partner. I don't do much else other than stay inside my house since I've entered high school.

The reason for writing this report once again would not have been possible without the support from the scholarship. I am and will always be grateful for the Kay Mason Foundation and Mr Greg Johnson. Without your support financially, emotionally and academically my high school career was not even possible. I would never have imagined or pictured myself being the only one out of my friends and neighborhood to be in a different school where I learn more than what others around me do. Getting a good education, as I see a lot of kids I used to be friends with failing and getting mixed up with the wrong crowd and being influenced in a negative way. Every day I think of how fortunate I am. Receiving an education is a right but also a privilege. I am not just receiving an education I am receiving one of the educations that I would never had known of if it wasn't for this scholarship and I am forever grateful for this scholarship. Thank you so much. Charney is fully funded.

Unam – Grade 8 – Good Hope Seminary Girls High School Counsellor report Unam is slowly but surely adapting to High School although she is not finding it easy. This year she also struggled to sort out her transport to school and arrived late for school many mornings. This has been addressed and taking the bus to school seems to have solved her problems. Unam does not have a lot of support at home as she is being raised by her elderly grandmother. As such Unam has to manage her daily challenges by herself. Our aim is to let Unam join our KMF female support group or our mentor group to provide her with extra support and motivation. We are proud of how Unam is developing and know that if she puts more effort into planning and being organized, that she will achieve a lot more.

Unam achieved an average of 62.4% for the 4th term. Her highest mark was 71% for Geography and 70% for History. Her Mathematics dropped considerably with reason for concern. She achieved 48% for Mathematics. This will be addressed in 2017 via additional tutoring classes. Scholar update Hi my name is Unam Nkanyuza. I am in grade 8 and soon to be 14 years old in 16 days.

I am not impressed with my results and my goal is to get 80% in Maths, English, Afrikaans and History. My classes are pretty acceptable and interesting. They are a bit challenging once you get to all areas of work. I have learned a lot from this year in my grade 8 classes. We get group projects which are pretty challenging because in life there will be that one person in a team who will do less work, but I encourage myself to do what is expected of me. We also get to dance, sing and play instruments which is kind of fun and causes adrenaline because you are expected to do it in front of the whole class. I am proud of the class that I am in because they are here for you during tough times and are able to help with work when you don't understand.

Well this year I entered in a choir in which we had to sing in competitions and we actually won against a choir club called Imvumiso. I was so happy with the fact that we had to wake up early and come home late knowing that all the hard work has paid off. I also entered a spelling bee at school, got to the semi-finals, but unfortunately did not qualify to the finals. I was disappointed, but it taught me a lot in that we don't always qualify for everything in life.

Well, I got to do a lot this past six months. I got involved in a school event and you had to enter the scary basement. It was so scary that a lot of the girls were traumatised! It was fun. We also participated in table tennis in my area against a group of boys against girls, and we won! I was so happy that I had this opportunity. We won 15-5, which was quite a challenge.

My challenges are people looking down at you and who are not thankful for the effort you put in. My maths has been a challenge due to the tutor which doesn't clearly explain, not that it is my excuse for my bad results. People bring others down to bring out the good in them and I've experienced that a lot this year. I have been treated as if I am owned and I have overcome that by being strong and encourage myself. Sometimes I would cry myself to sleep asking myself why I am being treated like this. People always see the happier me, but have no idea what I am going through, the pressure and the insults towards me but a prayer before sleeping has helped me to keep calm.

Well I am not an outdoor person, but I improved that by going to my favourite neighbour - by helping her because she is old and has a knee problem. She is very kind and is a peoples-person. I help her by cleaning her house and watering her garden. I also go and play soccer at Ikhusi Primary school with my cousin’s sister. I love the sea so I make sure that I go there at least once in 6 months because we cannot afford it. I love to talk to my ancestors which is a part of a Xhosa tradition by connecting with them. I like to eat, especially when I am nervous which is a habit of mine. I like to sit at the back of the house where it is peaceful with muffins & fruit and eat, cry and look through my family album. Since Mother died I would every year, at the day of her death, go to the back of the house and cry and sing to honour her although I cannot sing. I am weird like everyone else, but in my own way.

Kay Mason is my medicine, my life. I depend on Kay Mason because they are heaven sent. They may be harsh at times, but it shows how much they care and I am proud of the progress. They are my family since my dad has failed to provide for me and my sister. Kay Mason has amazing people like Chrismaine, Lindy & Noeline. Those 3 women are my power women but my honour is to Mr Richard Mason. He is the kindest man and he is brave. He is my hero. Kay Mason is my second home. They taught me about life and its challenges and I am happy to tell everyone I know about Kay Mason. Thank you

Scholar update Dear Donor / Richard Mason Hope you are well and happy for the break as I am. 2016 Grade 8 has come to the end. I have to say this year was more difficult than I have ever expected it to be, but with that difficulty came love, understanding and patience.

I did well, but I will always say that I can do better. Then I think that I cannot compare last year results with this year’s. I don’t want to put blame on anything nor anyone but myself, I just don’t know how to work with the high school life yet because I see everyone doing better and I end up second guessing myself. I think that is the main problem “comparing” so I want to set my goals for next year. First goal will be to not compare myself to anyone, but to aim high and work harder because I am not only doing all this for myself and my future but also to make my mother and you proud. I truly want next year to be the year that I come back with a bang. The end of the year’s examinations was a big shock, to be honest, how the papers were set up was something new, but I truly enjoyed the experience because it was my first step into the examination life at Settlers High School. Next year I will be ready for all the obstacles since I will be knowing the hints or let me call it the high jumps.

At school we already practicing for our sports and cheering that we normally do as the whole. Which is the one that brings us all together as one. Being sporty is not my greatest thing, but I am trying as always because it doesn’t hurt to try. Then life itself, it was an amazing year. Drama has become my new love, I am trying to get better at it and with the help of my drama teacher I know I will go places. She is not only my drama teacher, but my school mother. She is even planning to sign my twin and I in an acting competition. I am nervous because it would be the first time doing something like this. So during the holidays I will be practicing my acting and hopefully all will go well. That is the great part of my life, but then I come to my bad part. On 17 th November my great-grandmother past away and her departure was caused by breast cancer, it was the worst thing that ever happened to me this year as she was a big part of our lives and she was buried on 26 th November. When I heard about the death of my gogo I felt the pain as my mother told us in the morning before going to school and I couldn’t stay home since we were already busy with exams at school. It is not easy, but I will have to make peace as I believe that she is in a better place and no longer in pain.

We have come to the end of this year finally and now we can all at least have a short break with our friends, but most importantly with our family as we will have another year that will not be easy, but harder than this year. Happy Festive season and please stay safe with your family and friends. May the dear Lord be with you and keep you safe during this festive season. Thank you so much for all you are doing for me and the opportunities you have given me and taking the weight off my mother’s shoulders. You are not only helping my mother, but also helping me build my bright future to be able to help other kids in any way I can. Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year to you and your family. BE SAFE and THANK YOU SO MUCH. Sisanda Madwayi Sisanda is fully funded.

Asanda Madwayi – Grade 8 – The Settlers High School Counsellor report

Asanda is the identical twin sister of Sisanda Madwayi and the two of them are inseparable. So much so that Asanda also attended the Junior program with her sister with the knowledge that she will not form part of our selection process. She also attended tutoring during Sisanda’s Grade 8 year as well as all the other KMF programmes. They stay with their single mother as their father passed away when they were still toddlers. Due to Asanda’s diligence, hard work and positive attitude we have decided to also provide her with a KMF scholarship from 2017 onwards. We are very happy to formally accept her into the KMF programme.

Scholar update Asanda will do her first scholar update report in 2017. Asanda is fully funded.

Thimna – Grade 8 – Plumstead High School Counsellor report Thimna is a lovely young lady who is very respectful towards other scholars and adults. She attended one of our functions during September 2016 adjusted well to High School and gets along with all her peers. It is a pleasure to work with Thimna.

Thimna achieved an average of 62% for the final term in Grade 8. Her highest mark was 76% for Natural Science and Maths respectively.

Scholar update Good day Toni and Jane I am writing this donor report to tell you more about my life and thank you for being part of it. This has been a working term, each and every class we went to the teacher would remind us that this is the last term so we have to work hard. We did not get a lot of projects this term due to exams we just had to revise term 1-3 work.

There was a very interesting drama play we had to do for Creative Arts. We had to create an advert of two minutes that includes music and singing. We were in groups of 5. The product that my group advertised was fruits. Each one of us had to choose a fruit so I chose a banana. I don't like bananas, but when you pronounce the word it flows - unlike strawberry that is long to pronounce. It had to go like “R3 banana” then the rest will follow and say the price of the fruit as well as the name of the fruit.

For English we were in pairs and had to discuss any topic with a partner as if it was just the two of us in a room having a conversation. My partner and I were speaking about the Fees Must Fall strike that took place at universities. We basically said that the strike is delaying student’s exams as well as the graduation of those who are doing their last year. Grade 8 was a wonderful year and I am looking forward for Grade 9.

I did a counselling workshop that took place at church and I graduated on the 3rd of December in basic counselling. I am looking forward to meeting you again and Thank You for the Christmas Gift. I love the necklace the perfume and soaps are just so irresistible. I am going to spoil myself with the money, will buy clothes and take myself out.

THANK YOU for everything. With love from Thimna Kulati Thimna is fully funded.

Lutho – Grade 8 – Claremont High School Counsellor report Lutho is such a tiny but energetic young girl with lots of talent. She is not yet achieving her best academically and knows that she must put in much more effort iro her schoolwork. Lutho achieved an average of 68.36 for her final term, Grade 8 with her highest mark being 77% for Life Science and Creative Arts respectively. Her lowest mark is 61% for Mathematics.

Scholar update My name is Lutho Fassie, I attend school at Claremont High School , my first year in High School. I’ve had the best year ever. It was different compared to Primary school and I have learnt a lot. At home I live with my Mom, Grandmother, Uncle, my younger brother (5 years old) and my cousin (4 years old). I love my family as much as I love my Kay Mason Foundation family. I am an introvert, however I try my utmost best to socialise when I have to. I love staying indoors. Outside of school I am currently doing a bit of tennis and I would love to do more sport. Next year I will definitely do soccer and netball because I really feel that my life should balance. Academics and sport are both important. I need to feel relaxed and busy at the same time. The year 2016 went very quick. My final marks were enough for me to progress to the next grade, but to be quite honest I am not proud of the grades that I got. I could’ve done better I think. In a nutshell I would say that I got “average”. At the same time, I feel that this is a wakeup call for me, I have to put more effort into my school work in 2017. I have to go the extra mile. There were a few events that took place at school, informal ones and I really enjoyed them. We had the Grade 12 valedictory where we said our goodbyes to the matriculants. We also had our cultural day where we were allowed to come to school dressed in our culture or even someone else’s culture/religion. We got an opportunity to learn about the diversity that we have in our country (South Africa). This year I did not get any certificates. This is a feeling I cannot explain, I was devastated, heartbroken and sad. It just didn’t feel right, I still can’t get it out of my mind and I thank my mother for the support she gave me when I was breaking down. Kay Mason Foundation has had a huge impact on my life. What I like the most about it is the fact that we do not only focus on academics, we get support and great advice as well. The support is out of this world. Last but not least I would like to take this opportunity to thank my donors who are God sent. The fact that I have people who are helping me financially is a miracle. I really thank you from the bottom of my heart and I pray that you continue to bless other children like me. I am in one of the best school and it’s all because of you. Without you my mother would not be able to give me the quality education that I am getting.

I LOVE MY SCHOLARSHIP … THANK YOU

Anathi Ntilashe – Grade 9 – Cedar House Counsellor report Anathi continues to amaze us with her quiet dignity, her warmth towards others and her commitment to herself. She is also working hard on improving her self- confidence. Anathi continues to excel academically. She achieved the following: English B, isiXhosa A, Maths A, Life Orientation A, Design A, Geography B, Integrated Studies C+

Well done Anathi!

Scholar update The year 2016 has been momentous, busy and action-packed, but with your continuous support and love I have managed to finish it off with an explosion. There are highlights and achievements that I would like to share with you. It is said that grade 9 is one of the most difficult years in high school, but for me it wasn’t that difficult. I really worked hard and made sure that I was on top of my game. I set goals for myself and that contributed to my great performance. I tried to make sure that I handed in essays and projects earlier than the due date so that I could get extra marks and so that I could fix my mistakes pointed out by the teacher. This semester I took Business Studies, Accounting, History and my core subjects (Mathematics, English and Xhosa). I truly believe that I did well in these subjects even though there is always room for improvement. In September, Cedar House had their annual Celebration Evening which is basically an awards ceremony evening. I was awarded high academic achievement in Xhosa, Mathematics, Life Orientation and Design (The awards were based on my performance in the first semester). I was also noted for my incredible strong work ethic, demeanor, and quiet strength of character, empathy for others, possession of inner strength, high levels of aspiration, courage, commitment, generosity, thoughtfulness, passion and my infectious smile. I am really grateful for all these awards because they are part of what keeps me going every day. The subject choice evening for grade 9 students was a challenge and highlight for me. The evening made me realise that one does not stay young, but instead one grows and matures. Having to select subjects that could possibly determine my future was an exciting but scary task. I listened carefully to all of the teachers presentations on their subjects and I must say that all of the presentations helped me in making my decision. We were also informed about the careers in certain subjects. I chose the following subjects: Mathematics (core), Xhosa, Business Studies, Visual Arts and Life Sciences. English and Life Orientation are compulsory so I’ll be doing them as well. My life outside of school is incredible as I have formed relationships with children from a primary school down the road from our school. On Wednesdays a group of students from school would go down to Rosmead Primary and assist the students in grade 4 with English and Mathematics. I believe that I’ve formed an amazing bond with some of the students. I made sure that I went every week even though I was supposed to take some afternoons off. Seeing their smiles whenever we walked in and feeling their hugs has been something I find hard to put in words. I get to see a few of the students on a day to day basis and we always have random conversations about many different things. I always enjoy the conversations because I get the opportunity to be 11 years old again. This scholarship means the world to me and as cheesy as it may sound, it’s the truth. I would not be experiencing so many opportunities without the Kay Mason Foundation. I want to thank you my donor and everyone else who has made an effort in making my family’s life easier to live (including mine). You are part of the reason I smile and laugh. You are part of what gives me a purpose to live and continue to work hard. I would like to wish you and your families a great festive season. I hope you enjoy it and have a great rest as 2017 approaches us with new tasks. Anathi is fully funded

Aisha Fisher – Grade 9 – Claremont High Counsellor report

Aisha is a quiet girl who only speaks when spoken to. She is however always friendly and willing to assist others. This year her mother has another baby which added some pressure at home, but Aisha still worked hard and achieved very good results.

Aisha achieved an average of 79.4% for the final term. Her highest mark was 90% for Creative Arts, 89% for Life Orientation and 87% for Life Sciences. Her lowest mark was 69% for Mathematics. Scholar update Dear Donor

The third term started with an outing to Eskom. We went to the Palmiet Power station in Cape Town where we learnt about how electricity is generated. We also went on a hike on the mountain and got to see the huge underground generators. Our annual awards day also took place during the third term. All students, teachers, parents as well as the Minister of Education attended. I was awarded two certificates, one for Top Achiever in Life Orientation and the other for getting 80%+ average in all my subjects.

We also had a Grade 9 girl’s camp which was very exciting and educational. It was a three day camp and some teachers went with as facilitators. We were split into groups, each with our own facilitator, with whom we had to do many different activities at the camp. Some included: The tied up lunch where we had to make ourselves lunch while our hands were tied up with one another, this activity required teamwork. Another activity on the beach was the faith fall where you had to fall to the back and your peers would catch you. One of my favourites was the potjiekos competition which required us to make a pot of food over warm coals using ingredients such as vegetables, chicken and spices. None of us knew how to make this dish so we just experimented with all the ingredients but in the end it tasted delicious, even the teachers agreed.

In the fourth term I wrote an optional Maths Olympiad, I found it quite challenging but all my friends also took part so I was not alone. My friendship group expanded in these last two terms too, we now have a larger group of friends which is more enjoyable. The final exams for Grade 9 were stressful because we had so many subjects, which each contain many sections of work, to study. Our exams were written over a three week period. It was tiring and many of the nights I went to bed late. Maths was one of the difficult exams where I ran out of time whereas Creative Arts and Life Orientation were the easier ones. One of the choices I had to make were my subject choices for Grade 10. We were given a choice of two of the following three subjects: Geography, Life Sciences and Accounting. I chose Life Sciences and Accounting because I enjoy these subjects more and I will have a wider range of career choices. One of the things I am looking forward to next year is joining the touch rugby team at school. This is a female team and I decided to try something new since I never played this sport before.

Towards the end of the year we had our very own Claremont High colour run. It was one of the best activities the school had ever planned because everyone had so much fun. Teachers and students, all dressed in white, were running around the big field throwing colour powder in all directions at each other. After a 2 kilometer run we were all given ice suckers to cool down. The fourth term overall was very stressful and challenging because of the exams and because I have to maintain high standards for my scholarship. After getting our marks back after the exams I was glad that I had passed and I am grateful we have less subjects next year.

I look forward to relaxing during this holiday and maybe going out a bit with my friends and family. The first day of Grade 10 will be on my birthday which I'm not very happy about. Nevertheless I look forward to another year of excitement and challenges in 2017 and I hope to achieve even better results in Grade 10.

Sincerely Aisha. Aisha is fully funded.

Shantel Chat ambud za– Grade 9 – Gardens Commercial Counsellor report Shantel is a mature and positive person. She knows what she wants to achieve in life and has enough self-discipline and determination to achieve her dreams. We are very proud to have her as a KMF scholar.

Shantel achieved an average of 72.6% for term 4. Her highest mark was 81% for Mathematics and her lowest was 62% for Natural Science.

Scholar update The year 2016 has almos t come to the end. This year was like a rollercoaster ride. I had my ups and downs. There were moments of happiness, sadness and anger. There were moments I just wanted to give up but kept pushing. This year was the last I would be a junior.

The most hectic term was term four. This was the shortest term. There was only about three to four weeks to learn 4 th term work and to prepare for the final examination. At times, it was hard to focus when studying, but I managed to concentrate. The exams were not easy, but they were not too bad. There was no extra murals in the fourth term because of the short term. However, throughout first term to third term I enjoyed participating in the fitness club where I learned how to take care of yourself and how to keep fit. I also took Foreign Languages where I learned how to speak Spanish.

Grade 9 is the last year of doing compulsory subjects and for grade 10 I can choose the two subjects I want to take. Because my school is a commercial school, I can only choose between Accounting, Economics, CAT and Visual Art. I chose Accounting and Economics. I also chose to do Pure Math instead of Math Literacy.

I spent some of my Saturdays at the Kay Mason Foundation where I was attending the new program, Inside Out Me. During the sessions, I learned more about myself. I also had the opportunity to meet Henda and Lauren and got time to bond with my fellow grade nine scholars. I truly enjoyed it. All this was made possible by KMF and if not for them I would never have experienced something like that. I am very grateful to them. They have changed not only my life but others as well.

The only thing I hope for next year is that I enjoy next year as much as this one and to pass well each term. Shantel is fully funded.

Emashay Liebenberg – Grade 9 – Plumstead High Counsellor report Emashay is also a very mature young lady. She knows exactly what she wants to become one day (CA) and she is focused and works very hard. She is sometimes a bit too hard on herself but this shows her determination to achieve her goals. She is also developing in respect of her confidence levels and this is very exciting to witness.

Emashay achieved a 76.6% average for the 4th term and her highest mark was 92% for History and 81% for English and Creative Arts respectively.

Scholar update The year 2016 has almost finished. During my last six months of this academic year, I had to choose my subjects for next year, which was one of the most important decisions that I have ever made. It is also in these months that it had been the last time that I was doing certain subjects. Because of this, classes had become more intense and teachers much more serious. Teachers stressed the importance of all our schoolwork including projects and homework. My goal for this year was to pay attention in class and giving my best effort into completing all work given.

Academically this year, I was placed in the top 15 throughout the past terms. I also maintained my position as a librarian custodian at school. Outside of school life I completed another 10 km walking event named ' Blisters for Bread '.

In the past six months, one of my biggest highlights was being able to stick to and complete one of my goals of participating in these walking events which serve different purposes, whether it is to raise awareness about something or raise money for a particular cause. Another highlight for me was how many people I got to meet. Something that I realised was that I had become more comfortable communicating with others. This resulted in me becoming closer with my friends and more open with my family.

My biggest challenge this year especially during this past six months was being able to organise my time efficiently. I am normally an organised person, but I found my time unbalanced for all the different activities and responsibilities that I had to do. Fortunately I was able to get my priorities in order and in doing this I felt much more relaxed doing my daily activities.

Something that I was really looking forward to this year was the annual bazaar held by the church which I attend. It was my first time that I got to share my opinions with the committee as I usually just serve and sell at stalls. The event was a success and I was truly happy to be part of it. My family and I had the opportunity to go to Langebaan. It was great to go to a place which was surrounded with people who were rather welcoming of us. Langebaan is a place where people from different places can come together to relax and enjoy their vacation.

What does the scholarship mean to me? Firstly, it helped me become a better person. It is also helping me with how I get to express myself, how I approach different situations and how to present my thoughts. This scholarship has taught me how to overcome obstacles and how to trust myself. It is one of the things in my life that has made me the person who I am. Emashay is fully funded.

Kyle Jonkers – Grade 9 – The Settlers High Counsellor report

Kyle is a funny, respectful and positive young man. He has been raised with such good manners and it is a pleasure to work with him. We are also proud of his improved marks and know that he can do even better with more focus and hard work. He achieved an average of 62.10% for the 4th term. His highest mark was 73% for English. He increased his Maths mark by 19% from the first term and achieved 70%.

Scholar update The third term started with a bang. First dance period my class was informed that we were to cre ate a dance routine. This was difficult, because I was in a group that didn't want to make up their minds on moves. It took the whole term to make a routine. We completed it and were relieved.

During the fourth term it was a stressful time, because exams were just four weeks away. In our math class we learnt straight line graphs. I had no idea how to do this, so I went to extra classes at KMF. The tutor explained everything in detail and I started understanding it. The easiest work was algebra and probability. In the Afrikaans class I helped my Portuguese friend that was struggling. Only during the fourth term did he find out that he needed to pass Afrikaans.

Inter-house athletics prelims were excellent. I qualified for 100m hurdles, 1500m long distance, high jump and long jump. These are my usual events that I compete in. Due to my age group that changed, I had to compete with learners in a higher grade than me. These were called challenges. When I competed in the high jump and long jump challenges, I unfortunately did not make it due to the increase in height and distance to qualify. When I competed in hurdles and long distance I placed second. A boy from Ethiopia was first in both.

During my two years at The Settlers High School I have learnt many morals. I learnt teamwork skills and how to think out of the box. Teamwork started when we had our incursions and a workshop was held. Everyone were placed in random groups. Over three days we were successful and won the most decorative table award. The whole grade also completed a dance routine for a girl that left the school due to Cancer. We all enjoyed her presence that day.

I can say that I am truly grateful for this scholarship and I would never have experienced the athletic, sport and academic experiences that I faced in my years at The Settlers. I would never have had my friends to boost my confidence and have fun with.

Thank you so much for affording me this opportunity. Words cannot express how grateful I am to you and the KMF. Hope you have a blessed Christmas and a happy new year.

Yours sincerely Kyle Jonkers Kyle is fully funded .

Brian Africa – Grade 9 – Plumstead High Counsellor report Brian attended our mid -year review and spoke about his mother and how much he misses her. He did not realize how difficult it would be without her around. He managed to visit her during the July holidays which helped somewhat. Brian knows he needs to work harder on his school subjects and we hope that he will do much better in 2017. He is also a good soccer player and loves playing soccer at school. Brian has a lot of potential and now is the time for him to start believing in himself and be more focussed. Brian achieved an average of 58.10% and his highest mark was 76% for Afrikaans and 66% for English.

Scholar update BRIAN AFRIKA’S DONOR REPORT I would just like to thank Kay Mason Foundation for all that they have done for me as well as my donor. I would just like to inform you that these are the following topics I chose to write about. ACADEMICS Overall I think I did quite okay, but I know I could have done better. My goals are firstly to start off very good as I am entering into a new phase of my school career. Secondly my target for each subject will be to get 70% and higher. Classes have become quite challenging in the last two terms, but the best advice would be to listen and ask about anything that you do not know. There are lots of new things I learnt this year, but that would take forever to go through. Projects have been very difficult to get through as they came in bulks and weekends were sacrificed to finish them off. I enjoyed my tests these last two terms as they have played a major role in my reports. HIGHLIGHTS This year was a very exciting year for me. I had no sport to worry about the last two terms. I am really going to miss my friends this holiday as well as in class for the next three years as we have chosen different classes for next year. I have visited my mom in the July holidays and enjoyed it very much. The sad news is that my sister and I won’t be visiting our mother this festive season, but my youngest sister is here to visit us for the holidays.

LIFE OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL I travelled with my family to visit my mother in July. She now lives in the Northern Cape. Now as a coloured family you need to know that we love to have salads and meat on Christmas day, we always have trifles and peppermint tarts for desert. On the 26 th of December it is tradition for us to go to the beach with some of our left over Christmas food and we buy watermelon as well as sweet melon to cool down at the beach. Now on New Year’s Day we have, and note this is very important, we have to have a braai. That is basically how I spend my holiday with my family. WHAT DOES THE SCHOLARSHIP STILL MEAN TO YOU? This is probably the best thing that has ever happened to me. I really don’t know what or where I would be without Kay Mason Foundation. I would like to thank you my donor and Kay Mason Foundation for giving me the opportunity to prove myself and become successful in life. Brian is fully funded.

Oyam a Eland – Grade 9 – The Settlers High School Counsellor report Oyama has been through a difficult year emotionally and we hope that her circumstances will change in the new year. Her mother got married again and her stepfather did not want Oyama to stay with them. She stayed with her aunt, but missed her mother tremendously. During the last review her mother advised us that they will stay together again during the new year.

Oyama achieved an average of 59%. Her highest mark was 77% for Life Orientation and her lowest mark was 38% for Geography.

Scholar update My name is Oyama Eland. I live in which is a settlement near Mitchell's Plain. It is one of the biggest townships with a large population of different charismatic individuals. I am one of the Kay Mason Foundation scholars and this is my donor report.

This term I set a short-term goal for myself and that goal was of achieving at least 60% and above for my mathematics mark for the December results. I was really excited when I opened my report and to my surprise a 62% was standing next to Mathematics. I could not believe my eyes and I was proud of myself. It taught me that I can do anything I set my mind to. I also had another goal in mind and that was to get an A for my isiXhosa Second Additional Language. The same happened and I got an A. That was when I had a clear picture about goal-setting and that I am capable of doing anything that I set my mind to, but it was just a matter of perseverance and breaking every obstacle that was in my way of reaching my goals.

My highlight of the year was in early February. I was at an athletics event at school. I had made it into the inter-house team. I was going to run hurdles and that made me very excited, but nervous at the same time because a lot of people were counting on me and I didn't want to be the one who was going to disappoint them. Most of the sports events were finished before it was time for mine. I stood on the starting line and waited for the word GO! I ran as fast as I could and when I was about halfway through the race I slipped and fell. I didn't want to disappoint my other teammates so I stood up with pain rushing through my whole body and finished the race. Even though I came last I was very proud of myself because I didn't give up even when it caused me a lot of pain. I was taught that determination and being strong was the way to go when you have other individuals counting on you.

This year was a tough one because not only did my step-dad kick us [my mom and brother] out of the house, but my mom was also unemployed. I took a strain from the whole situation and it did affect my studies, but I decided that getting distracted by family issues was not worth it because if anything was to get me out of the situations, it was education. So I did everything to the best of my ability and managed to get through the whole of my examinations. I am grateful for the workshops KMF provided us with a great amount of life lessons.

If it was my door I would make sure I go through it every time. If it was vegetables I would make sure that I consume a reasonable amount of it every day. The scholarship is my pillar of strength. It is the reason I wake up happy to go to school every day. It is the reason I manage to wear a smile every day. It is so valuable to me more than gold, platinum and silver. It has helped me through a lot of challenges and I am so happy that I met the KMF family. Oyama is fully funded.

Shamiyah du Toit – Grade 9 – Rylands High School Counsellor report Shamiyah is a cheerful and friendly young woman with a positive attitude. She has settled into High School life and is enjoying Rylands High School. She has recently taken up rugby and is enjoying that tremendously. She loves animals and is working hard so that she can enter this field of study after school, although she is not 100% certain exactly what she will study.

Shamiyah achieved an average of 61.2% for term 4. Her highest mark is 76% for Technology and 74% for Maths.

Scholar update I know my marks has improved from the third term and I have confidence in my report. We didn't get many projects this term. The technology project I always enjoy because I get to design my own project. My class did a few tasks and I found it very interesting. I also realised that one of my strong points is team work. I am very fond of my team mates, putting their thoughts and ideas together and the end result is always excellent.

I recently attended our class party and I really enjoyed myself. At the beginning of the year I met new classmates and I learnt a lot from them. I was in a multiracial class with different cultures and different religions. During the middle of the year we got use to one another. At the end of the year we've grown to love one another and accept each other. My teacher, Ms S Kamish, played a huge role. "We work as a team" she'd drilled it into our heads during class. She has been amazing and very supportive. She even created a group chat with the learner’s parents. There were ups and downs in my class, some arguments, but arguments couldn't tear us apart. My class stood up for one another. 9E of 2016 is an inseparable class. I also learnt that it takes different people to make the world go round. I enjoyed myself with my 9E classmates.

I have recently been attending the KMF Inside Out Me Programme. It's been so helpful and I'm truly grateful. It taught us to accept ourselves and be who we are. I'm looking forward to future sessions. The KMF grade 9 scholars has grown a lot closer to one another. My mother, brother and myself attended a mass gathering which is called salaatul istikaah which means prayer for rain which was held at Chukker Road Sports Field, Kenwyn. The atmosphere was extremely calm. People were very humble and believe me, later that evening, it started to rain. God is very Merciful on mankind. It made me realise that we shouldn't take anything for granted as it comes from our Lord and our Lord can take it away at any given time.

Each year the scholarship offers extra tutoring classes which is a tremendous help for me. This year they've added the Inside Out Me Programme which is a huge plus for me because there was a few values that I've learnt about myself. I am truly grateful and fortunate for this program. In September of this year we held a gala event at D'Aria Wine Estate in aid of the 2017 junior scholars to better their school career. At the event we were introduced to our donors. We got the opportunity to entertain and serve them for the evening to show our gratitude and appreciation which is only a drop in the ocean. The past year has taught me to be more grateful, content and to be proud of yourself. It has taught me more patience and tolerance towards one another. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, Ms Betty Toban, for all the doors that you've opened and opportunities that came my way. I am forever grateful, and my aim in life is to plough back into the community the way that you do. I thank you. Shamiyah is fully funded.

Sanelisiwe Gorata – Grade 9 – Good Hope Seminary Counsellor report Sanelisiwe requested to transfer to another school because of her travelling difficulties. She currently travels by train which is not reliable. She has submitted her application to Livingstone High which is closer to her home but has not yet been accepted at Livingstone. She will continue at Good Hope Seminary until she can transfer to Livingstone. Sanelisiwe has really grown so much this year, especially emotionally and iro leadership. She attended the Releasing Eagles mentorship programme this year and it clearly has had a very positive impact on her as a person.

Sanelisiwe achieved a 64.4% average for Term 4. She did well in the following subjects: History 79%, Natural Science 75%, EMS 74% and Geography 71%. She still struggles with Afrikaans and achieved 48%. Scholar update I may not have everything I want in life but I’m blessed enough to have all that I need! For this- I am grateful! -LessonsLearned-

The year 2016 has been a tough year, but through it all I have learned that what actually keeps us going is not always the things we want, but the things we have. These past four school quarters I have achieved moderate results and I believe that I have put my best in every set of these results. This year I definitely had difficulties with some of my subjects such as mathematics. This required me to work harder and put in extra work to improve. Although I was expecting a huge improvement unfortunately I did not exactly reach it. This did not discourage me as I came to realize that I had to work even harder . I haven’t yet reached my full potential but I am working towards improving that. After our big choir performance at the schools talent show we were asked to perform for the class of 1989 reunion. It was so inspiring to get to see previous leaners who had attended our school coming together and embracing the moments they had shared with one another during their beautiful school years. In the beginning of the third semester I joined a peer counselling programme at school offered by two volunteering councillors. This programme encouraged peers who were willing to lend an ear to others to improve their listening skills and teach them strategic ways to deal with different issues around our school environment. I finished the training and got my peer counselling badge. I was so proud of myself. My highlights for this year were when I celebrated my friends 15 th birthday at the game reserve, performed in the youth conference at church and on the 4 th of December in Cape Town where there were Christmas festival lights in the CBD. This year I attended this event with my two best friends Mihle Sopam and Ziphozihle Makatesi and I got to see one of my favourite celebrities “Aka”. The relationship I have and the support I get from the Kay Mason staff means a lot to me. I thank each and every person who plays a role in giving me these wonderful opportunities. It is also a privilege to be one of the Kay Mason scholars. Thank you.

Aeesha Yacoob – Grade 9 – Good Hope Seminary Counsellor report Aeesha had a difficult time this year at school as some of her classmates were very disruptive. She considered transferring to another school but this discipline matter has been addressed and resolved at her school and she now wishes to remain there. Aeesha is a mature young lady and a deep thinker and we know that she can achieve great success in life. .

She achieved an average of 69.1% for the final term. Her highest mark was 79% for EMS, 78% for History and 73% for Geography and Natural Science respectively.

Scholar update Hello donor,

My name is Aeesha, I am 15 years old and I attend Good Hope Seminary for girls.

My academics in the third term of this year was not so good. I made the minimum requirements in most of my subjects. I was so disappointed in myself, I felt as if I let everybody down. We had to choose our subjects for next year and I chose biography, history and geography. Although math isn’t my strongest subject, I have decided to do it next year.

My school works a bit differently. The 2016 prize giving will only be held next year in January. Last year I got two awards and I hope I will be doing twice as good this year. Academically I feel like I can do much better. I will have to see how my end of year report card looks to see if all the late night studying paid off.

I no longer play hockey as I decided to start soccer. I was much more excited for soccer. My club which is offered through my school, The Muslim Student Association, one among many others did not do an outreach project in the third term. Instead we organised an outing for the girls who took part in the club. We went hiking one Sunday morning. It was wonderful. We are currently planning to go and visit an old age home, the date remains undecided but I could not be more excited.

I haven’t had anything exciting happen to me in the last few months. I feel completely bored with my life. It’s like I am stuck in the same sequence of events and nothing changes. For a teenager that is kind of sad. I hope now that it is December my life becomes a little more fun.

There is so much things I would like to do. I want to learn to surf, climb and ride a skateboard down a steep road in Bokaap. I want to go to rush and I want to swim at the beach with penguins. The list just goes on and on (and on). I hope I get time to do it all and still rest before the new year.

I would like to wish you a very happy festive season. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.

I AM HONOURED TO BE PART OF THE KMF FAMILY!!!

Amahle Precious Ncaza – Grade 9 – Counsellor report

Amahle’s mom obtained a nursing job this year that was very positive but unfortunately broke her leg very badly. During this time Amahle had to cope at home but she remained positive and with that special twinkle in her eye.

Amahle really cares about others, is always friendly and willing to assist wherever she can. We are proud to have her as a KMF scholar. Amahle achieved an average of 65.8% for the 4th term. Her highest mark was 96% for isiXhosa and 80% for History. Her lowest mark was 45% for Geography. Scholar update Well, this is yet anot her email to you. I will continue writing to you, every term. I hope you are doing well and I hope to be seeing you soon.

I must say, the third term has been challenging and very tense. A lot of pressure was placed on us. We had to make our subject choices for grade 10 (next year). I must admit, subject selection isn't child's play. I had a few challenges with making a decision, but I happily made my decision with the help of the Kay Mason Foundation. I will be doing physical science and history as selective for next year. I am quite nervous and overwhelmed by these subjects, but I know I will cope with the help and support of family members and friends.

Life outside school is basically very good and very comfortable. Life at school is amazing, the learners make every day special, unique and funny in a way. This year I will be getting separated from the learners that have been in my glass since grade 8. It's really going to be painful because all of my classmates were my second family.

The third term was very challenging (as I previously mentioned). I had to convince myself that I was going to pass all the subjects, because sometimes I felt like I wasn't coping with the pace at which the teachers were working. At the end of the day I pulled through and I made it.

The Kay Mason Foundation has played a huge role in ensuring that I make all the right decisions for my subject choices and supporting every grade 9 scholar in the scholarship. I honestly appreciate the Kay Mason Foundation along with all the donors. Without the donors all hope would be lost. I am extremely grateful.

The third term has taught me new things, showed me how to handle challenges and how to always stay positive. I honestly couldn't have learnt all of this without the support of my friends and family along with my second family (the Kay Mason Foundation). I am now ready to face more challenges and I know I will pull through.

It has been an absolute pleasure writing to you. I hope you have a very happy Christmas and may you and your family be protected. I hope to be seeing you very soon.

Yours sincerely Amahle Ncaza Amahle is fully funded.

Ameer Basadien – Grade 9 – Livingstone High School Counsellor report

Ameer is a soft spoken person, full of jokes and caring towards others. He has adapted well to High School life. We know that he can do much better academically with more focus and dedication. Ameer achieved a 64.5% average for term 4. His top marks were: 78% for Maths and Technology respectively, 77% for English and 70% for History. His lowest mark was 52% for Geography.

Scholar update As we approach the end of the year, it is time to reflect on what we’ve done thus far. The last 6 months of school was similar to the last year. Hype, activities and thinking, lots and lots of thinking and preparation for the examinations.

At the start of the school year, I had set a goal for myself which was to get over 70% for Mathematics for the first term as it was my strongest subject overall. When I got my report for the first term, I was delighted that I achieved 72%. I also did well in areas that was not considered my strong point, such as Economics Management Sciences.

Moving away from academics, only for a moment, there were several extracurricular activities. There was one school event that stood out from the rest; this marked our school’s 90 th anniversary Gala Evening Dinner on the 26 th November. The school planned to host a dinner where parents can have dinner as a fundraiser for the school.

Other than just academics, I am still a part of the school’s boys’ soccer team. As our soccer season has ended and during prize giving I received a certificate for participation.

As the year comes to an end, I am expected to excel in all of my subjects. It is also the time of the year where I am able to choose my subjects for next year. During the month of June I knew that I had to work even harder if I were to not only pass, but also to qualify for subjects that I wanted to do in grade 10. Throughout the examination period I studied hard and I did well in every one of them, and I have been accepted for my subjects I have chosen, being Art and Physical Sciences.

This year was a test filled with exams as well as a stepping stone for starting a career, but I am confident I will have passed all my subjects with flying colours. This is only the beginning of a big goal I had set for myself to become a Graphic Designer, and with the subjects I have chosen, I can become one. Ameer is fully funded.

Lance Jones – Grade 10 – Cape Academy for Maths, Science and Technology Counsellor report Lance has adapted well at Cape Academy for Maths, Science and Technology this year. During the latter part of the year, Lance opted to move back home and is no longer staying at the school hostel. Travelling to school was still a bit of a challenge during the last term, but he will start using alternative transport in 2017 which will hopefully resolve this problem.

Lance’s academic results decreased during the last term and will be addressed in 2017. His highest mark was 67% for Afrikaans and Maths respectively. Lance definitely needs to work much harder in 2017 as we know that he is capable of much more.

Scholar update Looking back to the year that has flown by, grade 10 has been a n exciting and challenging year.

I enrolled in a new school - Cape Academy of Mathematics, Science and Technology - where I met many new people and the majority have become friends. I found that many, if not all, of my friends are interested in the same subjects as I am, namely math and science. Most of all, the schoolwork was interesting and made it easier to grasp and later study for examinations. I just ended school on Friday and I wrote the exams moderately well. I hope I pass well. I do understand that next year I will have to apply myself even more as the work is more difficult and work load so much more in Grade 11. Also, Grade 11 results contribute to university applications and is in itself a motivation to go the extra mile and put in a little more.

As always a huge Thank You to the Kay Mason Foundation for providing financial and academic support. I am very grateful and highly appreciate the financial support that is provided to me by Mrs A. Jones and will make sure that I make use of this opportunity.

Lance is fully funded.

Logan Oppelt – Grade 10 – South Peninsula High Counsellor report Logan is a mature young lady who is dedicated and hard working. She achieved a bronze medal at the Eskom Expo for young scientists. She really seems to have a true love for science and excels in it and in maths.

Logan achieved an average of 82.75 for term 4. Her highest achievement was an outstanding 97% for Mathematics. She also achieved 91% for her extra subject, Advanced Programmed. Her lowest mark was 66% for English. We are very proud of Logan.

Scholar update This year I participated in the Eskom Expo for young scientists. This is a science fair where students are given the opportunity to show their scientific investigations to others. All scholars at my school were asked to conduct a scientific project. Only the best were chosen and I was lucky enough to be amongst the chosen few as it was the first time I participated. My project was about desalination which is removing the salts from seawater to make it drinkable. Our school projects were then displayed at U.C.T. and we were competing against other students from most of the top schools in the Western Cape. I won a bronze medal for my project. I am seriously considering Science as a future profession as I enjoyed my project and findings immensely. I was given the opportunity to go on an excursion with my Life Sciences class. We went to the pathology centre in the health sciences faculty at UCT. We were introduced to pathology which is the study and effects of diseases. This was really interesting for me and it was one of my highlights this year. Last term I came fifth in my grade at school. My class has all the top academic students and I have to work really hard to maintain my top 10 spot. I also recently wrote the November exams at school and it went well. I feel confident of achieving an above average mark. My favourite papers were Mathematics and Physics and my least enjoyable papers was Accounting and English. I enjoy school and its various challengers and my favourite subjects are Mathematics and Life Sciences. This December holidays I will be relaxing and soaking up the sun, but I will also be investigating the S.A.P.S. Forensics Centre in Plattekloof as I believe it is the biggest of its kind in Africa. Can’t wait to explore its Chemistry and Forensics lab.

As 2016 comes to an end, I would also like to thank Kay Mason staff once again for this wonderful opportunity and I appreciate all the support given.

Logan Oppelt Logan is fully funded.

Zandile Nyamza – Grade 10 – Cape Academy for Maths, Science and Technology Counsellor report

Zandile has adjusted well at Cape Academy for Maths, Science and Technology this year. She really likes her new school, but does say that the academic standard are much higher that what she was used to. She needs to put in a lot more additional work in order to improve her academic performance. Zandile achieved an average of 51% for Term 4. Her highest mark was 76% for Life Sciences and her lowest mark was 41% for Afrikaans. Zandile is a positive and friendly person and it is a pleasure to see how she is developing. Scholar update My academics This year in my academics I am not proud of my marks. They have been bad the whole year but I have improved in some subjects in this last term but not what I wanted. I have really tried to improve my marks this year but it has been a challenge and the work has been a lot harder. Being in a school that specialize in maths and science and these two subjects have been difficult but I went to tutoring class and they have helped.

My achievements My achievements this past year are not a lot coz I have being struggling in most of my subjects but I have been able to pass the year and I will be going to grade 11 which is going to be a greater challenge but I am willing to take it up. My achievement this year is that I will be getting a merit award for life sciences next year. My highlights My highlights in the past six months was being able to go to a good school and meeting new people, being able to live on the school grounds. I have also learnt new things through the workshop we had gone to with the KMF. The one workshop I enjoyed was the one at the vineyards where we had to sing for all the donors and got to meet new people and had a chance to promote the Kay Mason Foundation. We also had to do speeches and they were all wonderful. I also got to do a speech. I was really nervous to speak in front of people but it was a blast and I will do that again anytime.

My challenges My challenges have been in maths. I have been struggling in maths and physical sciences but I have tried to improve my marks this term. I improved in my maths mark this term and I was happy and my challenge was also creating a game for my information technology project. It was really challenging but I overcame it and created a car game and it worked with the help of my teacher and peers; they really helped. I also struggled in physics but I went to tutoring class and they helped and I improved a bit in my physics mark which made my mom proud. It was really hard this year being in a new school meeting new teachers and having to adapt to their teaching style and new peers and having to go to boarding school and starting a new phase, the FET phase. Although it was really challenging I pulled through and I will be going to grade 11.

Life outside school Life outside school has been different I have adapted to boarding school and it has been a great experience yet getting to stay on school grounds and being able to go to teachers after school to ask for help is positive. Is was really fun also being able to get help from your peers if you don't understand a topic has been a great help. When I go back home it was fun being home and there was a time were my mom left to go to Mozambique. It was hard for me but my brother made it better and it was fun living with my brother too but I really did miss my mom. What the scholarship still means to me... It still means a lot to me because the scholarship has taught me how to talk to people and it has built up my self- confidence and it has also believed in me and showed me a better outlook on life and I still appreciate it so.

Kagiso Yako – Grade 10 – Cape Academy for Maths, Science and Technology Counsellor report

Kagiso changed schools to Cape Academy for Maths, Science and Technology in the beginning of 2016. He did well in his exams and achieved an average of 68.14%. His marks are between 61 and 72% with Information Technology being the highest. Kagiso’s average marks for the last term increased by 13% since attending his new school. He is extremely focused on his academic work and determined to achieve success. Well done Kagiso!

Scholar update This was a tough year. For the first time I actually struggled an entire year. The challenges which I faced this year were hard to overcome, but the greatest of those was no other than Life Orientation. A subject which gave me my lowest mark this year. I was quite disappointed by this since LO is normally considered quite easy so that being my most challenging subject draws a little bit of attention towards me. Despite the fact that I found LO challenging, I still managed to pass it with more than 60%. I am aiming for a bit higher marks for LO next year as proof of overcoming my weakness. My other challenge was mathematics. Mathematics was a challenge only during third term. My mark for mathematics during third term was 49%. I was very disappointed by this so I had a target which I was aiming for and that target was 70%. If you notice 70% is a 21% increase from my previous mark. So whether this was laughable or not I did not know, but I knew I wouldn't be able to give up. I had to try and just like the wise man said, "where there's a will there's a way".

This year was very challenging that I cannot deny. But every time I overcome a challenge I consider that an achievement. So this year as mentioned above, I faced two main challenges LO and mathematics. 2nd Term was an exam term I knew that that was my opportunity to overcome Life orientation. I used this opportunity wisely and I received a code 6 for LO. That was my first achievement. And as if that term wasn't good enough I scored myself a distinction in Life science in third term. Third term was a great success, well it would've been if it weren't for two subjects. In third term I had my highest average, but still at a low 68,5%. I also had three 80% subjects IT, Life science and my home language isiXhosa. Also as I mentioned above, I was aiming for 70% in mathematics and I came quite close at 69%. That was a 20% increase from my third term mark so once again that was an achievement. I was quite pleased with myself as I managed to make a noticeable change in my marks.

There isn't much going on outside of school. But this year I saw my mother and also celebrated my half-brother's birthday and spent the weekend at her house. That was quite refreshing even though it was for a short while. I mean I have lived without my mother for a long time so seeing her is quite refreshing.

The Kay Mason foundation has been a life changer. I went to places which I couldn't even imagined going to. I even met great people and even made great friends. Being a part of the Kay Mason foundation is a life changer and I appreciate all those who lend a hand in changing me and all the other scholars' lives. So to all of you, I Kagiso Yako salutes YOU!!

Thank you and enjoy your holiday.

Dinique Frit z – Grade 10 – Norman Henshilwood Counsellor report Dinique had a very difficult year with many problems and challenged experienced within their household. Dinique is also a very independent person, shying away to ask for assistance. We are therefore extremely proud of her for approaching us, opening up and asking for assistance. Dinique has also tried to improve her marks but still struggles with science and maths.

Dinique achieved an average of 46% for her final term in Grade 10. Her highest mark was 75% for Life Orientation. Dinique did not do well in her Maths and we will discuss the possibility that she takes Maths Literacy instead of pure Maths in the beginning of 2017.

Craig Cupido – Grade 10 – Plum stead High Counsellor report

Craig is a quiet boy who shows lots of respect to others and he works hard to try and make his mother happy and achieve success. Although Craig is not a high achiever we know that he has worked hard and tried his best at school. Craig achieved a 47.57% average for the 4th term. His highest mark was 58% for Consumer Studies.

Scholar update Dear Sir/Madam

My name is Craig Cupido and I am 17 years old. I was born on the 11th July 1999. I am an only child to a single parent. I live in Cape Town, South Africa the most beautiful city in the world with my mom. I have just completed grade 10 at Plumstead High School and will fetch my report in the next few days. I cannot believe how quick time passes by and realized that I only have two years left of school.

When I complete high school I would like to study further and become an Architect. I love drawing and am passionate about designing. I do know it takes hard work and many sacrifices to achieve good grades and be the best that I can be. I am your average kind of kid. Some say I am quiet. I have not been to detention as long as I have been going to school or in any disciplinary hearings.

High school is challenging and lots of peer pressure goes along with it, but I have come to deal with these challenges. My mom and I are so gratefull for this scholarship with The Kay Mason Foundation. It covers my school fees, travelling, Uniform and stationery etc., which is very expensive if you want to go to a good school. We really appreciate everything that they do for us. This is really a gift from God and we thank Him each and every day.

I am so excited for my new grade and what it has in store for me. School will be closing soon for the summer vacation and in the next few weeks we will be celebrating Christmas.

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter, I want to wish you and your family a Blessed Christmas and happy holidays.

God Bless Yours faithfully CRAIG CUPIDO

Ziev Kazanski Grade 11 – Camps Bay High Counsellor report

Ziev is a confident, hardworking and fun person. He does not just achieve great results academically, but also excels in sport and culture.

Ziev achieved an average of 85.86% for the final term. His results were: English 76%, Afrikaans 83%, Mathematics 94%, Life Orientation 84%, Dramatic Arts 86%, Life Sciences 85% and Physical Science 94%

Well done Ziev! We know that you will do well in your final year of school in 2017.

Scholar update Dear Reader Life takes many twists and turns, some being so sudden that sometimes one needs to kick one’s shoes off and take a break. Throughout this past year, I had some amazing times, and some not-so-amazing times, but I am glad to be able to come out the other side of this year with some myriad achievements to look back on. Firstly, I ended up as being third in my grade this year, with an average of 85, 86% of all my subjects, only losing first place by a meagre 0.57%. I always aim for first place academically, but am, on the most part, satisfied with this result. I achieved 93% in physical sciences and 94% in mathematics, and intend on improving the above marks next year so that they are as close to 100% as I can muster in my matric year. My worst mark was for English, which might not seem too bad when one discovers that it is 76%, but by my standards is sub-average. I intend on improving my English mark next year to achieve a mark above 85% - a feat more easily said than done. Considering the last fact which I mentioned in the above paragraph, improving my English mark so that it was over 80% was one of my greatest struggles this year. Another issue, which always seems to come up, is my struggle to balance everything I do. I had my science expo presentation, and got to the provincial level of the science expo competition; I had our grade 11 fashion show, which I modelled for and helped organise; I also had my everyday obligations and commitments, like going to my Church, chores, going for runs with friends, and maintaining my relationships with those friends. With a flood of activity comes achievements, however. I auditioned for my school musical next year and got the male lead role, which I am excited about. I did get third in grade, which cannot be lightly dismissed, since it is not an achievement obtained with the wave of a hand. Finally, I am almost certain that I will be in the Representative Council of Learners next year, and will be applying for Chairperson as well. My personal affairs, however, have not been completely smooth. One of my school mates and my grandmother passed away, which was not something I took lightly. There has been a lot of stress on my lines this past year, but I am glad to be able to compile this and can tell the tale. 2017 is my final year, so I am excited to make the most of it and make it my year – one to remember! Aqeelah Davids Grade 1 1 – Good Hope Seminary High School Counsellor report We are very proud of what A qeelah has achieved in 2016. Since she has moved to her new school she has truly blossomed and we are so impressed with her development. Aqeelah has changed into this positive and driven person with energy and ambition, as well as a sparkle in her eye. She was also elected as a prefect of her school for 2017. Aqeelah achieved an average of 57.3% for the 4th term. Her highest mark was 73% for Life Orientation and 61% for English. Aqeelah struggles with Mathematics and achieved 45% for Mathematical Literacy. Scholar update End of year Donor Report I can honestly say that this year has been a very difficult year. During the year of 2016, I have learnt many things, which have broken me down and which has built me up as a person. I’ve learnt who to trust and who to stay away from. During this year there was a lady, who came to speak to us about her experience at Good Hope Seminary High, as she is an ex-pupil. She said “You young ladies should take the opportunities given to you because once that opportunity is gone; you will never be able to get it back.” After some time, thinking about what this lady had said I was determined to take every opportunity that came my way. During the second term the Interact Club had their induction. It was a splendid evening as we were praised for the work we had done so far and we received our Interact badges. Members of Rotary, as well as our parents were invited to the induction.

A picture of the executives receiving their interact badges. I also had to do job shadowing as it is part of the curriculum. I job shadowed at an art gallery called Stevenson. I learned that it takes time and effort to create the installations that the artists request for their exhibitions. I took part in a peer counselling workshop. The workshop took place every Monday morning in our assembly period. The workshop was very educational and I learnt that there are certain guidelines you have to take when another student asks for counsel. An oath was taken before we were officially became Peer Counsellors and that oath was to always keep someone’s issues or problems, confidential. We also received a Peer Counselling certificate. The workshop has taught me that I am really a caring person and I would do anything to help another person in need. There were quite a number of girls who joined this workshop. Then I took part in a self-esteem course as well. Unfortunately, I did not attend this course from the beginning because I thought I did not need it at the time, but I then decided to take the course a couple of weeks later because exams were well on the way and I had been dealing with some issues myself. This course taught me how to express myself as well as control and calm myself down and I would gladly take this course again next year if it is up and running. Both the workshop and the course were co- ordinated by two of the school counsellors. I took part in the Matric Ball Committee and I really enjoyed

assisting in making the matric ball invites and name tags. I also assisted in decorating the venue for the matric ball. The place that the matric ball was hosted at is called Suikerbossie in .

A picture of the decorations During the third term “candidates” (candies for short) were selected for the Leadership Team/ Prefect team of 2017. There were 37 candidates in total. We then had to go through a whole process of making posters about ourselves and giving speeches during break times. The speech was really nerve wracking. Once this was over, the grade 10’s and current grade 11’s voted for whoever they thought was best for the job. All 37 candidates were given letters which stated that they had either made it onto the Leadership Team or not. I was so surprised when I read that letter and I found out that I was accepted into the team. The twenty girls that were selected onto the Leadership Team were then instructed to attend training sessions to discuss the many aspects of what leadership is about.

A picture of the training sessions

A picture of the Leadership Team of 2017

A picture of the three heads of the LT team. From left to right; Head of RCL, Deputy Head girl and Head Girl Then Valedictory finally came and the Leadership team members were officially called out. We were given a rose and an A5 page with an oath written on it.

A picture of me and the Deputy Head Girl and another LT member We have different portfolios that we had volunteered to do, for example, I volunteered to do the secretary portfolio and I write down the minutes of every meeting that the Leadership Team has. I am also in charge of the locker sales. We also do regular uniform checks. I have come up with some ideas for next year as we had a meeting about changing things up a little so I came up with the idea of making proper cheerleading uniforms for events such as our annual athletics day and gala. I also came up with the idea of making a year book for the matrics only and to raise funds for the year book we could sell t-shirts of the house colours on the swimming gala. The interact club then assisted in the Rotary Family Health Days which took place from the 12 – 14 October 2016. There was HIV testing, TB testing, eye testing, blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes testing. I got myself checked for everything and I am proud to say that I am very healthy. The Interact Club recently did the Santa Shoe Box drive, were we selected a home for abused women and children and we each decorated a shoe box and put some essentials into the boxes.

A picture of the boxes we made for the children and their mothers. The grade 11 Geography class went on a hike on Silvermine to the Elephants Eye Cave. It was such a beautiful view.

A picture taken from inside the cave It was a hot a sunny day without a cloud in sight. The hike was kind of difficult for me because I had not exercised in a while, so my muscles suffered badly the following day. I would not mind going on this hike again though.

During an English lesson we were discussing Malala Yousafzai and ways to keep young girls in school and one of my classmates was upset due to the fact that condoms are free when sex is a choice and sanitary towels are ridiculously expensive and having your period once a month is not a choice. So with this the Sunshine Campaign was born. We did some research and found out that approximately 2-3 million girls miss out on school work every year because they cannot afford sanitary towels. These girls turn to resources such as leaves or even soil when they are menstruating, which therefore puts their health at risk. Our vision for this campaign is to ensure that sanitary towels will be available to all girls without any cost and our mission is to ensure that every female, especially teenagers will have access to free sanitary towels so that they so not miss out on school work during their menstruation period. Pick n Pay has sponsored us with a gift card in which we will buy sanitary products.

Thumeka Bakajana (Thumi) Grade 1 1 – Camps Bay High Counsellor report Thumeka has had a turbulent year as her mother became very ill and also lost her job. Thumeka has a very close bond with her mother and these things really impacted on her emotionally. She even used her holiday periods to work in order to earn money to support herself and her mother. Despite all these challenges Thumeka still achieved an average of 53.57% for the 4th term. Her highest mark was 80% for isiXhosa and 67% for Dramatic Arts.

Thumeka is an introvert who cares a lot about others, but does not easily open up or speak about her own needs, fears or problems. We believe that she will benefit from joining the mentorship programme and this will be discussed with her in 2017. Thumeka also loves animals and she currently has a new puppy that brings her a lot of joy. We are extremely happy that Thumeka’s mother again found employment at the end of 2016 and know that this will have a stabilizing effect on Thumeka. Scholar update 2016 has been a challenging year. Classes have been fun and I’m starting to connect with some of my teachers and enjoy being in classes. Accounting has been a challenge since the beginning of the year and we have decided that it would be best for me to change the subject. In term 3, I was challenged in Drama with Shakespeare and we got the pleasure to work on it again for our final practical. I tried my hardest and worked on it over and over and I’m very satisfied with the final product I put out. After writing my final exam for business I felt really good and more than satisfied with the studying I put in. Mathematics for term 1 and 2 I felt really confident about and due to being absent a lot in term 3 my marks dropped. I put in a lot of hard work for term 4. I don’t know how I feel about maths, but I’m praying I was able to increase my marks.

In term 3, I got 80% for IsiXhosa and my highest mark for English which was 64% (this year). I was very proud of myself. This helped me going into exams because I was keen on studying and challenging myself to get higher than I did although I know I always struggle during an exam term. For business I also got 60% which was my highest mark to date.

Term 3 was very tough for me. My mom got unemployed and everything happened at once. I’m not going to lie, this did affect me and distracted me from my school work. I was always thinking of ways to save money and make things easier for my mom. I also found work at , with the money I got as my salary I used it to do my hair and for lunch. All the small things so my mom didn’t have to stress about such things.

Having this scholarship has been the best thing that has happened to me. They are second family and were there for me when I needed them most. I can’t say thank you enough. I’m very grateful and happy that I’m one of the few children that have such good influence and a place that can help me when I need help.

Keshia Rachel Linnett Grade 1 1 – South Peninsula High Counsellor report

Keshia has had a difficult year as she really struggled with maths and physics. She also experienced problems with her maths teacher who speaks very negatively to the pupils in his class. This has been addressed with the acting principal of the school and we hope to see some changes in 2017. Keshia has however decided to change to maths literacy in 2017 to ensure that she does not attend maths with the same teacher again. This will be addressed with the school and with Keshia early in 2017.

Keshia achieved an average of 63.57% for the final term. Her highest marks were 80% for Life Sciences, 76% for English and Afrikaans respectively, 73% for Music and 72% for Life Orientation. Scholar update Dear Paula

Another year has to come to an end and I'd like to thank you once again for being a huge part of it. I decided that the best thing to do concerning my academics is to make a few subjects changes. Even though I know that I can do so much better in maths and physics I just feel that the unnecessary stress that comes with the two subjects is too much for any student to handle. Noeline, myself and my parents had a meeting with my acting principal to discuss the behaviour of my math teacher, but I have the feeling that nothing about his arrogant and rude behaviour will change in a matter of nine months. Therefore I decided to swap to Mathematical Literacy and focus on improving my Physics marks. Hopefully I can get into university for Psychology with those two subject choices. I wasn't chosen as prefect for this year and when I asked why I was told that students who are active in the arts department are seldom chosen because they're always too busy with productions and fundraisers; prefects need to be on duty at all times. We will also be receiving our academic reports on the 6th of December. I did some of my community service hours at a hospital this year. My job was to sort and file social service reports dating back to 2006. It wasn't the most exciting job in the world, but the feeling that came with knowing that I helped someone made all the difference.

I have a doctor’s appointment on the 14 of December with a dermatologist who will hopefully be able to treat my hyperhidrosis. I'm a little bit nervous that the treatment might not work or be too expensive, but at the same time I'm really excited to hear what the doctor has to say.

My family is doing well too. My youngest nephew will be a year old on 25th of December and my other nephew will be going to preschool next year. My mom and dad are doing great. I really hope that I get into a good university to take some of the weight concerning my education off their shoulders. I'll be the first one in my family to go to university so it means that I'll have to work ten times harder next year.

Thank you for the books you got me for my birthday. I love both of them but I especially loved ' Will Grayson Will Grayson'. I'd like to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

Kindest Regards Keshia Linnett

Scholar update Good day sponsors and Kay Mason staff, grade 11 was the toughest, busiest and stressful year of my high school career. The workload regarding my school work increased and resulted in lesser time for extra mural activities. The preparation for the September and November examination took a physical strength on my body but mentally and spiritual I pull it through.

On most occasions I have to sacrifice my free time and dedicate it towards my school work. Monday’s to Thursday’s I made arrangements with the various teachers in the subjects which I found difficult to handle to do extra classes after school to tutor me on it. I found mathematics on different occasions very difficult to understand, but I can say that I have put a lot of time into that subject to achieve a good passing rate into Mathematics. I can tell myself that I have pulled it through. I was excited about grade 11. It learned me a lot off new learning areas within a higher grade. However, it was probably the most difficult year in terms of academics as the marks are noted for university acceptance. Grade 11 taught me a lot and I look forward to my upcoming results. I am also glad that the KMF could be off assistance in tutoring and of help to achieve these great things and support on everything.

On the 2 nd of October 2016 it was my Confirmation. I was very excited at first, but eventually on the day the nerves kicked in. I spent my day with family and friends. It was a nice to receive the sacrament of Confirmation and thanks to my parents what helped me through this journey. On the 4 th and 5 th of October 2016 I did extra job shadowing at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa. It was a two-day program at the Institute. The program started at 9 o’clock and ended at 3 o’clock. We took part in various programmes and were showed the different setup within the facility; they also briefed us on various careers within sporting fields, and knowledge around the practical implications of the different fields. I enjoyed the experience and introducing to new development in the specific career which I looking forward to go into. At our school they started demolishes the mobile units and is building new classrooms which will be finish in October 2017. Our school has been fighting for the new building of the classrooms for over 25 years and eventually they started the 4 th term, October 2016. The school is certainly smaller than it used to be so it takes us longer to change from one period to the next. I’m looking forward to see the outcome of these buildings and hopefully it would be done before I leave South Peninsula High School.

My high school career at South Peninsula High and being part of Kay Mason Foundation has changed my outlook in life. It was a part of God’s plan and greater plans that he have for me in the future to make a change in myself and also in other’s lives which I will serve.

Avile Bayibhile Grade 1 1 – Counsellor report Avile is an amazing young man and we are very proud of him. He is very respectful, caring and positive and works hard a achieving success. He has also been elected as a prefect at his school and certainly has good leadership skills.

Avile achieved and average of 58% for his final term in Grade 11. His highest mark was 78% for Life Orientation. In both Business and Consumer Studies he achieved 69%. We know that Avile can achieve even higher marks if he plans better and becomes a bit more focused. Scholar update Another year has pa ssed and it has been a fun and perseverance year. This was the year where one really had to let sink in that you are one step closer to finishing high school and with that said you had to work hard. So you could exit your high school life with high standards. The year has been very challenging however. With the work even more difficult now so as to prepare us adequately for the grade ahead which is grade 12. I had my ups and downs and experienced lots of challenges specifically academically with mathematics. It has been the one subject that I've constantly struggled with. Not because I can't do it, but the standard of the work was more than what I was used to and also trying to cover everything in the syllabus - not enough time for the educator to teach everything sufficiently. Math is a subject that expects one to practice every day and I have been lacking that discipline, which is the cause of my low results and if I don't instill that discipline now I’m afraid it’s going to haunt me in the year ahead. The upcoming year, I believe, is one of my most important high school years and not only for math but other subjects as well.

I’m excited for 2017 as it is my last year at high school. I turn 18 and will become a young adult and I know I will do myself and other people who believed in me proud in my final results. I’m nervous for it, but I’m also determined. I have been elected as a prefect at my school which is really a big honour and privilege. I am really humbled at this because to be selected there has to be certain characteristics that you possess and for teachers and fellow students to see these characteristics in me really is humbling and I am very grateful for the opportunity to lead fellow learners. Hopefully towards the right direction and I know I will.

Kay Mason Foundation, thank you for your existence, you are helping many South Africans reach for their dreams.

Grade 12 learners of 2016: Please note that we are awaiting their academic results for the final matric examination in January 2017. Sipho Fanti – Grade 1 2 Camps Bay High Counsellor report

Sipho is such a positive person with diverse talents. He has been a prefect at his school, does well academically, excels in karate, sport and cultural activities. We are waiting with great excitement to receive his results in January 2017.

Scholar update The year of 2016 has been a great one for me. It has been a year of achievement, fun, discovery and new experiences.

Looking back on my 5 years of high school, I’ve come to realise how great it has been being at Camps Bay High School. I have learnt so much about myself as well as other people from sports to academics to culture and beyond. Before school closed for the June holidays I was watching The Expresso Show and the director of The International ARTS Talent Showcase (IATS) was speaking about auditions that will be happening in Cape Town on the 2nd of July for this showcase in which singers, actors, dancers and models can get the opportunity to get scouted for an international showcase called the Applause Rising Talent Showcase (ARTS) in Orlando, Florida. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity so I decided to take the chance and audition as a dancer. I did my audition on the 2nd of July among many other artists around Cape Town and I was selected to go forward and perform in Johannesburg among many others who were chosen around South Africa in October. There, we performed in front of international scout Kim Myers who would select those to perform in Orlando in front of international agencies and an opportunity to start their careers as an artist. I am proud to say that I am one of her selections. I’ve been invited to the ARTS in Orlando, Florida to perform in front of agencies from the US, Europe and Asia in July 2017.

Currently, I am searching for sponsors to assist me with the trip’s expenses. I believe that I will learn a lot from this experience and be able to move forward with my career. If it is meant to be, then it will be.

On the 23rd of July we had our Matric dance at the Bay Hotel in Camps Bay. It was an awesome night spent with my friends. Everyone cleaned up really well. The teachers and parents did a great job in the venue and decorations and overall ambience. My next mission was the prelim exams. After the dance we had a month to prepare for prelims. I was quite nervous for them but they turned out well. I received 80%+ for English, IsiXhosa, Art and Life Orientation so I’m very proud of that. I also improved in Accounting and Physical Science from the June exams, however I unfortunately dropped in Maths, which I was very disappointed with. All in all my average was a 79%.

My final exams were very good. I don’t want to be complacent about the results but I felt that they were better than the June exams and the prelims. I’m hoping that I did well.

I’m also proud to say that I’ve been accepted at UCT (as long as I maintain my current marks) for a BA General degree in Humanities in which I can study a wide variety of fields.

On the sports front I’ve been awarded the Team Award for soccer and the trophy for Dedication to Soccer. I also received a Team Award for basketball. I also had my grading for karate on the 26th of November hoping to receive my black belt. At the time of writing this report I don’t yet know if I have graded to black belt, but we’ll be told soon.

In October when schools opened from the holiday, we, the Prefects, spent our last night as Prefects at a restaurant in Hout Bay. We reflected on the year, the work we’ve done and the relationships we built. It was a fun night and it was

great to see the appreciation of the teachers who were managing the body. The next day the school held its annual prize giving night called Celebration. There, I did a dance performance and a choir performance. I also achieved 10 th position in Matric for academics and I received the Sporting and Scholastic Award and Trophy for 2016. It was a wonderful night of performances and awards for everyone; the night ended with the naming of the new Prefects. We handed over the badges for the new Prefects on stage and everyone was filled with emotion and happiness.

The next day which was a Friday, the school held its Valedictory Ceremony for us, the Matrics. This day was bitter- sweet because it was our final official day of high school. There were hugs and tears left, right and centre. The teachers showed a video of memories and funny moments from the past 5 years that we, as a grade, share. Everyone was emotional including the teachers. After the ceremony and the photos and the goodbyes, we were treated to a special Matric lunch before we ended school. It was fun and we enjoyed light hearted jokes coming from teachers and students alike. At the beginning of the year I would never have said that all of these things would happen. I would never have thought I’d travel to Jo’burg for the first time or achieved what I have or even learn all that I have. It’s been nothing less than a great year and I’m looking forward to the future.

The past five years have helped me grow as a person and I am so grateful to the KMF, my donors and all those who have supported me throughout. They say it takes a village to raise a child, well I feel that I was blessed with the best kind of village.

Thank you for changing my life!

Amy Fredericks - Grade 1 2 Camps Bay High Counsellor report

Amy is a positive young lady with big dreams. She has worked hard despite having some tough times at home this year and eventually she has moved in with a school friend for the last half of 2016 which really assisted her a lot to focus on her schoolwork. We are waiting to receive her matric results in January 2017 and see what she has achieved.

Scholar update The day has arrived – the last day of my high school career and I miss it already. Five years later and I have learnt and grown so much as an individual because of the guidance and support of the KMF and Donors.

During these past two terms, I wrote the most important exams, the preliminary and final exams. Each exam had its own challenges. However, I am confident that I will pass and am able to make the KMF and my parents proud when I receive my results on the 5 th January 2017.

Sports & Cultural Activities: In term 3 I received my final hockey award in high school- hockey 1 st team merit award. The skills that I have learnt through the sport, not only can be used on the field, but influence my daily interactions with others.

Community Service: For my community service, I assisted at a day-care in Brooklyn for four days. I was in a class with children between the ages of 18-36 months. The best feeling was making a difference in the kids’ lives and seeing the smiles on their faces when I walked into the room. I will definitely continue doing community service as I enjoy helping others. I enjoyed the daily activities, routines and interactions with the children and having to give back to the community.

In conclusion, I would like to thank Richard Mason, Noeline de Goede, Chrismaine Stoop, Lindie Ammon and everyone involved at the KMF and Donors for everything you have done for me and my family throughout my high school career. I have had some highs and lows, but this has taught me valuable things. I would not be where I am today without your help and that of all the donors and sponsors.

I will always be grateful to the KMF and the many things you have done for me. It’s been an experience being faced with so many challenges. I look forward to the next chapter in my life. The KMF family will always be part of my family and I hope someday I can become a donor to sponsor children in similar situations as me. Thank you once again and all my love. Enjoy the festive season and blessings always.

Laycon Lewis – Grade 1 2 Rhenish Girls High Counsellor report Laycon has always had a difficult home life to deal with, as she does not have a good relationship with her mother. It again resurfaced this year although Laycon has actually started living with her mom in the previous year. We hope that Laycon and her mother will be willing to work matters out between themselves as she is now again living with her grandmother after their last incident. Laycon has worked so hard this year and we are holding our thumbs to receive some good final matric results in January 2017. It has been an absolute pleasure to have Laycon as a KMF scholar and we know that she can achieve anything she puts her mind to. Scholar update Dear Cathy

I don't know where to begin. This year has been a rollercoaster of excitement, anticipation and also disappointment. It seems like yesterday when I started my journey at Rhenish as a miniature grade 8, wondering if I would survive the long walk to adulthood. Now, I find myself on the cusp of it, without the comforting arms of the Rhenish walls to cushion me. It saddens me to think back on all the memories made and realise that they've all come to an end. William Shakespeare's poem, "Sonnet 30: When to the sessions of sweet, silent thought" is an acute description of how I feel when I think back on all the irreplaceable memories I made at Rhenish.

At times, it has been a grueling road to travel, but every Grade 12 will agree: "The importance of doing your homework everyday should not be second-guessed!" I think if I didn't manage to complete my homework every day, I would probably have failed a few subjects. Physical Science and Mathematics have been the most challenging. When I was in grade 9, I said to myself, "How hard can maths and science really be?" And boy, did I learn that I had underestimated the load and the difficulty of it. Tutoring and constant support from my teachers and also the teachers at a school near my grandmother's home, Cloetesville Secondary School, has brought me through Mathematics and Physical Science and I am proud of myself for not giving up and changing subjects. In all this, I've learnt that my strong point is writing and languages. All these years, I overlooked how amazing my language skills are. And because language is a compulsory subject, I used to think it can't be my strongest subjects because "everybody else takes it too" and one afternoon when I had a dark cloud of emotions hanging above my head, I picked up a pen and started writing. The words just came from somewhere within me and I knew.

I knew that I should somehow do something to express the oppressed talent I've had all these years. I am currently writing a short story about a woman who decides to leave her life as an overqualified botanist and live in a monastery because she believes that the "fast-paced career life" isn't good for her. She soon learns that her profession is a huge part of her and that she can't run away from who she is. I'm still trying to figure out how to end it off, but as soon as I have finished it, I will send it to you. Next year, I will go on to study either Pharmacy or Medical Bioscience at the University of the Western Cape. I have been provisionally accepted for both, as well as for Food Science at Stellenbosch University. I am very excited and I will also be job-shadowing a pharmacist for a while during the summer holiday. Pharmacy is something that just hit me when one day I was trying to 'Google' what the side effects of the energy drink I drank the previous day was. I started reading about how minerals are absorbed by the body, which substances affect our hormones and organs and it all just became a whirlwind of interest in Pharmacy. I then decided to apply to study Pharmacy and here I am!

My English teacher said that with my writing skills, with the addition of my science and research skills, is bound to make me an excellent researcher. Researchers in a pharmacy background do extensive research and testing on chemicals used for medical and biological purposes and are expected to give accurate and complete reports to developers. It's like music to my ears. I can incorporate my love for writing (in this case, reports) into my passion for finding out how things work and experimentation (science and pharmaceutics). I was sold to the idea before she even finished her sentence. I, however, also want to pursue some creative writing as well, and who knows, maybe I'll get to write a novel somewhere in the future?

This year has been a tough one for me in terms of family matters and psychological matters. Despite the amazing night I had at my matric ball on the 16th of July, the days before it were most probably the worst days of my life. My mother and I haven't prepared a lot for my matric dance, but we found a dress and even got a discount on it. It wasn't exactly the dress I wanted, but when I put it on to fit it for the first time, I absolutely fell in love with it. Everything went well and my mom said that she will let me know when she has enough money to buy heels to wear to the dance and I told her not to worry about it as I was planning to wear and older pair I had in my closet. She also wanted to have a little celebration before I depart for the dance where we'd have some sparkling wine and a few snacks. Somewhere something must have gone wrong, because two days before the dance, she started arguing with me about the snacks for the celebration and little things like that. I told her that I don't want any celebration because I know that she doesn't have much of a budget for it. She then came up with what saddened me the most. She said that I am being influenced by another lady in our community who is almost like a second mother to me. She continued to say hurtful things like that she is withdrawing from my life and that I can go and live with the abovementioned lady. I know it sounds so small, but it completely crushed me. Cathy, after all these years, my mother believes that I don't respect her as my mother, that I "want someone else to be my mother". I can't stop thinking back to the time when I lived with my grandmother (from the age of 4 to the age of 13) because she decided to move away with her new family and I WISHED every day that she would come and get me to live with them. Every day, all I wanted to do was be with her. After she said a whole lot of other hurtful things, I decided to leave and go to my grandmother's house. She then did the most horrible thing that I think any mother could do. She refused to give me my matric dance dress and cancelled EVERYTHING. After making it through school for 12 years, you'd think your mom would grant you one night of celebrating with your grade for the very last time. My grandmother was determined to have me go to the dance, and with not one cent to her name, she and her neighbour organised a dress, shoes, make up and transportation to the dance in 3 hours on the day of the dance.

I am now living with my grandmother and she has been an amazing support during my exams. Some nights I would just start thinking about all the things my mother said and burst out crying, but I know that I didn't deserve what she did and I promised myself to look past it and carry on with my life even though she has now completely blocked me and my grandmother from contacting her.

On the bright side, I can finally say that I have completed 12 years of schooling. It really rolls off your tongue. I can also say that I would not have been able to do so if it weren't for the Kay Mason Foundation team and of course, your contribution to my life. You have no idea what a difference you have made. Cathy, you are one of those people that young people can look up to and say, "One day, I want to be just like her." Thank you, firstly, for being the inspiration that you are and also, for making such a big difference in my life. I told my grandmother a bit about you the other day and she said, "Laycon, you really have to be truly grateful to this woman and I hope that one day you'll do the same to help others just like she helped us." And there's no doubt that one day, I want to make a difference in someone's life like you have done in mine. My journey at Rhenish has come to an end, but I can't wait to start a new one. Thank you so much for everything.
