3 THE STORY OF THE WIZARD OF OZ

Dorothy and her little dog lived on a farm in with Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. One day, their neighbour, the horrible Miss Gultch, took Toto away from Dorothy but luckily he escaped and came back to her. They went to a gypsy caravan where the mysterious Professor Marvel told her that her Aunt Em very sick! As they rushed to get back home, Dorothy and Toto got swept into the middle of a fearsome .

When Dorothy woke up, she realised she was not in Kansas anymore. Instead she found herself in an enchanting and colourful place called Munchkinland! There she met the and a good witch called Glinda who told her that they were very thankful to her as she managed to kill the when her house fell on her. Just then, the witch’s sister, the , appeared and was furious to find that Dorothy was wearing the magic as she wanted them for herself!

Glinda sent the wicked witch away and told Dorothy to go to the Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City to help her get back to Kansas. Dorothy set off to follow the Yellow Brick Road and on her way met some wonderful friends. First, she met the Scarecrow, who wanted a brain, then the Tinman, who wanted a heart, and finally the Lion, who was in need of some courage.

Dorothy decided that she would take them all with her so that they could get help from the Wizard too! But the Wicked Witch of the West was not far behind them. She attracted Dorothy and her new friends into a field of pretty poppies, but little did they know that the beautiful flowers were poisoned and they soon started to fall asleep. Luckily, the Tinman called out to Glinda for help and she cast a spell to make it snow over the poppies which woke everyone up. After waking up from the wicked witch’s poppy spell, Dorothy and her friends continued on towards the Emerald City.

4 THE STORY OF THE WIZARD OF OZ CONT.

Upon reaching the palace in Emerald City, a mean guard told them that no one could see the great Wizard of Oz. This made Dorothy cry as she remembered Aunt Em back in Kansas. To stop her crying the guard let them in. Inside the Emerald City they met the Wizard, who told them they must fetch him the Wicked Witch of the West’s broom. So, Dorothy and her friends set out into the woods to find the witch’s castle and somehow get the broom. When they reached the castle they were attacked by the witch’s slaves called Winkies. The Winkies captured Dorothy and her dog Toto and took them to the castle leaving the three friends in the woods.

To get Dorothy back, the three friends came up with a plan; they stole some of the Winkies’ uniforms and crept into the castle. Meanwhile, to try and convince Dorothy to give her the Ruby Slippers the Wicked Witch of the West cast a spell upon a glass sand timer and told Dorothy that if the time ran out she would be dead. Just as the sand was about to run out, Scarecrow, Tinman and Lion burst into the room and saved Dorothy!

To stop the friends and Dorothy from escaping, the witch cast a spell on Scarecrow that set him on fire, so Dorothy threw water over him and accidentally hit the witch. This caused the Wicked Witch of the West to melt to her death. After the witch melted, the Winkies asked Dorothy to be their queen. Dorothy told them that she would rather have the witch’s broom, and then she and her friends set off back to the Emerald City.

The Wizard granted them the gifts they had all asked for. He gave a degree to Scarecrow to prove he had a brain, a heart-shaped watch to the Tinman (but told him that it is more important to be loved by others) and he gave Lion a medal to reward him for his courage. When it was Dorothy’s turn he said he would take her home in a hot air balloon but Toto ran away just as the balloon took off. Dorothy ran after him and the Wizard left without her.

Just when Dorothy thought she could never go home, appeared and told her that she had always had the power to go home, she just didn’t know it. She tells Dorothy to click her heels three times and say “there’s no place like home”. Soon enough Dorothy was home safe and sound and it seemed like the Wizard, Scarecrow, Tinman, Lion, witches, Munchkins and Winkies had all been just a dream!

15 CLASS DRAMA ACTIVITY (To be led by a teacher)

STATUE CIRCLE Ask your class to stand in a circle.

Describe to the group that you are going to pretend to be still and silent statues as individuals. Have a practice at all being individual statues that represent the emotion of ‘happiness’.

Ask the class to turn round and face the outside of the circle.

Tell them that you are going to call out a word and count to three. After three everyone is going to jump round and face the circle and make a statue that they think represents the word you call out.

Some emotions to try could be:

HAPPINESS

SADNESS

EXCITEMENT

NERVOUSNESS

LOVE

COURAGE

CLEVERNESS

You could even try some characters from The Wizard of Oz:

SCARECROW

TINMAN

LION

DOROTHY

AUNT EM

THE WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST

After each statue ask the group to have a look at each other and note any interesting similarities and differences.
