a LINX adaptation

BLUE CAST

LINX 141 LINDEN ST. WELLESLEY, MA 01746 (781) 235-3210 [email protected] PROLOGUE [ALL] GLINDA GREETS THE AUDIENCE

CHARACTERS: GLINDA

[CURTAIN OPENS. Behind the curtain is GLINDA. She looks at the audience with wonder.]

GLINDA_PP What a wonderful audience. So many excited and eager faces. Are we all ready for an adventure? Watch one another’s backs now. Things do sneak up on you in Oz. Fortunately, they can be very nice things... (points to back of house) Like that...

1ST SONG: FIREWORK: ALL PERFORMERS

ACT I, SCENE 1 [PP] IN WHICH IS CALLED BEFORE THE WIZARD.

CHARACTERS: WIZARD, , LION, , DOROTHY

[Head of Wizard hovers before audience. Below, Dorothy, Scarecrow, Lion and Tin Man tremble in terror. Mid-runner curtain is closed behind them. Also onstage is a booth with a hanging curtain. Thick ducts branch out from the booth.]

WIZARD I am the great and powerful OZ! Who dares approach me?

[Scarecrow, Lion and Tin Man shove Dorothy forward. Dorothy looks back at them.]

SCARECROW_PP You got this.

LION_PP We’re right behind you.

[Dorothy turns toward Wizard. Scarecrow, Lion and Tin Man shuffle backwards. Dorothy turns to them, noticing the increased distance.] 2.

TIN MAN_PP Right behind you!

WIZARD (to Dorothy) Who are you?

DOROTHY_PP My name is Dorothy. .

WIZARD And where do you come from, “Dorothy Gale”?

DOROTHY_PP .

WIZARD Kansas? (long pause) What is Kansas?

DOROTHY_PP It’s a place. My home - and I so want to return. A tornado picked up my home, picked up me and my little dog - only, he’s not so little anymore. When the house fell - oh! - the most terrible thing happened...

[We hear the sounds of a tornado, a foundation being torn up, a dog yapping as the lights go down. Audience is left in the dark as the sounds play.]

ACT I, SCENE 2 [SL] IN WHICH THE DETERMINE IF DOROTHY IS A GOOD WITCH OR A BAD WITCH

CHARACTERS: , DOROTHY, , FERÍA, GLINDA, COCO, HONEY, DIP, POWDER, CINNAMON, PUMPKIN, JELLY

[Mid-runner opens. Lights slowly return, revealing a house that has crashed down in the middle of Munchkinland. Beneath the house are two legs wearing striped tights and ruby shoes.

Door falls off hinge to reveal DOROTHY. She steps out and looks around.] 3.

DOROTHY_SL Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.

[Enter Toto through doorway. He is also full of wonder. Dorothy has not looked at him yet.]

TOTO_SL You ain’t just whistlin’ Dixie.

DOROTHY_SL (spins around, surprised) Toto! You can talk! And you’re huge!

TOTO_SL Whoa! Look at me! And you understand me!

DOROTHY_SL And you understand me!

TOTO_SL Well, I could always understand you. Isn’t that funny? Animals understand people, but people don’t understand animals. It just goes to show, you people aren’t as highly evolved as you think you are. In fact, now that you understand me, there’s a few things I’ve been wanting to point out...

DOROTHY_SL (as Toto speaks) Toto... Toto... (cutting him off) Toto! Now’s not the time.

[While Toto talking - and Dorothy was trying to get his attention - the Munchkins had been emerging from various spots.]

COCO Are you a good witch?

HONEY Or are you a bad witch?

CINNAMON She’s awfully pretty, Pumpkin

PUMPKIN Yes, Cinnamon. I bet she’s a good witch. 4.

DIP I don’t think she’s any kind of witch.

POWDER She has to be some kind of witch, Dip.

JELLY Powder’s right. Only a witch can kill a witch.

COCO Which brings us back to our first question:

HONEY Are you a good witch?

CINNAMON Or a bad witch?

DOROTHY_SL But I haven’t killed any witch.

PUMPKIN You sure did.

DIP You dropped a house on her head.

POWDER You can see her legs right there.

DOROTHY_SL Oh, dear! How terrible!

JELLY Terrible? Coco! She’s a bad witch!

DOROTHY_SL No!

COCO Then you’re a good witch?

[Enter Glinda and Fería. All the Munchkins murmur in awe.] 5.

GLINDA_SL Hello, dear friends. I believe we can clarify this matter.

[Munchkins all step aside. Glinda glides up to Dorothy. Pause.]

GLINDA_SL Are you a good witch or a bad witch?

FERÍA_SL That helped a lot, Glinda. Thank you.

[Toto marches in front of Dorothy.]

TOTO_SL Listen! She’s not any kind of witch. Witches are old and ugly and gross.

GLINDA_SL I’m a witch.

TOTO_SL (beat) Sometimes it’s nice not being understood. (ducks behind Dorothy)

FERÍA_SL I’m Fería, the . She is Glinda. Good Witch of the South. (pointing to legs) That was the Bad Witch of the East.

GLINDA_SL Now then... are you a good witch or a bad witch?

DOROTHY_SL ...Good?

[All the Munchkins cheer.]

MUNCHKINS She’s a good witch! She killed the bad witch! (sing) Ding-dong the witch is dead! Which ol’ witch? The Witch! Ding-dong the wicked witch is dead! 6.

[Lightning and thunder rip across stage. The Munchkins scatter.]

TOTO_SL What was that?

HONEY It’s the Wicked Witch! She’s coming.

TOTO_SL I thought Dorothy killed the Wicked Witch.

DIP She killed the Witch of the East!

CINNAMON That’s the !

POWDER You’d better hurry and get out of here.

JELLY Here. Take these shoes!

PUMPKIN The . Jelly, you’re a genius.

COCO (to Dorothy) My friend, don’t take those shoes off.

HONEY They have incredible magic!

DIP The shoes will prospect you, Dorothy.

POWDER You mean ‘protect’, Dip.

[Dip nods happily. Another strike of lightning and thunder makes all cower.]

DOROTHY_SL But where should I go? How can I get home? 7.

FERÍA_SL You’ll have to seek the Wizard.

JELLY Oh! The Wizard! He’s wonderful!

CINNAMON Yes! He’ll know what to do!

TOTO_SL But how do we get there?

GLINDA_SL You must follow the . (points over audience) See it there?

DOROTHY_SL It stretches ever so far. Could someone keep us company?

PUMPKIN You mean... leave Munchkinland?

FERÍA_SL Excellent idea. (to the Munchkins) Dorothy needs someone to guide her. Any that wishes to volunteer, please step forward.

[All Munchkins, except Boq, step back.]

GLINDA_SL Boq! That’s very kind of you.

BOQ_SL What? (realizes what happened) Listen, I’d love to help her. Really! But there’s a problem.

GLINDA_SL Which is?

BOQ_SL I don’t want to. 8.

GLINDA_SL But you are perfect, Boq. You’ve been to the .

BOQ_SL Only once — by accident. (eyeing another Munchkin) Someone thought it would be funny to tie me to a Wandering Chicken.

[Toto opens mouth to ask “How” a chicken could pull him all the way to a distant city.]

BOQ_SL (holding up finger to Toto) Don’t ask.

[Toto closes mouth.]

FERÍA_SL Boq, you will lead Dorothy to the Emerald City - or I will turn you into a chicken.

BOQ_SL (eyes grow wide then, to Dorothy, pleasant but nervous) When do we leave?

COCO Don’t worry, Boq. It’s not that dangerous.

DIP Oh, sure it is, Coco. The witch’s servants are everywhere.

CINNAMON And they are terribly mean.

HONEY What Coco was trying to say, you two, was that Boq will make it through okay.

POWDER Right. He’s not going to get gobbled up.

PUMPKIN Or trampled on.

JELLY Or torn into little pieces. 9.

BOQ_SL You can all stop comforting me now. Thank you.

GLINDA_SL Off you go!

MUNCHKINS Follow the yellow brick road! Ha-ha! Follow the yellow brick road! Hee-hee! Follow, follow, follow, follow, Follow the yellow brick road! Oh!

If ever, oh, ever a wiz there was The is one because Because, because, because, because, because! Because of the wonderful things he does.

La-la-la la-la-la-la... LA!

You’re , The Wonderful Wizard of Oz!

ACT I, SCENE 3 [PP] IN WHICH TOTO AND BOQ STEP BEFORE THE WIZARD.

CHARACTERS: WIZARD, SCARECROW, TIN MAN, LION, TOTO BOQ, DOROTHY

[Scene continues with Dorothy before the face of the Wizard. Lion, Scarecrow and Tin Man are still behind her. Toto and Boq are now also seen in the shadows.]

WIZARD And now you see me. Come forward, dog. You too, Munchkin. Why do you hide?

TOTO_PP I... I wasn’t hiding.

BOQ_PP I was. And he left a puddle in the corner.

TOTO_PP What?! I didn’t! 10.

BOQ_PP You most certainly did.

TOTO_PP (through clenched teeth) The big talking head startled me.

WIZARD Silence! So, Dorothy Gale, you came here without meeting the witch?

DOROTHY_PP Oh, but I did meet the witch. She caught me on the road.

WIZARD Were you not scared?

BOQ_PP Scared? The dog’s lucky it’s the yellow brick road.

TOTO_PP (clenched teeth again) Would you stop?!

WIZARD What did she say to you?

ACT I, SCENE 4 [CS] IN WHICH DOROTHY FIRST FACES THE WITCH

CHARACTERS: TOTO, DOROTHY, BOQ, SCARECROW, WICKED WITCH, TIP, GLINDA

[Dorothy walks along the road with Toto and Boq. A SCARECROW rests on a wooden post near an immense tree (the booth turned around). One arm is pointing at the audience.]

TOTO_CS The road splits.

DOROTHY_CS Excuse me, Boq. Which way should we go?

BOQ_CS I was being dragged behind a chicken. You might as well ask that scarecrow. 11.

SCARECROW_CS That way seems nice.

TOTO_CS Did that Scarecrow talk?

DOROTHY_CS Don’t be silly. don’t talk.

SCARECROW_CS They don’t? I’m sorry.

DOROTHY_CS Oh! You do talk! Do you know the way to the Emerald City?

[Scarecrow nods.]

TOTO_CS Can you tell us?

[Scarecrow shakes head.]

DOROTHY_CS Why not?

SCARECROW_CS (whispers) Scarecrows don’t talk.

TOTO_CS Well, clearly, you do.

SCARECROW_CS I do? Are you sure?

BOQ_CS Is there a brain in that straw head of yours?

SCARECROW_CS I don’t think so.

BOQ_CS Well, be sure to get one. 12.

SCARECROW_CS (coming away from post) How would I get one?

DOROTHY_CS Maybe the Wizard can give you one.

SCARECROW_CS Really! What’s he giving you?

SHOWCASE VOICE: HOME

[Thunder booms at end of song. As the characters cringe, the Wicked Witch steps out from the trunk of the tree. Dorothy, Scarecrow, Toto and Boq back away from her.]

WICKED WITCH_CS Going somewhere?

TOTO_CS If it’s all the same to you, we’d like to run for our lives.

[Toto starts to run. Wicked Witch waves her hand and Toto trips.]

WICKED WITCH_CS Which of you killed my sister? (to Dorothy) Was it you?

DOROTHY_CS (pleading) No.

BOQ_CS Don’t be modest. Yeah, she killed her! She’s more powerful than Glinda and more powerful than you! Show her, Dorothy. (pause) Any time now... Right NOW.

[Dorothy does nothing. Witch grabs Boq by throat.] 13.

WICKED WITCH_CS I would advise you to keep silent, Munchkin.

BOQ_CS (raspy) Good advice.

[Witch releases Boq.]

DOROTHY_CS It was an accident.

WICKED WITCH_CS (mocking) Oh! It was an accident! (vicious) I can make accidents too!

SCARECROW_CS Can I? (pushes Toto to ground, just as he’s been getting up)

TOTO_CS Hey!

SCARECROW_CS It was an accident.

TOTO_CS No it wasn’t!

SCARECROW_CS Oh, I can’t do anything right.

WICKED WITCH_CS Give me my sister’s ruby slippers.

[Dorothy, scared, reaches for them.]

TOTO_CS Dorothy, no! Remember what Glinda said. They’ll protect you.

WICKED WITCH_CS And what’s going to protect you, fuzz ball? 14.

TOTO_CS (whispers) Dorothy, give me one of the shoes.

WICKED WITCH_CS Two shoes. Four friends. Some of you are going to—OW!

[The Witch bounces her head, as if struck from behind. She spins around, rubbing the back of her head. Enter TIP, swinging a sling. Wicked Witch stumbles back.]

WICKED WITCH_CS You! You’ve been quite a nuisance to my monkeys.

TIP_CS I knock them out of the sky for breakfast.

TOTO_CS Not sure there’s any nutritional value in that.

WICKED WITCH_CS Let’s see if a second dose of the Terrible stops you!

[She raises her arms for a spell. Dorothy, Toto, Scarecrow and Boq cringe, though Tip shows no signs of fear.]

DOROTHY_CS Stop! Or—

WICKED WITCH_CS Or what?

TOTO_CS (thinking fast) Or she will use her magic on you. She dropped a house on your sister, she can drop one on you.

WICKED WITCH_CS (looks to sky, afraid, then slowly looks back) This isn’t over, my pretty. I’ll get you — you and your not so little dog too!

[Thunder and lightning. Witch exits into the tree. Enter Glinda.] 15.

GLINDA_CS Well played, friends.

BOQ_CS You were watching? Why didn’t you help?

GLINDA_CS Don’t worry. Dorothy was perfectly safe.

TOTO_CS No one cares about the dog.

BOQ_CS Or the Munchkin.

SCARECROW_CS I see two people who need a hug! (hugs them)

GLINDA_CS (to Tip) And what is your name, my dear?

TIP_CS Tip! I think. Or... it has been... for as long as I can remember.

GLINDA_CS And how far back do you remember?

TIP_CS (thinks) I don’t remember.

GLINDA_CS You look quite familiar. Have we met?

TIP_CS We have.

GLINDA_CS When?

TIP_CS About a minute ago. (beat) I live in the Western Wilds. I try to foil the West Witch when I can. 16.

GLINDA_CS What brings you so close to Munchkinland? You couldn’t have known the West Witch was coming... could you?

TIP_CS (thinks, shrugs) Something in my heart told me to come.

GLINDA_CS It is a good heart then. Would you travel with my young friend here? Keep her safe?

TIP_CS If she stands against the witch, I’ll stand with her.

[Dorothy nods.]

SCARECROW_CS Look at us! A family! I’ll be the happy daddy. Dorothy, you can be the mommy. (to Toto) You’re the dog, of course.

BOQ_CS I don’t want any part of this.

SCARECROW_CS You can be the teenager.

TOTO_CS (chuckling) Let’s keep going.

[ Dorothy, Toto, Boq, Scarecrow and Tip with Glinda waving good-bye. She is near the tree. Suddenly, the Witch reappears.]

WICKED WITCH_CS Hello, Glinda.

[She pulls her through the tree.] 17.

ACT I, SCENE 5 [PP] IN WHICH THE WICKED WITCH WORRIES OVER DOROTHY’S UNEXPECTED ARRIVAL.

CHARACTERS: WICKED WITCH, GLINDA

[The Wicked Witch paces about her throne room. In a cage stands the lovely Glinda.]

WICKED WITCH_PP Who is she, Glinda? Where did she come from?

GLINDA_PP (pleasantly) I don’t know.

WICKED WITCH_PP (to herself) Why now? Why? When I am about to strike at the Emerald City?

GLINDA_PP Because good always sends help in the face of evil.

WICKED WITCH_PP It was a rhetorical question.

GLINDA_PP (pleasantly) I don’t know what that means.

WICKED WITCH_PP Why am I not surprised?

GLINDA_PP I have tried to explain things to you.

WICKED WITCH_PP Yes. You’re so wise.

GLINDA_PP Good is a force within the world.

WICKED WITCH_PP Then so is bad! 18.

GLINDA_PP So it is.

WICKED WITCH_PP So it is.

GLINDA_PP But Good is stronger. Powers you do not understand have sent this girl.

WICKED WITCH_PP I will send my flying monkeys to snatch her up.

GLINDA_PP It will do no good. will protect her.

WICKED WITCH_PP Princess Ozma is gone!

GLINDA_PP Her spirit lives on.

WICKED WITCH_PP Why am I wasting my breath? Whatever I say you will simply smile in your simple-minded way.

GLINDA_PP It is simple to smile when one has faith in the goodness of the world.

WICKED WITCH_PP Don’t make me throw up. The Flying Monkeys will bring Dorothy to me! Then we will see her strength.

ACT I, SCENE 6 [SL] IN WHICH THE FLYING MONKEYS DISCUSS THE WITCHES

CHARACTERS: FLASH, STRIKE, BOUNCE, BOOM, RUMBLE, DASH

[Flash and Strike stand before Bounce, Boom, Rumble and Dash.]

BOUNCE I can’t believe it!

BOOM This is so sudden!

RUMBLE She was always so lovely and kind.

DASH Poor, poor Glinda.

FLASH Glinda? What are you talking about?

STRIKE The is dead!

BOUNCE (excited) She is?!

BOUNCE, BOOM, RUMBLE & DASH Ding-dong, the witch is dead! Which ol’ which? The Wicked Witch—

FLASH Stop it! Stop it!

STRIKE How dare you call her Wicked?

BOOM Because... she was?

FLASH Not to us. To us she’s the good witch.

RUMBLE Which witch?

STRIKE The East Witch. 20.

DASH (memorizing) The East Witch is the good witch.

BOUNCE Which witch is the bad witch?

FLASH The good witch.

BOOM The East Witch?

STRIKE Glinda witch!

RUMBLE Thought she was the bad witch.

FLASH She is the bad witch.

STRIKE Now, the Western Witch—

DASH She is a wicked witch!

FLASH She is a great witch.

BOUNCE Which?

STRIKE That’s what she said. Witch.

BOUNCE Huh?

FLASH The Wicked Witch— (Boom raises hand to ask question) —of the West (Boom lowers hand) needs us to find Dorothy. 21.

RUMBLE Is she a witch?

STRIKE We believe so.

DASH (like Glinda) Is she a good witch or a bad witch?

FLASH Bad.

[Bounce, Boom, Rumble and Dash cheer.]

FLASH I mean ‘good’.

[They cheer weakly and with a question mark.]

STRIKE We need to snag her.

[They snicker.]

FLASH Not snicker! Snag her!

STRIKE You! Grab her!

[Boom grabs Bounce.]

BOOM Got her!

FLASH Not her! Dorothy!

[Boom looks to Rumble.]

BOOM Are you Dorothy?

STRIKE Dorothy the witch! 22.

DASH (pointing to Rumble) She’s not a witch.

FLASH Fly!

BOUNCE, BOOM, RUMBLE & DASH Where?

[They start swatting the air.]

RUMBLE Duck!

BOUNCE Ducks?

BOUNCE, BOOM, RUMBLE & DASH AHHHH!!!!

BOOM Our mortal enemy!

RUMBLE Retreat! Retreat!

[Strike and Flash shake their heads in disgust.]

ACT I, SCENE 7 [PP] IN WHICH THE WIZARD IS REVEALED

CHARACTERS: DOROTHY, SCARECROW, TIN MAN, LION, TOTO, BOQ, TIP, WIZARD

DOROTHY_PP So, you see, if it weren’t for Tip, the witch and her monkey would have surely captured us.

SCARECROW_PP Or worse!

TIN MAN_PP They could have killed us! 23.

LION_PP Or worse!

[The others look at Lion.]

WIZARD Warrior, step forward.

[Tip emerges from the shadows, looks around.]

TIP_PP This seems... wrong.

BOQ_PP The Wonderful Wizard of Oz turns out to be a cranky floating head. Of course it seems wrong.

TIP_PP But I know it’s wrong. As if I’ve been here.

SCARECROW_PP Have you been here?

TIP_PP Have I?

LION_PP (whispering) I’ve learned not to talk to her when she’s like that.

WIZARD Silence!

[Toto, who was listening to Tip’s idea that ‘this is wrong’ starts sniffing around, getting closer and closer to the curtained booth.]

WIZARD Why have you come?!

DOROTHY_PP I would like help getting home.

TIN MAN_PP I would like a heart. 24.

LION_PP I would— (chickens out) You go first.

SCARECROW_PP I would like a train. I mean ‘a brain’. (thinks) A train would be nice too... if you have one.

LION_PP I would like courage.

BOQ_PP And I would like to have nothing more to do with these people.

WIZARD Silence! If you wish to receive even 1 of these things—

[Toto’s enormous head appears behind the Wizard’s, looking around curiously. Wizard grows wide eyed.]

WIZARD (to those watching) One moment. (grabbing Toto’s head and pushing) Excuse me!

[Toto - whose head has been in the curtain, comes stumbling out. He looks at the others curiously.]

WIZARD Pay no attention to the curtain. It’s forbidden to look behind it!

[Toto runs at curtain and jumps through. Suddenly the Head of the Wizard vanishes as Toto tackles him. There is a pause and suddenly Toto’s giant head appears before them all. He looks around.]

TOTO_PP Ha-ha! Look at me! I am the Great and Powerful Oz!

TIN MAN_PP Toto, what in the world is going on? 25.

TIP_PP (understanding) It’s a fake.

SCARECROW_PP A fake? Then where’s the Wizard?

TOTO_PP Let’s ask this guy.

[Toto’s head vanishes and he drags The Wizard out from behind the curtain. Lion grabs Wizard by collar.]

LION_PP Why were you trying to scare us? It’s not nice to scare people.

TIP_PP I think he’s the one who’s really scared. (leaning in to Wizard) It’s a technique of bullies.

WIZARD (looking sidelong at Tip, as if she is familiar) But I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m stuck here!

TIN MAN_PP Stuck?

WIZARD You wouldn’t understand.

TIN MAN_PP Oh, I can tell you a story about being stuck.

ACT I, SCENE 8 [CS] IN WHICH DOROTHY, TOTO, BOQ, TIP, AND SCARECROW MEET TIN MAN AND LION.

CHARACTERS: DOROTHY, TOTO, BOQ, TIP, SCARECROW, TIN MAN, LION

[The group moves cautiously through the forest. It is full of strange noises, creatures. 26.

They have not yet noticed Tin Man, frozen and half covered in ivy.]

BOQ_CS This forest is much darker than I remember.

DOROTHY_CS Are there any dangerous animals in here?

TIN MAN_CS (quietly) Yessss.

SCARECROW_CS Did any of you say that?

[The others shake their heads and, as a result, their bodies start to shake in fear.]

SCARECROW_CS I was afraid of that. (looks around, spots Tin Man, approaches) Did you say it?

TIN MAN_CS Yesssss.

[Scarecrow jumps and runs to others. Dorothy, however, steps forward. She knocks on the Tin Man.]

DOROTHY_CS It’s a man. A tin man!

[She starts to remove ivy. The others help her. When the ivy is cleared away, they stand back, but he does not move.]

TIN MAN_CS Oil... (sounds like I’ll)

SCARECROW_CS (scratching head) You’ll what? 27.

TIN MAN_CS OIL...

TOTO_CS Oil! Oh, look! (grabs nearby oiling can)

BOQ_CS Are you sure that’s a good idea? He has an axe.

[Toto and the others start to pass can and oil him up. Slowly he moves easier and easier, growing happier and happier.]

DOROTHY_CS There! You’re perfect!

[Tin Man hangs head.]

SCARECROW_CS Is he broken?

TIN MAN_CS (raises head) I am. Listen. (bangs chest)

[The others tilt their heads and shrug.]

TIN MAN_CS (explaining) No heart.

DOROTHY_CS How sad!

SCARECROW_CS (thinks hard) Oh! You can come with us to see the Wizard! He’s going to give me a brain. He can give you a heart!

TIN MAN_CS Sure! If we can get out of these woods. Since I rusted there, I’ve seen many large animals enter this forest. 28.

TOTO_CS H-hungry animals?

TIN MAN_CS Very hungry.

BOQ_CS And here I am a Munchkin. (grabs Tip) I’m named after a snack.

TIP_CS Calm down.

BOQ_CS Why should I?

TIP_CS Because if you don’t, I’ll feed you to whatever’s out there. (to Tin Man) What is out there, friend?

TIN MAN_CS Mostly lions, tigers and bears.

DOROTHY_CS Lions?

SCARECROW_CS Tigers?

TIN MAN_CS (nodding) And bears.

DOROTHY_CS Oh, my!

[The trees begin to rustle.]

TIP_CS Something’s coming. Stand at the ready.

[Tip glances back. All her friends have run and hid at the furthest edges of the stage. 29.

Tip, rolling eyes, prepares to meet what is coming. The rustling gets closer and closer and then—

[Lion charges in, knocking Tip down and dazing her. It seems clear that Lion did NOT intend for that to happen.]

LION_CS Put ‘em up! Put ‘em up! I’ll take you all on! I’ll take you with one hand behind my back! I’ll take you with both hands behind my back. C’mon. C’mon.

[Toto starts barking at Lion. Lion barks back. Dorothy rushes forward and gives Lion a whack.]

DOROTHY_CS Stop it! You’re scaring him.

LION_CS (starts crying) What did you do that for? He was scaring me first. Am I bleeding?

TIN MAN_CS I don’t think so.

TIP_CS So much for there being ‘terrible’ beasts in these woods.

LION_CS Oh, but there are terrible beasts! Lions, tigers and bears! Oh, my.

SCARECROW_CS Aren’t you a lion?

LION_CS Isn’t it terrible? I scare myself every time I get a drink in the river. I just see my reflection and AHHH-hh! (sniffles) But the others! Without the magic of Princess Ozma, they’re forgetting.

DOROTHY_CS I think you mean The Wizard.

LION_CS The Wizard is all there is now. Do you think he can give me some courage? 30.

TIN MAN_CS Probably. He’s going to give me a heart.

SCARECROW_CS And me a train. I mean ‘a brain’. A train would be nice though... if he has it.

DOROTHY_CS You’re welcome to come along.

TOTO_CS We should hurry, Dorothy. The Western Witch could appear again anywhere.

DOROTHY_CS Come, everyone. Off to see the wizard.

[The group exits.]

ACT I, SCENE 9 [SL] IN WHICH FIELD MICE ARE TOLD TO PREPARE FOR BATTLE.

CHARACTERS: PORTHOS, ARAMIS, MILADY, ATHOS

[Milady, Porthos and Aramis are onstage, lounging. Porthos and Aramis are trying to throw bits of food into one another’s mouths. The ground is littered with food. Aramis throws yet another piece too far.]

PORTHOS You’re lucky you’re not an archer.

ARAMIS Wait. Let me try again.

MILADY Maybe someone should clean up the floor.

PORTHOS That’s what ants are for.

[Enter Athos, striding.]

ATHOS All rise! Word has come from the Queen that— 31.

[Athos crashes to the ground, slipping on the food on the floor. Milady tries to help him up and also crashes to the ground.]

MILADY (to Aramis and Porthos) This is your fault! Come help!

[Aramis and Porthos race over, slip and crash into them.]

MILADY Off! Off! Get off!

[Aramis and Porthos stand and salute. Milady and Athos rise, cleaning their outfits.]

MILADY You had news?

ATHOS (still upset) Yes. Fería, Good Witch of the North, has called us to be ready.

MILADY Ready for...?

ATHOS Battle.

ARAMIS & PORTHOS Yes!

[They high-five, then crash to the ground.]

ATHOS Why is this place such a mess?

MILADY (pointing to Aramis and Porthos) Ask them.

ARAMIS We were practicing, Captain Athos. 32.

MILADY What could you possible have been practicing?

PORTHOS ...Archery?

ATHOS You will make this room spotless - then you will assemble the troops.

MILADY Is this because of the new witch? This... Dorothy?

ARAMIS I heard she destroyed the Witch of the East.

ATHOS She did.

ARAMIS & PORTHOS Yes!

[They high-five, then crash to the ground.]

ATHOS (rolling eyes) We hope she will move against the West Witch next.

ARAMIS & PORTHOS Our swords are ready.

[They try to rise and pull swords and crash to the ground.]

MILADY My sword is ready.

ATHOS Well done. You are hereby promoted to First Lieutenant.

MILADY Thank you, Captain Athos.

[Athos and Milady exit with heads held high.]

ARAMIS Wait! That’s not fair! 33.

PORTHOS We’re older!

[They try to chase after them, but crash to the ground.]

ACT I, SCENE 10 [PP] IN WHICH GLINDA ESCAPES FROM THE WICKED WITCH’S PRISON.

CHARACTERS: GLINDA, WICKED WITCH

[Enter Wicked Witch. Glinda stands in the cage.]

WICKED WITCH_PP Curse them! Curse them down to their little fleas!

GLINDA_PP What seems to be the problem, dear?

WICKED WITCH_PP Oh, it’s those flying monkeys.

GLINDA_PP Things not going as planned?

WICKED WITCH_PP You can certainly say so. I found most of them running around like lunatics screaming about flies and ducks!

GLINDA_PP It must be difficult to deal with such incompetence.

WICKED WITCH_PP It is not easy.

GLINDA_PP You must wish you had friends who helped you out of a sense of love rather than minions who help you out of fear.

WICKED WITCH_PP It would be nice to have a look of adoration or even just a little— HEY! I’ll have no mushy mushy fest. Don’t try to be my friend. 34.

GLINDA_PP But you have to deal with so many disappointments. The loss of your sister, a new witch who is good, incompetent monkeys, how I managed to open my cage, this castle is drafty, your outfit has no style—

WICKED WITCH_PP Wait. What did you say?

GLINDA_PP Your outfit. It’s rather drab.

WICKED WITCH_PP No, no. About your cage.

GLINDA_PP Oh, yes. I escaped.

WICKED WITCH_PP (pause) You don’t look like you escaped.

GLINDA_PP But I did.

WICKED WITCH_PP No you didn’t.

GLINDA_PP I unlocked the door.

WICKED WITCH_PP Open it then.

GLINDA_PP I don’t want you to feel bad.

WICKED WITCH_PP I don’t feel bad because it’s not open.

GLINDA_PP You enchanted it very well.

WICKED WITCH_PP I know. 35.

GLINDA_PP It took me a good minute or two to undo.

WICKED WITCH_PP It’s not open!

GLINDA_PP Then come here and prove it.

WICKED WITCH_PP No. You’ll hit me with your wand or something.

GLINDA_PP My wand by itself would do little against you - and if the door is locked, your enchantment remains and I can do nothing against you.

[Wicked Witch marches up to cage and glares at Glinda. She places a hand on the door. As she pulls to check the lock, Glinda shoves the door - which is unlocked - open striking the Wicked Witch with it. The Wicked Witch falls unconscious to the floor.]

GLINDA_PP Good witches don’t lie.

[We hear monkeys approaching. Glinda sneaks away.]

END ACT I 36.

ACT II, SCENE 1 [PP] IN WHICH TIP RESOLVES TO RESCUE PRINCESS OZMA

CHARACTERS: DOROTHY, WIZARD, TOTO, BOQ, TIP, TIN MAN, SCARECROW, LION, GLINDA

[Dorothy stands over the Wizard. Toto, Boq, Tip, Tin Man, Scarecrow and Lion are all there.]

LION_PP So... what you’re saying is... you can’t give me courage?

[Wizard shakes head.]

TIN MAN_PP Nor me a heart?

[Wizard shakes head.]

SCARECROW_PP Nor me a brain?

[Wizard shakes head.]

SCARECROW_PP (thinks) Not even a train?

[Wizard shakes head.]

TOTO_PP I suppose there’s no way to get Dorothy and I home.

WIZARD Not with me.

[All hang their heads.]

SCARECROW_PP Wait... are you suggesting there is someone who can get her home? 37.

WIZARD There was. Princess Ozma.

TIP_PP And who is Princess Ozma?

WIZARD Princess Ozma is the rightful ruler of OZ. This whole land is named after her!

DOROTHY_PP Why, I thought it was named after you.

WIZARD No. When Ozma took me in she called me ‘The Wizard of OZ’ because of my clever inventions.

TOTO_PP Inventions? Like what?

WIZARD Well, my good dog, you discovered my grandest: projecting my voice and image from that little booth.

DOROTHY_PP But you’re not a real wizard?

WIZARD My name is Lyman Baum from Nebraska.

DOROTHY_PP Nebraska?!

BOQ_PP (in disbelief) Nebraska!! (pause) What’s Nebraska?

TOTO_PP It’s a place near Kansas.

WIZARD I was blown here in an air balloon. This is Ozma’s throne room!

SCARECROW_PP Well, what happened to her? 38.

TIP_PP (mysteriously) She was defeated - by the Wicked Witch.

WIZARD Destroyed, yes.

BOQ_PP How did you know?

TIP_PP (shrugs, confused) Someone must have told me - at some time.

[Enter GLINDA.]

GLINDA_PP The West Witch was quickly becoming the most powerful witch in OZ. Ozma faced her - alone.

DOROTHY_PP Glinda! Oh, Glinda, thank goodness!

GLINDA_PP Hello, Dorothy. (to them all) Ozma was very noble. She did not wish to risk anyone else’s safety. She walked straight into the West Witch’s castle—

LION_PP And? And? AND???

GLINDA_PP And no one ever saw her again.

[Lion starts to bawl.]

TOTO_PP But how do you know she was destroyed?

GLINDA_PP The Wicked Witch told us.

SCARECROW_PP It seems to me - she could still be inside. 39.

GLINDA_PP But the Wicked Witch told us she was destroyed.

DOROTHY_PP Wouldn’t a bad witch lie about it?

GLINDA_PP I suppose. But I did not see Ozma when I was there.

BOQ_PP You were there?!

GLINDA_PP Yes. And the Wicked Witch is quite close to launching her attack against the Emerald City.

WIZARD (jumping up) To arms! Summon the Sparkly Soldiers! Find the Fuzzy Fighters! Call the Cutie- Pie Captains!

BOQ_PP We’re doomed.

TOTO_PP Why don’t you have a better army?

GLINDA_PP Ozma hated violence. She often said you would have to erase her entire memory to make her pick up a sword.

TIP_PP (drawing sword) Well, luckily, we don’t all follow that idea.

LION_PP (to Tip) Are you going to face the Wicked Witch? All by yourself?

TIP_PP No. I’m going to have you with me, Lion.

LION_PP (to others) All by herself. She’s very brave. 40.

TIN MAN_PP Can you use my axe?

[Tip nods.]

SCARECROW_PP What exactly are you planning on doing?

TIP_PP If Ozma was peaceful and ruled the entire land while two wicked witches lurked in the East and West, then she must be pretty powerful; even if she doesn’t like to use that power.

WIZARD True, true! She wouldn’t have gone against the Wicked Witch if she didn’t believe she COULD stop her.

TIP_PP I say we sneak into the Witch’s castle, find if Ozma’s there and - if she is - free her.

SCARECROW_PP I will go with you.

TOTO_PP I will go with you.

BOQ_PP I will go to Munchkinland.

LION_PP (motioning to Boq) I’m with him.

[Both start to exit. Dorothy cuts them off.]

DOROTHY_PP Oh, but don’t you see? If we don’t do something, things are only going to get darker and scarier. If I must stay here, I don’t wish to live in a land like that. I need my friends to be safe and happy.

TIN MAN_PP Don’t forget, Dorothy. Ozma could return you home too. 41.

DOROTHY_PP (thinks sincerely) Well, yes, I suppose she could.

GLINDA_PP I can show you the way.

WIZARD Lead on, Glinda - and let us all hope Ozma is there.

ACT II, SCENE 2 [CS] IN WHICH THE WICKED WITCH TRIES TO STOP DOROTHY WITH JITTERBUGS.

CHARACTERS: DOROTHY, LION, TOTO, TIN MAN, TIP, SCARECROW, BOQ, GLINDA, WICKED WITCH

[Dorothy enters from S.R. with Lion, Toto, Tin Man, Tip, Scarecrow and Boq. Wicked Witch is S.L., but in her castle, watching the group through a crystal ball.]

WICKED WITCH_CS So... they want to sneak up on me, do they? Fools! Do you not realize how powerful I am? I will be ruler of OZ, but you dare defy me. You wish to dance with the Wicked Witch? Let’s just see your moves.

[She waves her hands and a strange sound begins, first distant, but then drawing closer and closer.]

TOTO_CS (to Boq) Did you just hear what I just heard?

BOQ_CS That noise don’t come from an ordinary bird.

DOROTHY_CS It may be just a cricket or a critter in the trees.

TIN MAN_CS It’s giving me the jitters in the joints around my knees.

DOROTHY I think I see a shadow and it’s fuzzy and it’s furry. 42.

SCARECROW_CS I haven’t got a brain, but I think I ought to worry.

TIN MAN_CS I haven’t got a heart, but I feel a palpitation.

LION_CS As monarch of the forest, I don’t like the situation.

TIP_CS (to Lion) Are you gonna stand around and let them fill us full of horror?

LION_CS I’d like to roar them down... But I think I lost my roarer.

DOROTHY_CS It’s a whosis!

BOQ_CS It’s a whosis?

TIP_CS It’s a whatsits!

SCARECROW_CS It’s a whatsits?

TOTO_CS Who’s that?

DOROTHY_CS Who’s there?

LION_CS Who’s where?

ALL Beware!

SHOWCASE VOICE: JITTERBUG

[As the group contorts and itches from the jitterbugs - and the Witch cackles- in floats Glinda, carrying giant circular pad. 43.

She begins to gracefully whack the group with the pads, raising a cloud of white powder.]

BOQ_CS (sputtering) Stop! Stop! STOP!

TOTO_CS Why would you do that?

GLINDA_CS Are you itching anymore?

LION_CS No.

GLINDA_CS Squirming anymore?

TIN MAN_CS Not at all.

GLINDA_CS Jitterbug powder, developed by my friends, the Field Mice, generations ago.

WICKED WITCH_CS Curse that Glinda! Come, Flying Monkeys! Attack or I’ll blast you all to smithereens!

TIP_CS We must pause no longer. The Wicked Witch knows we’re coming.

LION_CS (giving up) Well, she knows we’re coming. Call off the attack.

GLINDA_CS The time to move against the Wicked Witch is now.

TIN MAN_CS Before all OZ is under her rule.

[The air fills with the sound of monkeys.]

TIP_CS Flying Monkeys! Quick! This way! 44.

[Exit.]

ACT II, SCENE 3 [SL] IN WHICH THE MUNCHKINS RESOLVE TO HELP DOROTHY.

CHARACTERS: COCO, HONEY, DIP, POWDER, CINNAMON, PUMPKIN, JELLY.

[Coco stands before Honey, Dip, Jelly, Powder, Cinnamon and Pumpkin.]

COCO (very serious) Friends, I have called this meeting for two reasons. The first, is to try to sell you this tupperware.

DIP I’ll take it!

COCO (joyous) Congratulations. (they shake hands) (serious again) The second is: we must help Dorothy!

HONEY How can we help her from here in Munchkinland?

JELLY We can’t. We’ll have to leave Munchkinland.

CINNAMON Leave Munchkinland? Are you mad?

PUMPKIN Friend, I know you’re afraid - but think of Boq. He blazed the trail out of Munchkinland.

DIP I tied him to a Wandering Chicken.

POWDER But then he left again - on his own. 45.

HONEY We all stepped back when he wasn’t looking.

JELLY And shall we have all OZ step back when we’re not looking?

HONEY (beat) What?

JELLY No! We shall not!

DIP But Dorothy went to find a way home. We’re already home.

COCO She has found our home threatened. Now, according to Fería, she journeys to fight the Wicked Witch!

CINNAMON So, all we have to do is wait... Right?

HONEY Hopefully she’ll win.

PUMPKIN Ask not what Dorothy can do for you. Ask what you can do for Dorothy.

[Munchkins leap up, declaring they are ready for action.]

POWDER When do we leave?

JELLY This very moment!

COCO CHARGE!

HONEY I’m sorry. Are we charging the whole way?

DIP It’s pretty far. 46.

COCO Well... WALK BRISKLY! Set a good pace!

[Exit.]

ACT II, SCENE 4 [SL] IN WHICH THE FIELD MICE HELP DOROTHY

CHARACTERS: DOROTHY, GLINDA, FERÍA, BOQ, TOTO, PORTHOS, ARAMIS, MILADY, ATHOS, FLASH, STRIKE, BOUNCE, BOOM, RUMBLE, DASH

[Dorothy, Glinda, Fería, Boq, and Toto race in. Dorothy is in tears.]

TOTO_SL There are only five of us left!

GLINDA_SL I’m afraid our attack has gone terribly wrong!

BOQ_SL If it weren’t for Fería, we wouldn’t have escaped.

FERÍA_SL But I could not save Tin Man, Scarecrow, or Lion.

TOTO_SL Carried off like mice.

DOROTHY_SL And even the Wizard. He tried to help and got himself carried away too!

BOQ_SL The witch is not going to go easy on them.

DOROTHY_SL Wait. You said ‘five of us’. Where’s Tip?

TOTO_SL (searching around) I don’t see her! (sniffs) Or smell her. I only smell— phew! 47.

[Enter Flash, Strike, Bounce, Boom, Rumble, Tumble and Dash.]

FLASH Well, well...the question has finally been answered.

STRIKE (mocking) Is she a good witch or a bad witch?

FERÍA_SL Keep your distance!

BOUNCE (ignoring, to Dorothy) You ain’t no kind of witch.

BOOM You’re just a girl!

TOTO_SL In our defense, we have been saying that from the beginning.

RUMBLE And now you can say it at the end.

DASH OZ belongs to the Wicked Witch.

FERÍA_CS OZ is goodness and goodness will protect it.

FLASH Right. Who’s gonna help you now?

[Enter Athos, Milady, Porthos, and Aramis.]

ATHOS The Royal Field Mice of OZ will help her.

MILADY Wherever bullies attack the innocent, we will be there.

ARAMIS Wherever there is injustice, we will be there. 48.

ATHOS Wherever good is threatened... Or evil rears its ugly face...

MILADY & ARAMIS We will be there.

PORTHOS And wherever there is a complimentary buffet serving breakfast, lunch and dinner—

[All stare at Porthos.]

PORTHOS Well. I’ll be there.

MILADY Now back away from the girl you sorry excuse for pigeons.

STRIKE & FLASH Attack!

ARAMIS For Narnia! (beat) I mean: OZMA!

FIELD MICE OZMA!

[The Flying Monkeys and Field Mice battle as Dorothy and the others escape.]

ACT II, SCENE 5 [PP] IN WHICH DOROTHY ACCIDENTALLY STOPS THE WICKED WITCH.

CHARACTERS: TIN MAN, SCARECROW, LION, WIZARD, WICKED WITCH, GLINDA, TOTO, DOROTHY, TIP, BOQ, BLUE CAST ENSEMBLE

[Tin Man, Scarecrow, Lion and Wizard tremble before the Wicked Witch. Scarecrow is in two pieces]

LION_PP This is all a misunderstanding. We were just out for a stroll. 49.

TIN MAN_PP Yes. And, while we appreciate the lift your monkeys gave us, we’d like to get back to the Emerald City.

SCARECROW_PP Do you think they could carry us there?

WIZARD Highly unlikely, my friend.

WICKED WITCH_PP Quit your blabbering!

LION_PP Is that a ‘no’ then?

SCARECROW_PP If it is, could you at least hand me my legs?

[Laughing, Wicked Witch tosses legs at Scarecrow.]

WICKED WITCH_PP Much good it will do you. Soon I’ll destroy your friend and waltz into the Emerald City—Then all OZ will be mine! (evil laugh)

WIZARD I’m afraid the Emerald City is lost. Some caretaker I turned out to be.

TIN MAN_PP I hope Dorothy flees while she still can.

LION_PP She won’t. I may be a coward, but Dorothy is brave.

SCARECROW_PP (to Witch) I believe in her! She’ll put an end to you! She won’t fall into your trap.

WICKED WITCH_PP Dorothy? You think I want Dorothy?! I’ve realized... she’s just a child! I don’t need to destroy her.

LION_PP I’m a bit befuddled. A bit confusled. 50.

TIN MAN_PP Yes. Who are you talking about destroying?

WICKED WITCH_PP You blind fools! Do you not realize the truth about who travels with you? (long pause)

SCARECROW_PP ...Boq’s not really a munchkin?

[The door blasts into the room.]

BOQ_PP Knock, knock.

[Enter Glinda, Dorothy, Toto and Boq.]

DOROTHY_PP Oh, Scarecrow! What have they done to you?!

[She races across. Wicked Witch trips her, sending her sprawling onto the floor. Wicked Witch cackles in delight.Toto marches up to her.]

TOTO_PP You can pick on me... You can pick on the Munchkin...

BOQ_PP She can?

TOTO_PP But don’t you EVER lay a FINGER—

BOQ_PP Or toe.

TOTO_PP Or toe — On MY DOROTHY!

[He launches at the Witch’s leg and bites and holds. Wicked Witch howls. Boq grabs her hair and pulls while Glinda swats at her with her wand.

Dorothy has crawled over to Lion, Tin Man and Scarecrow.] 51.

DOROTHY_PP Oh, Scarecrow, I’m so sorry this happened to you.

LION_PP They pulled my tail.

DOROTHY_PP It would have been better for you all if I had never come at all.

TIN MAN_PP How can you say that? If it weren’t for you, I’d still be rusted in the wood.

LION_PP I never would have had the courage to face a Wicked Witch.

SCARECROW_PP I would still be an empty-headed sack of straw.

TIN MAN_PP Even if the Witch keeps us locked up forever, Dorothy, I wouldn’t trade having met you.

LION_PP It’s the best thing that ever happened to us.

SCARECROW_PP Try not to cry, Dorothy. Good always finds a way.

WICKED WITCH_PP Except today! (kicks Toto away, grabs Boq’s nose and wheels on Glinda) Goodbye, Glinda. Parting is such sweet...joy! (suddenly the Witch pitches forward as if hit in the back of the head.)

[Enter Tip swinging sling.]

WICKED WITCH_PP (growling) No...

SCARECROW_PP I told you. 52.

TIP_PP (oddly calm) Bad news, Dorothy. I’ve scoured the castle. Ozma is not here.

WICKED WITCH_PP She’s here. But I hope not for long.

TIP_PP If you have her, release her.

WIZARD You’re no match for her, warrior!

TIP_PP Let us see if I am or no.

TOTO_PP Don’t do this, Tip.

DOROTHY_PP Just run, Tip. Run while you can.

WICKED WITCH_PP Yes, Tip. Run away. Never come back.

TIP_PP I have followed my heart for as long as I can remember and it has not yet led me astray.

BOQ_PP And what does your heart tell you now?

TIP_PP It tells me no Witch has power over me.

[The Wicked Witch howls and unleashes magical attacks on Tip. Tip deflects them with her sword. The spells are powerful, but Tip manages to keep her feet.]

BOQ_PP (amazed, to Toto) It’s not possible to deflect magic with a sword... is it? 53.

TOTO_PP (in answer) I’m a dog.

[Suddenly, Tip stumbles and falls. Her sword clatters away. Witch uses magic to pin her down.]

WICKED WITCH_PP Now - to finish what I started years ago!

TIN MAN_PP (grabbing axe from nearby) Oh, no you don’t!

WICKED WITCH_PP Rusty-Dusty! Stand your ground!

[Tin Man freezes in place.]

LION_PP Hey! That’s my friend!

[Lion leaps up, roaring. He charges forward.]

WICKED WITCH_PP Sing a ditty, little Kitty!

[Lion drops to all fours and begins singing Meow Mix song.]

SCARECROW_PP Hey, now! Leave them alone!

[He grabs his own legs and throws them at the Witch.]

WICKED WITCH_PP Double, double, straw is trouble. When fire burns you’re ash and rubble.

[Suddenly, Scarecrow’s arms is ablaze. He waves it all around, trying to pat himself out. Dorothy and the Wizard try to help.]

TOTO_PP Glinda, help him. 54.

GLINDA_PP Cool summer breeze, moving through trees—

WICKED WITCH_PP (interrupting) Keep your trap locked, if you could please.

[Glinda’s mouth claps shut and she stumbles back.]

TOTO_PP Boq, do something!

BOQ_PP (panicked) I pledge allegiance to the Witch Of the united regions of Ozia.

WIZARD Dorothy! There! Water!

[Dorothy races to the bucket.]

WICKED WITCH_PP (racing forward) No! Drop that bucket or, I swear, all your friends will—

[Dorothy heaves the bucket, dousing Scarecrow and the Witch with water. The Witch shrieks in terror.]

WICKED WITCH_PP Nooooo! I’m melting! Melting! (rounding to Tip, she feebly lunges for her, but sinks into her own gown.)

[All stare in bewilderment. Toto cautiously steps on the edges of her gown.]

TOTO_PP She’s gone. (silence)

BOQ_PP (breaking silence, making everyone jump) Way to go, Dorothy! Yeah! 55.

DOROTHY_PP But I didn’t mean to hurt her! How could I know?

SCARECROW You didn’t - but you knew you were helping your friends, and that undid the Wicked Witch.

LION_PP Did she know that was her reaction to water? And if she did, why did she have a bucket of it lying around—?

[Tin Man kicks Lion’s shin.]

BOQ_PP You guys know I was just joking about joining the Wicked Witch, right? I was just stalling for time - playing a little ruse!

[Enter Munchkins.]

MUNCHKINS CHARGE!!!!

[They suddenly stop, look around, confused.]

BOQ_PP The Wicked Witch is defeated!

[They cheer (and wipe brows) then beckon to others offstage. Enter all other cast members. There are murmurs of ‘The Witch is gone?’ ‘Dorothy destroyed the witch!’ ‘We’re free.’]

GLINDA_PP (smiling at all) Now that the Wicked Witch is gone - all her curses will be lifted.

[Lights begin to flash.]

DOROTHY_PP Oh, goodness! What now?

[First, the audience is continually plunged into darkness, but the flashes of light grow faster and faster until they are nearly strobing. Then suddenly go out.] 56.

BOQ_PP What... was that?

[Lights slowly rise and, though Tip is standing where we last noticed her, she no longer appears the same. She is dressed in a beautiful gown and nearly glitters in the light.]

DOROTHY_PP T-tip?

[Glinda, Wizard, Boq, Center Stage, and Spotlight players bow in reverence. The others slowly join them except Dorothy, who steps forward in wonder.]

TIP_PP (in a much more gentle voice) It seems the Wicked Witch was right. I was here.

DOROTHY_PP You’re... Princess Ozma?

TIP_PP I am. I remember now.

WIZARD (pounds fist in hand, excited) Your face was so like hers, but your manner so different.

LION_PP How did it happen? How did you forget?

TIP_PP When I first faced the Wicked Witch, I offered her the West, if she would live in peace. Rather than accept my terms, she tried to destroy me.

BOQ_PP But our Princess Ozma can’t be destroyed so easily!

TIP_PP The Terrible Spell failed to erase me from OZ.

LION_PP But it erased your memory. 57.

TIN MAN_PP And now that the Wicked Witch is gone, you’re returned to your proper self.

TIP_PP Thanks to Dorothy. How can I repay you? Ask any wish, and it will be yours.

TOTO_PP Now’s the time, Dorothy. Let’s get home.

DOROTHY_PP (smiles at Toto, ruffles his head) (to Princess Ozma) I would like my friends to receive their gifts. A heart, a brain and courage.

TOTO_PP That’s right. Kansas, here we come—say what?

TIN MAN_PP Dorothy, you need to wish to go home.

SCARECROW_PP Isn’t that what you want?

DOROTHY_PP (with tears in her eyes) I do want to go home - but I can’t ask something for myself when my friends still need help.

WIZARD Bravo. Spoken like a true GOOD witch.

TOTO_PP Well, the wish to go home would have technically helped me, but - no, no - this, this is good.

TIP_PP Tin Man, I may have forgotten who I was, but I remember being Tip. We traveled together and I learned how great your heart truly is. Say you have no heart no more.

WIZARD And Lion, you journeyed out of your home, stood your ground before my wonderfully frightening projection, faced a Wicked Witch, and risked all when your friend Tin Man was in trouble. Say you have no courage no more. 58.

GLINDA_PP And gentle Scarecrow, you have helped Dorothy nearly every step of the way with insight and intellect. When others were stuck, you saw a way through. Say you have no brain no more.

TIP_PP (to Dorothy) Which leaves a wish still waiting for you.

DOROTHY_PP Then, I do wish to go home, to see my family. But, oh, I’m going to miss you all so.

TIP_PP Of course. They are your family now too. Home and Family are with those who love you - and so I grant your wish. You may journey to your home whenever you wish...

WIZARD Whether it be Kansas...

GLINDA_PP Or here in OZ.

DOROTHY_PP Really? Oh, thank you! Thank you!

TIP_PP You only need to click the ruby slippers, think where you wish to be and say, “There’s no place like home”.

DOROTHY_PP There’s no place like home.
