1971 Daytona 24 Hours www.porscheroadandrace.com 50 Years of the Porsche 917 – Colours of Speed Published: 15th May 2019 By: Glen Smale Online version: https://www.porscheroadandrace.com/50-years-of-the-porsche-917-colours-of-speed/ The Porsche 917-001 will be shown in the Porsche Museum for the first time in its original condition My 2019 European Expedition had been organised for some months, which was to take in the WEC Spa-Francorchamps 6 Hours (1-4 May) followed by almost a week in Stuttgart (5-10 May). It had not occurred to me and nor had I been informed, that Porsche was preparing its “50 Years of the Porsche 917 – Colours of Speed” exhibition at their Museum in Stuttgart. That’s what is known as being in the right place at the right time! www.porscheroadandrace.com The name says it all: “50 Years of Porsche 917 – Colours of Speed” will show the brightness of all the 917 models The whole reason for my trip to Porsche in Stuttgart this May was to photograph a bunch of iconic race cars, for features planned in the future. It was purely coincidental that two of the cars planned for the said exhibition, just happened to also be on my list to photograph – the #64 Porsche 908 LH and the #23 Porsche 917/20 “Sau.” www.porscheroadandrace.com The #23 Porsche 917/20 “Sau” (1971) at Porsche Museum May 2019 www.porscheroadandrace.com The #64 Porsche 908 LH 3-litre (1968) at Porsche Museum May 2019 This year, 2019, is of course a very important milestone in Porsche’s motorsport heritage, as it is the 50th anniversary of the introduction of Porsche’s all-conquering 917 race car. The Porsche Museum is, as expected, honouring the 50th anniversary of this racing icon from 14 May to 15 September 2019 as part of a comprehensive special exhibition entitled “50 Years of the Porsche 917 – Colours of Speed.” A total of 14 exhibits – including ten 917 models and the 908 LH (that almost snatched the 1969 Le Mans 24 Hours from Ford), will be on show. The ten 917s alone boast a total of 7490 PS! www.porscheroadandrace.com A journey back to the origin: legends amongst themselves www.porscheroadandrace.com 917-001 restored to its original 1969 condition The Group 4 sports car was developed to secure an overall win in the Le Mans 24-hour race and to win the World Championship for Makes. It was manufactured in 1969 as the first of a total of 25 vehicles required for type approval by the CSI (the competition department of the FIA). The #001 marks the start of the unprecedented success story of the 917 racing car, and is therefore the highlight of the special exhibition. For more than a year, museum mechanics, former technicians and engineers from Zuffenhausen and Weissach, the Porsche AG historic archive, as well as partner companies, have worked on restoring this first 917. It is now in exactly the same condition as it was on 12 March 1969, when it was presented to the world at the Geneva Motor Show. www.porscheroadandrace.com Historical staging of the 917 line up at Werk 1 in Zuffenhausen, where the race department was situated back in the days 917 short-tail – the Le Mans winners of 1970 and 1971 Two further highlights in the special exhibition are both Le Mans 24 Hour winning vehicles from 1970 and 1971. In 1970, Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood drove the #23 917 KH (short-tail) in the world-famous red-white Salzburg design to the company’s first overall victory in the race. The following year, Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennep managed to repeat this success in the #22 Martini 917 KH. Covering a distance of 5335 km with an average speed of 222.3 km/h, they set two records that were to remain unbeaten for 39 years. www.porscheroadandrace.com The first victory at Le Mans, by the #23 Porsche 917 KH in 1970. The original car will be part of the special exhibition www.porscheroadandrace.com The #22 Porsche 917 KH at Le Mans in 1971 – the drivers and overall winners were the Dutch pairing of Gijs van Lennep and Helmut Marko Technology of the Porsche 917 Alongside seven other 917 models and two Langhek models and the 917 PA Spyder, which became a test car with 16-cylinder engine, the special exhibition also provides an in-depth insight into its technology. The fine art of the twelve-cylinder engine designed by Hans Mezger is illustrated by numerous small exhibits such as crankshafts, piston and cylinder sleeve sets, camshafts and turbochargers. Glass-fibre components from the restoration phase of the 917-001 also demonstrates the high standard of body construction at the time. www.porscheroadandrace.com The special exhibition “50 Years of Porsche 917 – Colours of Speed” will run at the Porsche Museum from 14 May until 15 September www.porscheroadandrace.com The 911 Turbo shows how racing technology has made its way into series production with components such as the turbocharger and the brake system. With this model, the turbo technology previously used with success in the 917/10 and 917/30 found its way into this Porsche production sports car in 1974. For the 1978 model year, the 911 Turbo also benefited from a brake system which had previously been developed for the 917 in a very similar form. In 1970, a studio model was created on a scale of 1:4, which was originally one of the draft designs during the development of the 917/20 Sau or “Pink Pig.” This model was further developed by the team under Anatole Lapine, the Head of Design at the time. They turned it into a visionary future vehicle which even had a computer unit in addition to its streamlined body. www.porscheroadandrace.com In 1970, a studio model was created on a scale of 1:4, which was originally one of the draft designs during the development of the 917/20 www.porscheroadandrace.com “Pink Pig” More than 40 years later, the designers once again picked up the theme of the 917 – this time in the form of a concept study from 2013 with the title “917 Living Legend,” which the Porsche Museum is presenting to the public for the first time as part of this special exhibition. This 1:1 model was created in modelling clay for the return of Porsche to the LMP1 class of endurance racing, with the objective of further overall wins in Le Mans. A small team of designers, aerodynamic experts, package specialists, chassis and drive technicians designed this tribute to the legendary 917 with the #23 in “Salzburg design” in just six months. The history and technology of the 917 comes alive Visitors can experience the “racing car of the century” with a total of six toolboxes: alongside the fascinating technology of the 917, they reflect the racing world of that time, the brand sponsorship, as well as the transfer of technology from the 917 to subsequent Porsche racing and series production vehicles. Interactive media stations enhance the visitors’ experience of the history of the 917 – using multimedia presentations with real film scenes from races from the day. www.porscheroadandrace.com The so-called “toolboxes” explain the technology of the different 917 models A real racing atmosphere and anniversary book The special exhibition, which probably has the highest horsepower rating of any so far, is rounded off with numerous racing posters and small exhibits.     Model T (Edited from Wikipedia) SUMMARY The Ford Model T (colloquially known as the Tin Lizzie, Leaping Lena, or flivver) is an automobile produced by Ford Motor Company from October 1, 1908, to May 26, 1927. It is generally regarded as the first affordable automobile, the car that opened travel to the common middle-class American; some of this was because of Ford's efficient fabrication, including assembly line production instead of individual hand crafting. The Ford Model T was named the most influential car of the 20th century in the 1999 Car of the Century competition, ahead of the BMC Mini, Citroën DS, and Volkswagen Type 1. Ford's Model T was successful not only because it provided inexpensive transportation on a massive scale, but also because the car signified innovation for the rising middle class and became a powerful symbol of America's age of modernization. With 16.5 million sold it stands eighth on the top ten list of most sold cars of all time as of 2012. Although automobiles had already existed for decades, they were still mostly scarce and expensive at the Model T's introduction in 1908. Positioned as reliable, easily maintained, mass-market transportation, it was a runaway success. In a matter of days after the release, 15,000 orders were placed. The first production Model T was produced on August 12, 1908 and left the factory on September 27, 1908, at the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant in Detroit, Michigan. On May 26, 1927, Henry Ford watched the 15 millionth Model T Ford roll off the assembly line at his factory in Highland Park, Michigan.

    Motoring 'Goddess' will soon be 60 DAVE MOORE Ahead of its time, and yet timeless: Still regularly cast by Hollywood as a car of the future. At its launch 59 years ago, the Citroen DS stopped the automotive world in its tracks, with a stunning visual design inside and out, and under-the-skin engineering that hasn't been matched since in terms of taking the industry forward. Its jaw-dropping introduction occurred at the 1955 edition of the City of Light's car salon. But slightly ironically, the space age Citroen DS will be celebrating its 60th birthday at London's premium classic car show, as there is no Paris event next year. "Space age" is no overused description for this car, as in recent years Hollywood has used well-preserved examples of the Citroen to illustrate vehicles in what they often call: "some time in the not too distant future." To some it is the most beautiful car of all time, a "Goddess". To others, it was the most technically advanced car of its era, a revolutionary machine that was years ahead of its time. Today, the Citroen DS still has the ability to turn heads like few other classic cars. When the DS was launched in Paris, its avant- garde design stunned show-goers. Some 743 orders were taken in the first 15 minutes of the show's opening and by the end of the first day that total had risen to an incredible 12,000. At a time when most cars were rear-wheel drive and running on old-fashioned "cart springs", the DS19's futuristic specification featured front-wheel drive, hydropneumatic self levelling suspension, a semi-automatic gearbox and even a fibreglass roof to lower the centre of gravity.

    The British Motor Corporation (Australia), released the Austin 1800 onto the local 30YEARSOFTRE market on the 22nd November 1965, just thirteen months after the model's release in the UK. During the extra months develop­ AUSTIN 1800 ment, various modifications were made to the car. These modifications were later to be incorporated into the UK models. The 1800 soon became a popular car, even being voted the Modern Motor's best compact of the year, in fact the interior space inside the car still leaves almost all other cars far behind (with the exception of Rollers etc). In Australia approximately 60,000 Austin 1800 were produced. The Austin 1800 had various rallying success in its time including a win in the Southern Cross Rally (1969), and coming second (beating Falcon GT's and Porsche), and sixth, in the 1968 London to Sydney A rare care in Australia is this Austin 3 litre, a large car with 6 cylinder conventional drive using the Marathon.     BMW AG Presse. The story of an exception: the BMW M3 is 25. The anticipation began in August 1985. That summer Germany’s automobile magazines built up their readers’ expectations for the fastest 3 Series BMW of all times. The key data revealed a sports car that would punch way above its class: 200 hp, top speed in excess of 230 km/h, sprint from a standing start to 100 km/h inside 6.7 seconds. However, the story was that “the most dynamic BMW 3 Series drivers” would have to wait until mid-1986. The pundits were right on that count. But one prediction missed the mark by a mile: anyone who “wants to be in the A Team needs to be turbochar- ged under the bonnet”. Not true. The BMW M3 became the most successful touring car in motor-sport history. The M3 project was launched just a few months earlier. Production of the M1 mid-engine sports car had already been discontinued for some time and BMW CEO Eberhard Kuenheim commissioned a design for a successor, almost as an aside, according to legend. After one of his regular visits to Motorsport GmbH in Munich’s Preußenstraße he said, almost as he was lea- ving: “Mr. Rosche, we need a sporty engine for the 3 Series.” His aspi- ration was in good hands. Motorsport GmbH with its managing director of technical development Paul Rosche had demonstrated its expertise with the legendary 5 Series saloons driven by M engines as well as developing the Formula 1 turbo engine that powered Brazilian Nelson Piquet to win the World Championship in the Brabham BMW in 1983.

The company expanded too quickly, and by 1916 Karl Friedrich Rapp resigned from the company because of financial troubles. The company was taken over by two Austrians Franz- Josef Popp and Max Fritz backed by a Vienna engines. Rapp establishes "Rapp-Motorenwerke" in a former bicycle factory near Munich. He starts manufacturing his own aircraft engines but unfortunately they suffered form problems with vibrations. Close to Rapp´s factory, Gustav Otto, the son of the inventor of the four-stroke internal combustion engine, sets up a business building small aircrafts.

    Press release 14 May 2019 The Porsche Museum presents the success story of an icon raceing car New special exhibition “50 Years of the Porsche 917 – Colours of Speed” Stuttgart. This year possibly the most prominent racing car in Porsche motor racing history is celebrating its 50th birthday: the Porsche 917. The Porsche Museum is hon- ouring the 50th anniversary of the racing sport icon from 14 May to 15 September 2019 as part of a comprehensive special exhibition entitled “50 Years of the Porsche 917 – Colours of Speed”. A total of 14 exhibits – including ten 917 models alone with a total of 7,490 PS – will be on show. 917- 001 restored to its original 1969 condition The Group 4 sports car, which was developed to secure an overall win at Le Mans 24 hour race and to win the World Championship for Makes, was manufactured in 1969 and was the first of a total of 25 vehicles required for type approval. The Number One marks the start of the unprecedented success story of the 917 racing car, and is there- fore the highlight of the special exhibition. For more than a year, museum mechanics, former technicians and engineers from Zuffenhausen and Weissach, the Porsche AG historic archive, as well as partner companies, have worked on restoring this first 917. It is now in exactly the same condition as it was on 12 March 1969, when it was pre- sented to the world at the Geneva Motor Show. 917 short-tail – the Le Mans winners of 1970 and 1971 Two further highlights of the special exhibition are both winning vehicles of the Le Mans 24 hour race from 1970 and 1971.
