"Terry Allen:: The AD Interview." Aquarium Drunkard. 2019. Web. Terry Allen :: The AD Interview Terry Allen is a maker of things. A sculptor, illustrator, playwright, collagist, and, perhaps most famously, a singer and songwriter who, over the last five decades, has amassed an extensive catalog of avant-country gold. His 1975 album Juarez, a striking and brilliant concept album that plays as a kind of sunburned, southwestern Badlands, and 1979’s sprawling Lubbock (On Everything), a rollicking and wry send-up of Allen’s West Texas hometown, are rightly held up as unimpeachable masterpieces of proto-americana music. Each have recently received extensive reissues by the North Carolina label Paradise of Bachelors, who will also issue Allen’s forthcoming new album. Juarez by Terry Allen We recently sat down with Allen at the Louver Gallery in Venice, CA, who on June 26th opened Terry Allen: The Exact Moment it Happens in the West, a comprehensive two-story exhibit of Allen’s work across multiple mediums dating from the 1960s to the present. The show will run through September 28th. In an incredibly rare occurrence, Allen also in late July performed two sold out nights at Zebulon on the east side of Los Angeles with an all-star band including Allen’s son Bukka, acclaimed guitar-slinger, Bob Dylan bandleader, and Townes-Van-Zandt-channeler Charlie Sexton, Texan fiddler Richard Bowden, and the singer-songwriter Shannon McNally. Our conversation has been slightly edited for length and clarity. Aquarium Drunkard: One thing that has always interested me about your body of work, particularly your recorded music body of work, is your repertoire over time, where songs such as “Cortez Sail,” or “Four Corners,” or “Red Bird,” have appeared throughout your career in various incarnations, recorded at various times. -

And his Crickets. The world knows Buddy as the martyred hero of “American Pie,” Don McLean’s #1 rockin’ 1971 saga of dry levees, roaring Chevys, and a golden-age America when rock was young. Long before leaded Zeppelin dreams soared aloft to the stars on ‘Stairways to Heaven,’ rock and roll first honored lean Texan Buddy Holly with his fiery Fender Stratocaster and magic voice. 02-233 Ch16 9/19/02 2:27 PM Page 255 16 Lubbock on Everything: The Evocation of Place in the Music of West Texas Blake Gumprecht The role of landscape and the importance of place in literature, poetry, the visual arts, even cinema and television are well established and have been widely discussed and written about. Think of Faulkner’s Mississippi, the New England poetry of Robert Frost, the regionalist paintings of John Steuart Curry, or, in a contemporary sense, the early movies of Barry Levinson, with their rich depictions of Baltimore. There are countless other examples. Texas could be considered a protagonist in the novels of Larry McMurtry. The American Southwest is central to the art of Georgia O’Keeffe. New York City acts as far more than just a setting for the films of Woody Allen. The creative arts have helped shape our views of such places, and the study of works in which particular places figure prominently can help us better understand those places and human perceptions of them.1 Place can also be important to music, yet this has been largely overlooked by scholars. The literature on the subject, in fact, is nearly nonexistent. A sim- ple search of a national library database, for example, retrieved 295 records under the subject heading “landscape in literature” and more than 1,000 un- der the heading “landscape in art,” but a similar search using the phrase “landscape in music” turned up nothing.2 This line of inquiry is so poorly de- veloped that no equivalent subject heading has been established. -

The Crickets
The Crickets A rockabilly/rock and roll/pop band formed in 1957 in Lubbock, Texas, and best known for helping launch the career of rock and roll icon, Buddy Holly. The founding members Charles Hardin Holley (aka Buddy Holly), lead vocals and guitar, (b Lubbock, Texas, Sept 7, 1936, d Mason City, Iowa, Feb 3, 1959), and Bob Montgomery, vocals and guitar, (b Lampasas, Texas, May 12, 1937) met at Hutchinson Junior High School, and, by the Fall of 1953, were playing on Lubbock radio station KDAV‟s „Sunday Party‟ program as the Buddy and Bob Show. The two were soon joined by friend and bass player, Larry Welborn (b Lubbock, April 13, 1939). The three soon performed “Flower of My Heart,” a song written by Montgomery for a contest at Lubbock High School. The tune was chosen as the 1954 Senior Class Song. Following this local success, Holly, Montgomery, and Welborn then headed to Wichita Falls, Texas, in order to record demos of other songs. 1955 was a busy year for Holly and his friends. In February they opened for Elvis Presley at Lubbock‟s Fair Park Coliseum. In October, they performed in a show featuring Bill Haley and the Comets and then opened for Elvis again. Soon Holly signed a solo recording contract as a „country‟ artist and left Lubbock for Nashville, causing the trio to break up. By 1957, however, Holly had met with little success in Nashville. He returned to Lubbock and was joined by Joe Mauldin (b Lubbock, July 8, 1940) on bass, Jerry Allison (b Hillsboro, Texas, Aug 31, 1939) on drums, and Niki Sullivan (b South Gate, California, June 23, 1937, d Sugar Creek, Missouri, April 6, 2004) on rhythm guitar. -

Being the youngest of four children, he was always called “Buddy” by his family. Holly, the popularized spelling of his last name, came later from a spelling error in a record con- tract. His two older brothers taught him how to play the guitar and, at age eleven, he began taking piano lessons, but soon switched to the steel guitar. Thoroughly inspired by the blues and country that he heard on the radio, Holly won five dollars at age five singing Down the River of Memories. In 1951, Holly met Bob Montgomery, a fellow seventh-grader at Hutchinson Jr. High, who also played guitar and sang country songs. By the time Holly and Montgomery entered high school, they were growing their audience by appearing at youth clubs, performing music they now dubbed as "Western and Bop." Local radio stations also developed Holly and Montgomery’s career. KDAV, the nation's first all-country radio station, held a weekly "Sunday Party" live on air, where Holly and Montgomery were frequent guests.
