I am pleased to report that in 2008, our attorneys dedicated more than Orange County 68,000 hours of pro bono and community service work, a 58% increase from the previous year. San Diego Inspired by the Paul Hastings Pro Bono Challenge (a firmwide San Francisco initiative aimed at increasing the number of pro bono hours per attorney from 25 to 75 annually), lawyers at all levels Shanghai increased their pro bono participation, with 83.1 hours logged on average per attorney. Washington, D.C. At the Firm’s recent Partner’s Retreat, Paris partner Dominique Borde was named the recipient of the 2009 Resources Hastings Award for Community Service, an honor given to a firm partner who demonstrates sustained leadership in Office Contacts: community and pro bono service. A long-time board member Pro Bono & of Doctors Without Borders, Dominique has devoted hundreds Community of pro bono work hours to support causes as diverse as helping Committee visual artists to obtain licensing agreements to assisting Afghan women in their pursuit of education and equal rights. Congratulations to Dominique for his pro bono commitment! 15. »Sh-Boom« Die Gesangsgruppen Martin Pfleiderer In den USA gab es bereits im 19. Jahrhundert professionelle Gesangsgrup- pen. So reisten etwa im Rahmen von Minstrelsy und Vaudeville zahlreiche singende Familiengruppen, insbesondere von Immigranten aus Deutsch- land und Österreich, durchs Land (vgl. Friedman/Gribin 2013: 3–9). Im 20. Jahrhundert veränderten sich die Traditionen des Gruppengesangs aufgrund der fortschreitenden Professionalisierung und der neuen Me- dientechnologien, aber auch aufgrund gesamtkultureller Veränderungen. Im Folgenden sollen einige der stilistischen Entwicklungen des populären Gruppengesangs in den USA zwischen 1900 und 1960 dargestellt werden. Die zentrale Fragestellung richtet sich auf die Art und Weise, wie die ver- schiedenen Gesangsstimmen einer Vokalgruppe zusammenwirken. Diese Gestaltungsweisen, ihr Auftreten in verschiedenen Musikgenres und ihre historischen Veränderungen sollen exemplarisch anhand von einflussrei- chen Aufnahmen und Vokalgruppen dargestellt werden. Gegenstand sind Vokalgruppen mit einer Besetzung von drei bis sechs Sängerinnen oder Sängern mit oder ohne zusätzliche Instrumental begleitung, die unter ei- nem gemeinsamen Gruppennamen aufgetreten sind. Vokalensembles, die als Background-Bands für einen Gesangsstar fungieren, werden dagegen nur am Rande thematisiert, ebenso wie größere Vokalensembles und Chö- re. Good afternoon, Bill, accompanied by his wife, Nancy. This interview is conducted by Anthony Brown with Ken Kimery. Bill, if we could start with you stating your full name, your birth date, and where you were born. Holman: My full name is Willis Leonard Holman. I was born in Olive, California, May 21st, 1927. Brown: Where exactly is Olive, California? Holman: Strange you should ask [laughs]. Now it‟s a part of Orange, California. You may not know where Orange is either. Orange is near Santa Ana, which is the county seat of Orange County, California. I don‟t know if Olive was a part of Orange at the time, or whether Orange has just grown up around it, or what. But it‟s located in the city of Orange, although I think it‟s a separate municipality. Anyway, it was a really small town. I always say there was a couple of orange-packing houses and a railroad spur. Probably more than that, but not a whole lot. -

There and Back Again Jan 2017 – by Jason Cohen In 1962 Terry Allen left Lubbock to pursue what he couldn’t imagine ever happening in his hometown: a life as an artist. More than fifty years later, the sculptor, painter, playwright, and musician behind Juarez and Lubbock (On Everything) is ready for a return. Terry Allen, photographed in Austin, in November 2016. Photograph by Leann Mueller The guide leading incoming freshmen around Texas Tech University on the first Saturday of 2016’s college- football season didn’t look as though he’d been on campus longer than one academic year himself, but he had his patter down. As the group moved from the library to the student union, he pointed out a work commissioned by the school’s public art program and installed in 2003: a hominid-like bronze figure cast entirely from books. While all the students call it “Bookman,” the sculpture’s formal title is a play on the university’s Red Raiders nickname: Read Reader. And there’s a second pun in Bookman’s anatomical construction. “His spine is made out of actual book spines,” the guide observed, before offering his own interpretation of the work. “He’s running to the library to cram for his test. But he’s probably going to fail, because he’s reading a website.” What the collegiate docent didn’t mention was the sculptor, a not-insignificant omission. Bookman sprung from the mind and hands of Lubbock native and one-semester Texas Tech dropout Terry Allen, who is arguably the first of Lubbock’s legendary post-hippie semi-country singer-songwriters. -
