Bourdieu and the Music Field Professor Michael Grenfell This work as an example of the: Problem of Aesthetics A Reflective and Relational Methodology ‘to construct systems of intelligible relations capable of making sense of sentient data’. Rules of Art: p.xvi A reflexive understanding of the expressive impulse in trans-historical fields and the necessity of human creativity immanent in them. (ibid). A Bourdieusian Methodology for the Sub-Field of Musical Production • The process is always iterative … so this paper presents a ‘work in progress’ … • The presentation represents the state of play in a third cycle through data collection and analysis …so findings are contingent and diagrams used are the current working diagrams! • The process begins with the most prominent agents in the field since these are the ones with the most capital and the best configuration. A Bourdieusian Approach to the Music Field ……..involves……… Structure Structuring and Structured Structures Externalisation of Internality and the Internalisation of Externality => ‘A science of dialectical relations between objective structures…and the subjective dispositions within which these structures are actualised and which tend to reproduce them’. Bourdieu’s Thinking Tools “Habitus and Field designate bundles of relations. A field consists of a set of objective, historical relations between positions anchored in certain forms of power (or capital); habitus consists of a set of historical relations ‘deposited’ within individual bodies in the forms of mental and corporeal

  • Eric Clapton

August 2012 Newsletter ------------------------------------ Yesterday & Today Records P.O.Box 54 Miranda NSW 2228 Phone: (02) 95311710 Email:[email protected] www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ------------------------------------------------ Postage Australia post is essentially the world’s most expensive service. We aim to break even on postage and will use the best method to minimise costs. One good innovation is the introduction of the “POST PLUS” satchels, which replace the old red satchels and include a tracking number. Available in 3 sizes they are 500 grams ($7.50) 3kgs ($11.50) 5kgs ($14.50) P & P. The latter 2 are perfect for larger interstate packages as anything over 500 grams even is going to cost more than $11.50. We can take a cd out of a case to reduce costs. Basically 1 cd still $2. 2cds $3 and rest as they will fit. Again Australia Post have this ludicrous notion that if a package can fit through a certain slot on a card it goes as a letter whereas if it doesn’t it is classified as a “parcel” and can cost up to 5 times as much. One day I will send a letter to the Minister for Trade as their policies are distinctly prejudicial to commerce. Out here they make massive profits but offer a very poor number of services and charge top dollar for what they do provide. Still, the mail mostly always gets there. But until ssuch times as their local monopoly remains, things won’t be much different. ----------------------------------------------- For those long term customers and anyone receiving these newsletters for the first time we have several walk in sales per year, with the next being Saturday August 25th.

  • Saiichi Sugiyama Band Epk 2016
SAIICHI SUGIYAMA BAND EPK (July 2016) British blues-rock guitarist Saiichi Sugiyama and his band are touring the UK in September 2016 ahead of their new album release next year. Saiichi Sugiyama Band is a group of musicians hailing from Surrey/London that harks back to the halcyon days of rock and soul, 1965-1974, brought together in 2010 by the guitarist/composer Saiichi [pronounced: “sigh-eee- chee”], who has a career spanning 25 years as a solo artist in the British blues scene. The core of the group is Rietta Austin (lead vocals), Saiichi Sugiyama (guitar/vocals/composer), Ben Reed (bass guitar) and Mune Sugiyama (producer/arranger/drums). When playing live, the group are augmented by touring musicians including Stuart Dixon (rhythm guitar), Katrin Yr (lead vocals) and Wez Johnson (drums). The former members Lizzie Hibbert (lead vocals) and Dave Munch Moore (keys) also record with the group in studio. The group has been spending the past months working on their new studio album in various recording studios, a follow up to the studio live album “the Smokehouse Sessions” from 2014. The new album will include a track entitled “Melting Away”, written by Saiichi and featuring the late bass hero Andy Fraser, ex-Free and composer of the 1970 smash single, “All Right Now.” The initial inspiration for “Melting Away” came to Saiichi while on a trip to his native Japan. To Saiichi the melody was reminiscent of Free guitarist Paul Kossoff, who died in 1976. Creating a demo when he returned home to the UK, Saiichi came up with bass parts that brought Free bassman Andy Fraser to mind.

  • By Jason Cohen
There and Back Again Jan 2017 – by Jason Cohen In 1962 Terry Allen left Lubbock to pursue what he couldn’t imagine ever happening in his hometown: a life as an artist. More than fifty years later, the sculptor, painter, playwright, and musician behind Juarez and Lubbock (On Everything) is ready for a return. Terry Allen, photographed in Austin, in November 2016. Photograph by Leann Mueller The guide leading incoming freshmen around Texas Tech University on the first Saturday of 2016’s college- football season didn’t look as though he’d been on campus longer than one academic year himself, but he had his patter down. As the group moved from the library to the student union, he pointed out a work commissioned by the school’s public art program and installed in 2003: a hominid-like bronze figure cast entirely from books. While all the students call it “Bookman,” the sculpture’s formal title is a play on the university’s Red Raiders nickname: Read Reader. And there’s a second pun in Bookman’s anatomical construction. “His spine is made out of actual book spines,” the guide observed, before offering his own interpretation of the work. “He’s running to the library to cram for his test. But he’s probably going to fail, because he’s reading a website.” What the collegiate docent didn’t mention was the sculptor, a not-insignificant omission. Bookman sprung from the mind and hands of Lubbock native and one-semester Texas Tech dropout Terry Allen, who is arguably the first of Lubbock’s legendary post-hippie semi-country singer-songwriters.

KEITH & BETTY MOTT OF CLAYGATE The story of a life time in the sport of Pigeon Racing Introduction I was born in Feltham, near Heathrow Airport in October 1950. I first met my wife, Betty, in late 1969 and this was through my friendship with her brother, Alfie, who raced pigeons and was a keen on ‘The Impalas’, the band I played drums in. Alfie North was a regular visitor to the bands Sunday night gig at the Swam PH in Kingston and with our mutual interest in pigeons and Rock music, we used to talk ‘shop’ during my mid- session break. From time to time he would bring his sister, Betty, to the ‘Swan’ gig and in the end it was mostly her and me talk about her main interest of those days, Speedway racing. I had known this wonderful girl named, Betty North, for a few months in early 1971 and I asked her out for our first date while at the big Gene Vincent gig at the Kingston Coronation Hall, when we were playing on the same bill. I knew she was there that night and I went out in to audience to find her. My life started on that night in 1971 and we got married in May 1972. We had two wonderful kids in Caroline and Mark, and in turn they have given us five brilliant grand children in Sasha, Katie, Ryan, Sophia and Connie. We are now great grandparents, with our Mason being born in August 2018! When we married in 1972 she said that it might only last about two years because of my ‘Rock ‘n Roll’ life style and all that entailed, but here we are 50 years later and still madly in love and still happily married! Then came the pigeons! At that time I thought to myself, well she is from a pigeon racing family, with her late father, Alf North senior, and her brother racing in partnership in the Surbiton FC for many years, so she knew what she was committing to by marring a pigeon fancier.
