Parrot Head Members Survived the Winter and Are Ready to Fly Into Some Sunny Warm Weather
Issue #26 Winter 2012 Business Tagline or Motto HELLO from the President's Perch CONTENTS : By the time this edition arrives, we will be almost through what has been a mild winter. I hope all of our Parrot Head members survived the winter and are ready to fly into some sunny warm weather. Things were certainly not mild or cold in our Berks County Parrot Head Club. Christmas in the Caribbean 2 In December we hosted another successful Toys for Tots party at the Christmas in the Caribbean Spruce and delivered more toys and cash to the Marines than any prior Afterparty 3 year. Things heated up even more with the 4th annual Christmas show Cabin Fever Festival 4 at the Miller Center on December 17th. The Club Trini band (Michael Photomontage I 5 Utley and Robert Greenidge) was enjoyed by all. Jimmy and the Parrots entertained almost 200 members and guests at the after party (in the Viva lounge) that included a “Quick Licks” featuring buffet and a few drinks. Through your efforts and your support of the show we raised $14,000 for Robert Greenidge 6 Crime Alert Berks. Toys for Tots 7 Winter Cabin Fever was next, and Berks Encore was the chosen charity this year. In our In Memoriam 7 efforts to make each event better than the one before, we changed a few things from 2011. Trivia 8 Thanks to the great support from Crowne Plaza and general manager Craig Poole, we held the Phledgling Phlockers 9 event on a Saturday Night for the first time. -

INFORMATION We all know that the Grand Ole Opry wanted nothing to do with rock 'n' roll, while the Louisiana Hayride gave national expo- sure to Elvis Presley, Johnny Horton, and others. Well, the Hayride wasn't alone. The Big 'D' Jamboree in Dallas started with Texas country music but embraced the new music, giving an all-important break to Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, and many, many more. In a nearly two-decade run that began in the aftermath of World War II, the Saturday night extravaganza packed the Spor- tatorium, a metal wrestling arena in a seedy neighborhood south of downtown. Broadcast locally on KRLD and nationally on CBS radio, the Jamboree was an exuberant cross-section of the most vibrant coun- try and rock 'n' roll music of the time, showcasing everyone from talented but largely forgotten singers such as Riley Crabtree, Orville Couch and Helen Hall to national figures, including Johnny Cash, Sonny James, Hank Locklin, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Wanda Jackson and Gene Vincent. -

1 a Conversation with Abigail Washburn by Frank
A Conversation with Abigail Washburn by Frank Goodman (9/2005, Puremusic.com) It’s curious in the arts, especially music, that success or notoriety can sometimes come more easily to those who started late, or never even planned to be an artist in the first place. But perhaps, by the time that music seriously enters their life, people they’ve met or other things that they’ve done or been interact with that late-breaking musical urge and catalytically convert it into something that works, takes shape or even wings. And so many who may have played the same instrument or sung or composed the same style of music all their lives may never have been rewarded, or at least noticed, for a life’s work. Timing, including the totality of what one brings to the table at that particular time, seems to be what matters. Or destiny, perhaps, if one believes in such a thing. By the time that musical destiny came knocking at Abigail Washburn’s door, her young life was already paved with diverse experiences. She’d gone abroad to China in her freshman year at college, and it changed her fundamentally. She became so interested in that culture and that tradition that it blossomed into a similar interest in her own culture when she returned, and she went deeply into the music of Doc Watson and other mountain music figures, into old time and clawhammer banjo music in particular. She’d sung extensively in choral groups already, so that came naturally. She was working as a lobbyist and living in Vermont, and had close friends who were a string band. -
Sir Douglas Quintet
Sir Douglas Quintet The Sir Douglas Quintet: Emerging from San Antonio‟s “West Side Sound,” The Sir Douglas Quintet blended rhythm and blues, country, rock, pop, and conjunto to create a unique musical concoction that gained international popularity in the 1960s and 1970s. From 1964 to 1972, the band recorded five albums in California and Texas, and, although its founder, Doug Sahm, released two additional albums under the same group name in the 1980s and 1990s, the Quintet never enjoyed the same domestic success as it had during the late 1960s. A big part of the Sir Douglas Quintet‟s distinctive sound derived from the unique musical environment in which its members were raised in San Antonio. During the 1950s and 1960s, the “moderate racial climate” and ethnically diverse culture of San Antonio—caused in part by the several desegregated military bases and the large Mexican-American population there—allowed for an eclectic cross- pollination of musical styles that reached across racial and class lines. As a result, Sahm and his musical friends helped create what came to be known as the “West Side Sound,” a dynamic blending of blues, rock, pop, country, conjunto, polka, R&B, and other regional and ethnic musical styles into a truly unique musical amalgamation. San Antonio-based artists, such as Augie Meyers, Doug Sahm, Flaco Jiménez, and Sunny Ozuna, would help to propel this sound onto the international stage. Born November 6, 1941, Douglas Wayne Sahm grew up on the predominately-black east side of San Antonio. As a child, he became proficient on a number of musical instruments and even turned down a spot on the Grand Ole Opry (while still in junior high school) in order to finish his education. -

Dave Pittman aka CoconutHead From 1995 to 2001, the band CoconutHead supplied the gulf coast panhandle with top-notch acoustic Jimmy Buffett music. Now based out of the upstate of South Carolina, Dave Pittman, the lead singer and acoustic guitar player, continues to perform solo as CoconutHead. CoconutHead is just what the parrot heads ordered! Playing a large selection of acoustic Jimmy Buffett tunes, Dave Pittman covers everything from the popular “Songs You Know By Heart” to the more obscure parrot head favorites. His song list includes music related to Jimmy Buffett such as In the Meantime, Chain of Love, and Suzannah by Buffett’s guitarist Peter Mayer, crowd favorite hits by Bob Marley such as No Woman, No Cry and Redemption Song, and the Eagles' Tequila Sunrise served up right along side Margaritaville. A long time parrot head himself, Dave Pittman knows exactly what Jimmy Buffett fans want: Acoustic performances with the intensity and freshness that Jimmy Buffett had when he started in the 1970’s. Let CoconutHead excite your crowd into a Feeding Frenzy with requests and audience sing-alongs.
