An Unexpected Encounter with Jimmy Buffett

So we walked down Main Street to the Long Wharf and sat on a bench overlooking the water, not too far from where he docks the Continental Drifter each summer.

Jimmy was quiet for a while. He seemed to be collecting his thoughts. I looked over at him and said, “Thanks for bringing “Fin-Land” to Jones Beach this year.” He laughed and said that ever since the Park Police loosened up a bit, Jones Beach has been one of his favorite venues. He always liked stage being out in the water; well, except for that one year when the storm tide flooded the backstage area ruining a lot of equipment.

We continued the conversation for a while, I didn’t take notes or record what we said, but from what I recall, the exchange went something like this;

JB: You may have heard that had a little mishap in Sidney.

MJ: Of course I did. You got a lot of people nervous. (He took off his ball cap and showed me the remnants of what had to have been a huge knot.)

JB: I’m back surfing so I’m doing fine. But you know, as we were flying over those war islands in the Pacific on the trip home, I came to realize that I’m getting too old for this. I’m retiring for touring after this summer. As much as I enjoy performing to 10’s of thousands of those crazy Parrot Heads, it’s time. Besides Jane, you are the first person I’ve told. Ramos doesn’t even know. Boy is he going to be pissed.

MJ: I thought that something was up. Your schedule seemed to be more ambitious that it’s been the past couple of years and you’re returning to a lot of cities that you haven’t visited in some time. Now I have a question... why are you telling me this?

JB: It’s simple. Who’s going to believe you? For years you’ve been writing these fictional facts and factual fictions stories on April Fools. Everyone will just think that this is one of those stories.

MJ: You’ve read those stories?

JB: Sure. You used to mail me a newsletter each month. At first I didn’t read them, but then you wrote that story about me replacing all of the Coral Reefers. It caused such a commotion that I thought I should pay more attention.

MJ: Fair enough. I find it hard to believe that you are retiring. Aren’t you going to miss performing?

JB: I didn’t say that I was going to retire from performing. I’m retiring from touring. Between the Beach Resorts in Pensacola and Hollywood, Florida, the Margaritaville Casino Resort in Biloxi, and all the Margaritaville Cafes, I’ll always have a place to sing and play and I figure with the resorts instead of me touring the country, Parrot Heads can come to the beach and see me.

MJ: For someone known for having “Beach-Bum” persona, its sounds like you’ve planned everything out.

JB: Being a beach bum is harder work than you think,

MJ: Of course it is.

JB: I’m not planning on making a big deal out of my retirement. There won’t be and big announcement and I’m not going to do one of those farewell tours. This way, if I change my mind, people won’t compare me to Brett Favre or, worse yet, Cher.

We spoke for a while longer, a little about the new (it could be released later this year in time for the Holidays) but mostly about the outlook for his Cubs and my Yankees. I also let him know, in no uncertain terms that I was still annoyed at him for doing that voodoo ceremony at Fenway Park in 2004 that “reversed the curse”.

At that point curiosity got the best of me, and channeling my inner Kramer I blurted out, “Did you really have to trademark the term “Tiger Blood”? Because I have to tell you, with all due respect, it seems to me with that move, you’ve jumped the Landshark.”

He just shrugged his shoulders, smiled and said, “It seemed like a good idea. Only time will tell.”

Then we said our good-byes. Jimmy headed over the bridge and returned home to write songs and I went back to the office. How was I going to explain why it took so long? I’ll just tell my boss that I had coffee with Jimmy Buffett, he’ll believe it ... yeah, yeah, that’s the ticket. METRO PARROTHEAD CLUB JACKETS ARE HERE !!!!

2011. AT 11:49 PM. 8.4 / 21 INC. HAPPY, HAPPY, JOY, JOY.

LITTLE MISS MAGIC, TAYLOR LEE.

TALES FROM MY BANK OF BAD HABITS

Well, I’m writing this article on March 28th and it’s 28 degrees, with another forecast for snow on April 1st, and that’s no fool’s joke. I’ve had it with this weather. We’re off to Florida on Monday for a week of fun in the sun, or so I hope.

With Jimmy Buffett planning on retiring from touring after this year, thank God we have a local Margaritaville at the Mohegan Sun Casino where we can see him. But until then, we can look forward to seeing him at Jones Beach this year, and the date is August 19th. Our ticket liaison, Tom Dalton, will give you all the ticket details. We’ll also kick off the start of Metro’s 20th anniversary at Jones Beach this year, and it will be a yearlong celebration.

Although we thought we would take a major break from organizing the Jim Morris event in Bridgeport this year, it appears that we are still right in the middle of it. What does this mean? Well, it should be a great two day event, of course. You will find an ad and ticket order forms in this newsletter. More information is available at www.metromorris.com. Carol and I hope to see all of you there. We still have a few tickets left for Friday night, so don’t delay, get your ticket order in now.

Don’t forget, the road cleanup is April 16th, Joe Lombardi will announce all the details.

One last item; Since I announced my intentions last November to retire as Metro’s president this year, I’ve had many many members request that I reconsider. I have, and I’ve decided to serve for another year. That is, unless the uprisings in Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Syria and Bahrain take hold here in our metro area, but let me just say that I am not afraid of your coalition air force. Seriously, it has been a true honor to be your president for the past three years and I am looking forward to celebrating our club’s 20th with all of you.

Tiki Bar #7

I would like to welcome you to my Tiki Bar where I had a wonderful conversation with TropRock great Sunny Jim. James White was kind enough to answer several questions during our conversation so I thought that you might be interested in what he had to say.

1. What is your favorite drink?

Dark rum...With Coke, over ice, or neat, or in any kind of mixed drink.

2. If I looked into your CD collection what artists would I find?

A very weird collection. Let me look for a sec.. In no particular order... Buffett, , Harry Nilsson, Lord Kitchner, Sheryl Crow, Tom Waits, Club Trini, BB King, Bob Marley, Harry Connick, Nick Lowe, Rod Stewart, The Bird and the Bee, Johnny Clegg, Buster Poindexter (!), Chris Issac Bob Dylan, Zap Mamma, some classical music, James Taylor, NRBQ, Dave Edmonds, , Bonnie Raitt, Muddy Waters, Arrow, Howlin Wolf, Ry Cooder, David Lindley, Jackson Brown, ALL THE TROPROCKERS, Barefoot Man, , Will Kimbrough, Beatles, Randy Newman, and on and on. I even listen to my own Cds every once in a while, to check on how I did...

3. How many instruments do you play?

I play guitar, bass, mandolin, , any keyboards, steel drum, and percussion things. I'm working on drums. I own all these instruments (except a banjo!) and have a growing collection of percussion toys. I've played almost everything you hear on my records.

4. Did you have any formal training?

Not really. I had about six months of piano as a kid. My mom trading babysitting for lessons, and a month of guitar when I was about 20. It seems we found out that I knew more than the teacher... We were in a band together later.

5. At what age did you realize that you wanted to play TropRock music?

I guess I would have been about 32 or so and living in Grand Cayman... It was just a natural... I'd been making my living at music for about 10 years by then, and wanted to stay in Cayman, so I started learning steel drum. My songs were influenced by living in the tropics, and still are.

6. Who do you enjoy playing with?

Everyone! I love to be a side man, which is why I love doing Six String Music in as well as my Blue Heaven show and now the Charlotte Harbor PHC Songwriter show, too. I get to play along with everyone. I'd love to produce someone else's record some time...

7. My wife, Marianne & I love to see you play on the roof @ Blue Heaven. Is it as much fun for you as it is for us?

No, it's probably more fun for me. lol I get to see all my friends, both on stage and off, and get to play and sing all afternoon. Definitely, I have the better deal!

8. Where is your favorite vacation spot?

Hanging out with my pal Captain Phil Jones in the Grenadines (Caribbean). Canuaan, Bequia, Grand Cayman (so many old friends there)

9. We have seen flying monkeys when you sing "Monkey", when & where did that start?

I wrote the song in about ten minutes, and just thought it was a fun little goofy song. People started bringing monkeys and throwing them, most likely in response to people throwing rubber chickens when I would play with Jim Morris (his "Slice of the Island Life" song..). Now it's grown into its own thing, and it's still fun. I'm amazed at how much fun grown up people have with it!

10. Besides Holly do you have any other children?

Lol It's HALLIE, and she is a TWIN. Her sister is Katie. They're art students now at Ringling College of Art and Design. H wants to do computer animation, Katie is an illustrator. They've both very talented and we're SO proud of 'em. Hallie made me change that song title so people wouldn't call her Holly. That's why I had to laugh at this question!

11. Are they in any other songs then "Hallie (Holly

Let Your Heart Go"? Oh Yeah! "Mermaids" (Tropical Trader) was written about them growing up in the islands, they sing on the "Tropical Shirt Song" and you can hear them say, "Yea! No more pushing!" at the end of the Bondo Kings song. Gotta turn that one up though..

12. If you had not become a musician what would you have done for a living?

I had planned on teaching elementary school, and it's what I studied in college. I have a BA in Liberal Arts, and was having too much fun doing music to teach (in the traditional sense..).

13. Do you have a favorite TV show?

Umm, CBS Sunday Morning.. I'm not really much of a TV show person. Adela, used to be a news reporter for CBS in Houston, is the big TV person in our house.

14. What is your favorite movie?

Perhaps Master and Commander".

15. Name one thing about yourself that would shock your fans?

I missed being an All American College swimmer by 9/100ths of a second in the 200 butterfly? Not too shocking, but who would know? Another funny thing is that my daughters got me hooked on World of Warcraft, and I used to do that with them a lot. It's addicting! Shocking!

16. Your songs are so beautiful, do they all come from personnel experiences?

Thanks for the compliment! A lot of them do come from experience, and a lot come from taking my experience and imagining myself somewhere or in someone's shoes. Some times it's work to finish them, and sometimes they just pop out really fast. It's a cool process, either way, and I love doing it.

17. Where do you write most of your songs?

I get ideas all the time, all day and night. I work on them in my "studio" (converted garage...). That's where I have my recording set up. I've recorded all my own CDs since "Sandbar Serenade" at home. Only the first two were done in someone else's studio. I love the process and the technology of it.

18. How does your family feel about having a Super TropRock Star living with them?

LOL Three minutes ago Hallie said, "Dad, can you take out the garbage while I clean the ferrets cage?". I get no respect. Really, Adela is proud of what I've done, and the girls have grown up with it so they don't think much about me doing music. Just another day.

19. What is your favorite mode of transportation?

Hands down, sailboat. It's slow, sure, but it's the trip as much as the destination. I love bicycles, and am getting back into that lately. I love travel in any form. If I didn't, it would be hard to do what I do.

20. What do you credit 21 years of marriage to (other than having the perfect wife)?

I guess seeing my own parents together nearly 50 years until my mother’s passing in 1999 of Alzheimer’s. Seeing the commitment they had made me want to do the same. Having kids and being committed to them is a big part of it, too. I don't know about that perfect wife part though! lol

Al- Thanks for this opportunity. I'm honored to be a part of this cool and caring community that is Trop Rock and Parrothead-ism. My Cd "KISS" is doing well, and I'm anxious to start up on the next CD already. I hope our paths cross before Key West!

Each month I will invite a special guest to Tiki Bar #7, I hope that you will join us. Well, that’s all until next month, Al : - )

18th Annual Family Picnic

Where: Fresh Pond Park, Amagansett, NY

What Time: 10 AM - Dusk (or whenever the mosquitos arrive)

The park’s been reserved for our ... the weather will be there. We’re looking for a volunteer(s) to help organize the picnic. Being Parrot Heads, perhaps “organize” is not quite the proper term, but you know what we mean. In the past, the Club will provide, burgers, hot dogs, corn-on-the-cob and soft drinks. Who ever volunteers to oversee the picnic will have to purchase the basics (the Club will reimburse you). Everyone who attends is usually really good about to provide a dish or something to share, so there’s always plenty of food.

Anyone who wishes to volunteers can contact Joe Lombardi, Ralph Wotruba or Ray Leudesdorff.

Wounded Warriors Need Our Help!

Soldier Ride - The Hamptons takes place on July 23, 2011 (the same day as the METRO Family Picnic. For the past two years, our Club has staffed the water station at Cyril’s.

For those of you who may not know, Soldier Ride is a fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project. Participants get to bike the course along with wounded veteran's from the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. The cause is a favorite of Jimmy Buffett's and he's supports the efforts both up here and down in Key West (there’s a ride from Miami to Key West each January).

Once again, we'll be setting up near Cyril's on the Napeague stretch. Just a short walk across Montauk Highway for the bar known for some of the best frozen drinks in The Hamptons. A community service event at a bar, it's what Parrot Heads do best.

All kidding aside, we can certainly sacrifice a few hour of picnic time in order to help those men and women who sacrificed a great deal more.

Anyone interested in participating in the Soldier Ride Event can mail Joe Lombardi at [email protected]

I wanted to share some photos with you.

I am a manager at Trader Joes. I have been working at the Commack NY location for the past 5 months or so. Prior to that I was a manager at the Lake Grove location. Lake Grove relocated to a new store sometime in January and I was happy to be asked to help getting the new location open as well as be there for the grand opening. It was great to see the brand new store with all new fixtures and custom artwork which is a trademark for all the Trader Joe's. I was very surprised and honored to see my SUV in one of the murals on the wall. This email has pics of mural.

I will enclose pictures of my truck done up for the last Jones Beach show in a separate email. I thought it was great that they included the METROPHC.COM that was on my hood guard.

ENJOY!

Jimmy Performs at Key West Wedding

On Saturday evening Jimmy Buffett performed at a wedding in Key West:

Buffett walked barefooted onto the small stage at the private Sugarloaf Key home of dentist Fred Troxel, who a few hours earlier had exchanged nuptials with Key Wester Rita Brown; Buffett and Brown have long known each other. He then belted out Van Morrison’s “” and the Rolling Stones classic “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” For his finale, Buffett sang his own “Margaritaville,” with some changes in lyrics to cater to the occasion.

Buffett showed no signs of effects from the sudden five-foot fall he took when finishing up a Jan. 26 concert in Australia. He was hospitalized for a brief period before being released Jan. 27, but had to cancel a scheduled concert in New Zealand to recover from injuries.

He mentioned the tumble to the audience of about 300 wedding guests, saying it was the first time he had performed before any group since the incident.

Thank you to all that participated in Fins & Pins Bowling Fundraiser on March 19th.

We raised $1500 for the Down's Syndrome Advocacy Foundation.

Thank you to Stella (Donna), Peter, Robert and Gary for selling the Raffles. Also, to Ralph, Bruce and Gary for their support. Congratulations to Ralph/Kathy for winning the Adirondack Landshark chair and congrats to all of our trophy, 50-50, Bowling Bingo and raffle winners! Thank you also to the many generous people that donated baskets which made our event a success, including the Martiellos, Elinbogens, JoeLombardi and anyone else we might be forgetting. Again, thank you to all Metros that came out and supported our event. We hope you had as much fun as we did!

March 16,2011 Metro Parrot Head Club

Dear Members of the Metro Parrot Head Club:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the Metro Parrot Head Club who so generously donated about two hundred toys to St. Ignatius Human Services. There is a large and growing population of impoverished people who live "under the radar" who depend on the food, clothes and other items that are donated by organizations like yours. Please know that these toys will go to deserving children in the throughout the community. Our fiscal year begins each September. So far, over the past six months we assisted 3,273 persons!! And-again-that's just within the parish boundaries!! With the current spike in energy costs and the current waves of job losses, we expect the need to continue at this level for the foreseeable future, and we greatly appreciate your involvement in addressing the needs of the less fortunate members of the community. St. Ignatius Human Services helps to make sure that these people are clothed and have enough to eat, and-with your donation of these toys-that their children will be assured of birthday presents that otherwise could not be afforded. Your donation of toys at this time is a blessing from God that helps to make difficult lives a little easier. Again, thank you Parrot Heads, our heartfelt thanks go to all of you.

God bless you. Joe Samodulski Director
