Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements note

The Rinzler Archives is continually engaged in digitization of archival materials to facilitate preservation and ready access by users. However, given the diversity of legacy formats of the originals, some older materials may not be available. Notably, certain older audio recordings cannot be played because of deterioration of the tape stock, and the Archives has no playback equipment for EIAJ-1 videoreels (1/2 inch) or multi-track audio recordings. Users are encouraged to contact Archives staff to verify that the materials of interest to them are already accessible, or to determine if they can be digitized as needed.

Introduction

The 2008 Festival, as in previous years, brought together exemplary practitioners of diverse traditions from communities across the and around the world. The ongoing goal of the Festival is to encourage the vitality of these traditions by presenting them on the National Mall so that tradition-bearers and the public can learn from one another and understand cultural differences in a respectful way. The 2008 Festival celebrated Bhutan's approach to life in the twenty-first century, which it calls the pursuit of "Gross National Happiness." The Bhutanese have chosen a unique path to development, rooted in deep respect for and protection of the kingdom's cultural and natural resources. The 2008 Festival program coincided with Bhutan's centennial celebration of the monarchy and implementation of the country's new democratic constitution. It emphasized the kingdom's protection of culture, community, and environment and was the largest and most comprehensive living exhibition of Bhutanese culture and traditions ever presented outside of the kingdom. Through craft and cooking demonstrations, dance and musical performances, and interactive discussions, the 2008 Festival explored the linkages between Bhutan's natural and cultural resources. On the occasion of NASA's fiftieth anniversary, the 2008 Festival explored the spirit of innovation, discovery, and service embodied by the agency and its personnel. The program encouraged visitors to participate actively - to ask questions of the roughly one hundred participants who came to Washington from across the United States to represent a cross section of NASA's 18,000 employees and 40,000 contractors and grantees. NASA: Fifty Years and Beyond showcased the role that the men and women of NASA have played in broadening the horizons of American science and culture, as well as the role that they will continue to play in helping to shape the future by stirring the public imagination. Texas: A Celebration of Music, Food, and Wine focused on the rich heritage of these cultural traditions from every region of the Lone Star State. The sounds of Texas , swing, conjunto, country and western, gospel, and were a sonic reminder of the state's breathtaking diversity. Texas's culinary traditions - from barbeque to kolache (pastry) making, from chicken-fried steak to Vietnamese specialties - made for an eye-opening and mouth-watering demonstration of the state's regional vastness and cultural range. An exhibit on Texas wine making explored the craft, skills, and terroir of the state's industry. The 2008 Ralph Rinzler Memorial Concert honored one of Ralph's long-term collaborators, René López, a music aficionado and cultural activist from New York's Puerto Rican community. The 2008 Festival took place for two five-day weeks (June 25-29 and July 2-6) between Madison Drive and Jefferson Drive and between 9th Street and 14th Street, south of the National Museum of American History and the National Museum of Natural History (see site plan). It featured three programs and the Rinzler Concert. The 2008 Program Book included schedules and participant lists for each program; keynote essays and short features provided background on each of the programs. The Festival was co-presented by the Smithsonian Institution and National Park Service and organized by the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage.

Series 2: Bhutan: Land of the Thunder Dragon

Introduction: The Bhutan program at the 2008 Festival was the largest and most comprehensive celebration of Bhutanese life and culture ever presented outside of the kingdom. One hundred and fifty Bhutanese participants provided Festival visitors an unparalleled opportunity to see, hear, touch, smell, and experience life in the "Land of the Thunder Dragon." The program started each Festival morning with an elaborate ceremonial procession to honor important guests. Accompanied by blaring monastic trumpets and framed by the U.S. Capitol, Washington Monument, and dozens of fluttering colorful prayer flags, the Bhutanese participants proceeded to the Bhutanese temple, where each day they recognized the chief guests. Festival audiences enjoyed Bhutanese music and dance, arts and crafts, spiritual and religious traditions, traditional medicine, food, storytelling, and recreational activities. Every day, live reports were sent to Bhutan to broadcast on Bhutan's national television station. Bhutan's thirteen traditional arts were presented in a shaded area near the temple, where visitors could mingle with some of the country's finest weavers, painters, sculptors, carvers, cooks, and other artists. Under the trees, visitors also encountered an ancient box of many doors representing the Buddha's understanding of the many paths to enlightenment and a chanter who called people to ponder the box's mysteries. Traditional yak herders from the highlands welcomed guests into their yak-hair tent and entertained them with stories and lively antics. Nearby, some of Bhutan's best cooks shared their stories about food in Bhutan around a traditional clay stove. Practitioners of Bhutanese traditional medicine also shared ancient Buddhist teachings and their knowledge of the many natural compounds found in Bhutan's flora and fauna. The Four Friends Stage, named after a Bhutanese tale that celebrates social and environmental harmony, was the gathering place for lively discussions about traditions and contemporary issues, including Bhutan's voluntary transition from absolute monarchy to democracy, the meaning of "Gross National Happiness" (an official government policy articulated by Bhutan's Fourth King), and the importance of environmental and cultural resources. The Tsechu Stage was the venue for Bhutanese music and dance traditions. Musicians, singers, and dancers from Bhutan's Royal Academy of Performing Arts demonstrated traditional Bhutanese folk dances, and Bhutanese monastic dancers performed sacred masked dances rarely seen outside of Bhutan. Bhutanese hospitality was evident in the many activities designed for children and adults. With the help of Bhutanese children, families colored Bhutanese postage stamps and made prayer wheels. Archery, the country's national sport, was played daily. Bhutanese archers dazzled spectators by hitting a target the size of a breadbox nearly a football field away. His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck was Head of the Bhutan Delegation. Dorjee Tshering, Richard Kennedy, and Preston Scott constituted the Curatorial Team; while Damcho Rinzin and Arlene Reiniger were Program Coordinators. The Bhutan Curatorial/ Production Committee included: Dorjee Tshering, Damcho Rinzin, Dorji Wangchuk, Dorji Wangchuk, Dorji Yangki, Lopen Gyeltshen, Jigme Cholen Yezer, Karma Dukpa, Phuntsok Tashi, Phurba Dorji, Sangay Wangchug, Singye Dorji, Singye Wangmo, Sonam Choden, Thinley Gyamtsho, and Thinley Wangchuk. The program was produced in partnership with the Royal Government of Bhutan. Major Donors to the program were the Bhutan Department of Tourism and the Dancing Star Foundation. Donors included the Bhutan Foundation and an anonymous donor. Contributors to the program were the Frank W. Hoch Trust, the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation, Lawrence Small, and the Summit Fund of Washington. Additional support was provided

Series 3: NASA: Fifty Years and Beyond

Introduction: NASA: Fifty Years and Beyond represented an unusual collaboration between the Festival and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on the occasion of the agency's fiftieth anniversary in 2008. The NASA program provided a rare opportunity for the public to meet and observe the men and women whose skills, specialized knowledge, and codes of behavior mark them as a very distinctive example of occupational culture. The tents on the Mall featured the following: Aeronautics: air traffic-control designers, flight photographers and videographers, model makers, flight-suit technicians, test pilots, and others conducting research on aviation and aircraft; Earth science: archaeologists, atmospheric scientists, meteorologists, plant pathologists, satellite imagery analysts, and others who investigate the earth's surface, climate, and atmosphere; Foodways: food scientists, nutrition experts, packaging engineers, and researchers who plan and develop the cuisine served onboard spacecraft; Future missions: aerospace engineers, robotics engineers, solar scientists, program managers, and others helping to plan missions to the moon, Mars, and beyond; Human space flight: , flight engineers, tile inspectors, microgravity experts, software engineers, solar array specialists, space-suit technicians, and others who are involved with the Space Shuttle and International Space Station; Propulsion: mechanical engineers, operations managers, test systems engineers, and others who design and build the engines that power NASA spacecraft; Space art: artists who use canvas, paper, and recycled materials (such as Shuttle tires) to document NASA's work and missions; and Space science: astrobiologists, astromaterials curators, astronomers, astrophysicists, heliophysicists, planetary geologists, and others conducting research in the vast reaches of space. In addition, one tent was devoted to collecting oral histories, not only from the NASA participants, but also from members of the general public, to record their memories of NASA's past as well as their visions for NASA's future. During the ten days of the Festival, roughly 300 recordings were logged and another 200 note cards were posted on the bulletin board. James Deutsch was Program Curator and Dorey Butter was Program Coordinator; Kim Stryker was Family Activities Coordinator. The NASA Coordination Team included: Gale Allen, Beth Beck, Claudette Beggs, Luis Berrios, Rosalie Betrue, Sallie Bilbo, Dawn Brooks, Stacey Brooks, Beth Brown, Fred Brown, Joshua Buck, Todd Cannon, Tara Clopper, Carmel Conaty, Leslee Cork, Anita Davis, David Defelice, Steve Dick, Wanda Dockery, Kristen Erickson, Michelle Ferebee, Debbie Gallaway, Steve Garber, Elaine Gause, Ed Goldstein, Mary Ann Harness, Robert Hopkins, Jim Hull, Winnie Humberson, Cheryl Johnson, Michelle Jones, Dave Lavery, Laura Lewis, Steve Lighthill, Rocky Lind, Dan Lockney, Bonnie McClain, Linda Matthews-Schmidt, Bryon Maynard, Cheri Miller, Ruth Netting, Nora Normandy, Louis Parker, Tom Powers, Debbie Rivera, Carla Rosenberg, Karen Rugg, Bette Siegel, Mary Sladek, Tony Springer, Pam Steel, Jim Stofan, Ann Marie Trotta, Janelle Turner, Bert Ulrich, Erika Vick, Katie Veal Wallace, Derek Wang, Joey Williams, and Dan Woodard.

Series 4: Special Events

Introduction: The annual Ralph Rinzler Memorial Concert celebrates Ralph's mind and spirit, his untiring and wide-ranging cultural work, his all-encompassing humanity, his commitment to traditional musicians and artisans, and his never-ending will to increase and diffuse knowledge in support of cultural democracy. The 2008 concert honored New York City's René López, a grassroots cultural activist, lay scholar, educator, collector, and music producer. René was among Ralph Rinzler's special friends and colleagues in many ground-breaking field research projects and musical endeavors. Both were keen on research, documentation, and respectful presentation of musicians and their genres and on the importance of disseminating grassroots arts and traditions to diverse audiences across the world. Their collegiality led to years of Smithsonian performances, archival documentation, recordings, and public programs. Grupo Folklórico y Experimental Nuevayorquino, one of numerous culture and advocacy projects that René López gave birth to, became legendary after its founding in 1974 for experimental recordings that brought together some of the most gifted, often little-noticed elder composer-musicians (with deep connections to Puerto Rican and other Caribbean and Latin American communities and audiences) with some of the brightest young musicians, who would go on to master traditional musical genres, become major innovators in various Latino and other musical genres, and continue to explicitly identify themselves and their art as grounded in traditional, community-based music and participation. Performing at the Rinzler Concert for only the second time in thirty years (the reunion concert was in Berlin, Germany, last fall), Grupo was joined by renowned Cuban drummer, community leader, and Afro-Cuban priest Orlando "Puntilla" Ríos, who died a few weeks later in New York on August 12. James Counts Early and René López were Curatorial Advisors and Rebecca Smerling Marcus was Coordinator. Joan López and James Counts Early were Presenters. Series 5: Texas: A Celebration of Music, Food, and Wine

Introduction: Some 120 of Texas's best musicians, dancers, singers, cooks, and winemakers came to Washington for the 2008 Festival's celebration of the Lone Star State. Winemakers, sommeliers, viticulturists, and others gave visitors a look behind the scenes at the fascinating but largely unknown world of Texas wine. The vast state has been blessed with dozens of microclimates, many closely mimicking the more famous microclimates of France and Spain. While most people know that Texas is BIG, few understand the variety of climates the state has to offer. Despite visitors' disappointment that wine could not be sampled on National Park Service grounds, a sensory station was set up to educate people on what they could learn from the scents wine produces. The food demonstration area offered visitors an illustrated symposium on the diversity of Texas cultures. Vietnamese, Polish, African American, Tex-Mex, cowboy, and Czech traditions were shared, along with barbecue, home canning, and more. But most interesting were the ways that traditions crossed cultural lines. Take chicken fried steak, for instance: early German and Austrian settlers brought recipes for Wiener schnitzel and "texafied" it as they became more Texan. There are hundreds of examples of foods in Texas born of neighbors from different cultures sharing and adapting traditions. This is still happening today and made for rich conversations in the Lone Star Kitchen. The unique flavor of the Texas singer-songwriter tradition was also on display. Texas musical icons were in abundance, among them Joe Ely, Joel Guzman, Guy Clark, Verlon Thompson, Terri Hendrix, Lloyd Maines, CJ Chenier, Little Joe y la Familia, Marcia Ball, Los Texmaniacs, and Asleep at the Wheel. They performed, delivered workshops, and spoke about their inspirations and what makes Texas the perfect environment for music making. Songs were sung in English, Spanish, Polish, Czech, and many a combination of the above. Sacred music is also an essential part of the Texas ethos. The Original Soul Invaders and the Jones Family Singers shared this moving tradition with appreciative audiences. Dance was not forgotten; it was, after all, a program about Texas where mere listening is unacceptable. Texans get up and move when they hear music. Texas dancers gamely ignored the sweltering Washington heat to show visitors how to dance to zydeco, Cajun, mariachi, blues, western swing, conjunto, polka of all varieties, cowboy music, and more. Pat Jasper was Curator and Dawn Orsak was Foodways and Wine Curatorial Consultant; Amanda Pike served as Program Coordinator. The program was produced in partnership with the Texas Office of the Governor, Economic Development and Tourism. The Major Donor to the program was the Texas Commission on the Arts. Contributors to the program included the Texas Department of Agriculture, the City of El Paso, Houston Endowment Inc., the Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the City of San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs. Additional support was provided by the Music Performance Fund, with major in-kind support provided by Southwest Airlines.
