  • By Jason Cohen
There and Back Again Jan 2017 – by Jason Cohen In 1962 Terry Allen left Lubbock to pursue what he couldn’t imagine ever happening in his hometown: a life as an artist. More than fifty years later, the sculptor, painter, playwright, and musician behind Juarez and Lubbock (On Everything) is ready for a return. Terry Allen, photographed in Austin, in November 2016. Photograph by Leann Mueller The guide leading incoming freshmen around Texas Tech University on the first Saturday of 2016’s college- football season didn’t look as though he’d been on campus longer than one academic year himself, but he had his patter down. As the group moved from the library to the student union, he pointed out a work commissioned by the school’s public art program and installed in 2003: a hominid-like bronze figure cast entirely from books. While all the students call it “Bookman,” the sculpture’s formal title is a play on the university’s Red Raiders nickname: Read Reader. And there’s a second pun in Bookman’s anatomical construction. “His spine is made out of actual book spines,” the guide observed, before offering his own interpretation of the work. “He’s running to the library to cram for his test. But he’s probably going to fail, because he’s reading a website.” What the collegiate docent didn’t mention was the sculptor, a not-insignificant omission. Bookman sprung from the mind and hands of Lubbock native and one-semester Texas Tech dropout Terry Allen, who is arguably the first of Lubbock’s legendary post-hippie semi-country singer-songwriters.

  • THIRTY YEARS 1990-Present It Is Nearly Impossible To
OREO BLUE – THIRTY YEARS 1990-Present It is nearly impossible to sum up thirty years of Oreo Blue in one statement. However, one word comes to mind: Perseverance. In 1990, Brian Crowne had a vision to form a relevant blues-rooted band and he had the work ethic to drive the band through a multitude of personnel changes and musical market fluctuations to reach that goal. Hailing from the industrial- manufacturing city of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Brian had been influenced early on by The Blues Brothers following their hit movie in 1980. “I saw the Blues Brothers in the early 80s and the music really intrigued me and I liked the horns in the band,” Crowne says. He quickly took to the saxophone, learning to play, without any musical training. “I had to go back and teach myself how to read music. What I would do is read it and remember it and I had it memorized and faked my way into being in a big band.” Brian teamed up with local Brian Crowne University of Arkansas African- American vocal music major, Billy Rigsby, schoolmate and bassist, Rod Williamson and guitarist friend, Bryan Martin. The mix of black and white players in the band formed a visual for what they believed to be the coming together of African-American blues Rod Williamson rooted music and "blue-eyed" soul music that was being leveraged by white rock and blues bands such as the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and, of course, The Blues Brothers more specifically. The name of the band might have started as a tongue-and-cheek pun on the blended genre, but Oreo (like the cookie...black and white together) and Blue (like the color, but more so, the genre of the Blues) stuck together as Oreo Blue and helped summarize a racial harmony in music celebrating all contributions.

  • “The Stories Behind the Songs”
“The Stories Behind The Songs” John Henderson The Stories Behind The Songs A compilation of “inside stories” behind classic country hits and the artists associated with them John Debbie & John By John Henderson (Arrangement by Debbie Henderson) A fascinating and entertaining look at the life and recording efforts of some of country music’s most talented singers and songwriters 1 Author’s Note My background in country music started before I even reached grade school. I was four years old when my uncle, Jack Henderson, the program director of 50,000 watt KCUL-AM in Fort Worth/Dallas, came to visit my family in 1959. He brought me around one hundred and fifty 45 RPM records from his station (duplicate copies that they no longer needed) and a small record player that played only 45s (not albums). I played those records day and night, completely wore them out. From that point, I wanted to be a disc jockey. But instead of going for the usual “comedic” approach most DJs took, I tried to be more informative by dropping in tidbits of a song’s background, something that always fascinated me. Originally with my “Classic Country Music Stories” site on Facebook (which is still going strong), and now with this book, I can tell the whole story, something that time restraints on radio wouldn’t allow. I began deejaying as a career at the age of sixteen in 1971, most notably at Nashville’s WENO-AM and WKDA- AM, Lakeland, Florida’s WPCV-FM (past winner of the “Radio Station of the Year” award from the Country Music Association), and Springfield, Missouri’s KTTS AM & FM and KWTO-AM, but with syndication and automation which overwhelmed radio some twenty-five years ago, my final DJ position ended in 1992.
