Stuhl .............. 525Ð530 Circolo Medievistico Romano ........... 531Ð532 Anzeigen und Besprechungen ........... 533Ð742 QFIAB 84 (2004) DEUTSCHES HISTORISCHES INSTITUT IN ROM Jahresbericht 2003 Das römische Forschungsinstitut blickt auf ein Jahr reichen wis- senschaftlichen Ertrags zurück: drei langjährige wissenschaftliche Projekte stehen kurz vor der Vollendung bzw. konnten zum Abschluß gebracht werden, zwei neue wissenschaftliche Projekte wurden in An- griff genommen. Eine beachtliche Steigerung erfuhr die Zahl der wis- senschaftlichen Veranstaltungen. Möglich wurde dies nicht zuletzt durch vielfache Kooperationen mit Partnern in Rom und außerhalb. Die wissenschaftliche Nachwuchsarbeit wurde über die bewährten Formen hinaus durch ein ab Frühjahr 2003 durchgängig angebotenes Praktikantenprogramm erweitert. Zur Jahressitzung des wissenschaftlichen Beirats traten am 24. Februar zusammen die Mitglieder Proff. Rudolf Schieffer (Vorsitz), Christof Dipper, Hagen Keller, Wolfgang Reinhard, Ludwig Schmugge, Brigide Schwarz, Volker Sellin, der amtierende Institutsdirektor Prof. Michael Matheus sowie sein Stellvertreter, Dr. Alexander Koller, der ehemalige Institutsdirektor Prof. Arnold Esch, für das Ministerium der Leiter der Geschäftsstelle der Stiftung Deutsche Geisteswissen- schaftliche Institute im Ausland (D.G.I.A.), Joachim D. Weber, als Ver- treter der wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiter Dr. Martin Bertram und Dr. Lutz Klinkhammer, für den Personalrat Frau Elisabeth Dunkl sowie als Gäste die Direktoren der Institute in Paris, London und Warschau, Proff. Werner Paravicini, Hagen Schulze und Klaus Ziemer. Zum neuen Vorsitzenden des wissenschaftlichen Beirats wurde nominiert: Prof. Christof Dipper; zu seinem Stellvertreter Prof. Ludwig Schmugge. Als neue Mitglieder des wissenschaftlichen Beirats wur- den vorgeschlagen Frau Prof. Silke Leopold sowie die Proff. Theo Kölzer, Volker Reinhardt, Stefan Weinfurter und Hubert Wolf. Die Vor- schläge hat der Stiftungsrat in seiner Sitzung am 19. Mai bestätigt. Die Sitzung des Beirats fand, dem bisher üblichen Rhythmus entspre- QFIAB 84 (2004) VIII JAHRESBERICHT 2003 chend, in München statt. Künftig werden die Beiratsmitglieder jähr- lich auch deshalb nach Rom geladen, um eine intensivere Beratung von Institutsprojekten mit den jeweiligen Mitarbeitern zu ermögli- chen. Das gesamte Jahr wurde weiterhin bestimmt von der Entwick- lung der Strukturen der Stiftung D.G.I.A. Mit der Verabschiedung der Satzung und der Haushalts- und Verfahrensordnung sowie mit der Wahl von Prof. Wolfgang Schieder zum Stiftungsratsvorsitzenden und Prof. Hanna Vollrath zur Stellvertretenden Vorsitzenden wurden 2003 wichtige inhaltliche und personelle Entscheidungen getroffen. Sie las- sen eine weiterhin positive Entwicklung aller Institute, unterstützt durch die Bonner Geschäftsstelle, erhoffen. An den Regeln vertrau- ensvoller Zusammenarbeit gilt es freilich weiter zu arbeiten. Am 21. Januar 2003 verstarb die ehemalige Chefsekretärin des DHI, Frau Dott.ssa Liliana Piu. Sie hat 20 Jahre lang dem Institut treu und zuverlässig gedient. Am 7. April 2003 hielt der neue Direktor seine „Antrittsvorle- sung“: „Rom und Mainz. Italienische und deutsche Universitäten im 15. und beginnenden 16. Jh.“ Grußworte sprachen Prof. Wolfgang Schieder als Vorsitzender des Stiftungsrats der Stiftung D.G.I.A., Mini- sterialdirektor Dr. Uwe Bake für das BMBF sowie Prof. Christof Dip- per als Vorsitzender des Wissenschaftlichen Beirats des DHI in Rom. Im Jahr 1953 wurde am 30. Oktober das DHI in Rom feierlich wiedereröffnet, nachdem sein Schicksal wie das der anderen wissen- schaftlichen deutschen Institute und ihrer Bibliotheken in Italien seit 1943 ungewiß war. An einer vom DHI organisierten Tagung über die „Deutschen Forschungs- und Kulturinstitute in Rom in der Nach- kriegszeit“ vom 29. bis 31. Oktober beteiligten sich alle in den Nach- kriegsjahren wiedereröffneten oder neugegründeten wissenschaftli- chen und kulturellen deutschen römischen Einrichtungen. Der Tagungsband wird ein aufschlussreiches Kapitel der Wissenschaftsge- schichte und Kulturpolitik beleuchten und signalisiert zugleich das Interesse des Instituts an Forschungen zur Zeit nach 1945. Dieses Jahr schieden zwei langjährige Institutsmitglieder, Frau Dipl.-Bibl. Gabriele Lehmann-Brockhaus und Dr. Martin Bertram, aus dem aktiven Dienst. Ihnen verdankt das DHI besonders viel. Mit dem Ausscheiden von Dr. Martin Bertram verliert das Institut im wissen- QFIAB 84 (2004) JAHRESBERICHT 2003 IX schaftlichen Bereich eine seiner bewährtesten Kräfte. Im Rahmen der im März 2003 maßgeblich von ihm organisierten Tagung zum Kirchen- recht im 14. und 15. Jh. (vgl. S. XXVIII) wurden seine wissenschaftli- chen Verdienste gewürdigt. Der Unterzeichnete wurde zum Mitglied im Comitato Direttivo des Istituto storico italo-germanico in Trento gewählt. Er wurde fer- ner Mitglied des Comitato Nazionale sowie der Giunta Scientifica für die wissenschaftlichen Projekte im Rahmen des VIII∞ Centenario della morte di Bonifacio VIII. Weiterhin erfolgte die Ernennung zum Mit- glied des Comitato Scientifico europeo für das Projekt Via Franci- gena. Für die Arenberg-Stiftung im Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft wurde er zum wissenschaftlichen Berater berufen. Dr. Lutz Klinkhammer wurde für eine Untersuchungskommission des ita- lienischen Parlaments und Senats, die die Gründe für die Niederschla- gung von Ermittlungsverfahren wegen Kriegsverbrechen

Lastly, I am greatly indebted to my long-suffering wife, Marjolaine, who has given me unbounded encouragement and inspiration every step of the way. 3 Abstract Political Storytelling and Propaganda: William Prynne and the English Afterlife of Tommaso Campanella Although there has been extensive scholarship on the pamphleteering practices and political activities of the dissident moralist and lawyer William Prynne, scant material exists on the narrative mechanism underlying Prynne’s persuasive storytelling. This dissertation argues that Prynne was the source of the literary archetype concerning the ‘Jesuit’ Tommaso Campanella diffused during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The ideas of the Italian Dominican Campanella (1568-1639) had a certain impact on the philosophical, theological and political panorama of early modern England. The study of this impact is an area that is still largely unexplored. Using Prynne’s apocryphal Campanella as an interpretative lens, my dissertation compares and analyses the anti-Catholic myths elaborated by Prynne and proposes that he devised a fictional Campanella in tandem with his exposition of the fictitious plots of Adam Contzen, Cardinal Armand Richelieu, and Robert Parsons.

Hunt ABSTRACT: Wagering on the papal election was a popular pastime among all levels of society in sixteenth-century Rome. Brokers and their clients kept well-informed of the election taking place within the closed doors of the con- clave. Consequently, wagering on the election proved to be a source of disruption since—intentionally or not—it begat rumors of a pope’s election and spurred brokers to use illicit means of discovering the secrets of the conclave. The papacy thus initiated a campaign against the practice during the last twenty-five years of the sixteenth century. This campaign, partially inspired by the Counter-Reformation’s impulse to reform popular mores, proved successful as wagering on papal elections disappeared after 1592.     Robert Bellarmine University of Padua.[2] 2 Career Bellarmine’s systematic study of theology began at Padua in 1567 and 1568, where his teachers were adherents of Thomism. In 1569 he was sent to finish it at the University of Leuven in Flanders. There he was ordained, and ob- tained a reputation both as a professor and a preacher. He was the first Jesuit to teach at the university, where the subject of his course was the Summa Theologica of Thomas Aquinas. His residence in Leuven lasted seven years. In poor health, in 1576 he made a journey to Italy. Here he remained, commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII to lecture on polemical theology in the new Roman Col- lege, now known as the Pontifical Gregorian University. TRIPLE LOYALTY AND DIPLOMATIC NEGOTIATIONS OF THE APOSTOLIC NUNCIO ANTONIO CAETANI AT THE COURT OF MADRID (1611-1618) by Paolo Periati (Ph.D. Università degli Studi Roma Tre) Introduction At the beginning of the Seventeenth Century, the finances of the Roman aristocratic family of the Caetanis was in troubles. The outlay was rising rapidly: firstly because of the purchase of the high office of camerlengo of the Catholic Church for the cardinal Enrico Caetani (1587),1 and then because of two extraordinary costly diplomatic missions2 to Paris (1589-1590) and Warsaw (1596-1597), where he was sent as a papal delegate. To further weigh on this financial situation, were other items of expenditure which were necessary to keep the family's aristocratic status. As a consequence, the Caetanis were forced to ask the pope the erection of a fund – called Monte Caetano3 – as well as to sell domains4 and to seek ecclesiastical benefices to contrast the indebtedness.5 As a matter of fact, according to the studies by Mario Rosa on the funding system of the Roman Curia, the drainage of the ecclesiastical benefices and pensions were the practice through which the strengthening of the social-economic status of the pastoral cadre was made possible, along with the whole multitude of ecclesiastical and secular people that gravitated around the Apostolic See.6 Furthermore, these concessions, which came from the pope’s wishes, were fundamental contributions to the building of the patron-clients 1 Camillo Manfroni, “La legazione del card. Hanawalt Advisor History Graduate Program Professor Terri Hessler ABSTRACT From the death of every pope until the election of his successor in the early modern era, the entire bureaucratic and judicial apparatus of the state in Rome and the Papal States effectively ceased to function. During this interregnum, known as the sede vacante (literally, “the vacant see”), violence and disorder dramatically increased as the papal government temporarily lost its control over the populace and its monopoly of violence. The College of Cardinals and local civic governments throughout the Papal States, authorities deputized to regulate affairs during sede vacante, failed to quell the upsurge of violence that commenced immediately upon the pope’s death. Contemporary observers and modern scholars have labeled the violence of sede vacante as meaningless and irrational. I argue, rather, that this period of unrest gave Romans and subjects of the Papal States an opportunity to perform actions increasingly forbidden by the centralizing papal government—and thus ultimately to limit the power of the government and prevent the development of the papacy into an absolute monarchy. Acting as individuals or as collectivities, Romans and papal subjects sought revenge against old enemies, attacked hated outsiders, criticized papal policies, and commented on the papal election.
