At that time, my reaction was that such an undertaking would be of considerable value, but thatit would also require a substantial investment of time, personal energy and sustained commitment. Completion of the project has convinced me that both of my initial perceptions were accurate. The document that emerged represents a sig­ nificant contribution to our understanding of the origin and evolution of an academic discipline and carries the stamp of a distinguished scholar whose vision and dedication in bringing the work to fruition will enlarge the perspective of all who consult it. Upon entering the profession in 1968, I was struck by what appeared to be an identity crisis among representatives of the field--and which to some extent continues to this day. Do we have a subject matter of our own? Is orali ty the defining characteristic of the discipline? Is the study of communication most profitably viewed as an art or a science? What is the scope of subject matter appropriate to inquiry? These questions were being discussed-often quite contentiously, if not acrimoniously. Being concerned with identity is not a bad thing. More problematic in the search for identity, have been the quality of the dialogue and the manner in which it all too frequently has been conducted. What appeared to be lacking among many of the more outspoken participants in the "identity" debate at the time I entered the field was much sense of perspective. To a novitiate, a history such as the one Professor Cohen has produced, would have been most helpful. It would have perhaps been even more helpful to those involved in disputes by better informing the judgments and pronoun­ cements toward which many of them were inclined. As uninformed as some of the controversies and disputants of the late 1960s and early 1970s were, debate at least reflected an effort to explore the merits of competing positions on issues. My perception is thatin the 1990s, while some of the same kinds of issues persist, the reflective posture of those who take positions on them has eroded. I am not sure that most of the participants are even interested in debate. They are more inclined to identify withcertain schools of thoughtand proponents of them on grounds that are largely irrelevant to the merits of ideas. Excessive emphasis on the instrumen­ tal value of higher education in the last quarter of the current century has promoted a tendency to endorse or identify with those points of view that appear to have the greatest prospects for one's personal and professional gain. In light of such motives, Page viii Foreword arguments relating to what the discipline is, is becoming, and should be are not advanced, but merely echoed. Professor Cohen's excursion through the early history of the discipline and his sustained effort to call our attention to what was intellectually at stake in its emergence can do much to provide a context for renewed and more meaningful examination of matters that influence inquiry, what we teach, and how we view ourselves both now and in the future. To that end, this book is an important addition to the scholarly literature of our field. Dennis S. Gouran The Pennsylvania State University _ INTRODUCTION This book was motivated by a realization that the field that has evolved into the discipline of Speech Communication is lacking not only a formal history but any real historical sense. In contrast to almost every other academic field, we seem ignorant (sometimes blissfully) of how the discipline reached its present stage. The names of scholars and teachers who were important in the development of the discipline have been forgotten. It sometimes seems that figures in Speech Communication have a shelf life of less than a generation. The lack of historical consciousness has had serious consequences for the profession. To borrow a term from anthropology, we are a deracinated people who are unaware of our roots. Like deracinated peoples we periodically reinvent our histories, and each time they are different. Our lack of awareness of our past has allowed us to raise questions and engage in disputes which are really part of our heritage. Our ignorance has allowed us to engage in colloquies and disputes, without understanding that the same matters were the subjects of discussions years earlier. For example, with almost monotonous frequency, discussions, sometimes acrimonious, take place between so­ cial scientists and rhetoricians. Almost never do they know that there is a deep context for such discussions. They do not know that these questions were raised in the first year of the life of the speech association and that a spirited debate took place among Everett Hunt, Charles Woolbert, James Winans and others as early as 1915.

Tests have been developed to assess individual differences in speechreading skill. Many of these are tabulated below (section 3). It should be noted however that: There is no reliable scientific research data related to lipreading conversations between different talkers. There are no published studies of expert forensic lipreaders’ skills in relation to information gathering requirements (transcript preparation, accuracy and confidence).

Most studies do not, however, address the theory’s main argument that people faced with equivocal message tasks will complete those tasks faster by choosing interpersonal communication media with these features. Participants in the present study either chose or were assigned to a medium and then timed on their completion of an equivocal message task. Findings support media richness theory’s prediction; those using videoconferencing to complete the task did so in less time than those using the leaner medium of text chat. Measures of electronic propinquity, a theory proposing a sense of psychological nearness to others in a mediated communication, were also tested as a potential adjunct to media richness theory’s predictions of medium selection, with mixed results. Williams Epidemics of infectious diseases have been documented throughout history. In ancient Greece and Egypt accounts describe epidemics of smallpox, leprosy, tuberculosis, meningococcal infections, and diphtheria.1 The morbidity and mortality of infectious diseases profoundly shaped politics, commerce, and culture. In epidemics, none were spared. Smallpox likely disfigured and killed Ramses V in 1157 BCE, although his mummy has a significant head wound as well.2 At times political upheavals exasperated the spread of disease. The Spartan wars caused massive dislocation of Greeks into Athens triggering the Athens epidemic of 430–427 BCE that killed up to one half of the population of ancient Athens.3 Thucydides’ vivid descriptions of this epidemic make clear its political and cultural impact, as well as the clinical details of the epidemic.4 Several modern epidemiologists have hypothesized on the causative agent. Langmuir et al.,5 favor a combined influenza and toxin-producing staphylococcus epidemic, while Morrens and Chu suggest Rift Valley Fever.6 A third researcher, Holladay believes the agent no longer exists.7 From the earliest times, man has sought to understand the natural forces and risk factors affecting the patterns of illness and death in society. These theories have evolved as our understanding of the natural world has advanced, sometimes slowly, sometimes, when there are profound break- throughs, with incredible speed. Remarkably, advances in knowledge and changes in theory have not always proceeded in synchrony. Although wrong theories or knowledge have hindered advances in understanding, there are also examples of great creativity when scientists have successfully pursued their theories beyond the knowledge of the time.

    UNITED NATIONS STRATEGY AND PLAN OF ACTION ON HATE SPEECH Foreword Around the world, we are seeing a disturbing groundswell of xenophobia, racism and intolerance – including rising anti-Semitism, anti-Muslim hatred and persecution of Christians. Social media and other forms of communication are being exploited as platforms for bigotry. Neo-Nazi and white supremacy movements are on the march. Public discourse is being weaponized for political gain with incendiary rhetoric that stigmatizes and dehumanizes minorities, migrants, refugees, women and any so-called “other”. This is not an isolated phenomenon or the loud voices of a few people on the fringe of society. Hate is moving into the mainstream – in liberal democracies and authoritarian systems alike. And with each broken norm, the pillars of our common humanity are weakened. Hate speech is a menace to democratic values, social stability and peace. As a matter of principle, the United Nations must confront hate speech at every turn. Silence can signal indifference to bigotry and intolerance, even as a situation escalates and the vulnerable become victims. Tackling hate speech is also crucial to deepen progress across the United Nations agenda by helping to prevent armed conflict, atrocity crimes and terrorism, end violence against women and other serious violations of human rights, and promote peaceful, inclusive and just societies. Addressing hate speech does not mean limiting or prohibiting freedom of speech. It means keeping hate speech from escalating into something more dangerous, particularly incitement to discrimination, hostility and violence, which is prohibited under international law. The United Nations has a long history of mobilizing the world against hatred of all kinds through wide-ranging action to defend human rights and advance the rule of law.

He made careful observations of microscopic organisms, which he called animalcules (1670s). • Antoni van Leeuwenhoek described live microorganisms that he observed in teeth scrapings and rain water. • Major contributions to the development of microbiology was the invention of the microscope (50-300X magnification) by Anton von Leuwenhoek and the implementation of the scientific method.
